General Manager’s
Message
The Dog Days of summer are upon us,
but as always, we will strive to make
the best of it. We have had some record
setting storms and high heat, despite
which we have seen a flurry of activity which
resonates the vibrant lifestyle of our days in Heritage Hunt.
Looking back at July, we saw weddings, excursions; golf
outings and special dining events to help get us off to a good
financial start to the third quarter. One reason for optimism
has been an uptick in home sales and related assessment
resale revenues.
The last month has also brought some positive changes to
our community with our cleaning/porter age services, front
entrance gate guard service and landscape service. Take a
stroll, bike ride, dog walk or slow drive on Heritage Hunt
Drive and you will see a beautiful and lush assortment of
color and pristine grooming of our common areas. Kudos to
Heritage Landscape Services (HLS), our on site staff and the
Grounds Committee for their careful attention to keeping
Heritage Hunt looking beautiful. This portrays an extremely
positive image of our community to our guests and provides
for a pleasant way for all of us to enter out community when
we return from the hustle and bustle of the “outside.”
Speaking of guests entering our community, our “Gate
Key” system is being implemented during August and your
NHSS Front Gate guards will be checking all visitors to the
community to see if they are registered in the Gate Key
system. To allow entry for those guests or contractors not
registered, the homeowner will have to be called to confirm
the visitor access to the property. If a homeowner cannot be
reached the visitor will not be granted access. This is not a
difficult system and I encourage you to register your guests
and contractors or service providers online or by completing
the form at the Clubhouse Front Desk. This will better help
control those that gain access to the community and enhance
the sense of security for those entering our community.
Please inquire at the front desk if you have any questions or
need assistance.
And finally for this month, a special thanks to those involved
in two important community projects. First, Dick Schneider,
our former Board President, Ken Aitchison, our current
President, and others have been instrumental in keeping us
informed on the Dominion Power Line Routes and keeping
up the communications to the point where it looks like
our route will not be selected. Next, many thanks to Andy
Johnson with the Architectural Review Committee, the Board
of Directors and our CMC Asst. Mgr, Rachel Mancinelli, for
providing invaluable information on how to protect your
homes during lightning storms, and for the presentations
by contractors and electricians, the Lightning Protection
Institute and Underwriters’ Laboratories. We certainly
empathize for those that experienced a loss and it was great
to see all of the friends and neighbors who pitched in to help
in any way they could. Hopefully our increased knowledge
will help prevent future losses.
I hope the rest of your summer is filled with great times and
great memories.

The Election Timeline for 2015 has been established. Applications for candidates for Board and Committee positions will be from September 14- October 16 and there
will be a Meet the Candidates event on November 18.
Voting on Online or by Paper Proxy will be from November 23- December 7 with the annual meeting on Tuesday December 8. There are currently 25 Open positions
between the BOD and the Committees. We now have 9
Committees: Architectural Review, Budget and Finance,
Community Relations, Emergency Preparedness, Facilities, Food and Beverage, Golf, Grounds and Light, Sound/
Television. Only LSTV does not have elected members
but accepts all the volunteers they can get. To help
everyone be informed of what the Board and Committees do, each of them has prepared a short informational
summary of their responsibilities for the community in
this Horn issue. We hope that all homeowners will get
informed and more will get involved.
Also in the August Horn are several proposed polices
that are presented for community review and comment.
Among them are, a proposed revision to the Design
Guidelines on Roofs, Shingles with an added section on
attached roofs, a Visitors Access policy and revisions to
Policy Resolution # 8 on Use of Lots, Living Units and
Common Areas. All residents should review to be aware
of these proposed changes that will come to the Board
within the next two months. Please do note that the area
of the Design Guidelines that stated a Design Review Application (DRA) was required to install a lightning protection system was changed to state no DRA is required.
Further information on that 6/25/15 Board decision,
suggested by the Architectural Review Committee, is
also in this issue of the Horn.
The website navigational videos that Lifestyle Director
Mark Hillis created have proven very useful and Mark
will be adding to these based on resident requests for
instruction on how to more effectively use areas of the
website. He has also created a Community Services section on the Member page. If you go to HOA and scroll
down, you will see this entry and can click on it to get to
that site. This area has varied topics of pertinent community interest and we will keep adding to it.
We also hope that everyone is aware that Dominion
Power has informed the State Corporation Commission
that they will not pursue the Northern Route for their
proposed power line location. This is the route that
would have bisected Heritage Hunt with huge power
towers. There are 5 other alternatives that they are looking at among which are lines along Route 66. The HOA
Board will remain vigilant on this issue until a final decision is made just to make sure our interests are always
protected.

Dear Heritage Hunt Homeowners:
First, please allow me to thank you for your patience while
I conducted research on these concerns. I hope that this
communication addresses all issues raised from the multiple sources involved.
Regarding application of the VA Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC) both construction and maintenance: In
Prince William County, buildings, structures and improvements must be constructed using the adopted edition of
the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Once the
building, structure or improvement is approved for use and
a final inspection/certificate of occupancy is issued by the
Building Department, the building must be maintained as
it was approved under that adoption cycle. That means it
must comply with the edition of the VUSBC that was in effect at the time of construction or improvement. Owners of
buildings or structures are not required to ‘upgrade’ or retrofit to new standards just because the code changes – even
at the time of sale or transfer. The code changes approximately every three years in VA. Since the existing systems
are deemed compliant, homeowners are not required to
upgrade the systems to comply with today’s requirements.
Of note for structures that are not compliant with the code
under which constructed: in VA there is a statute of limitations on prosecution of any non-compliant construction
work (building code violations) and there is a two part time
threshold that has to be met.
1. The Building Official (or inspector by extension) must
discover the non-compliant work or violation of the code
within two years of the final inspection approval and/or
certificate of occupancy
2. If found within two years, the building department can
seek resolution through the responsible party (the builder/
contractor) within one year after discovery to include
prosecution. However, if not found within two years, the
building department may only issue the homeowner a
report of findings, but take no further action
Regarding the two structures that were damage by fire
(5940 Affirmed Place and 6319 Adirondack Court): there is
no evidence that these fires were caused by failure of CSST
gas piping installed in these units. There is no evidence
that these fires were caused by non-compliant construction; meaning all of the homes in Heritage Hunt that have a
valid Certificate of Occupancy were inspected and approved in accordance with the code under which they were
constructed. Lastly, the Building Department can draw no
factual conclusions that the configuration of these units or
the systems contained therein were more susceptible to
lightning strikes then others. Our opinion is that the proximity of incidents is simply coincidence.
• 5940 Affirmed Place: Building permit #BLD2004-12674
issued 4/27/2004 under the 1996 edition of the VUSBC;
Certificate of occupancy issued 11/19/2004 – statute of
limitations expired
• 6319 Adirondack Court: Building permit #BLD200405253 issued 10/20/2003 under the 1996 edition of the
VUSBC; Certificate of occupancy issued 4/1/2004 – statute
of limitations expired
The Heritage Horn • August 2015
Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club: www.heritagehunt.net
VA Building Code (contd.)
Regarding CSST piping: This piping was first used under
the 1996 CABO for One and Two Family dwellings. The
1996 CABO for One and Two Family Dwellings was adopted
under the 1996 edition of the VUSBC which was in effect
from 4/15/1997 until 10/1/2004 . The electrical requirement for bonding gas piping under this code permitted the
equipment conductor of the circuit (serving the equipment
such the furnace, water heater, etc..) likely to energize the
piping to serve as the bonding means. Since the equipment was bonded and grounded, the gas piping serving the
equipment was deemed to be bonded as well. The CSST
piping product was later identified as a concern for fires
potentially related to lightning strikes. The national and
state codes were changed to address this concern, and was
formally adopted under the 2006 edition of the VUSBC
which became effective May 1 , 2008. This now required the
CSST piping to be bonded to the electrical service grounding electrode system at the point where the gas piping entered the building. The Bonding conductor size shall not be
smaller than #6 copper. This code requirement continues
through the current edition of the VUSBC. Here are some
quick definitions to help:
• Bonding Conductor: The conductor used to permanently
join of all metal systems and parts of the electrical equipment together to assure continuity and the capacity to
safely carry any current likely to be imposed on any metallic piping , raceways, enclosures etc.
• Grounding Conductor: The conductor used to connect
equipment to the grounded bus bar and to the grounding
electrode system. This conductor provides a path for unintended current on metallic surfaces of electrical fixtures,
appliances, etc. to trip the circuit breakers for protection to
equipment and to people.
Since our analysis checks out, other options homeowners
might wish consider: THESE ARE NOT REQUIRED BY CODE
• Installing a Lightning Protection System on the roof of the
dwelling units would provide a greater level of safety and
protection for the owners and the building . This system
needs to be installed by a licensed contractor and this
would also have to comply with the National Electrical Code
Section 250.106 for bonding the electrodes of the Lighting protections system to the building Service Electrode
system. Electrical permits would be required.
• If homeowners would like to voluntarily upgrade their
electrical systems to comply with today’s CSST bonding
requirement to provide for a greater level of safety and protection, the Building Official has advised a limited service
permit should be obtained to perform this work – see link
for more on this permit http://www.pwcgov.org/government/dept/development/bd/Pages/Limited-Service-Repair-Permit-Program.aspx.
Again, I hope this has addressed all of the concerns raised.
Should you have any follow-up questions, please let me
know. If you believe that your home is non-compliant with
code under which it was constructed, please also let me
know and we can have an inspector come out and make a
determination of compliance and if the statute of limitations has expired.

