UPDATE: 2014 BUSINESSS TRENDS
We are now well into the 3rd
quarter of 2014. Across the
United States some of the trends
that were identified last year
remain relevant, while many
new ones have emerged, both
societal and economic. Overall,
predictions for the rest of 2014
suggest that this could be the
most rewarding year we’ve seen
in the past five. Here are some of the highlights from the business
magazine, Forbes over the past seven months:
Companies Recognizing More Cultural Diversity
Cultural changes have become critically important in companies
that once didn’t acknowledge how their cultures suffocated growth.
More companies are reaching the point where the old ways of doing
things are finally deemed major roadblocks to process improvements,
true breakthrough thinking, or recruiting efforts of more progressive
candidates. From big to small, many organizations are confronting
outdated cultures.
Rebranding is Really Ramping Up
Were you aware that around 100 healthcare systems nationally have
rebranded over the past two years? That trend is only accelerating in
2014, as these institutions try to keep current customers and appeal
to new ones. The same goes for other consumer based companies
responding to changing customer needs and wants. And while external
rebranding is a big part of the equation, internal efforts to bring the
new brand to life are equally important.
Gen X and Gen Y Continue to Mystify Baby Boomers
Cutting-edge research for the financial services industry showed that
the desires of Gen X (1965 – 1980) and Gen Y or Millennials (1981 –
1999) investors challenged Baby Boomer bankers’ assumptions. Gen
X and Gen Y didn’t only want new tech tools from the bankers they also
requested relationships with advisors they could trust before investing
their money. Meanwhile, physician practices struggle to attract and
retain Gen X and Gen Y providers, given their different work styles and
priorities.
Last Year’s Sales Surges Have Stagnated
People are buying differently – B2B and B2C buyers are utilizing the
availability of vast research and real time information via technology as
a big part of their the decision-making process. Googling content and
reviews, or asking peers for purchasing advice before interacting with a
sales force, have all become factors. This makes selling anything much
more challenging.
Companies are Hiring, but Want Hard–to–Find Talent
Even though there are more postings in 2014 than in 2013, landing
a job is just as tough for many as it was last year. That’s because
many 2014 jobs are so specialized, they require a certain type of
training that many people haven’t had yet. This applies to skilled crane
operators, trained construction workers, and even the IT industry, where
many hiring managers want “star” tech employees who also understand
healthcare. Watch for the next trend – hiring people with potential and
training them for specific jobs.
Innovation is Apparent in Name Only
Many CEOs openly promote innovation. Yet, very few really embrace it,
acting on the most relevant ideas to truly advance their organization.
Change can be difficult at best, but promising new ideas, tested in
advance, can work wonders for almost any business.
Convenience & Value Will Win in Healthcare
Amid healthcare uncertainty – adapting to reforms and slowly creating
new “best practices”, one new star has been born, the retail-based,
quick care clinic. Growing more popular weekly, theses mini-practices
offer what today’s consumer wants: evening hours, a convenient place
to cure common ailments, affordability and less hassle. Conversely
traditional practices that are only seeing patients between 9 and 5 will
continue their decline.
Are you seeing some of the same trends emerging in your business
and/or industry? Has your organization seen sales become stagnant
or slowly climbing upward? Let us know how we can help maximize
your Chamber ROI. We’ll continue to reach out to you in support of
your company’s goals and initiatives.

Planes Moving and Storage
Named as 2014 “Top Workplace
in Cincinnati”
Planes Moving and Storage was named a 2014 “Top Workplace in
Cincinnati” in the medium business category by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Planes was one of only 30 medium-size companies to receive this honor.
This is the fifth consecutive year Enquirer Media has held the Top Workplace
rankings. Using employee satisfaction surveys, the news publisher ranked
workplaces according to employee satisfaction, empowerment, benefits, and
work/life balance, among other factors.
“We’re extremely honored to receive this prestigious award,” said John
Planes, John Planes, CEO of Planes Moving and Storage. “We are keenly
aware that our company’s success is tied directly to our brilliant and
dynamic employees, and we thank them for this honor and for making
Planes a great place to work.”
The award coincides with another company milestone – the launch of a
new website for Planes Specialized Logistics, a division of Planes Moving
and Storage. The new www.planes-specializedlogistics.com introduces
the company’s rebranding efforts, including a new logo and a revitalized
approach to communicating the future of logistics.

