The St. Albert Rotary
MUSIC FESTIVAL
Message from the Board of Directors
There is no more powerful way to
build a community than to celebrate
a love of the arts.
We welcome everyone to come to
see and hear some wonderful music
and dance performances by our youth
– some of whom will go on to
professional careers in the arts.
All performances are open to the public.
On behalf of the Rotary Club of St Albert and the
St Albert Rotary Music Festival Association, I have the
privilege of expressing our appreciation and thanks to
the musicians and dancers as well as their parents and
teachers for the dedication they have put into getting
ready to perform at this year’s Music Festival.
We take pride in putting on our Festival, which
involves nearly 2000 musicians and dancers with more
than 750 adjudicated performances. We are particularly
appreciative of the more than 200 volunteers who will
organize the performances at our venues.
Our focus on educational evaluation of each
performance will continue with adjudicators of
national level expertise.
The St. Albert Rotary Music Festival operating costs
are over $80,000, which includes $12,000 in scholarships
and awards. These costs are being met by the generosity of individual and family supporters, St. Albert and
area businesses, government and community agencies,
local churches and the members of the Rotary Club of
St. Albert.
Please take a moment to read the list of supporters of Rotary Music Festival 2016 and consider adding
your name to the community of St. Albert Rotary Music
Festival supporters.
See you at ENCORE! on April 20th – a night to
remember.

Thanks to the Volunteers
Each year, St. Albert Rotary relies on hundreds of volunteers who offer their time to
make the annual Music Festival an outstanding success. We couldn’t do it without you.
This year we have 53 sessions in the Festival, with approximately 800 entries.
Volunteers run the sessions, host the adjudicators, help at the Encore! Event and
everything in between.
On behalf of the performers, teachers, adjudicators, parents, and all of us at the
St. Albert Rotary Music Festival . . .Thank You!
For information on volunteering, phone the Festival Office
at 780-419-2658 or 780-458-8967
In its 39th season of nurturing performing artists,
the St. Albert Rotary Music Festival will have a whole new look.
We hope you are as excited about it as we are.
The new logo was designed by professional designer Carrie Mattern of St. Albert.
It speaks to the vitality of our young artists.
The three blocks of color on the left represent stylized hearts ... symbolic of the Festival’s love of music.
They create a striking image of rhythm, flow and harmony as with music itself.
The swirl on each of the hearts is like a curled arm, a show of strength; in this case, a show of talent.

DAVID MOULTON
Band
David Moulton began his musical career as a euphonium player
in the Salvation Army Brass Band
tradition, eventually becoming
a member and soloist with The
Canadian Staff Band and Intrada
Brass. By 2003, he completed
his Bachelor of Music, Bachelor
of Education, and Master’s degree in Conducting
from the University of Toronto. He was an orchestral
conducting student of Raffi Armenian and a wind
ensemble conducting student of Dr. Denise Grant. He
was a member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra,
Capital BrassWorks (National Arts Centre Orchestra
Brass), and The Band of the Ceremonial Guard, and
has performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Hannaford Street Silver Band.
David was a teacher in the Ontario and British
Columbia public school systems. His interest in the
brass medium continued as he went on to conduct
the Mississauga Temple Band. Under his direction,
the band recorded the CD Credo featuring Brett
Baker of the Black Dyke Mills Band. Shortly after
moving to Victoria, he founded and conducted the
Vancouver Island Brass Ensemble (VIBE). While living
on the west coast, he performed with the Victoria
Symphony and multiple wind ensembles.
In 2005, David joined the Canadian Armed Forces
as a full-time Regular Force musician and assumed
the post of principal trombone and euphonium soloist with The Central Band of the Canadian Forces in
Ottawa. During his time in Ottawa, he was the leader of the Spitfire Brass Quintet. Within seven years of
his enrolment in the Regular Force, he obtained his
promotion to Warrant Officer.
Warrant Officer Moulton is currently posted to the
Royal Canadian Artillery Band where he performs on
trombone and euphonium, leads the Brass Ensemble,
Drum Majors on parade, and conducts the band in
Educational Concert Series performances. He also
runs the Public Relations and Administration departments within the RCA Band. David has a passion for
connecting with students, bringing RCA Band performances to thousands of Edmonton area students
every year.

A Music Festival with a Difference!
KATIANNE BARGEN
Pianist Katianne Bargen’s dedication to her art has led to provincial
recommendations in four consecutive
years. She has received many scholarships from the St. Albert Rotary
Music Festival and other festivals for
her outstanding performances. This
is a busy season for Katianne as she
is a contender in the Canadian Music
Competition as well. The recipient
of ARMTA and APTA awards for the
highest standing in piano exams,
Katianne also takes advantage of
master classes and summer music programs. She enjoys giving concerts for her teachers and at seniors’ lodges in the Westlock and
Barrhead area. She has volunteered for Santa’s Anonymous and a
local wilderness camp.
GRACE BOKENFOHR
Grace Bokenfohr represented St.
Albert at the provincial festival last
season in both voice and musical
theatre. She placed first in musical
theatre in a vast field of talent and
second in the vocal category. Grace
has pursued both the acting and
musical programs through the Citadel
Young Company. She has performed in three Citadel Main Stage

many years in voice and musical theatre. The recipient of many awards
from Stettler, Coronation and Red
Deer festivals, Dacia has also participated in Music Camp Alberta and the
Alberta Youth Choir. In 2015 she
had the amazing opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall as part of the
American High School Honours Choir.
Seeking to move her audience with
her performances, Dacia also takes
a lot of satisfaction in encouraging others to reach their potential
as performers too. She can be found working out with the U of
A track team or volunteering with the Bear Hugs program at the
Children’s Hospital.
