As much as we know that we only live once, it is often difficult to live every moment to the full and enjoy
the many things that we would like to… The gentle winding down at the end of the day, a sunset on the
beach or watching the sun rise over the golf course. It is these moments that we know we want to cherish
forever. And it is this feeling that joins the countless people who choose to buy a second home here in the
resort. “Vale do Lobo is not just a resort, but a place with real heart and soul,” is a comment that is often
shared with me. It’s also a feeling I share as I approach ten years of working here in this truly special place,
and I hope that as you turn every page you too will feel the magic of the many things we offer here.

Por mais que saibamos que se vive uma só vez, dificilmente conseguimos saborear a vida
em toda a sua plenitude; essa intensidade que chega com o terminar dos dias, com o pôr-do-sol na
praia ou com o amanhececer no campo de golfe. Um dia, porém, percebemos que são precisamente
esses momentos que queremos manter para sempre. Este é o sentimento comum a muitos daqueles
que um dia escolheram Vale do Lobo para viver ou ter uma segunda casa: “Vale do Lobo sente-se, tem alma, não é somente um resort”, partilham comigo muitas vezes. É um pouco desse
sentimento e sensação tão familiar que, no ano em que também eu partilho com este local mágico,

Diogo Gaspar Ferreira
Diogo Gaspar Ferreira has been the Chief Executive
Officer of Vale do Lobo Algarve for the past three
years and is a member of Portugal’s business and
social communities. This challenging role at the
helm of the resort is balanced with his presidency
of CNIG (Portuguese Golf Industry Association) and
an active role in a number of clubs and associations,
such as ULI (International Real Estate organization)
where he is Member of the European Resort Board.
His passion and commitment to Vale do Lobo continues to fuel the various improvements and developments ongoing within the resort and here he
gives Living magazine an insight into the resort position as a luxury tourism provider in Europe.
How would you say that the Algarve and indeed
Portugal as a whole sit in the current world tourism climate and have there been any significant
changes so far in comparison with the economic
difficulties of 2009?
The end of 2008/9 saw a deep change in peoples’
attitudes to spending both in Europe and the USA.
What we are witnessing is a change in the levels of
investment and personal spending, so whereas people are continuing to play golf, to travel and to buy
a second home, this is now much more proportionate with income levels. This situation sees a sharp
contrast to the last five years, during which access
to credit was far easier, in turn leading to numerous
cases of uncontrolled debt. Today, however, we are
seeing a much greater balance between consumer
income and expenditure in all market areas and
particularly visible in the real estate sector.
I think this is one of the main changes to come
out of the crisis that hit in 2008 and 2009 and it will
continue to play a huge role over the coming years.
You could say that the market and trend have circled
back round to the habits of the 90s - a time when
people had no expectations but spent in accordance with their means. I think that Portugal and
other European countries, in particular the south of
France, Italy and Spain are dealing with this movement in trend and adapting to new market needs.
Despite changes in consumer patterns, I am still
very optimistic over the future of the Algarve as a
whole and of course Vale do Lobo as a consolidated
resort that offers an advantage over places such as
Dubai where expectation has always been too high
and prices continue to grow yet purchases are on
hold due to the crisis. You have to be realistic and
accommodate to the spending capacity of your clients and I think we are adapting to that.

que desempenha desde há três anos e que conjuga
com a presidência do CNIG (Conselho Nacional da
Indústria do Golfe) e uma participação activa em
diversos clubes e associações, tais como no Urban
Land Institute, onde integra o Conselho Europeu de
Resorts. A sua paixão e compromisso para com Vale
do Lobo continua a reflectir-se nas várias melhorias
e desenvolvimentos em curso, partilhando aqui, em
entrevista à revista Living, a sua visão sobre o papel
do resort, como um dos mais importantes destinos
turísticos de luxo na Europa.
Como classifica o Algarve e Portugal no panorama
turístico internacional e quais são as alterações
mais significativas até ao momento, em comparação com as dificuldades económicas de 2009?
Os anos de 2008/2009 registaram uma profunda alteração nos hábitos de consumo, tanto na
Europa, como nos E.U.A. O que temos vindo a verificar é uma mudança nos níveis de investimento e
nos gastos pessoais. Embora as pessoas continuem a
jogar golfe, a viajar e a comprar uma segunda residência, estes são agora muito mais proporcionais
aos seus rendimentos. Esta situação contrasta com a
realidade dos últimos cinco anos, durante os quais
o acesso ao crédito era muito facilitado, levando a
situações de endividamento. Existe hoje uma consciencialização de que o consumo deve estar mais
relacionado com o rendimento do indivíduo e não
exclusivamente com o património dos consumidores, especialmente o imobiliário.
Considero que esta é, de facto, uma das consequências mais significativas da crise dos anos de
2008 e 2009 e que ainda se fará sentir por mais
algum tempo. Poderemos mesmo afirmar que a
tendência do mercado replica agora os hábitos dos
anos 90 – uma época em que as pessoas gastavam
de acordo com suas possibilidades. Portugal, tal
como outros países europeus, em particular o sul
da França, Itália e Espanha, estão a reagir a essa
evolução socio-económica, adaptando-se às novas
necessidades do mercado. Apesar desta mudança de
hábitos de consumo, continuo extremamente optimista face ao futuro do Algarve e de Vale do Lobo
em particular, pois falamos de um destino consolidado em contraste com destinos como o Dubai,
onde as expectativas sempre foram muito altas e
onde os preços continuam a aumentar, apesar das
vendas estarem estagnadas como reflexo da crise.

If you were chatting to potential buyers and they
were expressing concerns over financing options
and opportunities, what could you tell them about
the current lending positions in the banking system in Portugal?
Financing in Portugal, as in other European
countries, has not been as easy as it used to be and
banks have to make sure they can protect their interests of course, but our clients are continuing to
secure financing on their properties, and while the
process has become more vetted, it is still possible to
achieve the investment you are planning for. There
are always very mixed reviews in the media, but I
can say that banks are still willing to finance acquisition of property, but will always consider not
only the value of the property but the income of the
acquirer. Here at Vale do Lobo we work with the
strongest banks in Portugal, especially Caixa Geral
de Depósitos - one of our shareholders and their interest in foreign ownership in the resort continues
to be favourable.
A wide variety of nationalities and age groups are
visiting the resort. How would you say that Vale do
Lobo is answering to this diversity of clients?
We understand the needs of our clients. We do
have a variety of clients with different needs and expectations. It has always been like this and therefore
we continue to seek and meet their wishes. Our diversity of bars, restaurants, shops and recreational
facilities, in addition to the sporting strengths we
offer here ensures we can provide a well rounded
selection to meet all age groups and nationalities.
We are continuously investing in our facilities and
will always endeavour to cater to all our visitors and
property owners by listening to them and hopefully
providing what they are looking for.
How would you say Vale do Lobo differentiates
itself as a social community, both for its residents
and visitors?
I think sometimes people on the outside may
have certain perceptions of the resort and often don’t
realise the sheer diversity of what we have on offer,
nor the outstanding community that forms Vale do
Lobo. People are very surprised when they visit and
leave with a very different view of the resort. We are
much more than just another holiday destination, we
offer a lifestyle experience and a place where people
of all nationalities and ages live together, many yearround, and we warmly welcome visitors to the community. For me, it is a truly unique environment and
a very safe place for all the family.

