Excellence in the Arts
Dr. James Winn
Described by his colleagues as modest, unassuming, gracious,
and utterly reliable, Dr. James (Jim) Winn is a distinguished
educator who has truly influenced the caliber of musical talent
within the state with his high level of professionalism and
dedication to musical education. Winn earned advanced degrees
at the New England Conservatory of Music and the University
of Michigan before moving on to a distinguished career that
includes more than ten years as solo pianist for the New York
City Ballet at Lincoln Center and professional ensemble work
with the New York New Music Ensemble, Hexagon, the Chamber
Music Society of Lincoln Center, Telluride Chamber Music Festival
and the Argenta Trio, the resident chamber group at University of
Nevada, Reno.
Winn’s faculty appointments include those at the University of
Texas, the University of Michigan, the New England Conservatory
of Music, and the Aspen Music Festival. Harvard, New York
University, Yale, Peabody Conservatory, Cornell, and Universidad
Veracruzana in Mexico are among the academic institutions that
have hosted Dr. Winn’s master classses. Dr. Kenneth Osowski,
Assistant Professor of Music at York College of Pennsylvania
wrote in a nomination letter that Winn was “…easily the biggest
influence on my decision to pursue a serious career in classical
music. In his performances, I witnessed, and continue to witness,
the infinite possibilities of expression in music performed with
intelligence, passion and technical precision.”
Winn is featured as soloist, chamber musician, or composer on
more than two dozen CDs, performing with artists as violinist
Rolf Schulte and interpreting the works of contemporary
composers such as John Adams, Michael Colgrass, and Melinda
Wagner.
A recipient of the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Liberal
Arts’ prestigious Mousel/Feltner award for creative activity and
an Artist Fellowship in the Performing Arts from the Nevada Arts
Council, Dr. James Winn continually brings joy and enlightenment
to the people of our state.
Excellence in Folk and Traditional Arts
Doug Groves
When true artisanship takes the functional beyond necessity,
craft becomes art. Doug Groves’ braided rawhide horse gear
exemplifies this perfect marriage of beauty and utility. Groves
started making horse tack—riatas, quirts, reins, buttons, and
more—over thirty years ago. Once the cow boss on the TS
Ranch outside of Battle Mountain, Nevada, Groves now lives
and works in Wellington. He learned from his peers and passes
on techniques and tricks to others in the traditional manner of
cowboys.
“There’s a genealogy behind learning all this stuff. When you’re
sitting around the bunkhouse, and somebody is teaching you
how to tie a particular button or something, you’ll get to visiting
and you’ll say, ‘Well, where did you learn that?’ And they’ll say,
‘Well, Roger Fischer taught me that when we worked at the 25
together.’ You learn it from this guy, from that guy, and knowing
where it came from is like having a quilt your Grandma made, it
means something to you.”
Groves’ work is finely detailed, meticulously executed, beautiful
and functional. He carefully prepares his own rawhide and
creates each piece with incredible attention to detail, choosing
and preparing his rawhide string with care to create the tight,
straight and even braiding that characterizes his work. His pieces
are equally sought after by collectors and cowboys, a compliment
to both the artistry and functionality of his work.
Generous in sharing his expertise with others, Groves
demonstrates extraordinary commitment to preserving the
tradition of rawhide braiding. A master artist in the Nevada
Arts Council Folklife Apprenticeship program, he leads Rawhide
Braiding workshops nearly every year at the National Cowboy
Poetry Gathering.
Groves has been featured in exhibitions across the region and
in nationally distributed publications such as Trappings of the
Great Basin Buckaroo and Works and Conversation. Groves
created From Hide to Hackamore: “Rawhide Braiding Techniques
and Traditions,” an educational slide presentation describing
his traditional work, which he has presented to audiences
throughout the state. Doug Groves holds an abiding respect for
the traditional arts of the Nevada cowboy and carries on these
traditions with humor, humility, and an obvious love of his trade.
