HEALTH
&WELLBEING
Central Bedfordshire Council recommend that
everyone aims to be active on a daily basis, the
NHS Choices guidelines vary on age:
To maintain a basic level of health, children and young people aged 5-18
need to do:
at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day – this should range from
moderate activity, such as cycling and playground activities, to vigorous
activity, such as running and tennis
on three days a week, these activities should involve exercises for strong
muscles, such as push-ups, and exercises for strong bones, such as
jumping and running
Many vigorous activities can help build strong muscles and bones, including
anything involving running and jumping, such as gymnastics, martial arts
and football.
Benefits of Physical
Activity…
Physical Activity can
help reduce…
Help maintain a healthy weight
Type 2 diabetes by 40%
Help maintain ability to perform
everyday tasks with ease
Cardiovascular disease by 35%
Improve self-esteem
Falls, Depression and Dementia by 30%
Improve your mood
Joint and back pain by 25%
Help maintain cognitive function
Cancers (Colon & Breast) by 20%
Improves sleep
Stress Levels
Improves quality of life
Difficulty in ability to carry out daily
activities
To stay healthy, adults aged 19-64 and adults aged over 65 who are generally
fit and have no health conditions that limit their mobility, should try to be active
daily and should do:
at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or fast
walking every week, and
strength exercises on two or more days a week that work all the major
muscles (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms)
Adults aged 65 or older who are not generally fit and may have health
conditions should see their GP prior to attempting any exercise to be advised
on what level of activity they should participate in. An ideal starting point is to
gradually increase levels of walking and decrease levels of sedentary movement
for long periods of time.
Children and young adults should reduce the time they spend sitting watching
TV, playing computer games and travelling by car when they could walk or
cycle instead.

BEEZEE
BODIES
At BeeZee Bodies we have something for everyone…men, women, pregnant
women, children, toddlers, dogs (ok, maybe not dogs but we’re working on
it )…we’ve got you covered. We have a bunch of programmes designed with
real people in mind…to help you lose weight, make sustainable changes and
see real results! Maybe this is the first time you’ve decided to even think about
weight or maybe you’ve tried many times before and given every diet under the
sun a go (cabbage soup anyone?).
C
M
Y
There is a lot of confusion out there about what’s the healthiest way to eat
(e.g. carbs are evil, eat like a caveman, eat to balance your pH levels to name
a few) but we want you to know our approach to losing weight and eating
healthy is based on credible scientific research and all our programmes are run
by qualified nutritionists and dietitians. We’re not about a quick fix. What we
are about is making realistic changes and creating habits that help you become
the happiest healthiest version of yourself.

the beginner walks have been
life-changing for me.
Walking for health
It goes without saying I have met
so many new people at all these
activities and that has a hugely
beneficial effect on one’s mental
health. Many of these people
have become good friends.
I cannot stress enough how
incredibly supportive (no matter
what illness you have, physical or
mental) the leaders have been!

FAMILY ACTIVITIES
& PARKS
Xplorer is a great way to help children learn how to read maps and
can be a fun, family activity! Central Bedfordshire Council deliver Xplorer
challenges on a selection of days during most school holidays at Chambers
Way Park (Biggleswade), Ampthill Park, Rushmere Park (Leighton Buzzard)
& Grove Corner Park (Dunstable). We are looking to develop this scheme in
different areas so please keep your eye out for future locations!
Please contact the Physical Activity team for more information at
[email protected]
Leisure Services Managed Play Areas
Central Bedfordshire Council Leisure Services currently owns and maintains
the following 21 equipped children’s play areas. These are open spaces free
to use. Play areas benefit a child as it is a form of exercise that promotes
well-being and wholesome physical development. Children are naturally
drawn to active play outdoors – it allows them to explore their environment,
develop muscle strength and coordination, and gain self-confidence. Playing
actively outdoors also increases flexibility, fine and gross motor skills and is
related to the development of a wide variety of physical skills, including those
involved in sports. Other play areas not on the list are managed by town/
parish councils or housing developers.
For more information on the play areas please contact the Physical Activity
Team at [email protected]

COUNTRYSIDE
SITES
DUNSTABLE DOWNS
This well-known downland site (Bedfordshire’s highest point) is
managed in partnership with the National Trust and has everything for
everyone! Big views, high hills, gliders, tea and cake, walks and a multiuser path which is wheelchair friendly along the top of the hills. You can
play football, fly a kite, go for a run, do a Health Walk or simply enjoy a
picnic and admire the stunning views and wildlife. The Chilterns Gateway
Centre has great views, a shop and a café. The nearby Chute Wood
Playscape is a woodland natural play area for children (and adults!).
There is a charge for car parking.
We have over 1000 hectares of countryside open space for public
access and wildlife. Some of the sites are manged in partnership with
the National Trust, Greensand Trust and the Wildlife Trust; the remainder
are manged by our in-house Countryside Sites Team. Sites vary from the
large - with visitor centres and lots going on i.e.; Dunstable Downs and
Rushmere Country Park, to the small and quiet such as Maulden Church
Meadows and Baulk Wood.
More information here:

Below are three of our bigger sites that you can visit to walk your dog,
go for a walk or a run, take the family for a day out, kick a ball around or
simply get away from it all and enjoy nature.

