INFO Package - CAIS Leadership Conference 2016
Faculty Advisors
John Davidson
Alysa Calvert
Our humble leader, Mr. Davidson, is the real
reason we are all still sane. He is incredibly
organized, and has managed to keep us
calm and collected through this process.
He has been teaching for 23 years, and is
renowned in our school as one of the best,
most approachable teachers. Mr. Davidson is
known for his quit wit, and his fashion sense.
At his previous school, Bow Valley High
School, he was involved in the execution
of the Canadian Student Leadership
Conference in 2009; his expertise has been
very helpful for our conference! We couldn’t
have done this without his dedication and
help; he truly is our behind-the-scenes hero.
Mrs. Calvert is new to WIC this year and
is teaching English 8 and 9, and leads a
leadership class as well. She has been heavily
involved in our efforts to organize this
conference, as she has had past experience
with leadership activities at her old school:
Springbank Community High School.
Without the help of Mrs. Calvert, and her
calm demeanour, we would have had a real
hard time!

He graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Études
Canadiennes Histoire et Sciences Politiques in 1994. He has been
passionate about serving the public since becoming the President of
the Students’ Union at the U of A, and he later went on to study at
Oxford as a prestigious Rhodes Scholar earning an M.A. in Philosophy
Politics and Economics.
Mr. Boissonault is an avid community leader and spends a lot of time
working with non-profits and in the public sector. He co-founded
Literacy Without Borders, an NGO devoted to promoting literacy for
both children and adults throughout Canada, and abroad.

every year. He is heavily involved in the Francophone Sport Federation of Alberta and serves
on many different boards for different francophone agencies.
This past year, Mr. Boissonault ran in the federal election, winning a seat for the Liberal Party
in the riding of Edmonton Centre. He is the first openly gay MP ever elected in Alberta and
has been working very hard to help his riding and represent his province in the House of
Commons.
Catriona Le May Doan
Catriona Le May Doan was the fastest woman on ice. After carrying the
Canadian flag into the 2002 Olympic Winter Games opening ceremony
(her fourth Olympics), Catriona defended her Olympic title with a
Gold medal performance in the 500 metre event, becoming the first
Canadian individual, and the only female Canadian individual, to defend
a gold medal at any Olympic games. She held the World Record in the
500m for 10 years. During her career Catriona broke 13 World Records.
In 1998, at the Nagano Olympic Winter Games, Catriona won her first
Olympic Gold medal in the 500m in Olympic record time, then added
an Olympic Bronze Medal in the 1000m event. She finished the 1998
season first overall in the World Cup standings in both the 500m and
1000m events. In 1999 Catriona’s domination in the speed skating world
continued when she finished first overall in the World Cup standings for the 500 m event.
Catriona’s accomplishments have earned her the 2002 Lou Marsh Award as Canada’s Athlete
of the Year and she is a three-time recipient (1998, 2001, 2002) of the Bobbie Rosenfeld
Award for Canadian Female Athlete of the Year award.
Catriona has covered five Olympic Games and co-hosted the primetime show Countdown to
Beijing. She joined the CTV Olympic broadcast team for the Vancouver 2010 Games, which
earned her a Gemini for Best Sports Analyst. Catriona continued her work with CTV, as cohost of Olympic Morning for the London 2012 Games. She was one of four athletes to light
the cauldron at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony.
Catriona was given three honorary degrees, and was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of
Fame and the Canadian Olympic Committee’s Sports Hall of Fame and appointed an Officer
of the Order of Canada – one of Canada’s highest honours.
Catriona has been a board member with VANOC and Winsport, and still actively involved in
the Canada Games Council, Special Olympics Canada, Canadian Sport Institute Calgary, Red
Deer 2019, and various other charity organizations.
Catriona works part time with Sport Calgary in helping to advance amateur sport in Calgary.
Catriona lives in Calgary with her husband Bart and their two children.
Laval St. Germain
Laval St Germain exemplifies what it means to be an adventurer.
From an early age, his interest in sports, exploring, and living a healthy
lifestyle paved the way for his extraordinary life. His hard work, and
dedication helped him to master many skills, such as telemark skiing, ski
mountaineering and flying.
Laval’s interest in flight led him to pursue many occupations, such as:
float plane pilot, tree planter pilot, and skydiving pilot. With such an
extensive background, and considerable skill in flight, he was hired as
an airline pilot at only 21. The opportunities that this career afforded him
were endless.
His travels span across the globe, from the Andes to the Amazon—all
before the age of 25.
More recently, Laval began a family life, which was yet another opportunity for growth and
challenge. With his family, Laval has continued his travels all over the world. Tragically, in 2014
the St Germains lost their eldest son while canoeing the MacKenzie River. This loss has been
a motivation for Laval to live as fully as he can in whatever time he has.
Laval continues to live the life of an adventurer as he is a mountain biker, road cyclist,
mountaineer, skier, ultra marathoner, and, perhaps most notably, in 2010 he was the first
Canadian to summit Mt. Everest without oxygen. He is a man of incredible accomplishments
that can be attributed to his dedication, zest for life, and knowledge that life must be lived.
Laval St Germain has truly lived the life of an adventurer.
Rameez Virji
Rameez Virji, 23, used to attend West Island College and is currently
pursuing a degree in Science at the University of Saskatchewan. At
the age of 13 he founded Big Tree World, an award-winning software
company that “rivalled other Internet browsers”. Years later, he, as
well as his Shad Valley team, developed the first non-invasive vaccine
pill which is now still in its patent phase. In 2012, Virji was named one
of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20, which celebrates and honours young
Canadians who have demonstrated a significant level of innovation,
leadership and achievement. He is the Vice President of Science and
Technology at Medicine for a Better Tomorrow and President/CEO of
his own company Big Tree World. This year he was invited to talk to
over 16 000 youth at the WE Day Alberta campaign where he shared
his inspiring story about pursuing his dreams.
Amanda Lindhout
Amanda Lindhout is an inspiration for all of us, a true testament to the
power of the human spirit. She is a Canadian from Alberta who for 460
days was a hostage in Somalia. She was subjected to unimaginable
emotional and physical hardships.
Amanda went through a myriad of emotions during her captivity, regret,
anger, hopelessness and unimaginable pain, but she also discovered
something; As long as she retained her ability to feel compassion, her
humanity could not be taken.
Her journey didn’t end with her release and recovery. It ignited
something in her. And this may surprise you. Since 2011 Amanda has
returned to war-ravaged Somalia to help with education and economic
initiatives. She has gained international recognition for her work supporting development
and aid in Somalia. She founded The Global Enrichment Foundation which develops, funds,
and implements program in Somalia and serves as Executive Director.
She is the co-author of the international best-seller A HOUSE IN THE SKY which has been
featured in countless review publications one of the best books of 2013. The Women’s
Executive Network named Amanda one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Power Women, and Town
and Country Magazine listed her as one of the 11 philanthropists who are changing the world.
In her book and in her speeches Amanda moves beyond her captivity. She reminds us
of lessons hidden in adversity and the power of forgiveness. Amanda is an advocate for
embracing compassion. She is a portrait of the strength of the human spirit.
Workshop Leaders
Natasha Peace
With over 15 years of experience and certified by Ashtanga Yoga 200
RYT and Sattva Yoga 200 RYT, Natasha is able to teach to a variety of
levels and is said to be an expert in reading the room and grounding
people into the moment on hand.
When you practice with Natasha you will feel supported to move
through resistance in your practice with ease, love & compassion. You
will be challenged to step out of your comfort zone to see and feel
your potential. She is a hands on teacher in order to help practitioners
be safe, to help them find more balance in their body, to assist in
taking postures deeper with support and because she believes touch
is important for human beings. Her classes are balanced with physical postures to open the
body, pranayama (breath) practice to expand the energetic body and meditation (mind
practice) to settle deeper towards our truest nature. You will leave feeling balanced and
full of joy!
One World Drumming Co.
A specialty music school and store
owned by Keri Rodger and Roger
Duncan, One World Drumming Company
has been in business since 1993. A familyrun business, they encompass high
environmental standards and believe
in fair trade. Their teachings reside in
primitive instruments with an emphasis on the Djembe from West Africa. Visit their website to