Proposed Revision to the 2012 Design Guidelines – Roofs and Shingles
On June 25, 2015, the Board of Directors approved the publication of revised changes to the Roof and Shingle Section of the
Design Guidelines. The revision (italicized text) contains a section on attached roofs and the entire revision should be carefully
reviewed by all residents. Comments can be sent to the Covenants Administrator Chelsie Throckmorton at cthrockmorton@
heritagehunt.net by August 31, 2015.
Roofs
1. General: No items may be mounted on the roof area forward of the ridge line of a house (except for TV antennas, satellite
dishes, solar tubes, and required dryer, furnace, sewer, and kitchen exhaust vents installed by the developer or approved by the
Architectural Review Committee.
The following do not require approval of a DRA:
- Installation of skylights and solar tubes on rear roofs, and
- Replacement of attic ventilation fans on rear roofs with like fans.
The following do require approval of a DRA:
- Installation of new attic fans on rear roofs, and
- Installation of solar tubes forward of the ridge line. See the topic Solar Tubes below.
- Installation of any other items mounted on any roof area.
2. Modification of Roofs: Any modification to an existing roof, addition of an additional roof (construction of a porch or sun
room) or change to the style or color of existing roof shingles requires a DRA. See the topic shingles SHINGLES below.
3. Roof Repairs / Replacement: –roof repair or replacement of shingles is discussed in SHINGLES below.
4. Roof Maintenance:– Roofs must be maintained in good condition at all times. This includes but is not limited to repairing
wind damage to shingles, roof vents, ridge vents, and cleaning off moss/algae stains and streaks.
If approximately twenty five percent (~25%) of the surface of any roof section is stained with algae, the Covenants Administrator (CA), acting for the HH HOA, will issue a letter to the owner of the home requesting that the roof be cleaned. In cases where
the owner questions that the 25% level has been reached, they should contact the CA by email or written letter for re-determination or an appeal hearing.
The roof of each attached and detached single family dwelling unit is the maintenance, repair, and replacement responsibility of
each individual dwelling unit owner/owners pursuant to Article 6, Section 6.15 of the Declaration.
Owners, who require more than 30 days from the date of the initial letter to have the roof cleaned, may request an extension up to an additional 30 days in an email or written letter to the CA that explains the need for the extension. Owners, who
require an extension of more than 60 days from the date of the initial letter to have the roof cleaned, may request an extension
by submitting a written letter to the Board of Directors that explains the need for the extension.
All written letters to the Covenants Administrator and the Board of Directors should be delivered by hand to the CA at the
Marsh Mansion or sent via the postal service. The postal address is found on the next page of this issue (page 13).
Owners should be aware that algae may return on a roof that has been cleaned, and it may need to be cleaned again.
Owners who have their roofs professionally cleaned should be aware that roof cleaning contractors typically provide a warranty that the algae will not return within a specific period of time. The warranty time period varies greatly among contractors; therefore, owners should be sure to understand the terms of any warranty before selecting a contractor. If roof algae
returns within the warranty period, owners should contact the contractor.
Shingles & Roof Repairs 1. Roof Repairs: When roof repair is required that involves only a limited number of shingles a DRA is not required. The shingles
used for the repair must match the color and style/design of the existing shingles as closely as possible. If shingles are used
that do not closely match the color and style / design of the existing shingles on the roof, the HOA may require them to be replaced.
Replacement or repair of existing dryer, sewer or furnace vents and their associated flashings or boots does not require a
DRA.
Replacement or repair of existing solar tubes and skylights and their associated flashings does not require a DRA.
Replacement of ridge vents does not require a DRA. However, the color of the new ridge vent should closely match the color
of the existing ridge vent or the roof shingles.
2. Total Shingle Replacement: A total roof shingle replacement on an attached or detached single family dwelling requires the
approval of a DRA. To maintain the architectural design of the community, it is preferred that the color of the new shingles
closely match the color of the existing shingles. In any case, the color of the new shingles being used shall complement the
siding or trim color of the house. A brochure or sample of the proposed shingle must be submitted with the DRA. Shingles that
are energy radiating (sun reflecting in summer and heat absorbing in winter) may be considered.
In the event of an emergency situation, to preclude a leaking roof from damaging the insulation or the interior of the house,
owners should contact the Covenants Administrator at 703-743-5494 or the ARC Chair to request that action on their DRA be
expedited via email / telephone approval vice waiting for the next scheduled ARC meeting.
Shingles on porches and sun rooms must match those on the main roof of the house in both style/design and color. If the
main roof is re-shingled, the porch or sun room roof must be re-shingled at the same time so that the total roof will be uniform in
style/design and color.
8
The Heritage Horn • August 2015
Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club: www.heritagehunt.net
The two shingle styles / designs used in Heritage Hunt are shown below. Either style / design may be used when doing a
total roof replacement on a detached single family dwelling. For shared roofs on attached single family dwellings, see the topic
Attached Roofs below.
3. Addition of a New Roof: When a new roof is added to a detached or attached single family dwelling, such as a sun room or
porch, the shingles of the addition must match the color and style/design of the existing shingles on the house as closely as
possible. (See the topic DECKS / PORCHES / SUN ROOMS). If shingles are used that do not closely match the color and style / design of the existing shingles on the house roof, the HOA may require them to be replaced or require that the house roof be replaced
to match the porch or sun room roof.
4. Attached Roofs:
The owners of attached single family dwelling units are individually responsible for the maintenance, repair, and replacement of
their own roof. However, owners of attached single family dwelling units that have a “shared/common roof”, as shown in the picture below, where lot lines are not clearly delineated on the roof, are free to agree or come to an arrangement amongst themselves
as to how to deal with the maintenance, repair, or replacement of their “shared/common” roof.
Replacement of a “shared/common roof” on an attached single family dwelling requires approval of a DRA.
To maintain the overall design concept, the architectural design features, and visual and aesthetic appearance of the community,
the HOA strongly recommends and urges that when one part of a “shared/common roof” requires replacement, that all lot owners
in that unit join together to replace the entire roof at once. If this is not feasible:
a. the first unit owner to re-roof will be restricted to using shingles of the same design/style as the shingles currently on the
roof and a color that matches the current color as closely as possible; and
b. succeeding unit owners desiring to re-roof shall be restricted to using shingles from the same manufacturer as the owner
who previously re-roofed and of the same type, design/style, and color. If the shingles that were first used are no longer available, then the owner(s) must use a shingle that is the best match possible.
In the case of a. above, the Covenants Administrator will send a letter to other unit owners that are not re-roofing at the same
time advising them of the action being taken within their unit. Owners, who refuse to participate in the re-roofing project, will be
required to sign a statement stating that they:
•
have been warned of the risk of leakage occurring at the “property line / party wall”,
•
understand that when they elect to re-roof, they will be required to use shingles of the same manufacturer, style/design, and
color as the shingles used by the participating owners or the closest match possible.
If roof repair or complete re-shingling by one owner of an attached single family dwelling unit causes damage to an adjacent
dwelling unit, the provisions of Article 9 of the Declaration may apply if the party wall between units is damaged. Otherwise, the
HOA will NOT be involved in settling any disputes.
NOTICE: Roofers have been consulted regarding replacing only part of a shared/common roof on a shared/common roof unit and
not replacing the rest of the roof. Some say that the roofs may be effectively laced together and others say they cannot be effectively laced together and that leakage can be expected to occur at the place where the roofs are laced together.

