2015 Catholic Charities Annual Report ()
The Catholic Charities Appeal is the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s single most important
fundraising initiative. By achieving our 2015 goal, the CCA was able to make substantial
distributions to services and charitable entities that depend on us – and on you.
Skilled Care for Retired and Sick Priests
Many elderly priests who have given their lives in service to the faithful
of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia now have health issues, physical
disabilities and are in need of care and support. In 2015, the Catholic
Charities Appeal provided $800,000 of support.
Life, Family and Laity
The Office for Life and Family offers pastoral and sacramental guidance.
Achieving our 2015 goal meant that the Catholic Charities Appeal
provided over $400,000 to support their vital work.
Cultural Ministries
Philadelphia has long been a destination for immigrants from around
the world. These are Catholics living in a new place, making Philadelphia
their home. To help make sure that these growing Catholic communities
have a home in which to worship and thrive, the 2015 Catholic Charities
Appeal made a $500,000 distribution to The Office of
Cultural Ministries.

Catholic Special Education
The Catholic Charities Appeal supports Special Education so that
families of special needs children can find a Catholic school education
they can trust. Achieving our goal enabled us to support them with
nearly $1 million. Through the Office of Catholic Education and its four
schools of special education, special needs students receive specifically
designed instruction that includes supplementary aids and services in
the least restrictive environment, as well as the full benefits of a Catholic
education. No other schools offer this.
Mission Parishes
Some parishes in under-served areas of the Archdiocese cannot provide
vital programs such as food banks, family assistance, health services
and senior services. The Church must remain in these areas where need
is often the greatest. As their main benefactor, the Catholic Charities
Appeal was able to support them in 2015 with more than $800,000.

Catholic Social Services
CSS helps meet the material and emotional needs of the poorest and
most vulnerable among us. Your support enabled us to distribute
$4 million to help provide clothing, a hot meal, a safe place to sleep
and more to those least among us. The Community Food Program of
Nutritional Development Services serves as a vehicle for parishes,
schools, businesses and other community organizations to provide food
for the hungry. Over 850,000 pounds of food was collected last year and
distributed to a network of 40 area food cupboards located in parishes
and Catholic Social Services facilities.

Foundation Activities
The Catholic Charities Appeal provided $1.4 million for Foundation
Activities. These efforts help the faithful grow in their love of the Lord,
understand their gifts and talents, and encourages them to participate
and give back to the Church.
All distributions referenced above are based on the stated fundraising goal of $10
million, and are intended for informational purposes only. Actual distribution amounts
may increase as a result of exceeding the fundraising goal.

Dear Friends in Christ,
Each year, the Catholic Charities Appeal strives to
ensure that those who are most in need emotionally,
materially, and spiritually are supported. I am
very pleased to say that the work of the Appeal,
supported by everyone receiving this report, was a
success. Once again, thanks to your kindness, we
surpassed our annual goal of $10,000,000.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
Archbishop of Philadelphia
Over the past year, the Fresh Choice Food Pantry at Visitation
B.V.M. parish has provided food for over 4,000 families in
the Kensington area. In addition to food support, the pantry
provides nutrition and health education to help keep their
community healthy and vibrant.
The Food Pantry provides much needed supplemental food
support to the struggling Kensington community. Every
Monday there are lines waiting to get into the Center. Their
Shopping Center model makes it easier for their clients to
choose the items they need the most. With their model, the
patrons receive vouchers and can shop for anything from fish
and chicken to cereal and fresh fruits.
OVER THE PAST YEAR, THE FRESH CHOICE
FOOD PANTRY AT VISITATION B.V.M. PARISH
HAS PROVIDED FOOD FOR OVER 4,000
FAMILIES IN THE KENSINGTON AREA.

GIVING HOPE 2015
For all you do to change the lives of our neighbors
and friends, take heart in the message of the Gospel,
“Amen, I say to you.” What you have done for the
“least ones,” you did for our Lord. May God continue
to bless you and those you love.

BLESS YOU
AND THOSE
YOU LOVE.
The vast majority of these gifts were modest. That
fact gives me great hope. It shows me that when
literally tens of thousands of us say “yes” to this
effort, we accomplish remarkable results. Take a
moment to reflect on these labors, your labors, and
rejoice. Reflect on the student with special needs
who has the ability to read a literary treasure. Think
about the mother who has a safe place to stay with
her children. Consider the parishioners of one of
our mission parishes who can rest easy knowing
you are out there helping them continue to worship
and strengthen their community every day. Simply
stated, you gave them hope.

“Through the generosity of the Catholic Charities Appeal, Mick
continues to thrive at Our Lady of Confidence Day School
educationally and socially. The faculty and staff focus both
on his spiritual and educational development to give him
the confidence he needs to succeed in today’s world. He has
transitioned to OLC’s Upper School this year and continues to
make steady progress in all areas of development.

Most importantly, Mick and his classmates participated in The
Walk for Project Home. Through their Catholic education, Mick
and his friends are learning to give back, as others have given for
them.

Mick enjoyed Pope Francis’ visit and attended the Papal
Mass on the Parkway.
Providing food for those in need has always been a vital part
of the Catholic Charities Appeal mission. Through a special
mailing, the CCA was able to help Nutritional Development
Services (NDS) expand its scope and quality of service. NDS
was able to serve more cupboards in some of the poorest
neighborhoods throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia
and also increase the number of deliveries and amount of
food delivered each month. The agency was able to procure
lean meats, fish and fresh produce for cupboards interested in
providing these nutritious items, as well as proper refrigeration
if necessary. NDS has also recently provided “seed” money
for two senior centers, a community-based program and a
veteran’s program to develop community gardens. These
gardens provide food as well as opportunities for people to
work together for a common goal.

SPECIAL EDUCATION
Since we last met the Quinn Family, a lot has changed! Their
foster child, Taylor, who was a tiny, six-week old preemie, is
now a thriving toddler, exploring the world and stealing her
family’s hearts. Paul and Karen never thought they would
adopt again; however; they have asked to be considered in the
adoption process of Taylor. They believe the decision is in God’s
hands for what is best for her.