Leadership in the Arts: Education
Las Vegas Youth Orchestras
The Las Vegas Youth Orchestras, comprised of four performing
arts groups for young people, exists due to a long-time, unique
partnership among three supporting organizations: the Clark
County School District, the City of Las Vegas and the Friends of
the Las Vegas Youth Orchestras. This collaboration allows for
tuition-free program participation for any youth who qualifies
to be in the Ensemble, Sinfonia, Symphony, or Philharmonic
orchestral performing groups. Southern Nevada has benefited
greatly from this rich cultural resource, which provides a
training ground for future musicians, music-lovers and music
professionals, as well as a high-level performance repertoire for
the community.
The organization has been nationally recognized as a model
for community involvement and positive action, providing an
educational program of extra curricular musical training that is
enriching and engaging. A testament to the program’s success
is that alumni frequently pursue collegiate and graduate studies
in music or music education, and then return as contributing
citizens to the southern Nevada cultural community. Jessica
Williams, a former program participant, volunteer and Las Vegas
Youth Orchestras (LVYO) staff member, says that the program
“taught me responsibility, leadership and understanding, and
(has) given me an undying love for orchestral music.”
“All Nevadans should be proud of this outstanding group of
young musicians. Truly these youth orchestras are gems in the
cultural life of this community, providing the opportunities for
great musical achievement and enabling the youth in our schools
to become the future musicians of our state and country,”
wrote Patrick C. Clary, a founding director of the Las Vegas
Philharmonic.
Nearly 300 young people presently participate in LVYO. Their
dedication to the rigorous and challenging work that playing
music at this level entails is evidence of the program’s success.
LVYO provides an amazing opportunity for these students to
learn important life skills such as discipline and responsibility,
master challenges, manage time, and most importantly, to
express themselves creatively through the arts.
Leadership in the Arts: Individuals
Robert and Jane Fielden
The architectural and cultural landscapes of southern Nevada
have been immeasurably enriched by the talent and dedication
of Robert (Bob) and Jane Fielden. A husband and wife team who
respectively work as architect and interior designer, the Fieldens
frequently partner on projects. If you have been in a library, a
museum, or a performing arts center in southern Nevada during
the last decade, then you have likely seen the work of Jane and
Robert Fielden.
The Fieldens came to Nevada during the late 1960s to work
on a casino project and quickly immersed themselves in their
new community, going on to become leaders in shaping and
championing cultural and artistic development throughout the
state. They helped to create the “Suitcase Gallery,” a traveling
art collection that was one of the earliest visual arts education
efforts in Clark County. They have served on numerous public
committees, including the Beautification Las Vegas, Clark County
Parks and Recreation, the Allied Arts Council of Southern Nevada
and the Arts District Neighborhood Advisory Committee for the
Downtown Arts District. Bob also serves as a member of the
Board of Directors of Nevada Humanities.
In their professional work, the Fieldens have advanced the
fields of architecture and interior design throughout the state,
sharing their love of human environment with their clients and
the community. They have won numerous awards for their design
work including the Award of Merit for Design Excellence from the
Western Mountain region of the American Institute of Architects
(AIA), the Owens-Corning National Award for Energy Conservation
and the Chicago Athenaeum/American Architecture Award.
Preserving and sharing Nevada’s history and culture has
been a driving force behind some of their biggest community
development endeavors. Their projects include the Reno Sparks
Convention Center Remodel and Renovation, Summerlin Library
and Performing Arts Center, KNPR 86 Radio Station, UNLV Master
Plan and Update, Chaparral High School Theatre Addition,
Las Vegas Convention Center Master Plan and the McCarran
International Airport’s D Concourse.
Jane and Bob Fielden have dedicated their lives and their work to
supporting the arts in Nevada, promoting the preservation of the
state’s historical resources and promoting the development of
continued arts patronage among the state’s population. It would
be hard to find anyone more deserving of this award.