Approved Revisions to the
2012 Design Guidelines:
Topic: Storage - Including subtopics
Vertical Storage Bins and Sheds
At the 6/25/2015 Board meeting, the Board unanimously voted to approve, publish, and distribute
a proposed change to the 2012 Design Guidelines
regarding the topic STORAGE that was announced in
the May 2015 HORN. One of the key things that this
change to the Design Guidelines does is to allow residents to install small vertical storage bins and sheds
that meet certain criteria.
Can you just go install a vertical bin or shed? NO! The
first step you must take is to obtain a Prince William
County (PWC) Zoning Administration permit. The
second step is to submit a Design Review Application
(DRA) to the Covenants Administrator for approval
by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) at one
of its regularly scheduled Wednesday meetings. The
DRA must be accompanied by the PWC permit and all
of the other supporting documentation called for in
the change to the Design Guidelines. This is a potentially substantial change to the view seen by rear
neighbors. So, notification of neighbors that will see
the vertical bin or shed is required.
How can you obtain the full text of this important
change to the 2012 Design Guidelines? You can go
to the front desk of the main clubhouse and obtain a
copy. You can also log into the HH website using your
user name and password. The in turn click on the following – HOA/Documents/Design Guidelines/Storage
2015 Modification. While you are at this location, you
can also see the other four modifications made to the
Design Guidelines in 2014 and 2015 regarding – Invisible Fences; Mailboxes and Mailbox Posts; Maintenance of Roofs (including algae); and Balloons (use of
during sales open house events).

At the 6/25/2015 Board meeting, the Board unanimously voted to approve, publish, and distribute to
the community a change to the 2012 Design Guidelines regarding the topic LIGHTNING PROTECTION
that is effective immediately.
Lightning Protection – Lightning protection systems
are permitted and submission of a Design Review Application (DRA) for approval is not required; however,
the Board of Directors and the Architectural Review
Committee strongly recommend that if a lightning
protection system is installed that:
• It be installed in accordance with the National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA) Code 780.
• It be installed by a certified installer.
The Heritage Horn • August 2015
Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club: www.heritagehunt.net
Approved Revisions (contd)
• That homeowners obtain a Underwriters Laboratories Master Label Certificate or a Lightning Protection
Institute Master Certificate.
It is the homeowner’s responsibility to obtain appropriate County permits and ensure that required inspections are carried out. Should lightning strike any
home in the community, with or without a lightning
protection system, the HH HOA assumes no responsibility for the damage that may occur to the home that
is struck or adjoining or nearby homes.

New Faces + New Ideas = Vibrant Committees & Community
Have you ever thought about why Heritage Hunt is such an
attractive place to call home? If not, let us assure you there
are 70+ resident volunteers that dedicate their time to serve
on committees, task forces and the Board of Directors that
ask questions and seek solutions that benefit the community
as a whole. Each year during the annual meeting the
community is given the opportunity to elect those
representatives or in the case of Light, Sound and TV appoint
members to serve on these important governing bodies. The
Association asks you to read on to learn more about each of
the committee’s function and even attend a committee meeting or two that might be of interest. If you think you found a
service area of interest then visit the Clubhouse Front Desk
to pick up a Candidacy Application and keep reading to see
what positions are open for election. We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting on December 8, 2015.
Board of Directors - Ken Aitchison, President
The Board’s role is to govern the Association and set the
policies, standards, procedures, programs and budgets for
the Association. Board members have the responsibility of
balancing the needs and obligations of the Community as a
whole with those of individual owners. Board members have
a fiduciary duty that requires Directors to act within their
authority, to exercise due care, and to act in good faith and
with ordinary care that they believe to be in the best interests of the Association. Board members rely on the Managing Agent for the daily operation of the Association and on
the Standing Committees for advice and recommendations.
Board Members serve as Liaisons to the Standing Committees and are expected to attend their respective Committee
meetings. There are two (2) regularly scheduled Board
meetings each month requiring attendance. In addition,
there may be other meetings during the month called for a
specific purpose such as appeal hearings, budget meetings
or Executive Sessions.
Yes, being a Board member requires a commitment, but it
also provides an opportunity to work with fellow volunteers
and enjoy the sense of accomplishment and fulfillment as
you experience being a volunteer leader in your Community.
Architectural Review Committee – Andy Johnson, Chair
The Committee is comprised of seven elected members who
serve for three (3) years and three (3) alternates appointed
by the BOD for one year terms. Elected members terms are
staggered so no more than 3 members terms expire in a
given year.
Meetings are held a 9 a.m. on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays
of the month in the Main Clubhouse Mountain View Room.
They generally last from 1-1/2 to 3 hours. The Committee
conducts business following the basics in Robert’s Rules of
Order.
Depending on the time of year, each member could be given
anywhere from 2-4 applications to review prior to the meeting. The applications are assigned about a week prior to the
meeting and are posted for review on Drop Box at least a
week prior to the meeting. Assigned applications are placed
in an envelope for committee members to pick up in the Club
House library. Any newly-elected member is given ample
time and assistance before they are required to handle applications on their own.
12
Once an application is assigned, the committee member
usually meets with the homeowner, reviews the application
on site, verifies the accuracy of the application, makes or
recommends corrections as needed, compares the application against the Design Guidelines, presents the application
to the full Committee at the Wednesday meeting, and makes
a motion regarding the application – approve, approve with
stipulations, deny for cause, or place on hold. After a second
of the motion and subsequent discussions, a vote is taken.
Each committee member has one vote. To pass, a motion
must be approved by a majority of the members present.
The Committee is not involved with enforcement of reported
violations. That is the job of the Covenants Administrator. Appeals of violations letters go to the Board. However,
the CA may ask the Committee for advice regarding how to
interpret the guidelines and whether or not a situation is or
is not a violation.
Budget and Finance Committee – Todd Counts, Chair
The primary responsibility of the Budget and Finance
Committee (B&FC) is to advise the board of directors on
Association financial and budgetary matters. The board of
directors may also assign the B&FC tasks from time to time
such as reviewing the monthly financial statements prepared
by the managing agent; reviewing the annual audit;
coordinating the preparation of an annual operating budget
in conjunction with the association’s managing agent and
other committees; preparing an annual long-term budget
projection; making recommendations for capital
improvements or enhancements and/or reviewing proposed
improvements in terms of their financial impacts and, as
appropriate, preparing a proposed long-range capital
improvements budget.
Expertise in accounting or finance is useful but anyone with
critical thinking skills will be an asset to the
Committee. A mix of committee members with accounting/
finance backgrounds and non-finance backgrounds would
be ideal for solving complex problems facing the HOA. We
urge you to attend our regular monthly meetings, which
are held the third Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the