Se potenciais clientes lhe expressassem as suas
preocupações sobre opções de financiamento e
oportunidades imobiliárias, o que poderia transmitir-lhes sobre o actual sistema de financiamento em Portugal?
O financiamento em Portugal, tal como em
outros países Europeus, já não é um processo tão
simples como anteriormente, pois os bancos precisam certificar-se de que podem proteger os seus
interesses. No entanto, os nossos clientes continuam a ter o financiamento das suas propriedades assegurado e apesar do processo ser hoje mais
controlado, ainda é possível alcançar o investimento pretendido. Muito embora este tema origine sempre opiniões controversas por parte dos
meios de comunicação social, posso garantir que os
bancos ainda estão dispostos a financiar a aquisição
de propriedades tendo em conta não só o valor da
propriedade mas a sua rentabilidade. Vale do Lobo
beneficia de um relacionamento privilegiado com
os maiores bancos Portugueses, principalmente
com a Caixa Geral de Depósitos – um dos accionistas
do resort e, cujo interesse na participação estrangeira em Vale do Lobo continua a ser muito favorável.
Distintas nacionalidades e grupos etários visitam
regularmente o resort. De que forma Vale do Lobo
se adapta a esta diversidade de clientes?
Temos plena consciência de que precisamos
adaptar-nos continuamente às diferentes necessidades e expectativas dos nossos clientes. Sempre foi
assim, pelo que a nossa prioridade absoluta continua a ser a sua satisfação. A ampla oferta de bares,
restaurantes, lojas, serviços e actividades de lazer
existentes no resort, complementada pelas excepcionais condições desportivas, asseguram que existe sempre algo de interesse para todas as idades e
nacionalidades.
Como diferencia a comunidade de Vale do Lobo
para residentes e visitantes?
Acredito que, por vezes, a percepção vista do
exterior do resort pode ser bastante diferente da
realidade, pois desconhecem a multiplicidade de
opções e actividades aqui disponíveis, assim como
o forte sentido de comunidade que caracteriza Vale
do Lobo. Sentimos que muitas são as pessoas que,
de alguma forma, ficam surpreendidas quando
nos visitam, pois têm uma perspectiva totalmente
diferente do resort. Somos muito mais do que um

In a tourism driven region with so many courses
to choose from, what heightens the golfing experience for golfers at Vale do Lobo, and how is the
resort investing to ensure it continues to answer
to their needs?
Vale do Lobo is still a unique destination and
therefore the type of clients/ visitors and our Property Owners – whom are always our priority - are
not so much price oriented. They are instead looking increasingly for exclusivity and so we have decided not to make large price reductions on the
courses, unlike many other courses in Portugal and
indeed in Europe. We have made some adjustments,
admittedly, and offer a number of special golfing
packages for those looking to enjoy accommodation also here in the resort, but by keeping prices in
line with the services we offer, we can continue to
provide the level of facilities that golfers would expect from a luxury resort. Competition is fierce in
the Algarve but we have two championship courses
that remain as popular as ever and we have always
been famous for our golfing community. We have
welcomed many new members to the Vale do Lobo
Golf Club and hope to see many more in the years
to come. We have also offered special incentives and
prices to golfers who are guests of our resident golfing community and this has been greatly welcomed.
A main concern for potential visitors and residents is the security that can be offered for all the
family. How is Vale do Lobo investing in protecting its community?
We have consistently invested in maximizing

ampla variedade de campos, o que distingue a
experiência de golfe no resort para os seus jogadores e de que forma consegue assegurar que continua a superar as suas expectativas?
Vale do Lobo continua a ser um destino de eleição, pelo que os critérios de selecção para clientes/visitantes e proprietários do resort – que serão
sempre a nossa prioridade – não se baseiam apenas
nos valores praticados. Os nossos clientes procuram,
cada vez mais, exclusividade, pelo que a estratégia
da empresa não contemplou uma grande redução

the use of our security facilities and in training our
security patrols in both first aid and emergency response. I think that the fact that we offer 24-hour
security vigilance, coupled with patrols throughout
the resort, is one of the main reassurances we can
offer to couples and families who choose to visit or
even reside here. In the adversities of today’s modern world, Vale do Lobo still boasts the safest resort
in the Algarve and we are proud of our reputation
for protecting our resort’s community. We have established agreements between private hospitals in
the Algarve and the Vale do Lobo Medical Centre,
meaning we also have that reassurance in the unfortunate event of an emergency. Through our Proprietors’ Club we have been liaising with Property
Owners to install and upgrade alarm systems and
this has been both widely welcomed and extremely
effective.
Vale do Lobo has always shown a strong commitment to innovation. Perhaps you could tell
us some of the most recent investments and improvements in the resort and how they will benefit the community.
We are investing heavily in the reinforcement of
the Algarve coastline, working with the Portuguese
government and this will, in turn, benefit the resort
with a beautiful new beach for our residents and
visitors. We also have plans in place to renovate and
extend both the Clubhouse, main Resort Reception

certo, como a criação de programas especiais para
quem pretende conjugar golfe e alojamento no
resort. No entanto, ao manter os preços em conformidade com as condições que dispomos, podemos
continuar a assegurar o nível de excelência que o
golfista mais exigente espera encontrar num resort
de luxo. A concorrência é muito intensa no Algarve, mas temos dois campos de golfe de excepção
que permanecem tão populares como sempre, a par
com uma singular e dinâmica comunidade de golfe.
O Clube de Golfe de Vale do Lobo tem registado
uma significativa adesão de novos membros e esperamos receber muitos mais nos próximos anos. Em
complemento, também desenvolvemos incentivos
e tarifas especiais para jogadores de golfe convidados da nossa comunidade residente, o que tem sido
muito bem recebido.
A principal preocupação para potenciais visitantes e proprietários são os níveis de segurança para
a família. De que forma Vale do Lobo investe na
protecção da sua comunidade?
Temos investido constantemente na optimização dos meios de segurança e na formação de equipas de patrulhamento do resort, tanto em primeiros socorros como em situações de emergência.
Na minha opinião, creio que a combinação de um
serviço de vigilância 24 horas e de um patrulhamento permanente a todas as áreas do empreendimento, constitui uma garantia irrefutável dos níveis
de segurança que dispomos tanto para casais como
para famílias que optam por visitar ou até mesmo
residir em Vale do Lobo. Apesar do adverso cenário
da nossa sociedade actual, é com grande orgulho
que Vale do Lobo continua a beneficiar de uma sólida reputação como um dos resorts mais seguros no
Algarve. De igual modo, e para maior tranquilidade
da nossa comunidade, foram recentemente estabelecidos acordos entre os hospitais particulares no
Algarve e o Centro Médico de Vale do Lobo, salvaguardando assim, eventuais situações de urgência.
Por sua vez, e através do Clube de Proprietários,
temos reforçado junto dos nossos proprietários a
instalação de sistemas de alarme que se têm revelado uma medida preventiva muito eficaz.

with Infralobo E.M. we implemented many new
road improvements, with the widening of the main
access road and resort entrance. Infrastructures
were also put in place at Vale de Santo António – our
latest new development. Throughout the resort we
will continue to invest in services, new facilities
and maintain our customer commitment. Despite
the current climate, we are seeing new visitors and
potential Property Owners and this is looking very
positive.
All I can add is that I hope that we give every
one of our clients a very special experience here at
the resort and that it will become a new home away
from home - a warm welcome to you all.

