Different weights and colours of the finest quality paper have been used to dramatically
high-light and complement the 30 colour plates. Two type faces are used - one to tell
Brittain's life story and one to denote the presence of critical appraisal of his work.
In addition to the book there are 2 silkscreen renderings – “Leaving the Clothing
Depot" and "Head in the Wind" in a separate cardboard portfolio case. These
silkscreens were executed by Louis Desaulniers of Montreal whose books have become
a standard reference for the field and whose work is represented in such classics as
"Mon Oncle Antoine", "Prochain Episode", “Kamouraska", etc. Image size of each
silkscreen is 18 x22.75" and each employs between 18 & 22 colours. "Leaving the
Clothing Depot" is representative of Brittain's early social realist period while "Head
in the Wind" relates to his later, more lyrical period. The silkscreens are numbered
and bear the stamp of Louis Desaulniers, the stamp of the Miller Brittain Estate, and
the initials of Cecelia Toomik (Artistic Executor). The edition of the silkscreens and
book are limited to the 250 copies. Also included is an audio recording of Miller
Brittain's voice from the 1963 NFB film "Painting a Province". Each copy of the book is
signed by the author on the limitation page and bears the seal of the Miller Brittain estate
initialled by Cecelia Toomik.

Des Vœux was born on 22 September 1834 in Baden-Baden,
Germany. He was of French descent – his ancestor Marin de
Bacquencourt Des Vœux settled in Portarlington, Ireland, in the
early 18th century, having come from Picardy in northern France.
Des Vœux attended a public school in London before starting his
studies at Charterhouse School and Balliol College, Oxford, but
left without a degree in 1856 after his father gave him the choice
of finishing his degree and become a clergyman or seeking his
fortune in the colonies. Des Vœux then moved to Canada, where he
finished his BA at the University of Toronto and became a barrister
in Upper Canada in 1861. He was appointed Governor of
Newfoundland from 1886–1887. Based on his experience in British

Guiana where he witnessed many instances of cruel and unjust treatment of indentured servants by plantation owners and managers,
Des Vœux wrote a 10,000-word report in 1869 to Lord Granville, the Secretary of State for the Colonies in which he detailed many
abuses. When the contents of the report became to the public, there was a great outcry and a
commission of inquiry was appointed, the Commission of Inquiry into the Treatment of
Immigrants. Des Vœux gave testimony before the commission in Georgetown and its report led
to many improvements in the workers' treatment.

Maria Morris Miller, botanical artist (b at Halifax, NS, 1813; d there
1875.) She took lessons in drawing and painting from 2 instructors in Halifax,
W.H. Jones and Professor L'Estrange, then in 1830 opened a school in Halifax
"to instruct young ladies in the polite and elegant accomplishment of drawing."
Encouraged by a botanist, Titus Smith, she produced 146 paintings of
wildflowers of Nova Scotia. In 1840, six of her botanical paintings were
copublished by John Snow, London, and A.W. Mackinlay, Halifax, as a series
of hand-coloured lithographs, with habitat notes by Titus Smith. This first
publishing venture was under the patronage of Sir Colin Campbell, lieutenantgovernor of Nova Scotia. Further publications were issued in 1853 and 1866
and a more ambitious title, "Wild Flowers of British North America," was
issued in 1867, but none of these was commercially successful. A collection of
her flower paintings was shown at the Paris Exposition of 1867. Miller was the
first professional woman artist in Nova Scotia and the publication of her