we do and see if you might have an interest in serving on
the committee. Additionally, plan to attend any of the 2016
budget meetings held during late August, September and
October in the Marsh Mansion Parlor Room to obtain
first-hand knowledge of the budgeting process.
All committee seats have a three year term of service. This
year two of the seven seats will be up for election at the
annual meeting in December 2015. For your information a
copy of our 2015 calendar is posted on the Heritage Hunt
home page as well as copies of our charter and various
financial reports.
Community Relations Committee – Charlotte Kennedy,
Chair
The primary responsibility of the Community Relations
Committee (CRC) is to advise the board of directors and
inform the community about issues, concerns, and activities
of interest to Heritage Hunt residents. The CRC monitors
public and private sector activities and developments that
may impact Heritage Hunt; organizes and presents nonfood-and-beverage activities, informational programs and
events, of interest to residents. CRC also supports the CMC
managing agent in providing the board of directors with
policy recommendations designed to improve
communication efforts of the HOA.
Examples of CRC activities include arranging community
briefings on Gainesville land development projects
(Heritage Hunt Plaza, Gateway expansion, Promenade at
Virginia Gateway); attending Prince William County and
Gainesville district public meetings and informing the
community of issues affecting Heritage Hunt; sponsoring a
Resident Forum series featuring HH residents
describing their experiences and/or area of expertise;
sponsoring a series of medical presentations by Novant and
Fauquier Health specialists; providing a Foreign Service
lecture series conducted by former U.S. Embassy officials;
presenting Free Movie Night; coordinating an elementary
school volunteer program, and a Future Resident Task Force
to highlight all Heritage Hunt has to offer to future residents.
Emergency Preparedness Committee-Bernie Leech,
Chair
The Heritage Hunt Board of Directors has approved the
Emergency Preparedness Committee to become a fully electable committee. The current 5 members, all of which have
moved to Heritage Hunt in the past 3 years, we’re appointed
to continue the work started by Dick Powell and dozens of
dedicated Emergency Volunteers. Our main objective is to
prepare all residents to react to and deal with any natural
or man made emergency; to be self reliant. In addition to
the monthly Horn articles on safety and preparedness,we
encourage residents to be fully prepared by following the
guidelines of File for Life, Emergency Preparedness Checklist
and RNA (Ready, Notify and Act). We have held CPR and AED
training sessions which we hope to expand by having them
on a regular basis for all interested HH residents.
The more we educate, the better prepared we are. For any
residents that have an interest to be on the committee or to
be an Emergency Volunteer, please complete an application
that is available in the Clubhouse Lobby or online.
The Heritage Horn • August 2015
Facilities Committee - Al Stearns, Chair
The primary responsibility of the Facilities Committee is to
advise the Board of Directors on issues affecting the
maintenance, repair, use and enjoyment by the membership
of the commonly owned facilities. The facilities include the
main clubhouse, fitness center, Marsh Mansion, swimming
pools, tennis, front gate guard house, and the two rest rooms
on the golf course.
We review and approve contracts for facility maintenance,
repair and enhancements. We provide input to the annual
HOA budget and the special projects budget. We ensure that
budgeted projects are prepared for bidding and awarded for
the best value for the community. We invite residents’
suggestions for improvements and enhancements to our
community. We invite you to come to our monthly
meetings held on the first Thursday of each month at 1 PM in
the Mountain View Card room in the main clubhouse.
Food and Beverage Committee - Mary McFadden, Chair
The primary responsibilities of the Food and Beverage (F&B)
Committee are to advise the BOD on issues relating to food
and beverage operations at Heritage Hunt. This includes
development and implementation of social events,
recreation activities, and the delivery of food and beverage to
support such activities and programs.
The committee works closely with the food and beverage
managing agent (BCG). The members monitor the service,
menu offerings and events planned by BCG for our residents.
13
Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club: www.heritagehunt.net
New Faces (contd.)
The focus of the committee has grown to include providing
recommendations to the budget and finance committee in
preparation of the annual budget. The committee also
monitors the banquet bookings as they play an integral part
of achieving budgetary goals. Policies regarding the use of
the dining facilities are reviewed annually.
Committee members are expected to attend the monthly
meetings as well as act as a liaison with other committees.
Keeping abreast of correspondence within the committee in
a timely manner is expected therefore a working knowledge
of Word processing and e-mail programs is helpful. A report
at the monthly Board meetings inform the community of our
progress and concerns. We also submit quarterly reviews
of BCG’s performance to the Board. It is our hope that the
time and energy put forth by this committee will continue to
improve the quality of dining for Heritage Hunt residents.
Golf Committee - Richard Murphy, Chair
The Golf Committee in conjunction with Billy Casper Golf
(BCG) recommends golf policies, activities and financial
objectives to the Board of Directors to ensure a successful program. In addition, the committee submits quarterly
reviews of BCG’s performance to the Board.
The committee continuously reviews procedures for
balancing non-member requests for use of the golf course,
equitable use of the course by resident men’s and women’s
golf associations, and speed of play on the course to insure
its maximum available use.
The committee schedules outings for all levels of players
several times a year. Through the Pro Shop, it annually
maintains an excess of 30,000 tee time schedules, offers
clinics and private lessons, responds to member questions
regarding golf at Heritage Hunt and provides desirable
merchandise to players and non-players in the Pro Shop. It
monitors the maintenance of the golf course, its security and
improvements through the Greens Superintendent.
During the year, budget reports are reviewed monthly to
insure the golf operation is meeting its budget objectives as
well as to “flag” changes that might be necessary in
preparing the next year’s golf budget. As emergencies with
golf course maintenance arise, requests are submitted to the
Budget and Finance committee.
Grounds Committee – Jim Cumming, Chair
The primary responsibility of the Grounds Committee is to
advise the Board of Directors on issues affecting the use and
enjoyment of the commonly owned grounds (non golf course
areas) by the membership. In particular, the Grounds Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding grounds management, maintenance, access security,
common grounds and roads safety, and enhancements.
The Grounds Committee oversees an operating budget of
$1,102,170 for 2015. Included in this are contracts for nongolf landscaping, snow removal, front gate attendants, trash
removal, pond and water features, signs, and exterior lights.
Grounds also provides oversight for nearly $300,000 in
reserve funds to use for repair and replacement of pavement
and sidewalks, asphalt, walls and fencing, the non-golf irriga-

