a message from the president
Dear Family of Mary,
I have always told you “St. Mary’s High School is the best school in the world for young men.” I really want
you to understand this is not simply a slogan for a marketing campaign. Evidence abounds: our seniors are
off to Washington University, St. Mary’s University, St. Louis University, Rockhurst, Mizzou, Rolla, Missouri
State and all points in-between with $1.2 million in scholarships ($15,000/man) for their freshman year of
college. Our faculty have been acknowledged regionally and nationally for their excellence (Kevin Hacker,
Jane Goff, Michelle Klimpel, Valerie Todd, Kris Ranciglio, Jenn Sykora, Alex DeMatteis, Jay McGillick and
Frank Sohm) in the last three years. No school has worked longer or harder to understand the minds of boys
and to design a curriculum and programs to meet their needs.
63111 will never equal 63131; our beautiful 26 acre campus will never look like a small college campus; but
what happens here happens nowhere else in the world. God’s glory is never more clearly revealed than where
God’s abundant grace and mercy encounters the vulnerable potential of our human spirit. Our mission has
always unfolded at the foot of the cross, with Mary and John, where we pledge ourselves every day to fulfill
Mary’s mission of bringing Jesus into the world. It will always be difficult. It will never resemble the American
dream, but it will always promise to give life to the dreams of young men. Whether these current Dragons
end up on Wall Street or protecting your street does not matter; they will certainly land
in both places. What does matter is they are destined to be true sons of Mary,
continuing the lasting legacy of Southside Catholic/St. Mary’s High School.
We cannot do this without your sacrifice. It is no longer enough to offer
support; each one of us must give whatever we can to sustain this most
important mission. Thank you for everything you have done to make it
possible. You are, indeed, in our prayer every day. God bless you.

a message from the principal
Dear Community of St. Mary’s High School,
As we approach the 2013-2014 school year I would like to acknowledge the work of several educators in
furthering the Mission of St. Mary’s High School.
In May, Valerie Todd received the Cardinal Raymond L. Burke Teacher Recognition Award. This award recognizes
educators at the primary and secondary levels for their contributions to education. For years Valerie has headed
the Learning Differences program at our school. She has assisted students and also our faculty who in turn
then provide instructional assistance so that all of our students will succeed. Congratulations to Valerie for her
commitment to education and for receiving this prestigious award.
I would also like to thank Jake Parent, Herbert Erwin and Charlie Harris who left St. Mary’s after the 20122013 school year, for their years of service. At the conclusion of the 2012-2013 school year, Andrea Dierkes,
the manager of our cafeteria retired. Many thanks to Andrea for her work. I would also like to welcome two
new faculty members; Mr. Matthew Dirnbeck will be teaching science and Mr. Jim Hubbman who will be
teaching religion.
Several weeks ago all of you were notified that this year will be the final year of service at St. Mary’s for Rev. Mitch
Doyen. Fr. Doyen will join a growing number of former administrators who made a difference in the lives of our
students. During Fr. Mitch’s time we have been able to strengthen our collaboration with the Marianist Province.
He has become part of our Lay Marianist group and he has joined our students in working
the Marianist LIFE camp. Fr. Doyen also created the Nathaniel’s Journey
program at St. Mary’s. This program assists freshmen in their transition into
high school. During Fr. Mitch’s time he has always been generous with
his time. Often he would drive many miles to attend a playoff game in
support of our student athletes. One of Fr. Mitch’s greatest challenges
and later successes was the baseball field project. This project provided
one of the finest baseball fields in the St. Louis area for our athletes and
it also provided a practice facility for several of our soccer teams.
The Archdiocesan Catholic Education Office has already begun a
search for our next President. As we look to the future we also look,
with gratitude, at the accomplishments of another administrator
who has continued to move our Mission forward. Many thanks to you,
Fr. Mitch Doyen!

This summer, we have completed several campus projects. The parking lot has been patched, resealed,
and striped. Some of the HVAC in the gymnasium have been replaced. HVAC will also be added to three
additional classrooms. Significant additions will also be made to the exterior and interior security cameras.
During the next school year, our freshmen will begin using Chrome Books in their classes. The use of
Chrome Books and Google Docs helps us to provide affordable technology for our students. This effort will
be directed by our Technology Coordinator, Mr. Alex DeMatteis.
Last January I began serving on the Board of the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals,
representing the non-public schools. In just a short period of time, I have met a great number of dedicated
educators. It is my hope that I can bring what other schools are doing as best practices to St. Mary’s. I
also will attend the Bearing Witness program in Washington, D.C. in July. This program is sponsored by
the ACLU, Anti-Defamation League, the National Catholic Education Association, and the Eileen Ludwig
Greenland Foundation. The purpose of this institute is to provide educators with resources and teaching
strategies to teach about topics on Anti-Semitism. I will be anxious to share with my students and colleagues
what I learn at the institute.
In the last few months, I have been able to attend several informal get togethers and reunions. It is always
great to share what is happening at our school with our alumni (class of ’62, ’63, ’98). I am always grateful
for the support that our alumni give to their Alma Mater.
To all of our parents and alumni, I extend my thanks for your support as we continue the Mission of Catholic
Education on the South Side.

