Twenty-seventh Sunday + Reflection
The chief priests and elders, by their own words, align themselves with tenants in the parable—these
Jewish leaders are unfaithful and ultimately they, too, kill the One God sends into the vineyard. Even
more, they seal their own death when they answer Jesus that those violent tenants will be killed. The
death of the chief priests and elders will be that the kingdom of God, the vine of life, will be taken away
from them. Those who are faithful and accept the Son, receive the Life only God’s kingdom can bring.
They receive the very life of God.

Extraordinary Synod on the Family ~ From October 5 to the 19,
our Holy Father Pope Francis will convene the Synod on the Family
at the Vatican. The Synod of Bishops, created at Vatican Council II
and meeting first in 1967, meets at fixed times to assist the pope in
his governance of the Church by addressing questions of faith,
morals and the Church’s activity in the world. The upcoming synod
is what is called “extraordinary” and will only be the third of its kind
called for by a pope. An extraordinary synod consist of a smaller
body of bishops, with others involved as well, to address a topic of
urgency. Pope Francis calls this extraordinary synod, not in
anticipation of any change in doctrine, but to address the growing
challenges facing the family in today’s world. I would encourage all
of us to remember the work of the synod in our prayers.
Prayer for the Extraordinary Synod on the Family
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendor of
true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth,
grant that our families too may be places of communion and
prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic
Churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again
experience violence, rejection, and division: may all who have
been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy
Family of Nazareth, may the approaching Synod of Bishops make
us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the
family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary, Joseph,
graciously hear our prayer. Amen
End of the Month Food Collection ~ Help assist those in need
by bringing canned goods and non– perishable items to Mass on the
last weekend of this month. Items should be placed in the Main

Steeple People ~ High School youth are encouraged to participate
in “Steeple People” on the second and fourth Sundays of the
month. The next gathering will be held on Sunday, October 12 @
6:30 PM in the Acorn Room of the Lower Level. Food and drink

MINISTRY MINUTES FROM ROBIN BLACK-RUBENSTEIN
Saturday, October 4, is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. One of my favorite books about St. Francis is Francis, The
Journey and the Dream by Murray Bodo. It is a biography that is interlaced with Franciscan spirituality and poetry. I first read
it about twenty years ago and have re-read it many times. He presents Francis’ interior life in a manner that is reflective and
moving, yet down-to-earth, with insights that speak to many situations that we often worry about today. The style of the writing
often reminds me of Psalms. Francis is known for embracing “Lady Poverty”. He aligned himself with those in need rather
than with those who had privilege. In Bodo’s biography of Francis he writes “The town of Assisi was divided into the majores
and minores, and Francis had moved from the “greater ones” to the “lesser ones” when he finally met Jesus. He called his
brotherhood the Frates Minores, the Lesser Brothers, and he wanted them always to be associated with the poor, and the lesser
people in society. This was a constant source of amazement to people. People wanted to “better” their condition and become
more wealthy. This secured their castles against the storms of circumstances and their faith in money was their foundation.
Francis and the brothers had battered against these frail foundations, and in the course of years, many in Umbria had come to
see that the brothers were right.” Francis and the brothers embraced “Lady Poverty” to be in solidarity with those in need. The
ways and the words of Jesus were the foundation and cornerstone for them.
Our Pope Francis took on the name Francis and has, in his capacity as Pope, given us examples of ways that we can live out the
essence of St. Francis’ spirituality in our world today. He has challenged us several times to consider our faith and Jesus as our
solid foundation and our cornerstone, not privileged association, power or wealth. In an address at World Youth Day in July of
2013, Pope Francis stated that, “ He (St. Francis of Assisi) understood that true joy and riches do not come from the idols of this
world—material things and the possession of them—but are to be found only in following Christ and serving others.” In the
prayer of St. Francis we pray, “Where there is sadness let me sow joy.” In serving others we can know this joy.

Children & Stewardship
Operating Income and Expenses
Every parent wants to raise children who share and give
generously. When our children someday meet God face

them the same words the master said to those who used

their talents wisely, “Well done, my good and faithful Loose

servant...Come, share your master’s joy.” (Matt 25:21)
However, raising a generous child is a challenge in a
society that constantly teaches children to want more
and more things for themselves. One of the key factors
in teaching children to be generous is to let them see
you giving. After all, children mimic what they see, not
what they hear.

Today many donations to the parish Offertory may be
made electronically, monthly, quarterly, or via mail.
Thus, children may never actually see their parents give.
Therefore, it is important that parents talk with children
about the charitable gifts the family makes. If you
would like to increase your giving, you might even ask
your kids about ways the family budget could be
adjusted so that there is more to share with God. Their
suggestions might surprise you!
Hot Lunch
Use an allowance to help teach stewardship. We all
know that money can’t buy happiness. Wealthy people
can be just as unhappy as poorer people. Rather,
happiness comes from being content with what we have
and feeling like we are making a difference in the world.
We can put our children on the path to a happy and
successful life by teaching them how to use and manage
money so that it brings them contentment, fills their
needs and allows them to help others.