tion system, and needed tree and plant replacement.
The Grounds Committee takes part in contractor implementation of existing contracts under our budget control and
also works on and contributes to the process of re-competing these contracts. Also, the Grounds Committee recommends changes regarding the maintenance, improvement,
and development on common grounds during the preparation of the annual budget.
The Grounds Committee works closely with our contractors,
HH HOA BOD, HH HOA Management , and Heritage Hunt
residents to ensure our common areas are maintained and
public safety issues are controlled and resolved promptly.
The Grounds Committee invites all residents to attend our
monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 2:30
PM in the Mountain View Room of the main Clubhouse.
Light, Sound and TV (LSTV) Committee - Jerry Surbey
and Larry Alger, Co-Chairs
Would you enjoy participating on a team of Heritage Hunters
who perform a visible and valuable service to the community and have a good time doing it? We’re talking about the
LSTV Committee (and we do a lot more). Our team consists
of 20 residents and, seriously, we’d love to have more men
and women join our team so that we can provide greater
service and spread the workload. We do a variety of LSTVlike activities, including:
• Live broadcasting and replay of the Board of Directors’
Meetings
• Setting up, and operating lighting and sound systems
for: Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus, Little Theater,
Women’s Organization, Movie Nights, Food & Beverage
events, all the committees, resident clubs and other activities that need our support
• Setting up and operating our lap tops and projectors for
any clubhouse or Marsh Mansion event that requires it.
• Engineering, installing and maintaining improvements
to our systems in the ballroom and card room and the
front gate security system
In short, there is something for everyone. New members do
not have to be expert in anything related to what we do, just
interested in learning. We provide all the training and on
the job experience you will need before we turn you loose on
your own (with assistance of a senior member, if needed or
wanted). Of course, if you are expert in anything we do, we
will also welcome you with open arms. We get a lot of kudos
from community residents and outsiders who enjoy our
services. Stop by the LSTV room on the lower level of the
Clubhouse some Monday morning and get more information.
So if you want to continue the proud service tradition that
has helped Heritage Hunt win several top community honors
then attend one or more of the committee meetings and ask
questions to those that currently serve. You will find that
they are all personable and care deeply about the future of
Heritage Hunt. Lastly, make sure to stay connected by visiting the community website and reading articles that will be
presented in upcoming issues of The Heritage Horn. You can
make a difference and we hope to see you get plugged in.

Do your friends
want to live
here too?
The Future Residents Task Force will hold the Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club (HHG&CC) Community Open House on Sunday, October 18, 2015, from
12:30 to 4:00 p.m. Mark your calendars. As you
may (or may not) know, the Future Residents Task
Force coordinates a Community Open House here at
Heritage Hunt. On the day of the Community Open
House many of our common facilities are staffed with
resident volunteers that greet visitors, answer visitor’s questions about HHG&CC, pass out folders with
community information and the most current weekly
list of properties for sale or rent (on the HH website
under “About Us”, “Real Estate”, “Property Listing”),
and as needed, provide tours of our amenities/facilities. We don’t sell house. We sell Heritage Hunt as
a place to live! If you wish to volunteer on that day
for any or all of the time, contact Kathy Aust,
[email protected], 703-743-5902. Thanks!

In Position on the Golf
Course
Pace of Play is critical to the growth and success of
Heritage Hunt CC; and to the enjoyment of our Members. We speak often of our expectation of each Group
playing 18 holes in 4 hours 20 minutes or less in
every tournament.
We also talk often about your Group “Maintaining
your position on the golf course with the Group in
front of you.” The question, then, is how can I tell if I
am “In Position” to the Group in front of me?
In our HHGC, you and your Group are “In Position
with the Group in Front of You” when:
* On a Par 3 – your Group arrives at the tee box as the
Group in front of you is making their last putt or 2
and/or replacing the flag and walking off the green.
* On a Par 4 – your Group arrives at the tee box as the
Group in front of you is arriving at the green.
* On a Par 5 – your Group arrives at the tee box as the
Group in front of you is hitting or driving away from
their approach shots to the green/3rd shots.
When your group arrives at a tee box sooner than
these situations, you are ahead of your expected pace.
Should your group arrive at a tee box later than any of
these situations, your group is out of position with the
group in front of you. Speed up your pace of play immediately until you are back in a position described
above; then maintain your position to the group in
front of you for the remainder of your round.

Yellow Stakes Define the Margin of or
Identify a Water Hazard
Water Hazards Rule 26
Water Hazard: A Water Hazard is marked with yellow
stakes and/or yellow line.
1. Play the ball where it lies without penalty, or
2. Under penalty of one stroke, you can play the ball
from where your last shot was played, or
3. Under penalty of one stroke, you may drop the
ball any distance behind the water hazard, keeping
a straight line between the spot where the ball is
dropped (A), the point where the ball last crossed the
margin of the hazard (B) and the hole location (C).
(see image below).
4. Please note that option #3 is not the line-of-flight
of the ball as it entered the hazard. It is the line to the
flag so it may be a different angle.

Golf for SMGA – August 14
On August 14, Heritage Hunt will host its annual tournament to raise money for SMGA – The Salute Military
Golf Association and The Bull Run Warrior Retreat in
Haymarket. SMGA provides training, equipment and
playing opportunities for armed forces personnel with
serious injuries since 9/11 who have chosen golf as
a means of physical and behavioral recovery. These
wounded veteran SMGA members play golf for free at
HH. We expect 20-25 SMGA members to participate.
Foursomes will play for prizes in a friendly format.
Check-in will start at 8:30am followed by a 10:00
shotgun start, 3:00 reception, and a 3:45 wrap-up.
The fee is $100 per person. It is not too late to register a foursome by completing flyers available at the
front desk or the golf pro shop.
Platinum, Gold and Bronze sponsor levels are available to groups starting at $400. For information to
sponsor this event, contact Trudy Franklin at 703625-4993 or Ron Cayton, 703-743-5468. Note that
this event is not directly associated with the Wounded
Warrior Project.
So act now to play along side of and show your appreciation for these men and women veterans who have
made such life-changing sacrifices for our freedom.

is holed out. The best score of the two is posted. The
tournament will have 3 winners in each flight. Pick a
partner or be paired by the pro shop.
All golfers must have a current handicap to qualify
for play. Special note: each player will be required to
contribute 6 drives for the round. Partners will be limited to no more than 8 strokes apart. If you have any
questions, please contact Judy Murphy 703-743-2981

