OFSTED inspection. Many individual members of our
community have successes to celebrate. Let us all
thank God for His blessings. Our vacation time can
also be a time to reflect on our lives, without some of
the day to day pressures. What is God calling us to be
or do? It is also a time to prepare for the future, both
short and long term.
We wish you a really blessed summer and hope you
will be completely refreshed for whatever the new
academic year brings.

Summer Holiday
The origin of the word holiday is Holy Day and stems
from the time when Feast days of the Church were
made special by not having to work. They were days
to celebrate and contemplate on the life of the
particular saint or feast. Our summer break can also
offer a time to reflect and celebrate. The school has
had a wonderful year, topped off by the recent

Exercise Books are
your revision guides
We advise all students to be
mindful of looking after old
exercise books. It is prudent to
find a place where they can be
stored safely and accessed as
required in the next academic
year. They contain important
information that will be very useful
to students for future reference
and revision.
This is especially relevant for
students in Years 10 and 11 as
the vast majority of subjects are
tested by terminal examination at
the end of year 11. Work done in
exercise books at the start of Year
10 could well come up in the exam
at the end of Year 11 so students
should treasure their books as self

OFSTED’s Verdict ….
All Hallows is OUTSTANDING!
A letter from Mrs Lutzeier….
Just over a month ago, when the
OFSTED 'phone call came, I
experienced the same emotion as
any Headteacher would in the
circumstances; blind panic.
Luckily, I soon came to my senses
and recalled how I was surrounded
by a team of amazingly dedicated
staff. They in turn reminded me of
the superb behaviour and effort
delivered by our wonderful students
every day of the year. And, in
speaking to the students just before
they went home on the eve of the
inspection, I was reminded of how
much your support and care for our
young people contributes to the
kindness, resilience and hard work
they put in. So I told the students
we had nothing to worry about. I
told them I just wanted them to
behave as wonderfully for the
inspectors as they do whenever we
have visitors. And I told them to
enjoy their lessons the next day.
We know you'll be as delighted with
the results as we are. For the
second time, our school has been
graded as Outstanding, with the
report making explicit comments on
all the things we ourselves are
proud of.
When we read, in the summary on
the front page of the report,
" Students work hard, concentrate
in
lessons
and
participate
enthusiastically in the very wide
range of after-school activities"
alongside
"The
school
fosters
very
harmonious
and
respectful
relationships between students and

between students and staff.",
several teachers commented,
"The inspectors really understood
what All Hallows' is about."
We hope that continues to be your
experience as well.
At the end of a school year it is
always sad to say goodbye to
teaching and support staff who are
leaving us.
I would like to thank
them
on behalf of the whole
community for their work which has
contributed to our Outstanding
school.
Have a wonderful, restful summer
break.
Yours sincerely,

‘A Night at the Musicals’
The first musical evening from the Natalie
Turner and Miss Clark team, has been a
resounding success. All the performers had
amazing energy and enthusiasm in their
singing and dancing in favourite numbers
such as 'Consider Yourself' from Oliver,
'Revolting Children' from Matilda and
'Matchmaker' from Fiddler on the Roof.
Every piece was a credit to the hard working
students who brought the show to life. The
continual variety was brought together by
the show’s own caretaker, Leah Campbell,
who swept us through the evening.
Highlights were many and included special
moments from the soloists, duos and
trios. To the side of the stage was the
professional sounding band starring Mr
Phillips on drums and ex-All Hallows
student and Cambridge graduate Henry
Bertram on piano. Also shown in one of the
photographs is the excellent sound and light
crew ably led by Mr Wenman.
Natalie leaves us this year and begins the
next stage of her career at PPA in Guildford.
She directed the show and led the team of
student choreographers as well as
performing her own sensitive solo from
Ghost. Thank you, Natalie, this was an
amazing achievement, and all the very best
wishes for the future!

YEAR 11 PROM 2014 - MORE PHOTOGRAPHS ON OUR WEBSITE www.allhallows.net
1. What did you do to prepare for OFSTED?
“Long term - got into good habits to make the school as good
as it could be. Short term - we created a timetable to make sure everyone
knew what to do. “
2. Were you pleased with the result?
“Delighted. I’m really happy that they noticed everything good about the
school.”
3. What inspired you to be a head teacher?
“I never thought I was going to be a head teacher. When I was a deputy at my
previous school the head was a big, tall man and I thought I had to be big and
scary like him but I just wasn’t tall enough! Then I realised there are all sorts of
different Headteachers.”
4. What does the future of All Hallows bring?
“The new Sixth Form Centre is a very big change. We've created a restaurant
there with a lovely view over the fields. Next year staff will try to help students
with ‘character development’ as well as academic subjects.”
5. Do you enjoy making changes for the school?
“Yes. We should always be looking for ways to improve. We never progress,
we never get better if we're not prepared to make changes.”
6. What does your job entail?
Interviewing and appointing teachers and other staff. Keeping everyone
working well together “like the leader of an orchestra.”
7. What is the best part of your job?
“The people I work with, from the deputy head to the cleaners and the
restaurant staff team I'd like every one of them to realise how much they
contribute to our school.”
8. What did you want to be when you were a school child?
An actress. “In a way teaching is like being an actress.”
9. Do you enjoy your job?
“Yes! Love it!”
10. Would you consider any other job?
“I already work as an LLE (Local Leader of Education)- It is a role that allows a
person to help other schools, but by working with other schools I also get good
ideas for All Hallows'.”