a message from the associate principal
Dear Parents, Alums and Friends of St. Mary’s,
The St. Mary’s vision statement includes one of my favorite lines - “Each student is seen as a child of God
with gifts that will be called forth.” It’s the “calling forth” part that seems to get a bit more tricky each year
as we move further into the 21st century. According to educator and author Kirsten Olson, “we know
student potential is like an iceberg - most of it is obscured from view - but we also know that high trust, high
expectations, and a high support environment will reveal in time what is hidden.”
Educational research tells us that students will not only need knowledge in core areas but in order to be
well prepared for college and life, they will need to develop strong skills in collaboration, communication,
creativity, critical thinking and technology literacy. As educators we need to hone our skills in these areas
too. Our students approach their everyday lives differently because of the technologies available to them. We
cannot separate that truth from their school experience.
For over a decade, we have embraced the research on the best ways to prepare young men for the future.
We have worked hard to use the most current information in the field of educational neuroscience to design
a rigorous and relevant curriculum and create meaningful learning experiences and programs. The feature
story of this Clarion issue gives you a glimpse of what that has looked like. It has been an exciting journey!
Our commitment to be qualified educators who are well-informed in
current teaching and learning practices has not gone unrewarded.
Each year we see more of our students setting serious academic
and career goals, succeeding in college credit courses,
improving their organizational and decision making skills,
choosing to serve their community in unique ways and best
of all seeing themselves as children of God being “called
forth” to not only know and celebrate their own gifts, but are
willing and ready to use them to witness Jesus Christ to the
world. What could be more important? How lucky we are
to be a part of it all!

a message from the chairman
of the board of directors
Principal Kevin Hacker has a great interest in the US Military. He was responsible for having a monument created
for our fallen Dragons. Kevin’s interest in the military has helped me reflect on the status of St. Mary’s.
During World War II the US had superior numbers, more “boots on the ground”. In 1970, St. Mary’s had over a
thousand students. Times change. The US Military has fewer “boots on the ground”, but the troops are just as
effective because of specialized training and modern equipment. St. Mary’s is similar. We have fewer “boots on
the ground”, but we are accomplishing our mission just the same.
The graduating class of 2013 was one of our smallest, yet they achieved great success. Thanks to our
administration and faculty, our 2013 Dragons, steeped in the Marian Charism and the Dragon tradition, have
accomplished wondrous deeds!
This senior class advanced to the semi finals of the State tournament in football; won the sectionals in baseball;
and received over one million dollars in first year scholarships.
Congratulations to the Class of 2013 for carrying on our great South Side tradition.
Remember that the Class of 2013’s achievements could not have happened without the support of alumni and
benefactors. To maintain this success, we need your help. Stand up! Put your “boots on the ground”, and support
our Alma Mater!

Founded in 1931, rich in Marianist tradition, St. Mary’s High School has always provided an integral, quality
education. Students have been encouraged to explore their minds and grow not only academically but
personally, spiritually and athletically. Among our more than 13,000 graduates are CEO’s, lawyers, doctors,
engineers, entrepreneurs, professional ballplayers, teachers, volunteers and above all, family men committed
to the betterment of their communities.
However, in the last several years, St. Mary’s has undergone somewhat of an academic renaissance, taking
academics to a whole new level. As a matter of fact, St. Mary’s is becoming viewed by national education
leaders as a model school implementing best practices in professional development. Many teachers
and educators from the city, state and beyond have come to observe our teachers in action.
Several of our teachers have been featured in nationally recognized education books regarding
how they have implemented high yield strategies resulting in gains in achievement.
So how has St. Mary’s High School done this? Beginning in 2000, St. Mary’s focus became
translating the current brain research on the male adolescent brain and incorporating a
differentiated approach to instruction to reach and teach every student that enters their doors.
ST. MARY’S ANSWER TO THE CURRENT RESEARCH ON
BRAIN COMPATIBLE TEACHING AND LEARNING
One of the first things faculty and staff did that began the academic renaissance was to
read Michael Gurian’s book Boys and Girls Learn Differently. What they found is that there
are specific strategies teachers can use to help young men learn.
Young men need experiential learning opportunities: Faculty and staff began looking
for opportunities to connect learning to the real world. The administration expanded
the Curriculum to offer more hands-on electives such as AC/DC Electricity, Robotics,
Graphic Design, Architectural Design, Multimedia and Computer Programming.
Teachers incorporate Video conferencing and other 21st Century Technology into
their classrooms. Field Trips to such places as the St. Louis Art Museum, the
Frank Lloyd Wright Kraus House, Powell Hall, the St. Louis Repertory Theater
allow students to learn beyond the classroom. Partnerships with Missouri Botanical
Gardens, Abbot Ambulance, and Innovative Energy Inc. allow students to gain real
world learning experiences. Finally, this past year, an Internship Program for juniors
was added to the curriculum to assist students with a more accurate potential career
path in answer to the rising cost of post-secondary schooling.
Young men need to move to learn: St. Mary’s teachers get students moving in and
out of a variety of groupings during class, emphasize the development of projects and
presentations and actively engage students by questioning and sharing ideas.
Young men need spatial-visual representations when becoming better readers and
writers: St. Mary’s teachers use non-verbal learning tools such as graphic organizers, charts
and diagrams; video imaging and Inspiration software; and incorporate films, role plays, interviews and
demonstrations. In addition, The Reading Plus Program® was added in 2010 to offer students opportunities
to become faster more efficient readers.