RUSHMERE
COUNTRY
PARK
This relatively new site
is managed in partnership
with the Greensand Trust and consists
of a visitor centre and café with
stunning views over wooded valleys,
hills, a lake and, in spring and early
summer, a spectacular heronry where
you can watch the herons at their large
nests in the tree tops. There are a wide
range of trails, walks and places to run
and keep fit, some of which are suitable
for wheelchairs. There are also bicycle
trails, horse riding and natural play
areas throughout the Park. Dogs are
welcome so please come, explore and
enjoy the woodlands, newly created
heathlands and the quiet valleys
with ponds and lakes. The 40-mile
Greensand Ridge Walk runs through the
Park and past many of the beautiful
natural wood sculptures including
the popular, giant-sized, ‘Storyteller’s
Chair’. There is a charge for car parking.

HOUGHTON
HALL PARK
This urban historic parkland in
Houghton Regis is managed by
CBC’s in-house Countryside Team.
Set in an urban landscape this
park is currently being restored
thanks to a £2.2 million Heritage
Lottery Fund. The Park is being
fully restored to its former glory with
recreated formal gardens, landscaping
and new tree planting. New
wheelchair-friendly paths (for cycling,
walking and running) are being created
and there will be a new visitor centre,
café and children’s play area in the
Park. The area is already very popular
with walkers, dog walkers, runners and
people seeking a green and peaceful
space away from the urban noise
and new wildflower areas will benefit
wildlife for all to enjoy. There is no
charge for visiting this Park.

WALKING
FOOTBALL
Walking Football is a different version of the beautiful game, ideal for
over 40s! Get active, meet new people and have fun!
Getting fit and healthy is the main benefit, but the social side of the
game is what keeps people coming back time and time again. The
sessions are focused on enjoyment, with an inevitable competitive edge
to games. It may be a slightly slower version of the game to reduce the
chance of injury, but make no mistake, it is far from mundane. Give
Walking Football a chance and you’ll be hooked!
Whether you are rolling back the years, learning a new sport, trying to
keep fit or simply want to get out during the week, Walking Football is
your answer.
The Physical Activity Team (CBC) run these across Central Bedfordshire
including – Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Flitwick, Shefford and
Biggleswade. Each session costs £1-2.50.

they run and what times or for any other queries by email:

Disability Session
Who is this for? All disabilities between 10 – 17 years old
Where? Saxon Pool & Leisure Centre, Biggleswade SG18 8SU
When? Every Friday 5-7pm (only runs during school term time)
How much? £3 a session
Central Bedfordshire Council work
with teamBeds&Luton and “No
Limits Bedfordshire’s Inclusive
Sports Programme” to create more
sustainable opportunities for people
with disabilities to take part in regular
sport, physical activity & exercise
in Bedfordshire. Primarily targeting
teenagers and adults with learning
disabilities our project aims to develop
a network of multi sports clubs to
enhance individual opportunity and
improve whole family wellbeing.
All clubs are run on a ‘drop in’ basis.
The activities vary from week to week,
using different sports or just general
FUN games, for example, ‘Stuck in
the Mud’. The clubs are pan disability,
so all are welcome, and we encourage
people to come along to see if it’s for
them. We try to create a very relaxed
and fun atmosphere very much like
a ‘Youth Club’ where adults and
children can come and see / meet
their friends away from schools and
their local Day Centres.
Please see following pages to find out where these cubs run and when.

A brilliant session for my daughter to be able to access! My daughter
attends the Saxon No Limits session with enthusiasm. She looks
forward to Tuesdays so much!
As parents we look upon this session as “Therapy with the Therapist”
This session is giving her the much needed exercise, stretching of her
muscles, communication as well as social interaction with her team
mates; therefore applying physiotherapy and speech therapy
without realising.
I would like to congratulate
Central Bedfordshire Council and
No Limits Team on this club in
Houghton Regis. My daughter
has a fantastic time. It provides
her with exercise, fun and a
chance to socialise with friends.
The activities are suited to her abilities enabling her to be the
same as her peers taking part being included and looked upon as a
“normal person”
Thanks to the brilliant staff that run this session for their time,
patience and understanding of each individual participant.

Disability Session
10 – 17 year olds
My daughter, Olivia is 15 years old and
has Global Developmental Delay. Due
to her disability she is unable to do
the activities mainstream children do
without an adult with her.
Only a few reasons my daughter needs
and enjoys this club:
This club gives her opportunity to
socialise with other children who have
differing needs – with a child with
learning difficulties it is very difficult to
find social groups that they can attend
and be like any other child.
The club gives her the opportunity to
learn new skills including the sporting
activity itself as well as communicating
with others.
I believe this gives her opportunity
to mix with pupils from other schools
rather than just her school friends,
which is invaluable.
I believe it has increased her
confidence and self-belief.
The club gives her the
opportunity to learn
new skills including the
sporting activity itself as
well as communicating
with others.