first Butler County hospital to achieve Magnet recognition and the first adult
hospital in Cincinnati to earn the recognition in its first attempt to do so.
Pat Davis-Hagens, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Mercy Health says, “Achieving
Magnet recognition reinforces the culture of excellence that is a cornerstone of
how we serve our community.”
Magnet recognition has become the gold standard for nursing excellence.

A GREAT LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR INDEPENDENCE ELEMEMTARY SCHOOL 4th GRADERS
This year’s Independence Elementary School fourth graders learned some of their
science and social studies curriculum in a hands-on way thanks to the leadership
and vision of their teacher Ryan Corris and some representatives of the business
community. Mr. Corris had the idea to utilize the Liberty Center development as
a real-life example to help teach topics like changing ecosystems, weathering,
erosion, economics and working with timelines. A team of professionals representing
Steiner & Associates, developer of Liberty Center, and Liberty Township made
presentations to the students in their classrooms last November on these topics.
The presentations were well-received and served as a preview to their field trip and
site visit which was conducted in early May. During the field trip, the students had
the opportunity to learn more about the Liberty Center construction site and witness
first-hand some site grading work. In addition, the fourth graders traveled to Dudley
Woods Park to see some of the restoration work along Gregory Creek that was
completed recently by the Liberty Center development team. The collaboration was
rewarding for all involved, and we hope the students will remember the behind-thescenes preview they received when the project opens next fall!
TOWNSHIP LEADS REGION IN SINGLE-FAMILY PERMITS
A recent press release from the Home Builders Association of Greater Cincinnati (HBA), recognizes Liberty Township as leading the region in issuing single-family
housing permits through April 2014.
Liberty Township issued 92 permits through April. Hamilton Township in Warren County has the next highest permit number at 63. Two other Butler County townships
made the list of top 15 communities in the region with the highest number of single-family permits—Fairfield Township issued 18 permits and West Chester Township
issued 17 permits, both through April.
The HBA acknowledges Carriage Hill, site of the 2014 Homearama Show, as being one factor in the permit numbers. Liberty Township ended 2013 as the top
community for single-family housing permits so the trend is continuing.

strategy, tactics, and ideas behind the team that boasts more than 1,025
consecutive sell-out games.
So, after 15 years, what’s secret to this incredible track record?
Brad calls this “common sense marketing” which is their commitment to
challenging the way things have always been done—which is certainly not
an easy feat in baseball or professional sports for that matter.
The Dragon’s organization doesn’t buy in to the idea of, “Because that’s
the way it’s always been done”. On the contrary, they have found success by avoiding the status
quo looking at how things can be done differently.
“Back when the Dragons started in 2000”, Brad explained, “other teams had more than 100
years of minor league experience behind them, and had traditional ways of doing things”.
Despite their knowledge of these practices, the Dayton Dragons set out to break the mold.
Showing pictures of downtown Dayton before the stadium was built, and then comparing that to
current-day photos he called “the dream”, Brad explained the Dragons realized that “even if it
ain’t broke, then break it and fix it so it gets even better.”
Brad shared several other ways the Dragons continue to put their fans first for the sake of the
overall experience. One such way is how they sell season tickets. They offer and even encourage
fans to buy smaller packages instead of overselling them. The Dragons “talking down” approach
leads fans to smaller 17 or 35 season/game packages have resulted in a 97 to 98 percent
ticket renewal rate.
The Dragons pay attention to every detail of the fan experience and gift nights are no exception.
The Dragons recognize that their season ticket holders are their best, most valuable fans. In
contrast to major league gift nights, the Dragons make sure these valuable customers are
proactively given the gifts and are not forced to show up early or stand in line with everyone
else. This all plays in to their efforts to create a fan experience and renew their best customers.
“Again, it’s common sense stuff here,” Brad said, “In the end, if the season ticket holders
can’t make it to a giveaway night, they are able to come at any time and pick up a gift that is
reserved for them. In turn, those who aren’t season ticket holders see the gifts as a compelling
reason to want to become season ticket holders”.
SPEAKER - Brad Eaton, Dayton Dragons
EMCEE - Natasha Bryant, Office Depot -Voice of
America Centre
In the end, the Dragons embrace that they are a sports entertainment franchise. And, a result,
they openly challenge the so-called traditional ways of marketing to fans. The Dragons team is a
“vastly different product,” Brad explained.
And as for those attending the luncheon? Brad suggested that we ask, “What if we did
something different for our industry?” The answer as to how we treat our customers, fans or
supporters, he suggested, just might be common sense.