Leadership in the Arts: Organizations
Reno Philharmonic
photo: Jeff Ross
Since its first public performance in August of 1969 at the
Pioneer Center for the Arts, the Reno Philharmonic has
focused on audience development and artistic excellence steadily growing in both areas. Through forty years and three
conductors—Gregory Stone, Ron Daniels, and Barry Jekowsky—
the Philharmonic has worked with other arts organizations to
build a strong cultural community in Northern Nevada. Attracting
thousands of people to the area and contributing to its economic
growth and vitality, the orchestra has received many local
awards and accolades for its musical distinction, community
outreach efforts and educational initiatives.
Celebrate Strings is one such program, providing free violin
lessons to students attending Bernice Matthews Elementary
School in Reno. For many, this is the first exposure to any type
of orchestral instrument. The program strives to instill a love of
music that will inspire the students to continue musical training
and appreciation beyond the eight-week program. The lessons
provided by the Reno Philharmonic also help to improve social
relations among the participants and increase the students’
confidence and self-esteem.
In addition to the Celebrate Strings program, the Reno
Philharmonic offers a wide array of programming including the
MasterClassics Concert series, Young People’s Concerts, the
Discover Music program, two youth orchestras and Preview
from the Podium. The Philharmonic has attracted internationally
known guest artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Judy Collins, Ray
Charles and Jose Iturbi.
The board and staff of the Philharmonic provide leadership that
has contributed to its success throughout the years. As an “arts
leader in Northern Nevada,” wrote nominator Christine Fey, Arts
and Culture Manager for the City of Reno, the Reno Philharmonic
is consistently recognized as a source of pride in the community,
giving the opportunity each year for more than five hundred
performers to make music and more than fifty thousand
audience members to experience their art.”
The Governor’s Arts Awards is an appropriate recognition as the
Reno Philharmonic celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year.
Patronage in the Arts
Estipona Group
For more than 15 years, Estipona Group has provided innovative
marketing and communications solutions to clients in Reno and
throughout the region. Not only does Estipona Group stand out
in the communications field -- garnering accolades and awards
for their creative vision-- its members give generously of their
time and talents to the community and to the arts sector in
particular.
Joe Crowley, former President of the University of Nevada,
Reno, writes that, “…this company’s wide-reaching, continuing
and consistently sterling performance in serving the arts in
Nevada is a reflection of the vision and passion of its founder.
Edward Estipona is a person of great energy, creativity,
and commitment.” Indeed, Edward Estipona’s philosophy of
“passionate giving” is shared by his colleagues and employees,
who also serve as members and trustees for local arts and
community based organizations. This civic engagement ensures
that Estipona Group stays abreast of community activities and
developments and can provide timely and creative approaches to
problem solving.
Programs and campaigns that will be familiar to those who
live in the Reno area such as “Rhythm and Rawhide,” “Food
For Thought,” “America’s Adventure Place,” and their awardwinning “Greatest Hits” campaign for the Reno Philharmonic,
reflect the creative work and passion of the Estipona Group.
They have contributed tremendously to enriching the arts in the
state of Nevada, bolstering audience participation, increasing
membership subscriptions, and yielding higher fund-raising
results.
The group successfully designed and collaborated on
Arts4Nevada.org, a grassroots online communications and
advocacy campaign that made it easy for citizens to directly
contact their legislators. Arts4Nevada.org encouraged an
unprecedented advocacy thrust during the 2006 legislative
session, which resulted in a $425,000 one-shot funding to the
Nevada Arts Council. This money was distributed via grants to
arts organizations throughout the state to support artists and
arts programs.
Although they are technically a “small business,” the reach of
Estipona Group is limitless. Its commitment to community - local
and statewide- as a primary client has resulted in a level of
service that has consistently and economically enriched the lives
of all Nevada citizens.
