ANNUAL PURIM CARNWAL
to Benefit the Temple Youth Group
FROM THE RABBI
congregation on the foundation ofthose bonds. Next time,
I hope you'lljoin us.
Sandford R. Kopnick
Have a great month--see you at Purim and after-
A TRIP TO REMEMBER•••.
So many wonder why take a
congregational trip-when the Federation
and so many other wonderful organizations have such
expertise at arranging these excursions? For the 13 of us
who traveled to Israel together this past month, it was two
weeks of exploration, bonding, soul-searching, learning,
laughing, and sharing in a way that will benefit our
congregation for a long time to come.
Our master tour-guide, Roger Dahm succeeded
in bringing the trip alive to our mighty band of pilgrims. In
addition, people that might not have ever had occasion to
get to know one another are now life-long friends. It
certainly will warm up Friday nights and other Temple
functions.
But the moments of awe are.still reserved for the
sights and sounds ofIsrael. The first Friday in Israel, we
arrived to Jerusalem and a beautiful overlook at the Haas
Promenade. There, we took in the view and for the first
time, many of us really understood what it meant when we
say at Pesach, ''Next Year in Jerusalem."
Some of us were in awe of the end-to-end
rainbow we saw in Haifa a few days earlier. Standing at
the Bahai Gardens at the top of the mountain, we cast our
eyes down toward the port, to see the rainbow reflecting
from the Medeterranian.
We could be inspired by the beautiful service at
Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem, where 7 cantorial
students joined our own Emily Walsh (who read Torah as
an HUC education student) with her doting mother (our
own Wendy) offering the blessing.
There was the moment at Petra when I thought I
might be late to our Jordanian guide, so I hired a camel to
get me back to the group faster. Or the tremendous amount
of rain we endured (while all ofthe Israelis felt their prayers
had been answered-for rain is like liquid gold in Israel).
Our trip is filled with memories of shopping,
learning, eating, talking, laughing, and reconnecting with
our Judaism. The Federation trips are spectacular, too-but in a different way. A congregational trip gives us a
chance to connect significantly, and build our
Rabbi Sandford R. Kopnick
P.S. For all of you who helped us say thank you to
Wendy by contributing to her trip, you did a real mitzvahand I am proud that we all could say thank you in such a
profound way.
VALLEY TEMPLE PILGRIMS
RETURN FROM ISRAEL
Twelve members of the Valley Temple and Rabbi
Sandford R. Kopnick returned Sunday, February 11,2007 from a
two week trip to Israel. Geared for first time travelers, the trip
began in the North, continued in Jerusalem, crossed the boarder
to view Petra, and returned to Jerusalem. Rain followed the group
throughout the experience. The group arrived in Tel Aviv while
hearing of a terrorist attack in Eilat. The staged demonstration
on the Temple Mount was held hOUTS before the group attended
Kabbalat Shabbat at the Western Wall in the Old City in JerusalemonFebruary9,2007.
Wendy Walsh, the Valley Temple Administrator for
twenty five years attended the trip as a gift from the
congregation. "Mrs. Walsh has been a pillar of the Temple for all
of these years, it was a wonderful way to say thank you," said
Rabbi Kopnick.
Participating in the trip were (pictured bottom left to
right) Alan Schwartz, Rita Clark. Wendy Walsh. Jean Amber, and
John Amber. (Second Row) Phyllis Bossin, Judy Gehr, David
Feldstein, Sharon Feldstein, Rabbi Sandford Kopnick, (Back Row)
Susan HofTheimer, Jon Hoflheimer, and Peggy Barrett.

HOST AN ONEG SHABBAT
Hosting an Oneg Shabbat, which is the reception
following services to celebrate the joy of the Sabbath, is a
lovely way to honor a special occasion or honor the memory of
a loved one. Call Wendy at the Temple office to say that you
will host one. A special thanks to the following who recently
hosted Oneg Shabbats:
Wyoming Artist and Valley Temple Member
Nancy TIlman has painted a mural outside Valley Temple's
Solomon Greenberg Sanctuary. The painting depicts
Jerusalem and a large tree with holiday and life-cycle
symbols inset. The mural is surrounded by the words, "it
is a tree of life to those who hold fast to it, and all of its
supporters are happy."
Illman has been a member of Valley for a few
years now, and found the stark wall to be in need of color
and form. "Her beautiful work is a wonderful addition to
our space, and helps set the tone when entering and
leaving our sanctuary," Rabbi Sandford Kopnick said.
Nancy Illman has painted murals at Yavneh Day
School, in other public venues and in private homes. She
is the mother of three boys and is a professional artist.
Illman's mural is a part of the beautification of the Valley
Temple as it approaches its 50th anniversary in May.

WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM
Stronger Together
Dear Sisterhood,
This past month has beenjam-packed with events
- all intended to help us grow a little closer, create a deeper
sense of community, and give us memories of friendship
and laughter to sustain us during the coldest fmal hours of
winter.
One of the best moments for me this month
happened during our Sisterhood meeting, when we passed
the Tzeddakah box around the room, which really should
be called the speaking box - and I listened as one by
one, each person took the box, and spoke of what they
were grateful for. What a wonderful reminder - it's just
so easy to forget to be grateful. So easy to let minor and not so minor - annoyances blind us to all that we have
been blessed with - and blind us to those who stand right
next to us offering us comfort if we only reach out.
So in that spirit, let me please recognize all the
Hamantashen bakers, young anq old, all those who
organized, and those who allowed themselves to be
organized. A thousand thanks to our tireless cookbook
committee, who allowed us not only to mark where we
have been in the last fifty years, but also provided a guide
for where we will go. And to all, who by your presence
gave us the opportunity to gather and discuss (and
sometimes argue), mess up a kitchen like no other, share
our sorrows and our joys - Thank you.