Realizámos um significativo investimento na
orla costeira do Algarve, em colaboração com o
Governo Português, proporcionando uma magnífica praia para residentes e visitantes. De igual modo,
os novos planos incluem a renovação e ampliação
do Clubhouse e da Recepção de Vale do Lobo, bem
como do complexo balnear da Praça. Ao longo do
ano passado, conjuntamente com a Infralobo E.M.,
realizámos diversas intervenções significativas nas
redes viárias, incluindo a ampliação das principais
estradas de acesso a Vale do Lobo. Além disso, foram
igualmente finalizadas as infra-estruturas no Vale
de Santo António - o nosso mais recente empreendimento. Um pouco por todo o resort, iremos
continuar a investir em serviços e em novas infraestruturas, honrando o compromisso para com os
nossos clientes. Não obstante o enquadramento
socio-económico actual, temos registado novos visitantes e potenciais proprietários, o que é extremamente positivo.
Tudo o que posso acrescentar é que espero que
possamos continuar a proporcionar a todos os

The first course, Ocean, was designed in 1968
and at the time was the third golf course to be built
in the Algarve, reflecting the work of golf architect

In 2008 the two courses were joined as one at the
Vale do Lobo Golf Club.
Vale do Lobo’s golf members get together daily
to play in a social but competitive environment.
During the week there are singles stableford and
medal competitions running from Monday to Friday, whilst on Saturdays team completions demonstrate the beauty of the social scene of the Golf Club;

num ambiente de convívio e descontraída competitividade. Semanalmente, de Segunda a Sexta-feira,
têm lugar diversas competições individuais stableford e medal, e aos Sábados o torneio por equipas
reflecte a forte componente social do Clube; casais
e amigos reúnem-se para jogar, culminando, geralmente, com um almoço na esplanada do Spikes, no
Clubhouse, com vista para um jardim de esculturas
e para o putting green.

In the first week of February each year the
Amateur Week takes place – a competition that has
been running for the last 17 years where members
and visitors join together to play a week of competition. During the third week of May each year, the
Golf Club also hosts the Foursomes Week which is a
pair’s week. Apart from these two main events, that
draw competitors from all over Europe, the Golf
Club members participate in the Algarve League
where clubs in the Algarve play against each other
throughout the year. Meanwhile the Captain’s Day,
Club Champion and Boxing Week tournaments are
other very welcomed competitions that keep up the
social and competitive spirit.

golfe decorre, habitualmente, no início de Fevereiro; o Amateur Week, assinalando já a sua 17ª edição,
onde membros e visitantes se juntam numa animada semana de competição. De igual modo, também
a terceira semana de Maio reserva um popular e
tradicional torneio de pares anual do Clube, o Foursomes Week. Para além destes dois grandes eventos, que atraem participantes de toda a Europa, os
membros do Clube também participam no campeonato de clubes do Algarve, com jogos ao longo de
todo o ano, entre os clubes da região. Adicionalmente, outras competições como o Captains’ Day, o
Club Champion e a Boxing Week, entre outras, são
iniciativas muito populares, que fomentam o convívio entre a comunidade.

era impossível, ao dar a tacada de saída no Ocean
Golf Course, com as suas deliciosas vistas mar,
que gentilmente desliza até à praia, descobrimos
então a verdadeira essência da tranquilidade do

ávido jogador, um permanente desafio em todo o
seu percurso, que culmina com o Par 3 do buraco 16. Mesmo para quem tem o privilégio de jogar

the bottom of the sea, but
in sharp contrast there is no
life on the moon yet the sea
nurtures a colourful world
of its own. The Algarve’s
coastline is a particular source
of interest due to the richness
of its biodiversity. Throw in a
myth or two of gold lingering
at the bottom and there’s
certainly plenty to dive for.
Anyone who’s had the fortunate opportunity to
dive along the Algarve’s coastline will testify that
the bottom of the sea in this region holds the key
to an outstanding array of natural treasures of
undeniable beauty and high scientific value, all of
which have contributed to its recognition in marine
research as a region of rich and unique biodiversity.
Vale do Lobo plays an important role in the region’s marine life with the stretch of water in front
of its beach widely considered as one of the most
diverse in the Algarve. Professor Jorge Gonçalves,
marine biodiversity specialist at the Algarve University, explains the importance the area plays and
the signature composition it boasts. “On the Eastern
coast of the Algarve the sea bottom is mainly identified as sand whereas in front of Vale do Lobo we
have detected an intriguing and complex formation
of rocks, known as Barrocas, and which we like to
describe as islands or, in more idyllic terms, an oasis
of life.”
Whilst this particular stretch of coastline has
emerged in recent years as a focal point of research,
let us not forget that the waters running parallel to
the Algarve have always played an important role
in maritime history as a key commercial route and
in the age of discoveries. Countless ships have succumbed to the force of the salty waters in this area
and many can still be found today, albeit in pieces,

Na realidade, é na área frente a Vale do Lobo
que existe uma das zonas mais importantes em
termos de biodiversidade da região. O Professor
Jorge Gonçalves, especialista em biodiversidade
marinha da CCMAR da Universidade do Algarve,
explica a importância desta área e quais as características que a diferenciam. “No sotavento Algarvio
os fundos marinhos são maioritariamente arenosos, enquanto que em frente a Vale do Lobo, curiosamente, existe um complexo rochoso como plataforma de vida excepcional, denominado Barrocas,
que são como ilhas ou oásis de vida.”