Young men sometimes need help with homework and organization: St. Mary’s provides so many
opportunities for boys to get extra help outside the classroom. A 1 hour Academic Lab was added in 2012 in
which 4 days a week students have time during the school day to work on homework and meet 1 on 1 with
teachers. Free tutoring and quiet study time is available 1 hour before and after school every day. St. Mary’s
Rotating Block Schedule is key to our student’s success. The schedule gives students an extra day to work
on homework and the opportunity to practice Math, English and Science the entire school year. Finally, many
teachers incorporate Interactive Notebooks in their classes.
Young men need to read and write on interesting “boy” topics: St.
Mary’s teachers provide choices in reading that match students’
interest and aptitude with an emphasis on heroism, competition
and adventure.
Male brains tend to compartmentalize learning:
St. Mary’s teachers always start with the “big picture”
first when teaching major concepts. Teachers
align instruction with daily learning goals derived
from specific curriculum standards. Students are
pointed to that goal throughout the lesson so
they can assess their own progress in mastering
the content and skills being taught.
The learning needs of young men include
understanding that their own emotional lives
and a sense of belonging impact academic
success: Faculty and staff know that our young
men come from many different types of family
situations and backgrounds. We know that students
cannot learn if their emotional lives are in turmoil and/
or they do not feel as if they belong. St. Mary’s offers
over 30 leadership and club opportunities that celebrate
the spirit of being a Dragon, 13 athletic teams with a no
cut freshmen rule, Spirit Week, an annual 3 on 3 Tournament
and other student events that encourage bonding. In addition,
St. Mary’s has a weekly CARE Team in which guidance, deans and
the leadership team meet to discuss how to help struggling students.
Our Freshmen Transition Program, Nathaniel’s Journey, was launched
in 2006. This initiative includes a Summer Bridge Program designed
to assist incoming freshmen with sharpening skills and transitioning to
high school, opportunities to bond with their classmates (i.e. Lunch
with the President, Ropes and Rituals, Field Trips), check-ins with their
male role models and opportunities to spend time with their dads. It
also includes a specific Student Orientation, and an Academics and
Responsibility (SOAR) class which helps students learn about St.
Mary’s, what it takes to succeed in high school and what it means
to be a Dragon.