Dave Conlon
After presenting leadership seminars to students, teachers and parents
in schools, leadership camps and conferences that have ranged from
Tennessee, the North West Territories, Singapore and all across Canada;
Dave finds his toughest audience still to be his four grown children and
wife at home.
He is the writer and editor of three leadership books that have become
the standard for leadership classroom curriculum and activities in
Canada. As communications director for the Canadian Student
Leadership Association, he put the first student leadership site on the
Internet, one that is still a mecca for student activities and leadership
ideas. His contributions to student leadership was recognized by his peers across Canada
honouring him with the Barry Sharpe Award for Student Leadership.
Dave writes and publishes the CSLA newsletter, Above and Beyond, which is mailed three
times a year to over 3400 schools in Canada. In his retirement, Dave enjoys playing Lego
with his grandson and standing on the sidewalk waving at the bus with his granddaughter.
He is known as the “student leadership guru” to advisors and students across Canada. His
grandkids know him as “Grampster”.
Tracey Lambie
Tracey Lambie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Counselling.
The majority of her teaching and counselling work has been in the high school setting and it
is here that she has learned it truly does take a village to raise a child.
Tracey’s passion is to empower adolescents to be the best versions of themselves. She helps
students view mistakes as opportunities for growth, works collaboratively to problem-solve
and repair, and highlights students’ strengths to enhance their resiliency skills. She feels her
most important role is to provide support when many students feel alone in their struggles.
Her most recent work has been focusing on student stress that has reached unprecedented
levels. She advocates that prevention is critical, learning different options and engaging in
healthy coping behaviors are key to avoiding toxic stress.
On a personal level, Tracey resides in Cochrane with her husband, two daughters and one
very spoiled dog.
Scott Thompson + Elisa Neven-Pugh
Scott Thompson is proudly from Saskatchewan
and has been living in Cochrane for the past 8
years and is a self professed nerd who has been
a student of leadership for the past 25 years. He
takes students on 50-60 days worth of outdoor
adventures every year and passionately believes
that everything rises and falls on leadership
Elisa Neven-Pugh
Elisa is 20 years old and has just completed her
second year at Mount Royal University where she
is working towards a degree in Sociology. Elisa was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at age one
and has been in a wheel chair her whole life. This has not limited her as official Ambassador
for Camp Easter Seals and as a community advocate for people with mobility issues. From
young mothers to the elderly, Elisa hopes that from her efforts we will all understand that we
are connected despite how mobile or immobile we are.
Dorothy Karlson
After 32 years of teaching, and making her share of mistakes, Dorothy
Karlson has finally come to better understand Student Activities. She is
currently teaching leadership at Bow Valley High School in Cochrane,
and is the co-advisor of the Rocky View Leadership Academy, only the
second one in Canada. Dorothy has hosted leadership conferences
since her 3rd year of teaching including an opportunity to co-host
the 25th Canadian Student Leadership Conference in 2009. She was
a member of the CSLA executive for 12 years, serving as Provincial
Director for both Saskatchewan and later Alberta. She has also been
recognized as a Leader of Distinction in both provinces and was
recently honored with the Barry Sharpe Award, as an outstanding
advisor in Canada.