but important extracts nonetheless for divers and
researchers into the history of marine activity in
Portuguese waters. Of course there’s talk of gold
and treasure, too, only to be expected from an area
notorious as a ship’s graveyard, but there may just
be some truth in the myths yet. For example, the
Spanish frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes
(Our Lady of Mercy) was sunk by the British during the Battle of Cape Santa Maria on 5th October
1804 and was said to be carrying an unimaginable
amount of gold coins at the time. It still remains one
of history’s mysteries and has been widely tipped to
be nestling on the sea bottom not far from Vale do
Lobo’s shores.
Whilst the gold has yet to be discovered, this
area of coastline undeniably hosts an extraordinary
diversity of other treasures that have captured the
attention of both recreational divers and experts in
the field. So much so that in recent years the Algarve
University recently launched an in-depth study into
mapping out the marine flows and life prevalent in
this particular area. The project, known as RENSUB,
first brought about the discovery of the precious
rock clusters in front of Vale do Lobo, which have
now been declared as one of the richest concentration of marine biodiversity in the south of Portugal. “We have been conducting extensive research
into this area,” continues Professor Gonçalves. “The
depth of this rocky complex ranges between 12 and
18 metres, depending on which formation as there
are many in the area and each is quite unique in its
shape and composition. The Malhada do Gado is one
of the most famous points in this formation, lying

ficando, até hoje, à mercê do mar salgado. Descobrir
esses barcos, ainda que em pedaços, é muitas vezes
mais do que conhecer a própria história. Na realidade, um dos mais procurados naufrágios nesta
zona remota à batalha de 5 de Outubro de 1804, ao
largo do Cabo de Santa Maria, e que até hoje permanece por descobrir, a fragata Nuestra Señora de las
Mercedes, cujo carregamento de ouro o transformou num mito dos caçadores de tesouros e que
poderá repousar tranquilamente ao largo de Vale
do Lobo.
A localização do ouro permanece um mistério,
no entanto toda esta área da costa abriga, inegavelmente, uma extraordinária diversidade de outros
tesouros naturais que merecem uma atenção muito
especial de mergulhadores e especialistas na matéria. Neste âmbito, o CCMAR da Universidade do
Algarve tem vindo a proceder a uma avaliação
exaustiva dos fundos marinhos, através do projecto RENSUB, que acabou por revelar esta zona de
afloramento rochoso que constitui, de facto, a mais
importante concentração em termos de riqueza

Ecological Reserve, which only heightens its importance.”
The RENSUB project’s primary objective is to
identify and create an inventory of the principal
habitats and species along the central Algarve coast.
More specifically it studies the marine communities
of algae, plants, fish and macro invertebrates that
live in the area between 0 and 30 metres of depth
along the coastline. By conducting extensive research, RENSUB can ensure that both the marine
area and sustainability of its habitats can be protected and enhanced.
With the exception of Vale do Lobo, the bottom
of the sea is mainly sand boasting some maerl beds made up of red coloured calcareous algae, which in
richer countries is often used in compost and in the
pharmaceutical industry.
“Up until now more than 1.272 species have been

como parte da Reserva Ecológica Nacional Submarina.”
O projecto RENSUB tem como objectivo inventariar e cartografar os principais habitats e espécies
da costa central Algarvia. Mais especificamente,
estudam-se as comunidades marinhas de macroalgas, plantas, peixes e macroinvertebrados bentónicos, que habitam entre os 0 e 30 metros de profundidade da orla costeira. Deste modo, este projecto

32 of those newly associated to the waters of Portugal”, offers Professor Gonçalves. In fact the Iberian
Península is a transition zone of species from the
cold waters of the North and the hot waters of the
South (Africa) with a Mediterranean influence also
and all of these factors are evident in the many tropical and exotic species that are being found.”
Recent discoveries for this area of Portugal include two fish – Steven’s Goby and Jeffrey’s Goby
(Gobius gasteveni and Buenia jeffreysii), one gastropod
mollusk, commonly known as a sea snail (Ocinebrina
nicolai) and another beautiful gastropod mollusk,
the Fusinus albacarinoides, which is the most recent
specie to have been discovered through the project
and so far only known in the Algarve Coast.

“Até ao momento, foram identificadas pelo
projecto RENSUB cerca de 1.272 espécies no total,
sendo 32 delas novas espécies para Portugal”, enfatiza o Prof. Jorge Gonçalves. De facto, a Península
Ibérica é uma zona de transição de águas frias do
Norte, águas quentes do Sul (África) e também do
Mediterrâneo que se reflecte nas muitas espécies
tropicais e exóticas que aqui se encontram.”
Os novos registos nesta área, para Portugal,
consistiram em dois peixes (Gobius gasteveni, Buenia
jeffreysii), um gastrópode, vulgarmente conhecido como caracol-do-mar (Ocinebrina nicolai) e uma
nova espécie (Fusinus albacarinoides), que constitui
a mais recente descoberta do projecto e que até ao
momento apenas é conhecida na nossa costa.

The Algarve’s coastline is an exciting world waiting
to be discovered…
Shoreline substrates play home to 444 species distributed into 90 fish and 354 macro invertebrates, making the region a marine biologist’s
dream and a real treat for the eyes of divers along
the coast.
The Ophiura albida Brittle Star, Astropecten aranciacus Sea Star and Sphaerochinus granularis Sea Urchin all perform an important role in the structure
of the community as resistant and resilient species
that help to control the fauna population. Brown
Algae forms gently entangle with the many beautifully coloured Anemones. Other marine treasures
include Gastropod Mollusks, Encrusting Sponges,
Sea Urchins and the fascinating Epifaunal Sea Cucumbers. Fish that live predominantly in this area
include some of immense commercial value, such
as the Two Banded Seabream Diplodus vulgaris, Coris
julis and small benthic fish, such as the Ringneck
Blenny Parablennius pilicornis and the evasive Gobius
xanthocephalus.

As biocenoses do substrato arenoso foram

As espécies de equinodermes, como a Ophiura

desempenham um papel fundamental na estruturação da comunidade, pois são espécies oportunistas, resistentes e com uma voracidade de registo, e
servindo de controlo das populações da endofauna.
As algas castanhas são espécies estruturantes destas
biocenoses que acolhem uma magnífica diversidade de coloridas anémonas. Outros tesouros naturais incluem gastrópodes, esponjas, o ouriço-domar, ofiurideos e os pepinos do mar. Os peixes que
predominam nestes fundos são juvenis e adultos de
espécies demersais com valor comercial, como a safia
Diplodus vulgaris, e outros considerados dependentes
de sistemas recifais como o bodião Coris julis, e pelos
pequenos peixes bentónicos, os cabozes Parablennius
pilicornis e Gobius xanthocephalus.

worth a shot, Vale do Lobo’s very own Grand Champions Caixa Geral de Depósitos tennis tournament
is a magnet for world class players from the senior
tour who enjoy its ‘no pressure’ environment but
still relish the challenge of the game. A highlight in
Portugal’s sporting calendar and a firm favourite
with the players, now celebrating its tenth anniversary, this is an event that never fails to bring the best
out of the resort’s social scene. Living Magazine looks
back at what’s shaped its identity over the years to
achieve its success of today.
Among players, the Grand Champions Caixa
Geral de Depósitos tournament is largely regarded
as the most popular location on the ATP Champions
Tour. Admittedly this is largely due to the convivial
atmosphere that prevails throughout the week of
matches but the resort scores highly too for its location in the Algarve’s sunshine and the scope of facilities available for use. Players can choose to relax
by the pools or on the beach during their free time,
venture onto the golf courses or enjoy a massage at
the Royal Spa.
For spectators, the tournament represents a
golden gateway to see some of the finest players of
all time in their splendor and the opportunity to
mingle with other tennis fans in a rather refreshing
environment of relaxed play with plenty of crowd
interaction. It has gained in popularity over the