NOT JUST BOYS BRAINS, BUT UNIQUE BRAINS
St. Mary’s knew that implementing all these strategies in answer to the brain research was just one step in
helping our young men succeed. However, our faculty and staff were well aware that not only do boys learn
differently than girls, but every young man has a unique brain that learns differently as well. So in addition
to the strategies above, St. Mary’s teachers have begun using a differentiated approach to instruction so
that every student, whether he is a Bright Flight Scholar or has an IEP, is being challenged and working to
their potential. As a result, St. Mary’s hallways are filled with young men who are not only diverse in their
backgrounds but in their academic abilities as well.
For our academically gifted students, we offer 49 hours of college credit and honors courses at every level.
The use of the Acellus Learning Program helps teachers further differentiate instruction by interest while
accelerating and supplementing learning. Students have the opportunity to be inducted into several honor
societies including Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Chi Pi and the National Honor Society. For students who may
struggle academically or have learning difficulties, St. Mary’s has a Learning Consultant Program, the first in
the St. Louis area, and one that has been replicated throughout the region. St. Mary’s has a reputation of
helping students who have often struggled in school to thrive.
DEVELOPING MASTER TEACHERS
When St. Mary’s administration began this academic renaissance, they knew that the amount and quality of
professional development most teachers in the Archdiocese were required to stay certified was not sufficient
in making good teachers great, developing master teachers and essentially creating change in the classroom
to increase student achievement. So in 2006, St. Mary’s faculty began collaborating in professional learning
teams to improve instruction and student performance. St. Mary’s carved out 2 hours every week for faculty
members to engage in ongoing professional development. These teams of faculty members follow a specific
protocol that begins with a professional reading, then examining peer lesson/unit plans and ending with
receiving or giving specific feedback that moves a good lesson/unit to a great one.
St. Mary’s took professional development a step further in 2009 by collaborating with Dr. Jane E. Pollock,
a nationally recognized consultant who specializes in curriculum and instruction. She has co authored
Dimensions of Learning Teacher and Training Manuals (1996), Assessment, Grading and Record Keeping
(1999) and Classroom Instruction That Works (2000). Her own works include Improving Student Learning
One Teacher at a Time (2007) and Improving Student Learning One Principal at a Time (2009). Dr. Pollock
is a member of ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) and an adjunct faculty
member at various universities.
Several of our teachers who have implemented high-yield strategies resulting in gains in achievement are
now featured in her books. Spanish and Health teacher, Jenn Sykora, is featured in Minding the Achievement
Gap One Classroom at a Time, regarding Interactive Notebooks. She is the Educator’s Voice in Chapter 3
- Students at Risk: Increasing Engagement Through Intentional Teaching. Freshmen teacher and Guidance
Counselor, Alex DeMatteis is also noted in this book as an example of a teacher using the Access Prior
Knowledge part of lesson design in a unique and effective way. Math teacher, Pat Carosello, is featured in
Feedback: The Hinge that Joins Teaching and Learning, regarding increasing formative assessment in class.
Social Studies teacher Kenn Buechter and English teacher Michelle Klimpel are featured in i5: Teaching
educating young men
Innovation (not out yet) regarding focusing on curriculum and goals setting. Finally, Jenn Sykora co-presented
a national webinar on Interactive Notebooks with Dr. Pollock in September, 2012.
In the last few years, teachers and administrators from several schools in the St. Louis area have visited St.
Mary’s campus to observe our teachers in hopes of replicating their success. In October 2010 during St. Mary’s
Accreditation Review visit, the Quality Assurance Review team commended St. Mary’s on their professional
development for teaching and learning stating, there is “evident commitment to continuous improvement,
persistence in implementing new methods and approaches...to meet students’ ever-evolving needs and
interests.” One QAR team member commented, “I’ve only seen PLT’s done this way in training videos!”
PAVING THE WAY
Beginning with an idea, St. Mary’s High School has created an educational environment that challenges
students, teachers and administrators to continue learning, creating and expanding their minds. With the
support of our dedicated alumni who donate millions of dollars a year in tuition assistance, the community,
parents and friends, St. Mary’s High School continues to pave the way toward a bright future.

• Art Teacher Melissa Greer was chosen to
attend a National Conference for Art Educators
in 2011 and was 1 of only 15 area artists chosen
to be a part of 2011’s “Off the Wall Holiday Ball”
art show here in St. Louis.
• English and Global Studies Teacher Michelle
Klimpel received the 2012 Emerson Excellence
in Teaching Award. Only 93 educators in the

that would be currently characterized as “best

Shadow Program
Would you like to experience
St. Mary’s excellent academics,
small school opportunities and
family atmosphere? Schedule
your shadow today!
This half day program begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends
at 12:00 p.m. The shadow program is available on
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Transfer students
and 8th grade students are welcome year round.
Seventh grade students are welcome mid-January
through April. Contact the Admissions Director at

The St. Mary’s Parent Association
(SMPA) is devoted to supporting the
efforts of the leaders and teachers of
Saint Mary’s High School. All parents
are part of the SMPA even if you
have not attended a single meeting.
The formal purpose outlined in our bylaws state
the SMPA’s function is “To gain knowledge, insight,
understanding and continuous development of the St.
Mary’s High School.” Over the last two years, we also
added a goal to educate interested parents regarding
the Marianist Charism which is so fundamental to the
St. Mary’s high school experience. As a group, the
SMPA organize and coordinate social events ranging
from the Mother-Son dance, Father-Son breakfast

St. Joseph’s Chapel has officially been renamed Holy Family Chapel. The Chapel, which was erected in 1936, was
renovated from June of 1998 to 2002. When St. Mary’s acquired the Chapel in 1998, the windows were broken,
walls knocked in and there was no heating or cooling system. Today it stands beautifully on the St. Mary’s campus.