Food and Beverage (F&B)
Improvements
We have recently revamped the kitchen at Heritage
Hunt to better serve its two main purposes, Resident
Dining and Outside Events. In the process we also
enhanced and provided a major face lift to the Dining
Room and the adjacent Lounge. More improvements
are in the offing such as the possibility for a location
of a bar somewhere in the Clubhouse.
We have also taken on a new Point of Sales (POS) system, Clubsoft and ReServe to improve resident reservations over the Internet for both golf and F&B. Any
new POS system will entail a learning process for both
the customer and the server. We are getting used to
the new system which for F&B has only been in operation for three months.
In addition, Clubsoft, is being used by Billy Casper Golf
(BCG) to gather numerous statistics about the F&B
process. Probably, unbeknown to the resident, our
F&B staff is using the system to measure things that
are important to the customer such as the time to provide their drinks and more importantly their entrees.
Finally, the time to deliver their checks is another matter the resident cares about.
Your F&B Committee is also learning from the data
provided by Club Soft. Each month that we meet we
are able to examine the more correct statistics that
the new system brings to us. Let’s face it, the F&B
industry is very competitive and the consumers have
many choices. Under current policies, only residents
and their guests may experience the pleasantry of a
good meal served in our Dining Room for a fair price
and with good service to boot. The DR is truly an
amenity and not likely to result in a profit anytime
soon.
That is why we continue to offer our facilities to outside events, be that weddings or business meetings.
And residents may utilize our facilities at a resident
rate for anniversaries or birthday parties, etc. Many
of the organizations that function at HH to include the
HHWO and the NVRMGA use our facilities on a regular
basis.
The F&B Committee is endeavoring to provide our
residents with a first class experience at a reasonable
cost. But, we are not likely to compete on a cost basis
with dining outside HH. For the somewhat higher
price we must charge, we hope to enhance the HH
lifestyle event after event.
Should you not be satisfied please contact both our
F&B provider, BCG, and any member of the F&B committee. We are attentive to your needs.

Ever wonder who puts out all the American flags
during major holidays? Recently, I had the pleasure
of meeting one of your neighbors and discovered just
who is responsible for many of the flags placed in
Heritage Hunt. His name - Wally Ward and for the last
several years this charitable and patriotic neighbor
has proudly been responsible for much of the placement of American flags throughout Heritage Hunt. It
started with “putting up 47 flags on Heritage Valley
Way (HVW) some 6 or 7 years ago. Soon people in the
upper HVW requested flags. This effort has expanded
to over 30 streets requiring 600 to 700 flags depending on the holiday,” states Mr. Ward. “I enjoy putting
the flags on the mail boxes & receive many great comments from the residents of HH both verbal & written.
Some of the residents want to give me money for my
efforts; however, I tell them that is not necessary. If
they insist, I apply the donation to buy new flags &
attachments to fix on the mail boxes,” he adds. This
patriotic spirit has spread to several other families
who help, David Weisman of Cavalletti Ct., Don Jewell
of Netherstone Ct. and Willard Scott places some 200
flags on most of Fieldstone Way and side streets. Mr.
Ward figures about 70 percent of the community is
covered including the front entrance, Clubhouse, and
Condos.
As to why he does it, Mr. Ward recalls a mother sharing with him that when her son returned from Iraq
and saw the flags, he cried. “He was so overcome in
seeing them as it recognized his effort for fighting for
his country was not in vain.” A special thanks to Wally
Ward and other HH residents that at a personal cost
choose to do something that brings a sense of community and national pride. May we join Wally and others
in finding ways we can show our community pride.
Mark Hillis, Lifestyle Director
My Neighbors Porch
The Heritage Hunt Fine Art Group is combing the
neighborhood for beautiful porches to paint. Those
chosen will be on display beginning mid-September
through November in the downstairs hallway of the
clubhouse. You may find a creative rendition of your
porch there. All HH artists are encouraged to join in.
In case you didn’t know: the HH photographers and
the artists alternate two month spans in that location.
Don’t miss the September exhibit.
Many of our artists compete and sell in local art
shows. Most recently two of the group won first and
second place awards at highly reputable shows. Congratulations Linda O’Hearn and Dick Silva.

Pop Tops
Update
In late June, we took 85
pounds of pop tops to the
Ronald McDonald House in
Richmond, VA. This brings
the total for three years to
347 pounds. They get premium rates from their recycler and use the proceeds to
pay for the utilities in their
nine bedroom, four story
townhouse on Monument
Avenue in the Richmond Historic District. It is located
not far from the VCU Hospital (formerly Medical
College of Virginia), where they also have a cry room
for parents who don’t want to leave their very sick
children, but need a place to take a break. They also
provide many small amenities for their guests. Please
start, or continue, to collect them and drop them off
on our porch at 13554 Ryton Ridge Lane. Lets try to
get back in the over 100 pounds per year category in
2016. Every pop top counts!! Thank you.

Giving Circle
The Giving Circle of Heritage Hunt is extending a
great big THANK YOU!!!! to all of the Heritage Hunt
residents who so generously contributed items to our
Annual Soap and Paper Drive. Low income elderly and
disabled persons and families with children who are
receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program), commonly known as Food Stamps, are
only able to use these benefits for food stuffs. Marie
Louden, the coordinator of the Soap and Paper Drive,
reported that you donated more items than we have
ever collected. The Giving Circle takes these items to
the Haymarket Food Pantry and they were very grateful for all of the items that they were able to include in
their regular food distribution program. There were
over 1000 diapers and 500 feminine sanitary items
donated. These items make a big difference in the
lives of people who are on very limited incomes.
The Giving Circle is on summer break so there is no
meeting in August. The September 15th meeting will
be the kick-off to the fall grant award process. This
will be an excellent opportunity for new members to
learn about the grant award process and hear about
the impact the 2014 grants have had in the community. There will be more information in the September
Horn about this meeting. Please feel free to Contact
Nancy Thompson, Co-Chair at 703-743-1064 or Ric
Perez at 703-743-5620 for information about joining
the Giving Circle.

Thank You Heritage Hunt
Dear Heritage Hunt,
On June 20th our attached home on Affirmed Place
was hit by lightning and the resulting fire caused
extensive damage to our residence and our neighbors. During the hours that the firefighters worked
on the buildings we encountered many people who
came by to express their concern, offer assistance
and provide food and refreshments. Some were
close by neighbors, others were HH residents who
cared. The Red Cross personnel who monitored our
vital signs, the Gainesville and PWC Personnel who
kept us informed of the status of the situation and
treated us kindly - we greatly appreciate their efforts on our behalf.
We will never be able to thank many of these nice
people individually. So we would like to use this
note to thank all. It is nice to know that we are surrounded by caring residents who are there when
you are in need - public servants who performed
efficiently and humanly - people who will be there
for us going forward. We are fortunate to be a part
of this community. Thank Heritage Hunt!