In addition to the numerous sports activities and
events at the resort, including its famous golf facilities, tennis has clearly played an important role in
shaping the history of Vale do Lobo’s sporting success. In response to demand from visitors and residents, 2001 saw the creation of a tennis tournament
that more than exceeded expectations and brought
some of the greatest players of all time to the resort.
Its popularity has continued to grow ever since and
it is today a firm favourite in the resort’s event calendar, attracting star players, media and spectators
from all over Europe.
A par com as inúmeras actividades desportivas disponíveis em Vale do Lobo e tal como o golfe,
também o ténis sempre desempenhou um papel

modalidade para residentes e visitantes de Vale do

It all begins...
Following in the path of the Vale do Lobo Grand
Summer Festival and its Summer Party and golf
competition, the Vale do Lobo Grand Champions
Legends Tennis Gala is born. A week of matches
brings tennis legends to the resort, include Björn
Borg, Emilio Sanchez, Henri Leconte and Jeremy
Bates for a 150,000 dollar prize. Blaster Bates takes
everyone by surprise in the outstanding defeat of
the greatest tennis idol of all time, Ice-Borg.

competição de golfe, nasce o “Vale do Lobo Grand
Champions Legends Tennis Gala”. Ao longo de uma
semana de jogos, quatro grandes lendas da modalidade, incluindo o Sueco Björn Borg, o carismático
Francês Henri Leconte, o Espanhol Emílio Sanchez
e o Britânico Jeremy Bates, disputaram entre si um
aliciante prémio monetário de $150.000. “Blaster

An Official ATP Tournament
Following the success of the first edition, 2002
sees the Delta ATP Senior Tour become a premier
reference on the world tennis circuit, creating a
group of eight players for each edition. The final
sees John McEnroe beat Andrés Gomez to the title.

numa referência do calendário mundial da modalidade, adoptando um formato que passa a contar

Reputation for excellence
The growing popularity of the tournament reflects the level of play and the quality of players that
annually sign up to participate. McEnroe returns
to defend his title but finally surrenders to his German opponent Michael Stich who claims his first
title on the ATP Senior Tour.

Champions tournament. Spanish favourite Sergi
Bruguera takes the title after a high powered game
against Brazilian star Fernando Meligeni, in less
than an hour! Meligeni follows in the footsteps of
John McEnroe in an invincible performance.

Conheça os Sandelins…
Jarmo Sandelin is a Swedish professional golfer
with five European Tour titles under his belt and
who also played in the 1999 Ryder Cup. He has
enjoyed a sponsorship with Vale do Lobo in recent
years representing the resort at numerous tournaments. Along with his wife Linda he raises funds for
disadvantaged children through his own Charity
Foundation. Together they and their three young
sons have made the resort a cherished second home
and here they tell Living Magazine just what makes it
so special to them.
Jarmo
Our relationship with Vale do Lobo stems from
golf, hardly surprising of course for a golfer! I remember that I had just started to play and had seen
pictures of the 16th hole of the Royal Golf Course in a
magazine somewhere and thought it looked beautiful. But as with everything, you go to work, you lead
your lives and never seem to find time to visit everywhere you want. By chance I was in the region in
1998 having just finished 2nd at the Penina Open and
I just thought ‘right, now’s the time for us to visit’,
which we did and had a wonderful time. After that
with work it wasn’t until 2000 that Linda and I came
back for the Skins Game, meeting up with Colin
Montgomery, Laura Davis and Claudia Schiffer, so it
was an eventful visit. It was also pretty decisive and
we both knew then that it was the place for us. It was
around about this time that I started to build a golfing relationship with Vale do Lobo with the resort
offering me a sponsorship that I am still fortunate
enough to enjoy today and it was really the beginning of a very special bond between the resort’s
management, staff, residents and ourselves. Not
just with the golf but as a place that we both regard
today as our second home. Linda and I knew that
we wanted to spend as much time here as we could
and so buying a property was a very realistic option.
We looked at several but in the end decided that we
really wanted to stamp our own personalities on
this new home, especially as we were planning on
spending a significant amount of time in the resort.

It was Jarmo who first spotted our plot and I
recall how excited he was when he told me about
it. We were very lucky with the location and at the

residência, revelando à revista Living porque é tão
especial para eles.

Recordo que me tinha apenas iniciado na modalidade e tinha visto fotos do buraco 16 do Royal Golf
Course numa revista, que achei verdadeiramente
magníficas. Mas tal como sucede com tudo o resto,
começamos a trabalhar, a vida passa e nunca arranjamos tempo para visitar todos os lugares que desejamos.
Por mero acaso, estava eu na região em 1998,
tendo alcançado o segundo lugar no Open da Penina e pensei “bem, agora é a altura ideal para visitarmos o resort”, o que fizemos e tivemos uma experiência fantástica.
Depois disso, o trabalho não permitiu que
regressássemos até 2000, quando participei no
Skins Game, que reuniu grandes celebridades como
Colin Montgomery, Laura Davis e a abrilhantar o
evento, a modelo Cláudia Schiffer. A visita, aquando
deste evento, foi assim determinante, pois soubemos ambos, quase imediatamente, que este era o
lugar perfeito para nós.
Esta foi também a época em que iniciei uma
colaboração especial com Vale do Lobo, através da
representação do resort em competições. Nasceu,
assim, entre nós e a Administração do resort, os
funcionários e residentes uma relação muito especial que perdura, não só pelo golfe, mas pelo lugar
que hoje consideramos como nossa segunda casa. A
Linda e eu sabíamos que pretendíamos passar aqui
o máximo de tempo possível, pelo que a compra de
uma propriedade era a melhor opção. Analisámos
várias opções, mas por fim decidimos que queríamos uma casa que reflectisse as nossas personalidades, especialmente porque planeávamos passar
mesmo muito tempo em Vale do Lobo.

time it was one of the last remaining plots in that
area. When I saw it myself I could see exactly why
he’d fallen in love with it and the type of property
we could build there. We have the most beautiful views across the golf course and out towards
the beach and sea and if these weren’t enough we
have the diversity of views over the stunning nature reserve. When the sun’s shining and you are
on the roof terrace you really wouldn’t want to be
anywhere else. Of course we had reservations; this
was an entirely new project for us and we weren’t
sure about the building process, but we both have
very distinct ideas of what we wanted, so with the
help of a Swedish architect we were able to put
these on paper. After that, Vale do Lobo’s design and
construction teams set to work. Initially, we were
concerned that wouldn’t have enough input on the
final design, but we found everyone involved very
willing to give us the home we had imagined and
it was a pretty smooth process from start to finish.
It was reassuring for us to know that things were in
hand whilst we were back in Sweden and that all
of the team were always ready to help and keep us
informed. Having been through this experience of
building a home in a resort, Jarmo and I will both
say to you that at Vale do Lobo it couldn’t be easier
and the feeling that you get when they hand you the
keys is fantastic! Certainly no regrets and now we
have a beautiful home that reflects all the things we
love and where we know that we can enjoy plenty of
family time whenever we are here.

Nowadays with our three boys having school
commitments Linda and I tend to work around
these when booking to come over. The flying time
is so quick and easy though that it’s never a hassle
coming over. We try to spend around 12 weeks here
on average per year – a couple of months in the summer, Easter, Christmas time, whenever we can as a
family really. The boys all associate Vale do Lobo as
their second home – they have grown up with it –
which means they are always keen to come out too.