On April 24th, 2013, four St. Mary’s High School
students were honored with the Board of Directors
Award. This award, in its fourth year, is given to
students who exemplify outstanding behavior or
service to St. Mary’s High School and the community
at large and is intended to increase public awareness
of the achievements of our students. The students are
nominated by faculty and staff. Congratulations to the
recipients of the 2013 Board of Directors Award.

dragons on fire at scholar bowl
Mary’s has added a Scholar Bowl team.
St. Mary’s students have shown they
are not only competitive in sports, but
this year, they added academics to that
list. Math students have competed and
done very well in the Archdiocesan math
contests over the years, but this year St.
Interested students began meeting
after school on Tuesdays starting
in December to practice answering
questions in all subject areas. On
January 26th, they were thrown into
their first Scholar Bowl held at Lutheran
St. Charles against other schools in
the conference. Three seniors: Todd
Lombardi, Dan Murdick and Peter
Wolf, and two sophomores: Troy Kohne
and TJ Poe, proudly represented
St. Mary’s. They jumped right in without
having a chance to practice with buzzers
and time limits and gave the other teams
a challenge. Congratulations to Senior,
Peter Wolf, who won a spot on the alltournament team by ranking 6th overall
in points scored on correct answers.
St. Mary’s has a bright future for the

talented, interested students ready
to compete for the next couple years.

instrumental music at st. mary’s high school
David K. Meador is the band director at St. Mary’s High
School. His first year in this position was 2012-2013. Much
time has been spent in the process of re-structuring and reestablishing the program. Structure and consistency were
emphasized. Students became responsible to improve on
their given instruments through daily warm ups, scale studies,
technical routines and chorales. They learned to participate
in a dedicated fashion towards the instrumental program as
a whole.
A Pep Band was established to participate at school assemblies, home football and basketball games. The Varsity
Band, which has been renamed the Concert Band, presented several concerts throughout the year including a
winter concert, a spring concert, grandparents days and graduation. The concert band also received a Superior
Division I rating at the Archdiocese Music Festival. Students were also given the opportunity to audition for the
District 8 Metro Band and participate with the St. Louis Solo and Ensemble Festival.
An awards system for high school band was established and incorporated within the instrumental music system this
past year, which now allows students to letter in band if they meet proper criteria.
The St. Mary’s Alumni donated $10,000 towards the band program at St. Mary’s High School. Through these
monies the program has or will obtain a new concert tuba, two euphoniums, a flugelhorn, a thirty-two inch timpani,
a marimba, a xylophone and stand racks.
We feel that we have set a basis for a program, that if maintained and allowed to continue to grow, is one that any
instrumental student would want to be a member of, and one that represents St. Mary’s proudly.

Achievement for Excellence
in Science Award from

College. It recognizes the most
outstanding junior science students in the St. Louis
metro area high schools. Criteria for nominees include
involvement in individual research investigations,

extra-curricular
activities

organizations, previous science awards, and math
and science grade point average. Only 24 other juniors
received the award with Chris.

DeMarcus received a Certificate of Leadership from
ITEF and the committee was impressed by “the
many things he has already accomplished including
his outstanding academic success, his service as
Vice President of Student Council and his desire to
become an English teacher.”

It is a statewide award that
honors 100 of Missouri’s top
academic students in the 2013
graduating class. To meet the
requirements, students had to have a minimum GPA
of 3.750, a minimum ACT score of 29 or SAT score
of 1900, be ranked in the upper ten percent of the
class, and taken upper level courses in mathematics,
science, English, and foreign language. The students
had to have excellent attendance and be involved in the
school activity program. This is a prestigious award and
another proud moment for the St. Mary’s community.

St. Mary’s participated in the Archdiocesan Math
Contest at Kennedy High School on Tuesday, March
12th. Congratulations to Senior Todd Lombardi
and Sophomores John Kovarik and TJ Poe who
all received awards. TJ Poe placed first among all
sophomores from the 6 schools attending!
Congratulations to St. Mary’s seniors Kevin Hennessy and Brandon
Polito. They each received a $10,000 Scholarship from the Carondelet
Sunday Morning Athletic Club’s Educational Scholarship Endowment
for their academic and athletic success as well as their community
service. They were two of only six recipients to receive the scholarship!

