Birdcage Team Delivers
“Best-Ever” Results
On February 29, the Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) Program and Pipe Shop leadership
recognized the birdcage team for delivering a birdcage assembly with the greatest cost and schedule
performance recorded to date. The team who is responsible for building the largest pipe assembly on
a VCS submarine, commonly known as the “birdcage,” recently completed the Delaware (SSN 791)
birdcage, achieving a 62 percent cost reduction compared to the USS Mississippi (SSN 782).
“Our team is successful because we are so diverse and utilize our collective experiences and
backgrounds for beneficial gains,” said Daniel Boyer (X42).
To celebrate the team’s accomplishment, the Pipe Shop held an appreciation luncheon and VCS
Program Director Matt Needy recognized the team by giving them each a signature coin.
2016 MOE Nominees and Award Recipients Announced
Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin is pleased to announce the nominees
and recipients for the 2016 Model of Excellence (MOE) Awards. From leadership and
operational excellence to customer service and innovation, congratulations to all of the
shipbuilders being recognized this year. New for 2016, The Courage to Make a Difference
Award distinguishes teams or projects that demonstrate courage with regard to behaviors that
positively change the company culture or make a difference in the company or community.
MOE recipients will be honored in
a special awards ceremony on
Sept. 28.

This week, all employees will be meeting with
their foremen, supervisors and leaders to discuss
the importance of proper time charging and
to reinforce employee responsibilities around
Newport News Shipbuilding timekeeping
practices. The specific attention to time charging
is about making the business stronger, being
proactive, maximizing performance, and
managing current and future contracts.
In a July 14 video message to employees, NNS
President Matt Mulherin said, “Properly
charging your time is about more than just
receiving a paycheck, and this is something
every employee should understand. During the
week of July 18, I’ve asked the leadership team
to meet with employees across the shipyard as
part of a company-wide effort to discuss the
importance of our timekeeping requirements.
It’s critically important to our success, and I
appreciate your focus, attention and discussion
on this subject.”
Every NNS employee is responsible for
accurately reporting and verifying their own
time on a daily basis. Employee time charging
responsibilities are outlined in Time and
Attendance Reporting Policy NN 10-403.

Programs is
July 29. Applicants
should expect to receive a confirmation email
from Scholarship America upon successful
submission. Applications submitted after July
29 will not be considered for the 2016-2017
school year.

X31 Recognizes Veterans with a “Wall of Honor”
The Electrical Department (X31) at Newport News Shipbuilding has recently established an X31
“Wall of Honor” in an effort to show appreciation and recognition to over 200 employees in the
department that are United States veterans.
The X31 “Wall of Honor” is currently being displayed on the second floor of Building 8 and includes
photos of electrical department employees, foremen and apprentice craft instructors.
“Not only do we respect the contribution that our veterans have made in the defense of our nation’s
freedom, we also appreciate the contribution that they now make as shipbuilders,” said Electrical
Trade Director David Batdorf. “This display gives us an opportunity to recognize their contributions
every day.”
The Electrical Department Administration Office will continue to add new photographs and
nameplates to the wall as they are submitted.
The scholarship fund, administered by
Scholarship Management Services, will award
up to 100 scholarships in August to dependent
children of HII employees. Individual award
amounts will range from $1,500 per year
for selected students enrolled in a two-year
college program to $3,000 per year for selected
students enrolled in a four-year program. The
fund will also award scholarships of up to
$3,000 toward pre-school education costs.
Children of all HII employees are eligible to
apply, with the exception of children of senior
executives and those employees who have
been with the company for less than two years.
The selection process is independent of HII
and based on both scholarship and financial
need. No employee or officer of HII will play a
part in the selection process.

Early-Bird Discount Available to Employees for One City Marathon
Newport News Shipbuilding will be the presenting sponsor for the third annual One City Marathon on Sunday,
March 12, 2017. Races will start at Newport News Park and be followed by the One City, One Celebration in Victory
Landing Park.
NNS and Huntington Ingalls Industries employees are eligible for an early-bird discount now through August 15 for
all four races—Marathon, Relay, 8K and Nautical Mile. When registering at www.onecitymarathon.com, select NNS
as the employer and the discount will be automatically applied. The early-bird rates will expire on August 16, but a
discount of $5.00 will still be available. Rates are expected to increase several times before the event date.

Registration is Underway
All classes are scheduled to begin the week of
September 19 and will conclude the week of
November 19. The application deadline is

Employees should be reminded that beginning with
the Winter 2017 bulletin, a hard copy will no longer
be available and the bulletin will only be available
electronically. To accommodate employees without
computer access, fliers will be distributed at the
shipyard gates to provide registration information

NNS Sponsors 7th Annual
Freaky Kon-Tiki Raft Race
Newport News Shipbuilding will be sponsoring the
7th annual Freaky Kon-Tiki Hampton River Raft Race
Saturday, July 23.
The event will be held in downtown Hampton at Mill
Point Park and will offer participants food, beverages,
live entertainment and a children’s area. Competitions
will include raft races, corn-hole tournaments and
giant wacky volleyball. For more information, and

STRIDE ERG Hosts After-Work
Social July 26
Join the Shipbuilders Together Realizing Inclusion,
Diversity and Equality (STRIDE) employee resource
group for its first after-work-social at Bar Louie in
Peninsula Town Center on Tuesday, July 26. Enjoy
$5 hamburgers and fries, and meet fellow members
of STRIDE, which serves as a support network and
educational resource for LGBT employees, their
friends, families and colleagues.
In an effort to support the Peninsula Food Bank,
attendees are asked to bring a canned/nonperishable
food item to donate.

The Apprentice School Jaycees is hosting a
3-on-3 basketball tournament at The Old

Defense Security Service (DSS)
Rates NNS “Commendable”
The 2016 assessment was performed by
a team of industrial security specialists,
information system security professionals, and
counterintelligence special agents at Newport
News Shipbuilding the week of May 23 – 27.
The focus of the assessment was to review
the aspects of the National Industrial Security
Program (NISP) that are applicable to the NNS
Industrial Security Program and to assess the
effectiveness of the administration within the
program.
The audit included interviews with
approximately 825 employees, inspections of
general services administration (GSA) approved
containers and visits to all areas where classified
materials are stored. Additionally, 70 percent of
NNS’ accredited classified computer network
systems were reviewed and 100 individual
classified computers were inspected.
The Defense Security Service (DSS) sent a
letter to Newport News Shipbuilding President
Matt Mulherin. The letter informed Mulherin
that NNS was rated as “Commendable for the
rating period and that the security team was
very knowledgeable of the requirements, they
maintained a high level of professionalism
and they were innovative and proactive in the
implementation of the NNS Security Program.
“Earning the ‘Commendable’ rating was a team
effort, and we want to thank everyone for the
support and participation of this year’s DSS
assessment,” said Newport News Shipbuilding’s
Facility Security Officer Donald Terry.