Garden Club at Heritage
Hunt - Fall Programs
The Garden Club at Heritage Hunt is very pleased to
announce a private tour of the Museum and Gardens
at Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown on Thursday,
September 24, 2015. Their Docents will lead 3 separate groups starting at 10:00 a.m. The tour ends at
11:30 a.m. You can then shop in the gift shop (which
opens at 12:15), explore the museum further and
have lunch on your own either in nearby restaurants,
or you can bring a bag lunch. Our private coach will
leave the main HH Clubhouse at 8:15 a.m. and return
from Georgetown at 2:00 p.m. For those of you who
don’t know about this marvelous place, it was created by Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss, collectors
and patrons of art and scholarship in the humanities.
Robert Bliss was a diplomat in the US Foreign Service,
and the Blisses traveled and lived in South America
and Europe. After a long search for a permanent home
in Washington, DC, they purchased the 1801 Federalstyle house and property in June of 1920. Throughout
their lives, they were enthusiastic collectors of art
and books and ardent supporters of music and the
arts. The Blisses renovated and expanded the original structure of the house, adding the Music Room in
1929, and the wing to house the Byzantine Collection
in 1940.
Mildred Barnes Bliss worked closely with renowned
landscape designer Beatrix Farrand to transform the
land surrounding the house into terraced gardens and
vistas. The Pre-Columbian Pavilion, designed by architect Philip Johnson to house Mr. Bliss’s collection of
Pre-Columbian art, which had been on long-term loan
to the National Gallery of Art, opened to the public in
1963. The Garden Library was added in the same year,
to house and display Mrs. Bliss’s collection of rare and
modern books related to all aspects of the history of
gardens.
Due to space restrictions at Dumbarton Oaks, the tour
is limited to 30 people and therefore only members
of the Garden Club. Membership for the calendar
year is still only $10 per household, which includes
family members who are residents of Heritage Hunt
at the same address. If you are interested, please
contact Joan Oakford at 703-743-1075, or email Joan
at [email protected], to reserve your seat. The
cost of the tour will be $30 which covers the bus and
the private tour. Payment will be due by September
1. Checks should be made out to the Garden Club at
Heritage Hunt and can be dropped off to Joan Oakford
at 13452 Fieldstone Place.
The Annual Garden Club Tea Fund-raiser is scheduled for October 15th. Please save the date. We will
have three seating’s at 1 PM. 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. This is
strictly a reservations only event, as always. Members
and their guests are welcome. Please contact Joan
Oakford to secure your reservations at 703-743-1075.

Calling All Crooners
The Heritage Hunt men’s chorus, Men in Song, is
seeking to expand its membership, to provide an even
more robust sound for its audiences in HH and the
community, and to further enhance the fun and camaraderie already enjoyed within the group.
The Men in Song present a fall concert, a spring
concert, and a Christmas sing-along concert, plus
occasional special performances, in the Great Oak
Ballroom of the main HH clubhouse. The chorus also
entertains selected community groups, such as nursing home residents and the sisters of the Benedictine
Monastery. In addition, the group is often invited to
give brief performances, usually patriotic songs, at
certain public and private meetings, such as the town
hall meetings held by County Supervisor Peter Candland.
No formal musical training or singing experience is
required to join the Men in Song, although the ability
to read music is helpful. (If you don’t, we’ll guide you
through your part!) So if you enjoy singing in church,
or in the shower, or to your significant other, regardless of whether you’re a tenor, baritone, or bass, we
would love to have you join us. Although the members are men, the director, Janet Lunsford, is an accomplished soprano as well as pianist, choral director,
and teacher of music.
Rehearsals are generally held on Monday evenings
from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, usually in the Great Oak Ballroom, from the last Monday in August (the 31st this
year) through mid-June. Additional rehearsals occur
ahead of a concert, either on other weekday evenings
or Saturday mornings. Feel free to just show up at any
rehearsal, or to call Bob Cloud (703-743-5622), David
Klingman (703-743-1027), or Janet Lunsford (703609-1167). We look forward to meeting you!

To complete your evening, join your friends and

Bring your friends & family to HHC’s fifth annual
Swing Dance Party! The dozens of featured tunes will
include your favorites: Chattanooga Choo Choo; Moonlight Serenade; Make Someone Happy; Sing, Sing, Sing;
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.
This time, we’re really “pulling all the stops”. Doc
Scantlin’s 17-piece Imperial Palms Orchestra
includes(as you would expect) reeds, brass, piano,
drums, bass but also a string section that rounds out
and sweetens the sound. That’s the vital difference
between a band and an orchestra. And, yes, we’ll actually have Fritzee’s grand piano up on the big stage (not
just a keyboard!).
Topping off Doc’s authentic swing sound – once acclaimed by Forbes as: “The Best Band in America” –
we’ll also enjoy Doc’s 6-member vocal team, including:
“The Girlfriends” quartet, Doc himself and Chou Chou,
whom WAMU’s Hot Jazz Saturday Night host, Rob
Bamberger, salutes as: “…that irresistible and manwithering lovely, the divine Chou Chou.”
The Washington Post sums it up best: “One of the most
fascinating nights out in Washington: Scantlin is the
consummate showman. Chou Chou’s breathy croon
recalls Marilyn Monroe and Betty Boop.”
As usual, our show is at 7:30, with the doors opening
at 7:00. There will be a cash bar and table seating.
Sign up early by completing HHC’s ivory reservation
form, available in the clubhouse, or print one out from
HHC’s website: www.hhconcerts.org. Many concerts
sell out. The sign up deadline is noon of the day before
the concert. Questions, call Elena @ 703-743-1820.

Upcoming Little Theater
Production: People,
Problems, and Reinvention
Have you ever thrown a pebble in a pond or puddle
and watched the ripples circle out until they reach
the shore? In families one little change is like that
pebble. It changes everyone it touches and even some
it doesn’t.
Our next play “Social Security” by Andrew Bergman
is that pebble comes to life. An event occurs and
the whole family dynamic changes. In a very funny,
yet poignant manner, it reinvents the lives of all the
people it touches.
Originally performed on Broadway in 1986 (and subsequently all over the country), “Social Security” was
directed by Mike Nichols and starred Marlo Thomas
and Olympia Dukakis. A great big challenge for our
cast, but I know they will do a fabulous job and make
it THEIR play. The HHLT cast includes Bob and Valerie
Bowman, Jim Burwell, Kathy Carrico, Gayle Chisholm,
and Walt Meyer. They are hard at work learning lines,
entrances and exits, and all the other things actors do
to make a play come alive. Three months of intense
concentration and ENDLESS rehearsals are what it
takes to get it right.
The production dates are October 6, 7, and 8 and concert seating will be the order of the day. The tickets
are $10 pp and the light blue reservation form will be
available on September 1. So mark your calendars for
an evening of lively laughter and surprising insight as
characters come to terms with themselves and their
changing family relationships.