Empty Bowls Project 2013
2013 Junior Service Projects
Congratulations to St. Mary’s juniors who have
completed their Junior Service Projects. To graduate
from St. Mary’s High School, each student must
participate in a Junior Service Project. This project
consists of two weeks of service starting the week of
Spring Break. Students can decide to serve in the St.
Louis area or participate in an Immersion Trip. Students
who stay in St. Louis volunteer in area hospitals, day
care centers, homeless shelters, nursing homes and
other places of need. Students who participate in
Immersion Trips serve people all over the world.
This year 11 juniors traveled to Appalachia and 7
traveled to San Antonio. The remaining juniors served
at 26 different service locations throughout the St.
Louis area.
St. Mary’s sold bowls made for the Empty Bowls
Project. Empty Bowls is an international grassroots
effort to fight hunger. The basic premise is simple:
Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others
work with the community to create handcrafted
bowls. Guests are invited to purchase their work in
exchange for a cash donation. The money raised is
donated to an organization working to end hunger
and food insecurity. St. Mary’s chose our local
chapter of “Operation Backpack.” This organization
puts together backpacks for children that do not
have enough food at home to make it through the
weekend. They rely heavily on lunch served at school
during the week and this program provides them with
food at home. St. Mary’s made about 100 bowls to
support this cause to end hunger.

Godefroid left for Washington, DC
on Wednesday, January 23 at about
4:00 PM. After driving all night
through a snow storm they arrived in
Arlington, VA at their motel at about
1:00 EST on Thursday (20 hour trip).
After checking into the motel, the
group went sightseeing to Arlington
Cemetery and the Smithsonian. On
Thursday night they attended Mass
at the Immaculate Conception
Shrine. They celebrated Mass with
hundreds of priests, seminarians
and nearly 5,000 (mostly young
people) worshipers. On Friday they
toured the Washington Mall (Lincoln
Memorial, Vietnam Wall, White
House, Ford Theater, Archives). At
1:00 PM they joined with 500,000
others for the Pro-Life march up
Capitol Hill and past the Supreme
Court building. They returned to
the motel after eating dinner in the
Pentagon City Mall. On Saturday
they left the motel at about 7:30 EST
and arrived at St. Mary’s around
8:30 on Saturday evening.
St. Mary’s left with 6 young men and
returned with 6 tired, but hopefully,
inspired young men.

Tom Lombardo Chapter
has quickly become a
driving force throughout
the St. Louis football community. Founded in 1992,
the chapter impacts thousands of high school, middle
school and grade school kids with a myriad of programs
that successfully carry out the mission of the National
Football Foundation.
St. Mary’s High School was named as one of two Top
High School Programs for 2012. Senior Brandon Polito
was named a Scholar Athlete, the first in St. Mary’s
history and the only Catholic High School player named.
And finally, Coach Jake Parent was recognized for his
work with the Jimmy Conzelman Coach of the Year.
They were recognized on Sunday, May 5th at Orlando
Gardens.
Congratulations to Brandon, Coach Parent and the
entire football team, whose hard work on the football
field was matched by their hard work in the classroom
and community.
Every year, the St. Louis Chapter honors
about a dozen football players from
the entire St. Louis Metropolitan area
as Scholar Athletes. These young men
must maintain a 3.0 GPA, be active in
the community and excel on the football
field to receive this honor and the $1,000
scholarship. In addition, the Chapter
recognizes the Top High School Programs
and names a Coach of the Year, among
other awards.

baseball wrap-up
The Dragon’s finished the season 16-11 as they made
a run at a State Title. After starting slow they caught
fire in conference play, and captured the conference
title for the first time in 10 years. The Dragon’s weren’t
finished, hosting the District playoff’s this year they
entered as the number 1 seed and came out as District
Champs, also for the first time in 10 years. Moving
on in the State Playoff’s they then took on Clayton
HS in Sectionals winning in an epic pitching dual. This
victory too was as far as the Dragon’s have made it in
the State Playoff’s in over 10 years.
The team traveled to Booneville, Missouri to play in the
Quarterfinals, dropping a hard fought game against
Booneville HS one game away from the State final
four.
The Dragon’s ended the season ranked 10th in the
State in small school rankings. Senior Adam Bieber
was named Conference Player of the Year, along with a
first team selection as a pitcher. Seniors Michael Lamb
and Kevin Hennessy, along with Junior Matt Causino
were also first team\all-conference selections. Senior
Justin Nienhaus and Junior Lorenzo Garcia were
named to the second team all-conference list. First
year coach, Joseph Simokaitis was named Coach of
the Year in the conference.
basketball wrap-up
The basketball Dragons season ended in the district
championship loss to the number one seeded Jaguars
from Gateway Tech. St. Mary’s finished the season
with a record of 13-14.
Junior Josh Robinson was one of the leading scorers in
the area with a 25.4 average points per game. Josh was
selected first team all-conference and recognized by the
conference coaches as the offensive player of the year.
St. Mary’s is returning 94% of its scoring, Coach
Perniciaro and the coaching staff are looking forward
to the six Juniors returning to compete in their Senior
season.
Coach Perniciaro would like to thank Coach Andy
Vogel for his hard work and passion to the basketball
program. Coach has been an important part of
St. Mary’s as a “C”, “B”, and Varsity assistant. Jim
Sievers and former St. Mary’s head coach Ed Stewart
will coach the “B” team. Coach Stewart will also work
with Coach Gregg Fingerhut and Coach Perniciaro
with the Varsity.
The season tips off with the Southside Classic being
played at St. Mary’s on Monday, December 2nd. Please

