UMass Lowell: Division I, America East in 2013-14
UMass Lowell’s athletic teams moved up to Division I and the elite America
East Conference, representatives of both announced Feb. 14, 2013 at a rally
at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.
The America East Board of Presidents unanimously approved accepting the University of Massachusetts Lowell as a member of the conference
effective July 1, 2013. The move also received the unanimous support of
UMass Lowell’s Faculty Senate Executive Committee and Student Government Association.
“UMass Lowell is an outstanding addition to our membership and an
ideal fit for America East,” Stony Brook University President and Chairman of
the America East Board of Presidents Samuel L. Stanley said. “It is a public
research university within our conference’s geographic footprint that highly
values academics while also excelling in athletics.”
“UMass Lowell is proud to have been chosen to join the America East
conference, not just on the basis of the strengths of our outstanding athletics
programs and facilities, but also because of the university’s excellence in
academics, research and vibrant campus life,” said UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan.
With the move to America East, the 16,300-student UMass Lowell
joined institutions in America East that are of similar size and are also fouryear research universities, the majority of which are public. Those include
the University of Maine, University of New Hampshire and University of Vermont, already fellow members of Division I Hockey East with UMass Lowell.
“UMass Lowell student-athletes are not only known for their performance on the field, court and ice, but also in the classroom. Our previously
only Division I sport, men’s ice hockey, has the highest average GPA of all
of our men’s teams, regularly receiving honors from their league and other
organizations,” said UMass Lowell Athletic Director Dana Skinner. “By moving all of our teams to the America East Conference, UMass Lowell will join
our peers not only in athletics but also in academics and research.”
“I am thrilled to welcome UMass Lowell as the newest member of
America East,” America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen said. “All
throughout the membership evaluation process, our conference’s leadership
has stressed the importance of finding peer institutions with similar profiles
and an infrastructure of strong academics, competitive athletics programs
and outstanding facilities. UMass Lowell has those assets and will strengthen America East in all facets.”
UMass Lowell began competing in 14 sports in the 2013-14 academic
year, but will not be eligible for postseason play while it completes the fouryear NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I. The River Hawks will
be full Division I members of America East for the 2017-18 academic year.
As a full member of America East, UMass Lowell joined the University
at Albany, Binghamton University, University of Hartford, University of Maine,
University of Maryland Baltimore County, University of New Hampshire,
Stony Brook University and University of Vermont. In addition, Fairfield
University and Providence College are associate members of America East
in field hockey and volleyball,
respectively. Boston University
departed America East for the
Patriot League following the
2012-13 academic year.
UMass Lowell, with more
than 88 degree programs in its
six colleges, is ranked as one
of the top 100 public universities in the nation and as a top
tier national university by U.S.
News & World Report. All of
UMass Lowell’s peer institutions,
based on similar academic and
research profiles, compete at
the Division I level in athletics.
Enrollment at the university has
increased 40 percent in the last
five years, while diversity and
academic credentials of students
have increased dramatically. The
university has broken records
in each of those years for the number of students receiving diplomas, and
students on athletic teams have graduated at a higher rate than those who
are not over the last 10 years. UMass Lowell –with 75,000 graduates earning
among the top mid-career and starting salaries in New England, according
to PayScale.com -- has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation and
President Obama’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for
community and campus engagement.
“This move will add value to the degrees that students receive from
UMass Lowell because being a Division I school will add to the prestige
of the institution by strengthening the reputation of the university not just
in this area but around the country,” said Student Government Association
President Brian Dano, a marketing and finance major from Merrimack, N.H.
“I hope one day to watch UMass Lowell athletics on ESPN in the not too
distant future.”
With the exception of its Division I men’s ice hockey team, UMass
Lowell had been a member of NCAA Division II since 1975 and a member of
the Northeast-10 Conference since 2000. Since 2000, the River Hawks have
made 104 NCAA post-season
appearances, won two team national championships, had two
individual national championships and a pair of national players of the year, one Olympian,
won 59 conference championships, had 214 All-Americans
and 32 Academic All-Americans.
America East was
formed as a men’s basketballonly conference in 1979 as
the ECAC North. The league became an all-sports association
as the North Atlantic Conference in 1988. The conference
changed names to America East
in 1995. The addition of UMass
Lowell is the first expansion
since 2002 when UMBC was
elected to membership effective
for the 2003-04 academic year.