All of our boys are golf mad and our eldest, Lukas, who is now 9 is already a 27 handicap, so Jarmo
and I will often have a long leisurely lunch at Spikes
and we can sit there and relax whilst the boys spend
time on the practice green, which is great. They also
like going to the mini golf at the Praça so I often find
myself down there with them whilst Jarmo is practising his game on the greens. That said, I’ll try to
squeeze in a few rounds myself and love the views
of the Ocean Golf Course. Actually that was another
selling point for me with our house as we can easily just do 7 or 9 holes and then walk home, which
I find very relaxing, and the greens are beautifully

Curiosamente, foi o Jarmo quem primeiro viu o
nosso lote e lembro-me do quão entusiasmado estava quando me contou. Ficámos muito felizes com
a localização e naquela altura era um dos últimos
lotes disponíveis nessa área e quando eu própria
vi o terreno percebi de imediato a razão pela qual
o havia fascinado e o tipo de propriedade que ali
poderíamos construir. A nossa moradia beneficia
de uma das mais belas vistas golfe, praia e mar, e
como se não bastasse, também de uma magnífica
paisagem natural.
A verdade é que quando o sol brilha e estamos
no terraço, não nos imaginamos noutro lugar.
Claro está que tínhamos alguns receios, este era um
projecto inteiramente novo para nós e não sabíamos
como seria o processo de construção. No entanto,
ambos partilhávamos de ideias muito definidas
sobre o que pretendíamos, pelo que com a ajuda de
um arquitecto Sueco conseguimos transpô-las para
o papel.
Depois disso, as equipas de design e construção
de Vale do Lobo colocaram mãos à obra. Inicialmente, estávamos preocupados que não tivéssemos
grande influência no projecto final, mas o envolvimento e dedicação de todos os intervenientes
acabou por provar o contrário, sendo a sua prioridade concretizar a casa que idealizáramos, do início ao
fim do processo. Era muito reconfortante para nós
saber que tudo estava em boas mãos quando estávamos fora, na Suécia, mantendo-nos sempre a par
da evolução dos trabalhos. Tendo já a experiência
de construção de uma casa em Vale do Lobo, Jarmo
e eu podemos assegurar que não poderia ter sido
mais simples e que a emoção de receber as chaves
da nova propriedade é, simplesmente, fantástica!
Desta forma, temos agora uma magnífica casa, que
reflecte tudo aquilo que gostamos, para desfrutar
em família, sempre que regressamos.

Actualmente, tanto eu como a Linda gerimos a
nossa vida e planeamos as visitas ao resort em função
dos compromissos escolares dos nossos três filhos.
No entanto, e apesar da viagem de avião ser fácil e
muito rápida, nem sempre é tão frequente como
gostaríamos. Em média, tentamos passar cerca de
12 semanas por ano no resort, durante os meses de
Verão, na Páscoa, na altura do Natal e sempre que
possível para toda a família. Os miúdos associam
Vale do Lobo a uma segunda casa, pois têm crescido
aqui, o que significa que também eles estão sempre
ansiosos por voltar!

Os nossos filhos são aficcionados do golfe e o
mais velho, Lukas, com apenas 9 anos, até já tem
27 de handicap, pelo que, muitas vezes, eu e o Jarmo

As a family we are all very sporty and tennis is another favourite of ours so the Grand Champions
tournament is a firm fixture in our diary and I try
to have at least one lesson at the Vale do Lobo Tennis
Academy whenever I’m there. Another thing I really enjoy is that we rarely have to hire a car when
we come to the resort – we use the Internal Circuit
Bus and I find that very useful, especially with the
boys. Jarmo and I feel safe enough to let our eldest
take the bus on his own when he wants to go to the
putting green for some practice and that is very important to us.
Jarmo
Golf is such a sociable game and I meet many
new people all the time and I always sing Vale do
Lobo’s praises highly. In fact it was through socialis-

passam o tempo a praticar, o que é excelente. Eles
também gostam muito de ir ao mini-golfe na Praça,
pelo que normalmente vou com eles enquanto o

Sempre que possível, também aproveito para
jogar golfe, especialmente no Ocean, pois a paisagem é deslumbrante. De facto, essa foi uma das
razões determinantes na compra da casa, pois
permite-nos jogar 7 ou 9 buracos e depois, facilmente, ao regressar a pé para casa, num percurso muito
relaxante e com os greens impecáveis, sentimo-nos
sempre num local especial. Somos uma família
muito desportiva e o ténis é outra das modalidades
que apreciamos particularmente, pelo que nunca
perdemos um torneio Grand Champions e tento ter,
pelo menos, uma aula na Academia de Ténis sempre

que estamos no resort. Uma das outras vantagens
que me agrada especialmente, é o facto de raramente precisarmos de alugar carro quando vimos a Vale
do Lobo, pois utilizamos o circuito interno de transporte, o que é muito cómodo, principalmente por
causa dos miúdos. Desta forma, estamos perfeitamente à vontade para permitir ao nosso filho mais
velho ir sozinho, sempre que lhe apetece, praticar
um pouco no putting green, o que é muito tranquilizador para nós.

number of events and an auction by chance, all of
which were highly successful, led to me starting
up my own Foundation which is aimed at providing support and care to disadvantaged children in
Sweden. Linda also works tirelessly to help me with
everything and is far more organized than me! She
helps with the hospitality and arranging the preand tournaments’ dinners and this is something we
both enjoy.

Whilst golf is a huge part of our lives, from Jarmo’s career, to my love of the game and our sons’
flourishing interest in following it also, Vale do
Lobo to us offers so much more than your average
golfing destination and I think it is a fabulous place
to bring up our family. Jarmo and I have been to
so many different destinations over the years due
to tournaments and find that many only maintain
them for the busier periods whereas at Vale do Lobo
everything is kept pristine all year round and that
is another thing that is very appealing to us. Whenever we have visited we have always found it all to be
clean, tidy and very welcoming and it’s things like
that really make a difference.

O golfe é um jogo muito social e estou sempre a
conhecer muitas pessoas novas a quem dou referências e bastantes elogios de Vale do Lobo. Na verdade,
foi precisamente por esta forte componente social
que me apercebi que poderia usar o golfe para
outros fins, além dos meus interesses profissionais.
Uma série de eventos e um leilão de caridade, muito
bem sucedidos, levaram-me a criar a minha própria
Fundação, cujo objectivo pretende dar apoio e assistência às crianças mais carenciadas na Suécia. A
Linda também trabalha, incansavelmente, para me
ajudar com tudo e é muito mais organizada do que
eu! Ela presta apoio na recepção dos participantes
e na organização das refeições dos torneios, pois é
algo que ambos gostamos.