tennis wrap-up
and in 1 of our rainouts, we were leading 4-2 when the
match was washed out. But in Districts, the Dragons
defeated Lutheran South 5-0. The Dragons had to play
St. Pius X, who were undefeated at 13-0 and the #1
seed. The Dragons upset them by a score of 5-3. Then
the Dragons played the Windsor Owls for the District
Championship and lost 4-5 again, but played very well.
In the Individual Districts, Senior Matt Smith, playing 11
sets in 9 hours finished in 4th place, winning his first 2
matches in 3 sets. The Doubles team of Sophomores Isaac
Julius & Eric Clancy finished in 2nd place and advanced to
sectionals where they lost in 2 well played sets.
Senior Chris Morris, who played 1st singles, received
a scholarship to play Tennis at Webster University and
Seniors, Jordan Champion & Jeremy Kamper had
strong seasons.
The tennis team had a strong end of season. Going into
district play, the Dragons had gone 1-9 with 2 rainouts.
Of these 9 losses, 5 of them were by a score of 4-5

in 2014 with Eric Clancy & Isaac Julius returning along
with experienced varsity players Matt O’Neil and Tim
Kroger. The team will be helped by junior varsity players,
freshmen Craig Polette, Josiah Ellis, Ian Comerford and
Jesus Sallomon.
track & field wrap-up
St. Mary’s Track and Field had another successful year which was topped off by Senior
Conor Cashner qualifying for the Missouri State Track and Field Championships in
the 1600 meter run. Senior DJ De Vivo’s chance at qualifying for the State Meet was
cut short due to an ankle injury after winning a District Title in the Long Jump. These
two seniors led a very young Dragons team both on and off the track.
Other point contributors throughout the year were Juniors Greg Albers, Jake Lyles
and Cormac Cashner. Our major Sophomore contributors were Chris Leisure,
Adam Wever, Jared Pudlowski, Quinn Wilson, Noah Wagner and Doug Melgara.
Sophomore Will Pratt sat out the last half of the year due to injury, and would have
been a big part of the team if healthy.
This Sophomore group was able to win the AAA Conference Championships with
plenty of breathing room, so expectations moving forward are high as we look
forward to this strong group of runners returning next spring.

wrestling wrap-up
Last year’s wrestling season brought forth many accomplishments. The varsity team finished with its third consecutive
winning record, brought home a consolation championship plaque from the U-City Classic, and qualified for the
State tournament at Mizzou Arena. Peter Weingart ‘13 represented St. Mary’s by qualifying for the State tournament
for his third time.
Perhaps the biggest accomplishment for the wrestling program was completing it’s 4th year. What this really means
is that we graduated our first wave of Dragons through 4 years of wrestling. These graduates include Charlie Coghill,
Tim Grosch, Brandon Polito, Richie Wayne, and Peter Weingart. We congratulate this group of five men and are
proud of them, not for only accepting but embracing the challenge of wrestling, which has given them many skills
for their future. Look for the Dragons this winter season and consider coming to a home meet.

hope to see our fan base grow in the years to come.

It’s a Whole New Backyard

Fourth of July for many over here is usually spent back
home with their closest friends and family. Some go for
weekends at a nearby lake house. Some go to a family
member’s house for a back yard cook out, wiffle ball
and cold drinks. The night always ends perfectly with a
firework show that
you can see from
any backyard in
the neighborhood.
Some spend it
going with their
significant
other
down town to a
nearby city enjoying
the festivities and a
professional show
put on, that lights
up the city skyline.
But this year was
a little different for
the soldiers of 2nd
platoon. For us
here on RCP 68 it
was just another
day on the road
doing our job as we have day in and day out. But as it
was for me I’m sure it was the same for others, there was
still a little bit of holiday spirit in the back our minds as
we headed down the road. This year Fourth of July had
a little bit of a different feeling, a feeling of patriotism, and
a sense of pride that this year we were directly impacting
our families back home. This year we celebrated in a
completely different manner. We celebrated by executing
our mission to the best of our ability.
As I looked around
after getting off the
road I saw many
guys gathered in
groups reminiscing
about past holidays
and ones still to
come. Some were
telling funny stories
about a firework
show gone wrong,
or about times
spent with their
loved ones. This
Fourth of July I’m
sure will forever be
remembered
by
most; of a holiday
spent with a new
family, the Soldiers
of 2nd platoon. This year, as we lay down on our cots as
we all have many times before, there was a feeling as if
we could almost still see the fireworks back home.