The Artists
Lynda Yuroff
Recipients of the 29th Annual Governors Arts Awards each
receive an original painting by artist Lynda Yuroff. Born
in Springfield, Illinois and graduating from Illinois State
University, Yuroff’s early art experiences were shaped by
university studio classes and visits to the Chicago Art
Institute. She supported her passion for studio art with
a series of jobs in graphic design before becoming an art
teacher. Since moving to Nevada 30 years ago, Yuroff has
taught art to children as an artist in residence with the Nevada
Arts Council, Sierra Arts and Very Special Arts Nevada, as
well as painting and drawing classes at Truckee Meadows
Community College. She is an award-winning artist with works
represented in many private collections nationally as well
as Bank of America and Nevada Museum of Art in Reno. This
is Yuroff’s second Governor’s Arts Award commission.
The Las Vegas
Youth Orchestras
Performing for the 29th Annual Governor’s Arts Awards
ceremony are Sammi Ciarlo on violin, Silverado High School;
Caitlin Stokes on violin, Nevada State High School; Sarah
Evins on viola, Las Vegas Academy; Rachael White on cello,
Las Vegas Academy; and Erin Barlow on bass, Coronado High
School. All are members of the Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic,
one of four separate ensembles of the Las Vegas Youth
Orchestras, an after-school program that presently serves
nearly 300 youth in southern Nevada. The two upper-level
groups (Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic and Las Vegas Youth
Symphony) perform symphonic repertoire as students prepare
for entry into collegiate and professional level organizations.
The Las Vegas Youth Sinfonia and the Las Vegas Youth
Ensemble provide training for younger students to develop into
effective orchestral players, emphasizing the responsibility,
commitment and teamwork necessary for successful
performances.
The Artists
Dr. James Winn
Dr. James Winn, associate professor of piano and composition
at the University of Nevada, Reno since 1997, has been
described as a musician’s musician with an international
reputation. Winn made his professional debut with the Denver
Symphony at the age of thirteen, and has been performing
widely in North America, Europe and Japan ever since. Before
relocating to Reno, Winn was solo pianist with the New York
City Ballet for thirteen years. In addition, he was a member of
the New York New Music Ensemble and a frequent guest with
the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He is currently a
member of Argenta, the University’s resident chamber group,
and tours regularly with internationally acclaimed New York
based violinist Rolf Schulte.
Gwendolyn Clancy
An independent filmmaker for 28 years, Gwendolyn Clancy
tells the stories of those who live and work in the Great Basin
through her videos and films, including “The Man they Call
Will James,” narrated by actor Richard Farnsworth. Her talent
at tapping into peoples’ lives has resulted in grants from the
National Endowment for the Arts, Nevada Humanities and the
Gund Foundation, and numerous awards from the American
Film Festival and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, to name
a few. For the past decade, first as the public information
officer for the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs and
presently as an independent contractor, Clancy has hosted
and produced a monthly documentary series, Exploring
Nevada, which is broadcast throughout Nevada and parts of
California. Clancy has a BA in French from Wellesley College,
Massachusetts and an MA in Communications from the
University of Nevada, Reno.
The Artists
David Bugli
and Janet Snape
Janet Snape, violin, and David Bugli, keyboard, of Greenridge
Music are providing music for the 29th Governor’s Arts
Award reception. Greenridge Music offers a comprehensive,
diversified musical repertoire, from classical to jazz. Both
musicians have university degrees in music performance
and education, and have more than 30 years of professional
experience performing for celebrity shows, studio recordings,
symphony orchestras, operas, ballets, dances, weddings,
corporate functions and concerts.

The Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs, was
created as a state agency in 2007. With offices in Carson City and Las Vegas, the Arts
Council mission is “to enrich the cultural life of the state through leadership that preserves,
supports, strengthens and makes accessible excellence in the arts for all Nevadans.” Nevada
Arts Council programs serve as catalysts to stimulate artistic and cultural activity, to provide
education to both the general population and our leaders on the role of the arts in American
life and to encourage public and private support for the arts. The Nevada Arts Council is
supported by funds designated by the Nevada State Legislature, grants for the National