Apesar do golfe ser uma grande parte das nossas
vidas, pela carreira do Jarmo, pela minha paixão
pelo jogo ou pelo crescente interesse dos nossos
filhos, Vale do Lobo oferece muito mais do que
um simples destino de golfe e para mim é mesmo
um local fantástico para toda a família. Ao longo
das nossas vidas, Jarmo e eu já visitámos inúmeros destinos diferentes, para acompanhar torneios,
constatando que, na sua maioria, apenas se preocupam com certas alturas do ano, mais movimentadas, enquanto que em Vale do Lobo tudo é mantido

Canadian born Greg Rusedski stormed the 2009
Vale do Lobo Grand Champions Caixa Geral de
Depósitos tournament in spectacular style, beating
Stefan Edberg to the title. The 36-year old, whose
British Citizenship led him to play for the UK for
the majority of his career, is famous for his serveand-volley style of play and for many years the
fasted recorded serve. His good humour made him
a popular addition to each tournament and since
his retirement in 2007 he has been helping young
players to work towards the rankings. Here, he talks
tennis and life to Living Magazine.
Welcome to Vale do Lobo, Greg. How are you enjoying your time here in the resort?
It’s been great, thanks and I’ve completely fallen
in love with not just here, but the region also. The
weather’s been fabulous, - it seems to be a very
friendly place and it’s a very relaxed atmosphere,
which you don’t get in a lot of places these days, so
yes, very happy to be here.
And how about the Grand Champions? You only
recently joined the Seniors Tour, how are you
finding the experience and is it living up to expectations?
Well, when you know you will have a chance to

Tem sido formidável, obrigado. Para ser sincero,
estou perdidamente apaixonado, não só por Vale do
Lobo, mas também pela região. O tempo tem estado
fabuloso e este parece ser um local com um ambiente muito descontraído e convidativo, característica
que não se encontra facilmente hoje em dia, pelo
que estou mesmo muito feliz por estar aqui.

Desde que se retirou, tem jogado regularmente? Considera mais difícil alcançar agora os seus
objectivos?
Certamente que não somos tão jovens como
costumávamos ser e embora muitas vezes pensemos que estamos mais rápidos do que realmente
somos, é tudo uma questão de movimento e de estar
no sítio certo, no momento certo. Claro está que não
iremos vencer o Nadal ou o Federer, mas diria que
ainda estamos entre os 100 melhores. Confesso que
estou muito satisfeito com o meu nível de jogo actual. Provavelmente só jogo, em média, quatro a cinco
vezes por mês, mas tento estar em forma e devidamente preparado para os torneios, como é o caso do
Grand Champions – pois sejamos realistas, nenhum
de nós quer perder!
Since your retirement, have you been playing
much tennis and do you find that it is harder now
to reach your goals?
Well, we’re certainly not as young as we used to
be, and whilst we often think we’re quicker than we
really are, it’s basically about movement, you know
– being in the right place at the right time. Of course
we’re not going to beat Nadal or Federer, but I’d say
we’d all make the top 100 mark. I’m pretty pleased
with my level of game right now, that said. I probably only play four or five times per month on average, but I put in structured training in the run up to
tournaments such as this one at Grand Champions
– none of us want to lose, do we?

Well, you certainly wowed the crowds here in a
spectacular victory. Congratulations! How do you
feel about beating Stefan Edberg to the title?
Fantastic! It truly is, and my first Senior’s victory, too, so very happy that I joined! Stefan is an
incredible player and it was an absolute honour to
reach the final with him. When Tim (Henman) and
I were younger he was a great help to us, which I
can’t thank him enough for, so it really is special to
play against him.

You held the record for the fastest serve in history
(149mph) for many years, until Andy Roddick surpassed this, more recently. Quite an impressive
feat - was that always one of your goals?
No, I always wanted to win more titles, but it
was still a great achievement for me to reach World
number 4, and people always remember Greg
Rusedski for the quick serve, so I guess that’s not a
bad thing! I don’t regret anything in my career and
I think I gave the best I could, despite a number of
injuries. You find it comes to a point where you are
fighting your body to keep going, but I enjoyed pretty much all of what I have done and continue to love
the sport.
What’s in store for the future?
Well, winning here at Grand Champions has
given me a brilliant boost and I’m really looking
forward to the rest of the tour and to coming back
here again next year. I have really enjoyed my time
here, so will definitely sign up for next year’s Grand
Champions. I have also been involved with training
young players for the last few years and I want to
keep channeling my energy into the promising new
players of tomorrow. We have some fantastic young
talent shaping up in the UK and it makes you very
proud when you watch them. My priority is spending more and more time with my family. I’m in a
good place right now.

Louis van Gaal is a highly successful Dutch football
manager currently in charge of the German club
Bayern Munich and a popular figure in Vale do
Lobo’s residential community. His career to date
spans the football world full circle, from midfielder
for Royal Antwerp and a number of other Eredivisie
Clubs, to coach at AZ Alkmaar and Ajax, followed
then by spells as coach of Barcelona and the Dutch
national team.
With seven league titles, three cups in three
different countries, the UEFA Cup, the Champions
League Cup and the World Cup all under his belt,
Louis is clearly a man with a passion for his job, although he confesses to having a soft spot for relaxation at Vale do Lobo, too. Here, he chats to Living,
offering an insight into his life with his wife Truus
away from the cameras.

Louis, you are quite a familiar face at Vale do Lobo
and have been coming to the resort for years. Tell
us what first brought you here.
Como figura habitual em Vale do Lobo desde
há anos, diga-nos o que o trouxe ao resort pela
primeira vez?
Well, let’s see. I had been in Portugal on a business trip when I was working as an analyst for a
Dutch broadcasting company many years ago and
remember really taking to the people, the climate
and the cuisine back then, but it wasn’t until 2003
that I actually visited Vale do Lobo. I was Technical
Director of Ajax and we were here on a training trip.
One night we went to Monty’s for some dinner and
all had a go at the karaoke. I still smile when I look
back at that! So, that was when I really first got to see
the resort and I just thought “wow!” and knew that
if I ever had the chance to live in the sunshine this
would be the place.
You have since bought a property at the resort.
Are you managing to spend much time in your
new home and what makes it so special?
I actually bought the plot in around 2005 having been blown away by the views of the coast. With
work commitments though it is not so easy to spend
as much time as you’d like on building the house,
especially when you are squeezing everything in
to short visits, but in the same token there was no
real hurry, and it was in fact our Algarve wedding in
2008 that gave Truus and myself the push we needed to making the final decisions on finishings and
décor, etc. We wanted it to look its best to show to all
our friends and family and we were so proud when
it was finished.
You mentioned you got married over here. That
must surely have made Vale do Lobo even more
special for you both.
We couldn’t think of a better place to bring all

do Lobo. Uma noite fomos jantar ao Monty’s e não
resistimos a uma sessão de karaoke. Recordo-me
sempre desse momento com um sorriso. Essa foi a
primeira oportunidade que tive para ver o resort,
e tive a certeza de que, se algum dia viesse a ter a
possibilidade de viver num “lugar ao sol”, o eleito
seria Vale do Lobo.
Desde então, adquiriu uma propriedade no resort;
tem conseguido aproveitar a sua nova casa? O que
a torna tão especial?
Na realidade, adquiri o lote em 2005, tendo ficado fascinado com a localização e vista privilegiada
sobre o mar. Devido aos inúmeros compromissos,
a nível profissional, não consegui dedicar o tempo
que gostaria na construção da casa. Acaba por ser
complicado ter que resolver diversos assuntos em
visitas de curta duração, mas também não tinha
muita pressa. A decisão de casar no Algarve, em
2008, e o desejo de partilhar a casa com os nossos
amigos, levou-me a mim e à Truus a tomar as últimas decisões em relação à decoração e acabamentos
da moradia.
Mencionou que se casou em Vale do Lobo. Isso
deve ter tornado o resort ainda mais especial para
ambos?