GCSE Textiles Project Making a Difference
Class of 2014
As part of Mrs Padrick's Year 10 Textiles class work this term, the
students have been learning about Social, Moral, Environmental
and Cultural issues related to the Textiles Industry. We have been
very lucky with a number of donations of old fabrics from parents,
staff and friends and for a mini-project the students were all asked
to bring in an old pillowcase and using a pattern and creative
embellishments make it into a dress. These dresses will be sent to
a company in North Somerset who will send them to Africa through
a charity call "Dress a girl around the world". By Mrs Padrick
The £10 Challenge
Nine groups of Year 7 students have been taking
part in the £10 challenge in the six weeks leading
up to the end of term. Teams have been given a
loan of £10 to set up and fund their business and
then have to make as much money as they can
using only that £10. There is an assortment of
products available for sale such as key rings,
bracelets, earrings, tie die, vinyl pots, a photo booth
and a football tournament. The students have been
selling their products far and wide and at enterprise
fairs on Friday lunchtimes. The enthusiasm and
competitive spirit from the Year 7 students is
infectious and all teams are making a great effort to
brand, make and sell as much as they can. Once
the loans have been paid back they will donate half
of the proceeds to charity. Keep your eye out in the
next News.com to find out the final amount raised!

Cantamus Sing at Miss
Groves’ Wedding
During half term Girls’ Choir had an
amazing opportunity to sing at Miss
Groves’ wedding. For several weeks
Girls’ Choir, Cantamus had been
practising two songs chosen by Miss
Groves, ‘To Make You Feel My Love’ and
‘Oh Happy Day’. On the day of the
wedding we had to get to the church
before anyone else arrived. However,
Miss Dent and a few others were going
round with their preparation checklists!
When we had been through the songs we
then had to practice our entrance and exit
from the front of the church three or four
times. During the service we sat at the
back but still had a good view of the well
decorated church and the ceremony, led
by Father Niven. When Miss Groves
walked down the aisle she looked
absolutely stunning and the service was
beautiful. Miss Groves’ tutor group played
music and it was fun to see lots of
teachers in their wedding outfits. I hope
Mrs Richford enjoyed Girls’ Choir
performing at her wedding; we certainly
felt honoured to be part of her special
day.

Year 9 Girls STEM Careers Event
On Monday 23 June, Year 9 girls were lucky
enough to be visited by some inspirational women
from the engineering and science industries. The
morning started with an activity focused on the
stereotyping between boys and girls through
colours, toys and games. It was interesting to find
out that a lot of people disagreed with the unfair
stereotypes about girls such as ‘girls can’t do
science’ and that ‘girls should not do physical
jobs’. Later in the morning we had the chance to
interview all 11 of the STEM ambassadors who
had visited us as they moved around all of our
groups in a ‘speed networking’ session. The
ladies told us about their jobs and backgrounds,
showed us some of the products that they
develop and answered our questions. It was very
reassuring to learn that most of the women did not have a
clear idea about their future career when they were our age,
and that if you study subjects such as maths, physics and
chemistry at A level and beyond, there are so many jobs that
you can do when you have decided what you want to do! We
got to learn about careers that we had never even heard of
Science Club Success
Our Science Club has been meeting each week to plan,
conduct and evaluate experiments in preparation for the
annual SATRO science and engineering fair. On Thursday
19th June, our group of Year 7s and 8s went to Guildford
University to present the project. We spent a long time
discussing what we were going to investigate - looking for
Our annual Induction Day took place recently and gave our future
Sixth Form College students one final chance to try new subjects
before starting them in September. It allowed students the
opportunity to talk to teachers and tutors about life at the
College as well as meeting those that they will be sharing the
common room with next year: current Year 12s, external students
and those strange students from "the other side of the year!” We
will all meet the new Italian students in September.
Everyone involved had a lovely day, with the sun shining, music
playing and plenty of food….Glorious!
The major difference this year however, was the fact that the BBQ
(expertly handled by Mr Marker) took place outside what is soon
to be known as the “Old Common Room".
We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September for
another year of hard work and much success.
Two lucky students won the opportunity to visit the new building
which can be seen in the background of the photograph behind
the current Sixth Form Common Room. The students reported
how much they were impressed by the new Sixth Form building.

