Wiltshire:
timeless wonders…
timeless pleasures…
timeless places
2015 promises to be a very special year for Wiltshire
as we celebrate 800 years since the signing of Magna
Carta. Salisbury Cathedral is home to the best
preserved original 1215 document, Trowbridge is one
of the 25 Baron Towns, and exciting events marking this
historic anniversary will take place around the county –
see visitwiltshire.co.uk/magnacarta for details.
Wiltshire is an enchanted place where you feel close to
the earth and the ever-changing big skies. Renowned for
its iconic white horses carved into the rolling chalk
downs, almost half of our breathtaking landscape falls
within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there
are numerous ways to enjoy this quintessentially English
countryside, from walking, cycling and horse-riding to
fishing, golf, canal boat trips and more.
With over 10,000 years of history Wiltshire has more
than its fair share of amazing attractions. On the ‘must
see’ list alongside the medieval city of Salisbury with its
magnificent cathedral are the Stonehenge and Avebury
World Heritage Site, Longleat Safari & Adventure Park
and the National Trust’s garden at Stourhead. Other ‘big
names’ include the stately homes and gardens at
Bowood and Wilton, and modern-day attractions such as
Castle Combe motor racing circuit, Salisbury
Racecourse and Wiltshire Music Centre.
You can explore our industrial heritage at Wadworth
Brewery, Crofton Beam Engines and Wilton Windmill,
STEAM Museum or Swindon & Cricklade Railway;
discover bison, butterflies and farmyard favourites; or
uncover Wiltshire’s unparalleled archaeology in our
fascinating museums. For in-depth knowledge you can’t
beat a tour from one of our specialist guides.
Relax with friends and family while sampling traditional
Wiltshire specialities at tea shops, pubs and restaurants
around the county. Enjoy a little retail therapy at the
designer and factory outlets in Swindon or Wilton, where
the past meets the present in their historic buildings. Or
browse the many independent retailers to be found in
our charming market towns, uncovering interesting and
individual items you won’t find on every high street.
These towns also offer a wide variety of nightlife, with
the city of Salisbury holding Purple Flag status – the
‘gold standard’ for a great night out.
Wiltshire is a beautiful and diverse county with a
thriving arts scene covering theatres, cinemas, arts
centres and more. Throughout 2015 it will also host a
huge range of exciting festivals and events, from music
and dance to comedy and crafts – see
visitwiltshire.co.uk/whats-on for further details.
Only an hour and a half, or less, from London, Wiltshire
is peaceful, relaxed and unhurried; the perfect antidote
to our overcrowded cities. Here, you can press pause
and let time stand still. So make 2015 the year you
come and see us, to write your chapter in Wiltshire’s
never ending story.

1215 – 2015
800 Years of
Magna Carta
KING JOHN SIGNING MAGNA CARTA, SALISBURY CATHEDRAL
MAGNA CARTA EXHIBITION, SALISBURY (ARTIST’S IMPRESSION)
In June 1215, at the instigation of 25 barons from across
England, Magna Carta was signed at Runnymede by King
John. Who could have imagined that eight centuries later
this ‘great charter’ would still be helping to shape the law
in countries around the world.
Step inside the Chapter House at Salisbury’s magnificent
Gothic cathedral and you can see for yourself the best
preserved of only four remaining original 1215 Magna Carta
manuscripts, displayed in a spectacular medieval setting.
A major exhibition opening in March 2015 will explain the
historic context behind Magna Carta and show how it
remains as relevant as ever today.
Trowbridge, Wiltshire’s county town, is also linked to Magna
Carta as it was the headquarters of Henry de Bohun, one of
only two barons from the West Country. He is pictured in a
stained glass window at St James’ Church, holding a copy of
the Charter.
A wide range of Magna Carta themed events will take place
in Salisbury, Trowbridge and Wiltshire during the course of
2015. These include contemporary art installations,
a Barons’ Trail, musical performances, specially
commissioned theatre, family activities, a flower festival
and a medieval Charter Fayre.