As I begin my third year at St. Mary’s as Director of Constituent
Relations, I am excited to expand much of our alumni
programming. St. Mary’s Advancement Office’s goal is to
work with alumni in conjunction with the St. Mary’s Alumni
Association to connect them with the school to provide fun
and meaningful experiences. Some goals for the year:
•Increase the number of class reunions
•Expand our Alumni Business Highlights and Alumni News and Notes
•Enhance annual alumni events such as the Golf Tournament,
Trivia Night, Poker Night and Champions Night
•Strengthen alumni relationships with current students through
school pro-gramming events such as Career Exploration Day and
the Junior Experiential Career Internship Program (see below)
•Improve communication via Facebook, Twitter and Youtube
•Build Up membership of the Alumni Association
There are so many ways to get involved with your alma mater that
can be fun, re-warding and meaningful. If you know a Dragon who
is no longer involved with the school, invite them to participate
in some of our events throughout the year. They will wonder
why they ever left.

1963 – The Class of 1963 has set up a memorial fund for Tim Divis to purchase a brick in his
name. The contact person is Dan Trokey at 314-677-9083.
1970 – Denny Vaninger, Class of 1970, was recently featured in the St. Louis Post
Dispatch for his work in youth soccer. A member of St. Mary’s state championship
team in 1970, Vaninger won a U.S. Amateur Cup (1971), competed for the U.S.
national team and played 10 seasons of professional soccer. He scored 71
goals in five seasons with the St. Louis Stars (1973-77). He is currently in his
12th year as director of coaching and education for the Missouri Youth Soccer
Association. Vaninger and MYSA have created a coaching certification program in which applicants must attend an
instructional clinic. The three-hour seminar is applicable to all levels and especially appropriate for coaching kids 11
years and younger. It teaches coaches how kids learn and stay motivated so that soccer is fun!

2004 – Officer Kevin Baroni ‘04 has
been selected Fourth District “Officer
of the Year” by his peers. This past
year he made several arrests for
drug, weapons and other violations.
He was named “Officer of the
Month” for the months of July and
December. In 2012 Officer Baroni made 63 Felony
Arrests, handled 1900 radio assignments and wrote
151 reports. He has been the recipient of “Officer of
the Month” Award 3 times and has received Seven
Captains letters. Congratulations Kevin and thanks for
proudly serving our city!

Saturday, April 13th was a great night! Alumni, Parents,
Teachers and Friends of St. Mary’s gathered for our
biggest fundraiser of the year. Tom Schueck and Greg
Divis Sr, both Class of 1958 were honored for their
commitment to preserving the legacy of St. Mary’s
High School. Thank you to everyone who attended
and made it such a great success.
Champions Night
This event began
in 2009 and takes
place every other
year on St. Mary’s
Homecoming weekend. St. Mary’s
invites all alumni back to campus
to celebrate some of our greatest
Dragons for their success on and
off the playing field. The next
Champions Night will take place on
October 18th, 2013.
BUDDY BASS TOURNAMENT
On a sunny morning May 18th, 41 boats set sail
at the Lake of the Ozarks to catch “the big one.”
After the weigh-in, all the fishermen were treated to
a gourmet BBQ by Kenn Buechter, Mark Hacker
and Kenn’s brother Darnell. This was the Buddy
Bass Tournament’s 10th year. Special thanks to Red
Oak Resort (Jerry Reinhold ‘74) for their hospitality and to
the tournament organizers for all 10 years–Mike Lowe ‘73,
Dave Weindel ’68 and Chris Lowe ’83. We hope to see
you May 17th, 2014.
Christmas Party
This annual event
takes place in the
St. Mary’s cafeteria.
All
paid
members of the Alumni Association
are welcome. You can sign up to
be a member that evening. The
2013 Alumni Christmas Party is
December 5th, 2013.

This annual event takes place in the
St. Mary’s cafeteria and includes food
and drink. The next Texas Hold’Em
Tournament is December 7th, 2013.

Alumni Trivia Night
This annual event
began in 2007
and takes place
on campus. The
evening includes
snacks, drinks, ten rounds of trivia,
a 50/50 raffle, attendance and cash
prizes. Organizers: Mike Lowe ’73
and Dave Weindel ’68. The 2014
Trivia Night is January 25th, 2014.