something not just exciting for the judges but that we were
interested in learning more about. In the end we used our own
surveys and newspaper articles in planning to investigate the
side effects of fizzy drinks. Over the course of our meetings
we tested for aspects such as CO2, acidity, sugars (sucrose
and glucose) and protein. We tested Fanta, Sprite, Dr Pepper
and Diet Pepsi. The day wasn’t just lots of schools’ science
displays; many universities and companies that are involved in
inspiring
younger
generations
presented
interactive
experiments and demos. We spent time throwing objects such
as tennis balls and flowers into liquid nitrogen (which instantly
freezes anything!) and attempting to build spaghetti towers to
hold marshmallows. Together we presented our project to
judges, sponsors and other school children. At the end of the
day there was an award ceremony with four different awards:
two for individuals, one for a D&T group and one for ‘The
Best Future Scientists’ sponsored by CBS Butler - which
we won!
Overall we were very proud and surprised to have stood out to
the judges for our teamwork and research. We discovered
that our hard work did pay off.

The Knights of St Columba Art
Competition
All students of Year 8 and 9 of All Hallows Catholic
School coordinated by Mrs Tennant and Miss Schular
have had the brilliant opportunity to participate in the
Knights of St Columba Easter Painting Competition.
We are so pleased that our students have done so well
in the Art competition. They really enjoyed painting and
drawing scenes from the Bible starting from the Easter
Triduum, to the end of the Easter Octave. This task has
challenged their creativity, encouraged their confidence
and made them take risks, building motivation and
facilitating opportunities for choice and discovery. This
Art competition was fantastic proof of innovative
creative cross-curricular work between Art and RE.
The Art Department is very happy to announce the local
winners of this competition are: first place Caitlin VorleyLark 8H, and the runners up, Ashly Tomson 9C and
Jasmine Reed 9H.

70th Anniversary of
D-Day
When OFSTED came to All

Mrs
Jones
gave
informative and moving assemblies
through the week to remind us all
about the historical significance of
D-Day, when on 6th June 1944 the
Normandy landings initiated the
liberation of Europe.
Mrs Jones also told us about Staff
Sergeant Barkway who was
involved with this military effort all
those years ago. We know about
this brave RAF pilot because his
granddaughter is Sophia Barkway,
one of our Year 7 students. Sophia
missed the assemblies but for a
very good reason...
Sophia meets the Bri sh Prime Minister, David Cameron. Sophia reports…
My family and
I travelled to

D-Day.
DDay
is
important to
me and my

We
attended
several
formal
ceremonies to mark the D-Day
events in Normandy including
prayers and the laying of wreaths.
It is important to recognise the
anniversary of D-Day because 70
years ago many young men were
risking their lives to save others and
liberate France. These young men
would tell us that they were not
brave or courageous—but ‘just
doing their job’.

German Exchange Review
Class sizes grew on Tuesday 24th June
as
15
students
from
the
Humboldtgymnasium, Köln, joined their
Exchange Partners at All Hallows.
Despite their very late arrival in England
the previous evening, the German
students actively got involved in lessons
and gave very positive feedback about
their experience.
In particular they enjoyed the hands-on
lessons such as Food and Resistant
Materials as these subjects are not
offered at their school in Germany.
Our Welcome Afternoon Tea gave us all
the opportunity to get to know our
partner better and to share some of the
differences between our schools – most
notably that the German students do not
wear a uniform but did admit that ours
was exceptionally smart.
The programme continued for the
remainder of the week and we enjoyed
our time spent together both in host
families and as a group. We had a lovely
day out in Windsor, culminating in
Germany winning 1-0 against USA in the
World Cup tournament!
Our students showed exceptional
hosting skills throughout the week and
every one of our visitors felt very
welcome and very well-looked after. Our
flights are booked for our return visit in
October and we are looking forward to
staying with our partners, meeting their
families
and
seeing
the
Humboldtgymnasium for ourselves.
A huge thank you to all students and
staff involved for making All Hallows first
German Exchange such a great
success.
Letters are now available for the current
Year 8/9 German classes – if you are
interested in taking part next year,
please see your German teacher or Mrs
Boniface as soon as possible.

Five hours of non-stop
music!
On Saturday 21st June the Music
department held its annual five hour
Musicathon. It took place in the Sixth
Form Common Room from 4 – 9pm and
was essentially a fund raising event to
raise funds for the forthcoming
concert to Northern Italy this July. All
the bands, choirs and orchestras that
will be performing in Italy participated
along with solos, duets and other
groups. The relaxed atmosphere was
enhanced by the licenced bar and the
excellent barbeque and of course the
warm weather that coincided with it
being the longest day of the year. All
this was supplemented by a raffle and
a wide selection of homemade cakes
and a sweet stall. Music that is to be
performed in Italy was performed to
parents, grandparents and friends –
many commented how enthusiastic and
skilful the young musicians were when
they performed their selection of music.
Thank you to all those involved.
The concert tour departs on Tuesday
8th July for nine days and will give
concerts in Rovereto, Montecchio
Precalcino, Chiampo and Montecchio
Maggiore.