ATTRACTIONS &
PLACES TO VISIT
Shrouded in mystery, steeped in legend, it’s easy to
understand why the ancient Britons believed Wiltshire
was special, and to this day the Stonehenge and Avebury
World Heritage Site remains a magnet for people from
around the world.
But history in Wiltshire is not just ancient; here you can
wander through time. The Romans, Normans and
Saxons have all left their mark and medieval Salisbury
Cathedral is home to the charter which helped shape the
law in England and beyond – Magna Carta.
Elsewhere you can visit manor houses, gardens, castles
and churches; enjoy close encounters with animals of all
shapes and sizes; take advantage of discounts at
designer and factory outlets; unearth the secrets of the
past at one of our many museums; or enjoy modern-day
attractions such as motor and horse racing.

AVEBURY
AMESBURY
Historic Amesbury - the Home of Stonehenge
Amesbury is the town where history and Stonehenge began, the oldest
continuous settlement in Britain. Start your visit with refreshments at
Solstice Park and meet the mighty Ancestor representing the earliest
settlers in Amesbury around 10,000 years ago. Not far away at Archers
Gate you can see the town’s rich heritage depicted through a community
mosaic, along with an impressive recreation of the famous Amesbury
Archer – found nearby. The town centre welcomes visitors with many
independent and unique shops, two coach friendly bays and free parking
close to the Community and Visitor Centre (open Monday-Saturday) with
information on places to visit, shop, eat, drink and stay.
Wednesday is market day. The History Centre in Church Street (opening
times vary), is where the story of Stonehenge is told and home to one of the
country’s largest collections of Mesolithic tools. The 10th century church
of St Mary and St Melor is Amesbury’s oldest building and houses a 1777
organ, 15th century clock, crusader crosses and royal floor tiles and tells
the story of Queen Eleanor of Provence, who was given a royal funeral in
Amesbury in 1291. Famous hostelries include the Antrobus Arms where
The Beatles stayed whilst filming Help on Salisbury Plain and the 13th
century George Hotel which houses Amesbury’s Aviation Heritage History
Centre.

CALNE
No visit to Wiltshire is complete without spending time in Calne. Our
friendly historic town is the place where the traditional English technique
of curing ham and bacon – the Wiltshire Cure – was invented by the Harris
family. The factory is no longer here, but Calne is proud of this part of
its history.
For a small town Calne packs in a lot of history, from medieval times and
the Industrial Revolution, through to the present day. It’s a story of drovers’
trails and coach roads, the rise and fall of canal and rail travel, woollen
broadcloth and meat production. Visit our heritage quarter, concentrated
around St Mary’s Church, to experience each chapter of our past.
Calne has always been a town of discovery. Joseph Priestley ‘discovered’
oxygen here whilst working at nearby Bowood House, and shortly after Jan
Ingenhousz built on the work of Priestley and ‘discovered’ photosynthesis.
Nowadays Calne is a great place from which to discover the timeless
wonders of Wiltshire. We are situated on the edge of the North Wessex
Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where you will find
Cherhill's white horse. On our doorstep is magnificent Bowood, home
to one of Capability Brown’s most splendid parks, and nearby is Avebury,
part of the same World Heritage Site as iconic Stonehenge.
THE RIVERSIDE
With independent shops and cafés, a Heritage Centre, the delightful
Castlefields Canal and River Park and Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum,
Calne is a great place to take a break and parking in the town is free.