Both our scheduled hikes in June were competed as
scheduled. We began with a return to Eleanor Lawrence Park in Centreville. There are over 4 miles of
shaded, primarily natural surface trails. We were grateful for the shaded trails on the sunny, hot and humid
day we were there. We hiked about 2 hours before
giving in to the heat. It was a perfect hiking location for
the weather conditions.
Later in the month we visited the State Arboretum of
Virginia in Blandy. Several hikers requested we hike
there after the area was featured in Haymarket Magazine. It was another warm overcast and humid day. We
hiked around 4 miles on gravel road like trails and over
the grounds. The scenery was beautiful. There was no
shade so it worked out well that the sun was not out
that day. There were a few sprinkles as we ended the
hike. We packed lunches and enjoyed the view from
the picnic pavilion overlooking the area. While we
were under the pavilion eating lunch, there were heavy
downpours. We took advantage of the clearing and
return to sprinkles to head back to our cars.
We plan to take advantage of some of our local parks
for our August hikes, returning to Burke Lake Park
in Burke. This is a 4.7 mile gravel surfaced loop trail
around the lake. Then we will stay in Haymarket to
explore the Long Park trails. There are 4 miles of natural surface trails over wooded, hilly terrain along the
Catharpin Creek.

Baci Grandi Wins Third
Straight Bocce League Title
But it was not easy. Based on the number of teams, the
odds of winning three years in a row would be one in
6,048.
Baci Grandi overcame a grand slam by The Tornadoes
and won the first game 11-9 with some last minute
heroics. That game could have gone either way as The
Tornadoes were not backing down at all.
The second game shifted to Court 2 and The Tornadoes
stormed back to win a one-sided game 11-5.
The third game was also on Court 2 with The Tornadoes off to a 4-1 lead. Everyone was stunned as the
Cinderella team was taking down the champs. And
then it happened. The Tornadoes were in position to
take a 5-1 lead when they elected to shoot and not take
the point and, as you can figure out, it backfired and instead of 5-1 it was 4-3. With that reprieve, Baci Grandi
seized the opportunity, and roared ahead including a
grand slam to prevail 11-7.
In an interesting development, two Baci Grandi players
were not available for this match, so the remaining four
players were all women. Bocce is a great sport for both
men and women and this is evidence that women are
equal or better. The Tornadoes, captained by Ed Rozenblat, did a fine job of truly challenging Baci Grandi.
The games were played in front of 35 fans who all
witnessed some fine bocce and good second guessing
of the strategies.
Congratulations to Baci Grandi shown proudly displaying their trophies.

Whether you ride with the cycling club or ride alone,
kudos to all of you that get out there and ride. My
orthopedist loves that I quit pounding my knees with
running and playing softball and went to biking. Cardiologists love biking too.
June 15th four hardy cyclists went down and rode the
top ring of Prince William Forest. To make sure they
got it right, they did it three times. June 18th, twelve
cyclists rode to National Harbor for burgers at Elevation Burger and submarines at Subway next door. Four
started and ended in Vienna, six started at Bon Air Park
in Arlington, and two started at Gravely Point a little bit
before Reagan National Airport. Some folks have found
a route that leaves HH, goes through Piedmont and
along route 15 to Dominion Valley, goes out the back of
Dominion Valley by the fire station, follows Antioch to
Waterfall and picks up Mountain Road, follows Mountain Road to Pev’s Paintball at route 15, crosses route
15 onto New Road and follows it to a right on Braddock
Road, left on Northstar, right on Tall Cedars and left on
Stone Carver to Stone Ridge Village Center for a bite to
eat before returning to HH. It is about 40 miles round
trip with lots of scenic views and a few challenging
hills. We are working on another route that will be bit
less challenging than this one.
The Potomac Peddlers bike club has announced that
the ride they sponsor each September, Back Roads
Century, has moved from Berryville, VA to Shepherdstown, WV and will be held on Sunday, September 20th.
There is more information at https://potomacpedalers.
site-ym.com/?brchome. Also, the folks who run the HH
Charity Classic have provided notice they are planning
to have their annual walk/run/bike event on Saturday,
September 26th. Those bikers who participate ride approximately 10 miles during this event at a low speed
consistent with the skills of young and older riders
alike. The entry fee gets you a T-shirt and helps the
event raise money for charity.
Currently, the Cycling Club is meeting every Monday –
Friday at 8:00 AM at the Marsh Mansion. Persons not
yet on the HH Cycling Club email list may get on the list
by emailing Bob Shannon at [email protected].
Being on the list will allow you to know when weather
conditions are considered too severe to ride locally or
when the club is going to take a special ride away from
HH, like riding the W&OD trail or going to National
Harbor.
On Tuesdays the Club conducts a leisurely ride lasting 60 minutes ( plus or minus a minute or two), over
mostly level terrain, that stops for a water break at 30
minutes and at the Giant Starbucks coffee shop at Merchants Square in Dominion Valley for coffee and chit
chat. Then we ride back to Heritage Hunt.

Beat the Heat With These
Summer Exercise Tips
Summer is definitely a time that we love and hate. We
love being able to wear shorts, t-shirts and sandals
while doing some of our favorite outdoor activities,
but with it comes some danger we all need to pay
attention to. That is why ultra-endurance athlete and
renowned fitness trainer, Joe Decker, offers a few
suggestions to help keep us on track with our fitness
routines amidst the summer heat.
It starts with choosing the right time of day. Typically
before 10 AM and after 3 PM are recommended as
they are the hottest hours of the day for most areas.
He also suggests wearing loose, light colored clothing
as it reflects the heat better. “Hi-tech” clothing tends
to be a good choice.
A few other essentials include sunscreen, a hat, sun
glasses and a water bottle to stay hydrated when
outdoors. He recommends drinking water before,
during and after an exercise routine, typically every
15 minutes. Included with hydration he recommends
replenishing one’s electrolyte and salt intake with
Succeed capsules (consult your doctor prior to use).
Lastly, listen to your body and stop immediately if you
are feeling faint or dizzy. So don’t let the heat beat
your summer routine and stay safe.

Summer wouldn’t be summer without a good ole fashion barbecue and what better way to celebrate than
with a few friends and neighbors. That is just what
several off Alderwood and Fieldstone Way (pictured
above) did to celebrate this past July 5th. Thirty five
gathered for a delightful pot luck at the Jones’ home.
This is another great example of how Heritage Hunt
lives the Active Adult mantra.
With over 100 clubs, nine committees, a dozen fitness
classes, monthly dining/golf events and excursions it
would be a challenge for anyone to not find something
of interest to be engaged in Heritage Hunt. And if for
some chance none of these offerings interest you,
you can always start your own club/group. “I think
of recent club start ups the HH Shooters and Allegro
that point to such a rich and vibrant lifestyle culture
here in Heritage Hunt,” states Lifestyle Director, Mark
Hillis. “It shows that residents in Heritage Hunt have
a diverse interest and really enjoy building relationships through those common interests,” he adds.
Getting homeowners to move from just neighbors to
friends can be a challenge in every community. However, one might be surprised at what the smallest act
of kindness can do to build a healthy neighbor relationship and even friendship. “I wouldn’t have thought
that helping my neighbor move some furniture in his
home would turn into a deep friendship where even
my kids considered our neighbors as family while we
lived over a thousand miles from family and friends,”
recalls Mark Hillis. “We shared family traditions, cups
of sugar, and built some great memories together,” he
adds. All of this started with just offering a hand to
move some furniture.
The same can be true with those in Heritage Hunt. A
compliment over someone’s lawn/garden, throwing a
neighborhood barbecue, giving a cup of sugar or offering a helping hand can speak volumes that may break
the ice to building a great friendship. Get out and join
club or consider starting a new one. Keep reading The
Heritage Horn and check out your
community website www.HeritageHunt.net to stay
connected. You are what makes Heritage Hunt great!