SPOTLIGHT ON RiskSOURCE® Clark-Theders
Located in West Chester, Ohio, RiskSOURCE® Clark-Theders has
served our community for over 60 years. However, RiskSOURCE®
Clark-Theders is not just an insurance agency it’s a leader in creating
a risk management-focused model.
Early on, Jonathan Theders, the company’s CEO, recognized that the
company was competing in the crowded insurance category. He did
not want to compete on price or be a
commodity, so he decided to examine
what truly made—and still makes—
RiskSOURCE® Clark-Theders different. The
answer was the birth of a unique, valuedriven risk management company.
Theders’ team conducted an analysis
of the typical client, namely a CFO at a
mid-to-large-sized company. The analysis showed that CFOs spend
less than 5 percent of their time on insurance and risk management.
And of that 5 percent, the majority is spent on the annual insurance
transaction. That means they may spend less than 1 percent of their
time analyzing the risk of that organization.
This “eureka” moment led Jonathon to declare, “Clients must see us
as a risk manager first, and a provider of insurance second”.
For 75 years
we’ve enriched
the experiences
of our clients, our
professionals, and our
communities. It’s our
mission and the source
of our growth along the
I-75 corridor. Because
we are rooted in the
communities we serve,
we stay grounded as
we grow. And because
we are invested in the
clients we serve, we’re
playing a proud role in
the region’s expansion.
We believe in smart
growth and strong
roots for us, our clients,
and our communities.
Grounded
as we grow
Over time, Clark-Theders Insurance Agency evolved by offering
new products such as the RiskSOURCE® audit in 2009. This was
the genesis of the firm’s new name, RiskSOURCE® Clark-Theders.
Today, the company makes sure it answers underwriters’ questions
by investing time up-front in the assessment of the client. This
diminishes ambiguity for the underwriter so that they can assume the
appropriate amount of risk at a lower cost. The results show this is
the right approach because every
company that has undergone a
RiskSOURCE® Clark-Theders audit,
has become a client.
Whether it be organizing networks
for forward-thinking agencies or just
continuing to share insights into the
RiskSOURCE® model of what a risk
manager (or an insurance agency) should be, one thing is for sure:
RiskSOURCE® is truly unique. For more information visit our website
at: www.risksource.com.

Connecting the Dots
Mitchell Willis - Growing Grass Roots and
Connecting the Dots
For Mitchell Willis, Director of Resource Development
at the Butler County United Way, connecting the dots
means more than increasing business. It means
developing a grass roots community.
United Way has been an integral part the Butler County community for
92 years and an integral part of The West Chester Liberty Chamber
Alliance since its inception. “I think we have to be more involved with
our chambers”, Mitchell said, “it helps the United Way foster business
relationships with both small and large businesses – relationships that
are key to the United Way’s programs and success.”
•
But Mitchell wanted to take his networking to a new level. “I came here
four years ago and I didn’t know a soul”, he said, “I wanted to live in
my community, go to church in my community and develop long lasting
relationships with my colleagues. I wanted to develop a grass roots
presence. Not just for United Way but for myself.”
With less than one week in the area Mitchell rolled up his sleeves and
got to work starting Leadership 21, a program designed to improve the
quantity, quality and effectiveness of leadership along the I-75 Growth
Corridor. He became so involved in the West Chester Liberty Chamber
Alliance and the surrounding communities he was awarded the “Citizen
of the Year Award” in 2013.
•
The secret to Mitchell’s success is straightforward. “Get involved”, he
said, “Take advantage of all the free opportunities. Business after Hours,
Sixty-Second Connect, Leadership 21 these are all great opportunities
to get to know and understand what other companies do.”