Corsham
Set on the fringe of the Cotswold hills, between Chippenham and Bath,
is the historic market town of Corsham.
The High Street, with its Bath stone buildings (many of which are now
independent shops) is bound at one end by stately Corsham Court –
with its stunning art collection and fabulous walks through the grounds
– and, at the other, by the 400-year-old Almshouses. Both are popular
with visitors.
Another prominent cultural attraction in Corsham is The Pound Arts
Centre, a thriving venue offering a year-round programme of performances,
films and exhibitions. Add to this the Martingate Shopping Centre, the
weekly Tuesday market and a variety of events and festivals throughout the
year, and you have a town that is well worth a visit. And don’t be surprised
to come across a peacock strolling down the High Street. They are

Marlborough
Situated in the picturesque rural northeast of Wiltshire, Marlborough prides
itself on offering its visitors a unique blend of attractions and facilities.
Originating from a Saxon settlement, it grew into a handsome old staging
post and today is a stylish and cosmopolitan town with its own brand of
chic café culture.
Marlborough is famous for its charming High Street, one of the widest in
Europe, which is the site of a twice-weekly market as well as a monthly
community market selling local produce. The High Street is lined on both
sides with characterful old buildings housing an array of high quality shops
and at its top end sits the magnificent and historic Town Hall. It is also
home to The Merchant’s House, one of the finest 17th century homes open
to visitors in England.
Among Marlborough’s many claims to fame is the mysterious Merlin’s
Mount which can be found within the grounds of Marlborough College and
is the reputed burial place of the wizard Merlin. The annual International
Jazz Festival takes place over one weekend every July at venues around

Tidworth
Surrounded by beautiful countryside Tidworth is situated on the A338 close
to the Wiltshire/Hampshire border, with an excellent bus service from
Salisbury to Andover every 15 minutes.
To the north west of Tidworth you will find the Iron Age earthworks of
Sidbury Hill. Also known as Sidbury Camp, it is believed to have been the
site of a Neolithic settlement and covers an area of around 17 acres.
Within the town you can visit St Mary’s Mortuary Chapel, dating from 1870,
and the Norman Church of Holy Trinity. Although the earliest reference to
Holy Trinity is from the late 13th century, it may date back even earlier.
Rebuilt in the 15th century it contains a number of historic features,
including a 12th century font.
Tidworth is also home to thatched cottages, the Hampshire Cross and
Tedworth House (now more commonly known as the home for Help for
Heroes).
ST MARY'S MORTUARY CHAPEL
Set in the grounds of Tedworth Park, Tidworth Polo Club is one of the oldest
polo clubs in the country. Other local places of note include Tidworth
Garrison Golf Club, with its first class downland golf course, and Trinity
House which is associated with The Tidworth Drummer, a 17th century
poltergeist.
Tidworth is within easy driving distance of medieval Salisbury and historic
Marlborough, as well as attractions such as the Kennet & Avon Canal,
Avebury and Stonehenge.

Trowbridge o
Trowbridge has a rich and varied past. It was home to Henry de Bohun,
one of only 25 Magna Carta Barons who forced King John to sign the
Magna Carta in 1215. Trowbridge was a caput or the headquarters of a
Magna Carta Baron, one of only two in the whole of the West Country.
Discover our celebratory events in 2015.
Archaeological evidence indicates that Trowbridge has been a centre for
weaving for over a thousand years. High quality West of England cloth
supplied the Empress of Russia, Mary Quant and Queen Elizabeth II.
Trowbridge Museum contains a regionally significant collection relating to
West of England woollen cloth production and in addition, the industry’s
legacy, according to English Heritage is: ‘a quite exceptional chronological
range for industrial buildings in a town centre’.
Trowbridge has a vibrant arts and cultural scene and this is reflected in its
annual Arts Festival and biennial Cloth Road and West of England Festival
of Textiles. A top venue for major events is the Civic Centre which is
adjacent to the multi-screen ODEON and fine town park.

