Fit Testing and Disposable Respirators
If respiratory protection is required, OSHA requires a written Respiratory
Protection Program and fit testing even for employees who wear disposable
respirators (a.k.a. filtering facepieces, dust mask) [29 CFR 1910.134(c)(1)].
Respiratory protection is required when:
- An employee’s exposure to a chemical exceeds the allowable limit
- An OSHA chemical specific regulation requires respiratory protection
- The employer mandates respiratory protection
If an employee voluntarily wears a disposable respirator, fit testing is not
required. An employee can voluntarily wear a disposable respirator for comfort
or for nuisance levels of contaminants if the employer determines that such
respirator use will not in itself create a hazard [29 CFR 1910.134 (c)(2)].