Head Coach Sarah Behn
One of the most recognized
names in New England
women’s basketball, Sarah
Behn was named head coach
of the UMass Lowell women’s
basketball program on April
5, 2011 and enters her third
year at the helm of the UMass
Lowell women’s basketball
program.
In her first two seasons, Behn
led the River Hawks to an
29-25 overall record, and
24-20 Northeast-10 Conference play. Last season,
UMass Lowell finished with its best record in 10
years with an 18-9 clip, 15-7 in conference play. Its
81.5 point-per-a-game was good enough for sec-
Behn established the Sarah Behn Basketball Camp
in 1994. Over the last 17 years, her camps and
clinics have developed more than 25,000 young
women and men and have an annual enrollment of
2,200 players per year in over 25 communities in
Massachusetts.
Behn earned her first college coaching post in 1997
at Framingham State where she turned a struggling
program from a last-place team into contenders for
the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) title within a year. Also the head
coach of the women’s soccer team, Behn guided
the Rams to the 1999 MASCAC Championship and
their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. She
was named the 1999 MASCAC Women’s Soccer
Coach of the Year.
Behn was named the head coach at Franklin Pierce
in 2000 where she took the women’s basketball
program from a 14th-place finish in 2001 to a NE10 Tournament bid in 2002. She left the post after
the 2001-02 season.
Anxious to coach again while raising four children,
Behn moved on to her alma mater, Foxboro H.S.,
in 2004 where she guided the Warriors to the MIAA
Tournament in each of the last six seasons, which
included appearances in the South Sectional semifinal in 2007 and 2010. She was named The Sun
Chronicle Coach of the Year in 2010.
ond in Divsion II. Leading the charge was senior
Bianca Simmons with a nations best 28.2 PPG.
UMass Lowell returns one starter and five veterans
for the 2013-14 season.
The sixth head coach in the program’s 36-year
history, Behn enjoyed a spectacular career at
Boston College (1989-93) where she became the
only four-time Big East Conference all-star in BC
women’s basketball history and two-time Kodak AllAmerican. She remains the all-time leading scorer
in Big East regular season games with 1,546 points
(67 games). For her career, Behn compiled 2,523
points.
A four-year player at Foxboro H.S., Behn was an
All-American in both soccer and basketball. She
set the Massachusetts career scoring record as a
senior with 2,562 points and remains among the
top 10 career scorers in the State.
Behn was named the Massachusetts Gatorade
Player of the Year as a senior. Also a standout goalkeeper on the soccer team, she set a national high
school record with more than 50 shutouts.
Behn is a native of Foxboro, Mass., where she resides with her husband Tim and four children: twins
Jack and Joey (11), Teddy (8) and Gracie (4).
The Big East Conference Rookie of the Year in
1989-90, Behn was inducted into the BC Hall of
Fame in 1998. Five years later, she became the
first female student-athlete in BC history to have
her jersey (No. 33) retired and was named among
the top 10 athletes in BC history by Sports Illustrated in 2008.
She graduated in 1993 with a degree in communications. Following graduation, she played professionally for one year in Ettlebruck, Luxembourg,
and led Central Europe in scoring with 35.0 points
per game.
Sarah Behn compiled 2,523 points
at Boston College.
Assistant Coach
Ralph Tomasso
A native of West Warwick, R.I.,
Ralph Tomasso enters his second
season on the UMass Lowell women’s basketball staff and will assist in
strategy, recruiting as well as conditioning and fitness.
A retired physical and health education teacher in the West Warwick,
R.I., school district, Tomasso comes
to UMass Lowell with a wealth of
experience at the college and high
school levels. He served a five-year
stint as head coach at Bryant University (1986-91) as well as six years
as boys’ coach at his alma mater, West Warwick H.S.
(1992-98), and many years as a camp counselor/clinician
throughout Rhode Island.
During Tomasso’s tenure at Bryant University, he
guided the Bulldogs to an overall record of 80-62 and a
48-40 clip in the NE-10. He twice led Bryant to the NE-10
Tournament Championship and the NCAA Tournament
and reached the NE-10 Tournament all five years.
In 1987-88, he led the Bulldogs to a 22-9 overall
record and a 13-5 showing in the NE-10 (third place) and
peaked at the end of the season, defeating Bentley for the
NE-10 Tournament crown. Despite a first-round loss to
Delta State (Miss.), the Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA
Tournament for the second time in the program’s history.