This annual festival of sacred choral music
is 60 years old in 2015. Three choirs
assembled from the great cathedrals and
colleges sing four services per day in the

plainchant, new commissions, organ
recitals, and some of the most complex
and beautiful music ever written.
One of the UK’s best renowned festivals, held in the breathtaking setting
of the White Horse Country Park, Westbury, Wiltshire. This year it is

Barbara Dickson appearing with Rab Noakes. With the very best in
international food and drink, activities and entertainment, this is a
wonderful family event with a musical soundtrack to die for. Festival patron

major festival that Show of Hands cracked. Earthy, West Country, boozy

ACTIVITIES
If you’re tired of the everyday, then it’s time for Wiltshire!
Almost half the county falls within an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty. At times gentle, at times wild, it ranges
from the untamed plateau of Salisbury Plain to peaceful
Cotswold hills, from the undulating swathe of Cranborne
Chase to the chalk uplands of the North Wessex Downs,
with acres of ancient woodland in the Savernake Forest
and on the borders of the New Forest National Park.
To make the most of Wiltshire and its breathtaking
countryside, try a day’s trout fishing, a canal boat trip or a
round of golf; a hot air balloon ride, a treasure trail or a
tandem skydive; an off road driving experience, a real-life
adventure escape game or an exciting range of cookery
courses. Enjoy stunning views of the landscape from
horseback; hire a bike and re-discover the thrill of cycling
around uncrowded country lanes; or let our walking
specialists provide you with a tailored, self-guided
itinerary.
In Wiltshire you can be as energetic (or otherwise) as you
wish!

Bill’s Salisbury is a gem of a restaurant. Formerly a pub, we transformed
the interior to give it a real Bill’s zing. Careful to retain and restore any
original features, the restaurant is a mix of low beams, salvaged pieces,

Salisbury Cathedral, it has plenty of seating inside as well as lots more
space outside across our new courtyard. There’s always a great
atmosphere and the restaurant slips seamlessly through the day, from
breakfast and lunch to afternoon tea and dinner, when we turn the
lights down low for a more mellow vibe.

Timeless
Pleasures
OLD SARUM
Easy to explore, yet off the beaten track, Wiltshire is one of Britain’s best kept secrets.
Almost half of the county’s landscape falls within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,
making it perfect for outdoor pursuits – at the last count we had over 8,200 paths for
walkers and cyclists, as well as bridleways, rivers, lakes and canals.
In Wiltshire you feel close to the land and the sky.
The countryside alters with the changing seasons,
connecting you not just to nature but to time itself.
Sit on the downs at sunrise or sunset and see how the
light changes the texture of the hills, then think of
our ancestors admiring the same spectacle down the
centuries. In Wiltshire you can truly touch the past.
Wiltshire is blessed with an outstanding array of walks
that can comfortably be accomplished within half a
day, leaving ample time for a welcome pub lunch.
You’ll also find plenty of challenging longer routes –
tackle their entire length over several days, or cherry
pick the sections that suit you best. Ramble on the
Ridgeway or rumble through our market towns… stroll
along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal…
walk in the footsteps of the ancient drovers... sturdy
shoes recommended.
KENNET & AVON CANAL

#timeforwiltshire
Whether you are a seasoned expert, an enthusiastic
amateur, or just starting out you’ll find plenty of cycle
routes to suit your level of ability. These range from
short hops to long-distance trails and include one of
several National Cycle Routes and part of the National
Byway. Whichever one you follow, you’ll find new
stories around every corner… and there’s a range of
exciting cycling events throughout the year to watch
or take part in too, such as Cycle Wiltshire in May
and the Wiltshire 100 and Big Wheel Bike Ride
in September.
Wiltshire is calming, comforting, refreshing. A
weekend here will help put back what the rest of the
week takes out. So at the end of a hectic few days,
breathe a deep sigh of relief and head on over. A wide
range of walker and cyclist-friendly accommodation
can be found in the 2015 Wiltshire Stay, Discover,
Explore guide, as well as on our website.
Details of walking and cycling routes around Wiltshire,
as well as a wide range of other outdoor activities, can
be found on visitwiltshire.co.uk/outdoor-activities and
there’s additional information on walking Wiltshire’s
white horses on whitehorsewalk.co.uk