Stress-test your retirement by
calculating income with and
without Social Security
Around age 50, begin to plan the best age to access
Social Security benefits. Consider taking payments early
at a reduced benefit or delay for a larger benefit. But
while spreadsheets and calculations can help project your
retirement income, how likely is it that Social Security will
pay your full benefit over the course of your retirement years?
Without changes, not very likely. Neither Medicare nor Social
Security can sustain projected long-run programs in full
under current scheduled financing, according to the agency’s
2013 annual report.
In fact, the Social Security Administration projects that in 19
years-- in 2033-- the trust fund set up to pay for shortfalls in
benefit payments will be depleted.
Without the trust fund making up the difference, income tax
revenue will only support 77 percent of scheduled benefits.
Worse yet, the 2004 Annual Report projected a depletion of
the trust fund in 2042.
Can you afford the retirement you desire without your full
benefits, if it comes to that?
Until we get guidance from Congress to fix this projected
shortfall, Kehoe Financial Advisors recommends taking a
cautious approach in assuming your benefit.
Lessen dependence on Social Security income by saving
more money with employer retirement plans or IRAs. Also,
if you have not yet retired, stress-test retirement income by
assuming a reduction of Social Security benefits.
While solutions can also include retiring later than
anticipated, cutting expenses or working part-time after
retiring, planning 15 to 20 years ahead to save and invest
can make the difference between enjoying senior years that
are golden or not so golden.
Now is the time to look for financial planning or investment
guidance so that your future is assured!

Update on Lakota Local Schools
The state of Ohio’s budget runs for two years at a time – a biennium budget.
The state also revisits the budget plan partway through that period, a process
called the mid-biennium budget review, or simply MBR. But in addition to
budget adjustments, the MBR has become a vehicle for policy changes as well.
Ohio’s Office of Budget and Management notes that, the latest MBR, which was
just completed, includes “reforms in policies affecting K-12 education, higher
education, workforce development, jobs creation, energy policy, health care and
services for the most vulnerable Ohioans.”
The changes for K-12 education are in House Bill 487. It’s
more than 100,000 words long, and has some important
changes. These are just a few of them:
For a number of years Lakota has offered high school
students a Postsecondary Enrollment Option program (PSEO), in which high
school students took college courses and received college credit. Many
students drove themselves to local college campuses to attend those classes.
That program will be replaced, beginning in the 2015-16 school year, with a
new College Credit Plus (CCP) program. Most significantly, seventh and eighth
graders will be allowed to participate. (No word on whether they’re planning to
lower the driving age to 12.) The bill also requires all public schools to offer the
program. The MBR also expands career tech education to grades 7 and 8 as
well, although it allows schools to request a waiver of that requirement.
Ohio is one of the 43 states that have adopted the Common Core standards
in math and English/Language Arts. The MBR doesn’t change that, but it
does restrict the state Board of Education from “working with a multi-state
consortium when adopting or revising the standards in social studies, American
history, American government or science.”
The MBR also requires that public school districts set up a parent advisory
committee to review the textbooks being selected for their children to use, but
also spells out that the local Board
of Education is the sole authority
in “determining and selecting
textbooks, reading lists, instructional
materials and curriculum for its
schools.”
There’s much more in the bill, and school districts around the state are going
through it and implementing the required changes.
