Trieste and its surroundings offer enrichment opportunities of particular interest from the historical, cultural
and landscape point of view. Coexistence of historic architecture and modern building, many museums and
theaters, various events and turistic tour options make Trieste an attractive destination that we invite our
guests attending AIRO 2016 to explore.

San Giusto Castle
In the prehistoric age on the hill of San Giusto there was a castelliere (fortified borough), which in the Roman age
became an important urban centre. The fortress, built by the Venetians in the Middle Ages, was pulled down in
the 14th century by will of the Patriarch of Aquileia and, in 1470 only, it was rebuilt by Friedrich II of Habsburg;
the square tower and the two-storey building, which today houses the Castle Museum, date back to this period.
The two bronze figures, “Mikeze e Jakeze”, that strike the hours along the castle walls.
The path along the castle walls provides one of the most beautiful views over the city and the gulf of
Trieste.

The Castle of Miramare
Built between 1856 and 1860 by Archduke Maximilian of Austria, later Emperor of Mexico, the building is
strongly influenced by a Romantic taste, as a revisited construction of a medieval fortress.
The Castle of Miramare stands on the tip of the promontory of Grignano. Its position overlooking the sea,
provides the possibility to enjoy a wonderful view over the Gulf of Trieste.
The Castle is surrounded by a beautiful park with valuable botanical species where one can relax.
A noble residence commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, its interiors feature
sumptuous original furniture. Characterised by the “white towers” described by Carducci, rather than a
castle it is an example of a nineteenth-century prince residence, the result of the eclectic architectural style of
that period.

The new St. Anthony the thaumaturgist church (commonly called Church of Sant’ Antonio Nuovo)
The façade of the church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, built in the mid 19th century and popularly known as
“Sant’Antonio Nuovo” stands out as if set in a natural scenery at the end of the Grand Canal, in the heart of
Borgo Teresiano. The façade’s austere and regular classical style is a clear reference to the great Greek and
Roman monuments and to the Pantheon’s façade in particular, with its six Ionic columns surmounted by a
gable that used to be reflected in the canal. The interior is extremely spacious and is adorned with frescoes by
Sebastiano Santi dated 1836 depicting the triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem.
Particular of San Giusto, 1842 by Francesco Bosa, representing the patron Saints of Triest.
The façade is characterized by six ionic columns. On the main façade, in the attic, there are six statues
sculpted by Francesco Bosa in 1842, depicting san Giusto, san Sergio, san Servolo, san Mauro, Sant ‘
Eufemia and santa Tecla.

The synagogue
Different architectural styles have successfully blended into this building, whose essence is represented by
four powerful marble pillars supporting an imposing central dome. The exterior style was said to be late
Roman of a type found in fourth-century Syria, and the architects chose it because it brought them close as
possible to ancient Jewish architecture. A synagogue in this style could suggest the wide geographic
distribution of Jews, both in the Roman Empire and in modern times. It could suggest the proximity of Jews
to others within the ancient and the modern Roman (that is, Habsburg) empires.
Erected between 1908 and 1912 by the local architects, Ruggero and Arduino Berlam. “A synagogue in this
style could suggest the wide geographic distribution of Jews, both in the Roman Empire and in modern
times. It could suggest the proximity of Jews to others within the ancient and the modern Roman (that is,
Habsburg) empires. It could suggest the Jews’ Middle Eastern origin without making them look too close to
Byzantine Christians or to Moslems.” ( Synagogues of Europe, Carole Herselle Krinsky, 1985)

S. Nicolo`Greek Orthodox Church (XVIII c.)
The Church is situated on the seafront and is consecrated to Saint Nicholas, patron of sailors,
ship-owners and all those involved in maritime trade. Following the split between Serbian
Orthodox and Greek Orthodox communities over which language to use during the service, the
Greeks purchased the building and consecrated it in 1787. Built on the seafront in the first half of the
eighteenth century, it was not by chance that the Greek Orthodox church was dedicated to Saint Nicholas,
the patron saint of sailors, ship owners and all those involved in maritime trade, and to the Holy Trinity.
The wooden iconography glistening with golden inserts and paintings on a gold background, depicting
Evangelist scenes. Two balconies overlook the nave: the lower one was once set aside for women, and the
upper one reserved for the choir.

The Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens are the property of the Municipality of Trieste and a part of the Civic Scientific
Museums. The layout of the gardens, as depicted in the map, includes various areas. Associated with the
gardens is a natural reserve comprising the Biasoletto wood and the Farneto wood (for a total of 90 ha).
The Botanical Gardens publishes the Index Seminum, where each year the species for which seeds are
offered are listed, complete with all of the collection data.
Alcea rosea, itinerary’ The Simple Garden’
In its devotion to medicinal plants, the Simple Garden observes a series of systematic criteria. The choice of
species is based on the list of plants registered by the Official Pharmacopoeia of the Italian Republic, supplemented by those cited in ethnobotanical studies of Friuli Venezia Giulia, historical lists (Marchesetti) and
research on medicinal plants carried out in the Coastal Region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Tominz).

The Revoltella Museum
The Revoltella Museum is an important modern art gallery that originated from an institution founded in 1872
by Baron Pasquale Revoltella (1795 – 1869).
Revoltella bequeathed his palace and his art collection to the city of Triest; but in addition to the building
and the objects contained within he also bestowed a conspicuous revenue to the museum. This allowed for
the continuous increase of patrimony and accumulation, in a remarkably short time, of a considerable art
collection.
Lionello Balestrieri, Beethoven, 1900, oil on canvas, 202 x 420 cm
Museo Revoltella, Permanent exposition
By the end of the 19th century the collection included a number of important Italian artists, such as Lionello
Balestri, Francesco Hayez, Domenico Morelli, Giacomo Favretto, Urbano Nono and Filippo Palizzi, as well
as a good number of foreign artists.

The Railway Museum
The Railway Museum is located on the site of the former station of the Parenzana narrow-gauge railway, on the
Campo Marzio (Field of Mars) in Trieste or the former Sant’Andrea Railway Station, which was first built in
1887 and, in the course of time, became the main railway station of the S. Sabba oil port (1889) and the
Parenzana railway (1902).
The museum was founded by a group of enthusiasts and railway workers in 1975, primarily to serve as a meeting place for railway fans.
The main goal of the founders was to establish a centre for the preservation of historical railway material at
the abandoned station building in Trieste, hoping that it would grow into a real museum dedicated to the
history of the rail traffic in Trieste and the surroundings. Their wish came true on 8 March 1985, when the
Railway Museum was inaugurated.

The Giuseppe Verdi Theatre
The Giuseppe Verdi Theatre is one of the oldest running opera houses. Formerly named “Teatro Nuovo”, it was
built by architects Gian Antonio Selva (the same of the Fenice in Venice) and Matteo Pertsch. The inauguration took place on April 21st 1801, with Ginevra di Scozia by Simone Mayr. Renovation and restoration works
were carried out several times over the years. The opera house has been the focal point of the civil and cultural
life of Trieste. It has been the symbol of the Italian cultural identity, spreading the knowledge of Italian musical
culture in neighbouring Countries and, at the same time, interpreting the city’s cosmopolitism by performing
the works of central European composers.
The activity of the Verdi Theatre offers a very wide choice throughout the year. Alongside the rich Opera and
Ballet Season, the program also includes a vast range of symphonic and chamber music concerts, as well as
many side activities (meetings, congress, workshops) both in the main Hall and in the Ridotto, a smaller Hall
inside the Theatre itself. Guided tours of the Theatre are available on selected days and times. Orchestra and
Choir of the Verdi Theatre, both permanent ensembles, have been on several tours worldwide; the next one is
scheduled in September for the opening of the new opera house in Dubai.

More than 400 trains a month link Trieste to the manufacturing and industrial areas of North-East Italy and
Central Europe, with different destinations, such as Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland and
Luxembourg, to serve a developing and highly organised economic hinterland. Deep water up to 18 metres, great
ease of access for shipping, excellent road and rail links and proximity to markets, make the Port of Trieste an efficient and competitive destination. Trieste, a natural crossroads between East and West, intends to be Europe’s
preferred point of access to the markets of the Far East.

Among italian cities, Trieste boasts the most important port for its architectural historical heritage.
Porto Vecchio is the name of the old port of Trieste. With its layout, new technologies, materials used for its
imposing warehouses and special buildings, is an extraordinary evidence of port-industrial architecture in
19th century in Europe. Until 1988 the station provided power to cranes, located outside the warehouses to lift
goods to the upper floors, and elevators, located inside different port warehouses.
