Principal’s Note: This newsletter is provided to all McCarty parents every other Tuesday throughout the school year.
Its primary purpose is to provide timely communication regarding school sports, activities, important calendar events, and
other announcements.

Attendance
Your child’s attendance is an important part of their success in school. Please make sure your child is here
everyday. If for any reason, your child will be absent from school, please call us at 503.665.0148. For more
information about the importance of good attendance, please see the attached flyer.
Winter Needs Drive
McCarty’s Leadership class is holding a winter needs drive! The drive will take place through December 18th. The
items we will be collecting are clothing, non-perishable food items, toys, and hygiene items. Students can bring
these items to school for collection, or parents can drop them off in the office.
Family Empowerment Program
Family Empowerment is a free two-hour class that can help teens and parents better understand each other. This class is offered the 2nd and 3rd Thursday of
every month at Dexter McCarty Middle School from 6:00-8:00 p.m. If you are interested in attending, pre-registration is required. Please call 503.891.9065.
Some classes are also offered in Spanish.
School Closure Notifications
Receive emergency school closure notification via email or text message. Parents and community members can sign up for notification of any emergency
school closures and district news releases by email or text message. There is no cost for this service! It does have a test function when you register to confirm
that the message will get past your computer’s spam filters. To register for this notification, log on to the following website –
http:// www.flashalert.net/regions.html.
Snow Routes for Buses
“School Closure” or “Snow Route” information will normally be available on local radio stations as early as 6:00 a.m. If weather conditions require
alternative routing you will hear that “buses will run on snow routes”. If the Gresham-Barlow School District is not mentioned, then our schools will operate
on the normal schedule. Check the McCarty website: http:// mccarty.gresham.k12.or.us/ for bus snow routes.
Immunization Update
Letters will be mailed this month to parents whose children have incomplete immunization information. Should you receive a letter, please provide the
requested information as soon as possible. The school nurse is available to address any questions that you may have or to help identify a health care provider.
Health Care for School-Aged Youth During Winter Break
The Parkrose School-Based Health Center will be open Monday, Tuesday, Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Wednesday 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. during Winter
Break. They will be closed December 25th and January 1st. For additional information, see the attached flyer.
Interested in Being an AVID Tutor?
McCarty is looking for an additional tutor for our 7th and 8th grade AVID classes. If you are interested, please contact Ms. Amy Nimz, Assistant Principal, by
phone at 503.665.0148 or via email at [email protected]. Tutors work 4 hours each week (Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:00-2:00 p.m.) facilitating
tutorial sessions with our AVID students.

The McCarty PTC meets the first Tuesday of each month in the McCarty Library. For more information regarding McCarty’s PTC, please contact PTC

First Student Transportation is Hiring
First Student is hiring part-time bus drivers. Applicants must be able to obtain a Class B License, pass a background check and physical, read and speak
English, and be at least 21 years of age with three years of driving experience and a valid license. If interested, please contact First Student at 503.665.8193.

Fortalecimiento para familias es una clase de dos horas que ayuda a los jóvenes y a los padres a