THE BREAST CANCER
STAMP
There's a good reason why Valley Temple
Sisterhood uses the Breast Cancer Awareness
stamp for first class mailings. Since 1988, The
Women of Reform Judaism has been involved
with breast cancer education, especially among women
under 50 years of age. WRJ prints a "Shower Card" which
gives easy to follow self-examination procedures for early
breast cancer detection. (The card is also printed in Spanish
and is made available to other women's organizations in
cities with large Hispanic populations.) If you would like
to have a complimentary shower card for yourself or
someone you love, please contact Jenny Broh at
[email protected],or891-5153.
Our use of the Breast Cancer Awareness stamp
is just one more way Valley Sisterhood supports The
Women of Reform Judaism in the fight against breast
cancer. You can help as well; when you purchase this
stamp, 6 cents is donated by the USPS to support breast
cancer research. It's an easy way to make a difference.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
CORNER
When you walk into our Temple on Sunday
morning, you fmd children and adults connecting to
Judaism. Our kids walk in with smiles on their faceshappy to be coming to Temple and Sunday school. Adults
walk in smiling too-whether they're coming to teach or
sub, to attend a Family Ed session, to assist in a classroom, to take part in all-school assembly, come to a
Sisterhood or Men's Club Meeting, or to have a cup of
coffee, read a book in our library, and catch up with friends.
All of this is what goes on in a typical school morning. I
invite you to "drop-in" one Sunday-I'll fmd something
meaningful for you to do inside or outside a classroom!
It's one of the best ways I know to connect to God, to
Judaism, and to our Temple.
It's hard for me to believe that we're in the middle
of my fourth year as Director of Education. During these
years, it has been my pleasure to watch our school
"without walls" (!) embrace creative teaching that is not
bound to textbooks, and is limited only by the creativity of
the teachers, the rabbis, and me. My position here was
re-created four years ago with the assistance of a grant
from the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati's S.E.E.D.
program (Synagogue Education in Excellence Directive).
Without the funding provided by S.E.E.D., I would be far
more limited in the time and support my position could
provide our schooL It is these funds that help us to create
our dynamic religious school! I come to work every day
excited to be a part of all of this!
One of the most rewarding things I get to do is
search for teaching materials. Here are two web sites
that I enjoy:
Torah Tots" (http://www.torahtots.com) is a
brightly colored web site that will catch your child's eye
right away. Included here are links to holidays, "parasha
on parade (a unique way to learn about the weekly Torah
portion)," and coloring pages. There is a new feature
called, "This month in Jewish History." I bet you'll have
to pull your child away from the computer!
Society Today, Spirituality, Family, and Jewish Literacy.
There is even a Western Wall "cam" that al10ws you to
view the wall in real time. You and your family can
participate in the centuries-old tradition of writing a note
for the Western Wall (it will be printed in the old city of
Jerusalem, and delivered by a student of Aish Ha Torah).
If you scroll down to the bottom of the home page, you'll
fmd "family parasha." You can read the weekly portion
with your family, and then delve into the story that
accompanies it. These stories are written about modem
kids with modem-day dilemmas. It will provide the
background for thought-provoking discussions around the
dinner table!
We're doing a lot right at The Valley Temple.
Thank you S.E.E.D and The Jewish Federation of
Cincinnati for your help and partnership!
B'Shalom,

The weekend of March 2-4 will include our zany Purim schpiel and dinner on
Saturday night, and the Purim Carnival held after religious school on Sunday.
To add to the celebration we have planne'd a Valley Temple Silent Auction. It
will begin Saturday, March 3rd at the Purim schpiel and continue through
Saturday, March 10th. Bidding will be open all week. The evening of March
10th you are invited to the temple to enjoy a Havdalah service and concert led by
Jewish singer and songwriter, Dan Nichols. The silent auction winners will be
announced at the end of the evening.

Solomon T. Greenberg

Since our children will have the opportunity to enjoy Dan's music at services
Friday night and again on Sunday during religious school, Saturday night has
been set aside for adults only. We have planned a fun filled, spirit filled ,evening
of wonderful music, great desserts and auction fun.

Wendy Walsh

Admission to the Saturday night Dan Nichols concert will be free to all Valley
Temple members. But we are also opening this event to the community.
Admission for non-temple members will be $5 per person. We encourage you
to tell friends and family about this much anticipated event.
To make our auction a financial success, we are gathering gift certificates and
donations from temple members, shops and businesses. If you wish to make a
donation or know someone who can, contact Kathleen Tamarkin at
761-5993 or email [email protected]. A return envelope is also
included for your convenience. Money raised from the auction will be used to
help support The Valley Temple's many programs and services.
We hope you will join us March 10th . We look forward to seeing you there.
