JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY / Year of Consecrated Life
FR. GÉRARD’S CORNER
January 17, 2016
PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
Epiphany celebrates Jesus’ manifestation
to the Gentiles; the feast of his baptism
marks his manifestation to Israel. Cana’s
wedding feast fulfills Isaiah’s vision of God’s
once forsaken people now espoused, and
celebrates Jesus “reveal[ing] his glory”
to the more intimate circle of disciples, who “began
to believe in him” (John 2:11). Therefore, Jesus’ sign
(John’s term for miracle), far from simply saving an
anonymous couple embarrassment, begins God’s saving
marriage with humanity in Jesus’ person and ministry.
This marriage was consummated on the cross:
“Consummatum est. It is accomplished.”
Please pray for the following priests this week:
From the cross, Jesus calls Mary “Woman,” the New Eve,
mother of all who are redeemed by Jesus’ passion. At
Cana too, Jesus calls Mary “Woman,” and as mother,
Mary intercedes with Jesus on the couple’s behalf.
“Mother Church” too intercedes at every Eucharist, not for
Jesus to transform water into wine, but bread and wine
into Jesus’ Body and Blood. Each Eucharist thus provides
us, not with the “bitter wine” of God’s wrath or the “bad
wine” of infidelity condemned by the prophets, but “the
good wine kept until now,” these days between Jesus’
first coming and glorious return, when God’s marriage
with humanity will be truly fulfilled in “the supper of the
Lamb.”
Jan 22 Rev. John Collins, St. Robert Ballarmine Catholic
Church, Burbank
After interceding with Jesus, Mary, traditionally invoked
as “Mother of Mercy,” instructs Cana’s servants, “Do
whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). So “Mother Church,”
especially during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, instructs us
to use the Spirit’s manifold gifts in generous service of the
human family, whose wine—“life more abundantly”—so
often seems to have run out.

Fr. Gérard, our pastor, would like to speak with the
parishioner who spoke to Bishop Wilkerson after the
4:00 p.m. Mass on December 24. The conversation was
regarding a regular contribution to the St. John Eudes
building fund that is sent directly to the Archdiocese rather
than to our record keepers here at the parish. The Bishop
does not remember the name of this generous person.
If you are that person, or know who that person might be,
please contact Fr. Gerard at 818-341-3680 ext. 106 or
send an email to [email protected]. Once we
identify this person, we can make use of these funds in
the way they were intended to be used, and will be able to
thank him for his generous contributions.

SANDWICH SUNDAY
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
St. John Eudes Parish
Sandwich Sunday
Children’s Ministry is pleased
to offer two opportunities during
our 11:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Masses to help our children
better understand and pray the
Liturgy.
The priest invites children to come
to the altar. After the priest gives
children a blessing, liturgy leaders and assistants take the
children to the designated area. The main goal of the
Children's Liturgy of the Word is to help the children grow
closer to God and His people. We read and explain the
Bible readings to them. We also pray, read, sing, and act
out stories to enable children to follow in the footsteps of
Jesus Christ every day. After the Liturgy, the children
return to Mass before the gifts are taken to the altar.
Today, January 17
The third Sunday of every month
We’ll prepare sandwich lunches after 12:45 p.m. Mass.

The capital campaign has achieved another big improvement step in the church. The 12 chandeliers in the church
were upgraded to LED lights on January 6, 2016. This
will not only save on the electric bills, but will also give the
whole church a more pleasant light during the liturgies.
The new lighting system, along with the fresh paint job in
late January, will make our church even more beautiful!
THE FOOD PANTRY - THANK YOU!
Thank you so much to everyone
who donated food during the
holidays. This really helped the
us to distribute food to our families in need for Christmas.
Your generosity is gratefully
appreciated!

DID YOU KNOW?
How do parents handle an admission
of abuse? . . .
No parent wants their children to suffer
from abuse of any kind. However, if a
child discloses any instance of abuse,
how you handle this information is critical
to their well-being. One of the most important things you
can do when a child discloses their abuse is not over react, despite the strong and often overwhelming emotions
of anger that you are experiencing at that moment. Be
certain that you show the child great love and concern
through calm, reflective words of understanding and
compassion. For a copy of the Virtus® article “After
Abuse is Disclosed” and more tips on how to handle
abuse disclosures email [email protected].

JUBILEO DE LA MISERICORDIA /Año de la Vida Consagrada
INTRODUCCIÓN A LA LITURGIA DEL DÍA
Hoy comenzamos un tramo del tiempo
Ordinario que durará alrededor de un
mes.
vemos a diario.