With so much on with Bayern Munich’s training
and games, work commitments must mean that
you only get to enjoy some relaxation here for brief
spells. Can you see this changing in the future?
I think so far we have had six to eight weeks here
this year and we try to pull every opportunity we

gostaríamos de passar mais tempo em Vale do Lobo,
sobretudo, porque quando regressamos sentimonos sempre rejuvenescidos. Se tudo correr como
previsto, logo que consiga atingir os meus objectivos profissionais, tencionamos passar oito meses
por ano em Vale do Lobo.
Para além de descansar, como usufrui do seu
tempo quando está no resort?
Eu gosto de golfe, mas sinceramente acho que é
o golfe que não gosta de mim! Na realidade, só jogo
em Vale do Lobo, o que significa um total de dez
voltas de golfe por ano.
O meu handicap é ainda bastante alto, mas tento
melhorar sempre que posso. Gosto especialmente
do Ocean Golf Course, considero que é o campo
onde jogo melhor. Para além de uma paisagem
espectacular, consegue sentir-se a brisa do mar. A
minha mulher está também a aprender a jogar golfe
na Alemanha e espero que ela possa jogar comigo.
Confesso que somos ambos fãs de comida picante, pelo que o Teahouse Oriental, na Praça, é o nosso
restaurante favorito. A comida é sempre muito boa
e os empregados muito simpáticos. Temos conhecido alguns residentes, na sua maioria Holandeses e
Ingleses, com os quais socializamos e desfrutamos
das inúmeras actividades que o resort nos oferece.
Com o Bayern de Munique a vencer a Liga Alemã
pelo 22º ano e na mesma temporada a conquistar a
Taça da Alemanha, a equipa prepara-se agora para
a Liga dos Campeões. Quais são os seus maiores
desafios no futuro próximo?

of us. Of course it’s hard and we would love to spend
more time here, especially as we always go back
feeling so refreshed, but we are hoping in the future
once I have fulfilled all my professional goals that
we will spend eight months a year if all goes to plan.
Relaxation aside, how do you tend to spend your
time where you’re in the resort?
I like the golf, but I’m not sure if it likes me too
much! To be honest, the only time I get to play is
when I’m in Vale do Lobo, so that usually means
around ten games a year. My handicap is still really
low, but I am trying to improve it all the time and
love playing the Ocean Golf Course as I always seem
to play better on there! The views are also outstanding and you can feel the sea air wafting around you
as you take in the scenery and enjoy the greens. My
wife has been learning too in Germany and hopefully she will get to play here with me.
We’re both self confessed spicy food fans so Teahouse Oriental is a favourite of ours at the Praça. The
food’s always good and the people are so friendly.
We have also got to know many other residents,
mainly Dutch and English, and that keeps us busy
too with the socialising and just taking in the many
facilities on offer.
With Bayern Munich having won the German Bundesliga for a record 22 times and securing the double
by winning the German Cup in the same season,
followed by the wave of success the team is riding in
the Champions League, what’s next in store for you
as coach of the team, and in the future?
Things are great at Bayern Munich and I’m very
proud to be associated with the team. The players
have all worked extremely hard and shown great resilience. I signed a two-year contract with the Club
and am still in the first year so there is plenty more
work to be done. For the future, I don’t know. It’s hard
to tell, but football is my passion and there are still
many things I want to do. I suppose if truth be told I
would love to win a European or World Championship with a national team some day. Name me a manager who wouldn’t! I have always had wanted to be a
national coach for Spain or Argentina. I speak Spanish so that has always been an ambition. I do know
that there will come a time when I will be ready to
take off the boots and then Truus and I will have
chance to do all the travelling we have planned to do
and of course spend as much time at Vale do Lobo as
we can. For now though, it’s work and plenty of it!

eu estou muito orgulhoso de estar com esta equipa.
Os jogadores têm trabalhado bastante e mostram ter
uma excelente resistência e aptidão físicas. Assinei
um contrato de dois anos com o clube e ainda estou
no primeiro ano, pelo que tenho ainda muito trabalho pela frente. Neste momento, o futuro é difícil
de prever, apesar do futebol ser a minha paixão, há
ainda muitas coisas que quero fazer.
De facto, eu gostaria de ganhar um Campeonato Europeu ou um Mundial, com uma selecção
nacional. Uma vez que falo Castelhano, sempre
quis ser seleccionador da Espanha ou da Argentina.
Certamente chegará a altura em que me irei retirar.
Nesse momento, terei a oportunidade de viajar e,
claro, passar o máximo de tempo possível em Vale
do Lobo. Por agora tenho apenas uma certeza: ainda
tenho muito trabalho pela frente!

Vale do Lobo destaca-se em ocasiões especiais
The big ‘O’, whether it is 30, 40, 50, 60 or more, is
always a time for celebration and in most partners’
cases a time of total terror! What to do, where to
take them, and of course, not to disappoint! When
Michael Meredith’s 60th birthday loomed it was his
new fiancée who had the challenge to make this
birthday an extra special one. With Michael having
been widowed a few years earlier, Louise’s challenge was all the more focused, and on the recommendation of a friend she turned to Vale do Lobo to
help transform every detail into reality.
Vale do Lobo obliged, and with the provision of
luxury accommodation for the week put in place, it
was hard to tell who was more excited at staying at the
same villa that Hugh Grant had enjoyed during his
visit last summer. Louise we suspect, but Michael was
equally as thrilled. Private, yet central, this beautiful
villa was to play host to one of the first of many surprises throughout the week: a private chef and butler
from Fine Dining in Style, the renowned private catering company that ensures all its chefs have Michelin
star training. With a six-course meal prepared and
served in the villa and the birthday couple taking
the advice of Vale do Lobo to ‘dress for the occasion’
Michael and Louise enjoyed a truly romantic and exceptionally special night, ‘a deux’.
Next was a thrilling journey to the Alvor Aerodrome. Collected by private limo from VIP Chauf-
Fazer 30, 40, 50, 60 anos ou mais, é sempre uma
ocasião especial e, na maior parte dos casos, uma
preocupação para o parceiro – o que fazer, onde
ir e, claro, como surpreender e não decepcionar.
Quando se aproximou o 60º aniversário de Michael Meredith, foi a sua noiva que enfrentou o desafio
de o tornar no mais especial de sempre. Depois de
Michael ter ficado viúvo alguns anos antes, a tarefa
de Louise era ainda mais importante. Por recomendação de uma amiga, decidiu, então, pedir a Vale do
Lobo ajuda na concretização das suas ideias, para
proporcionar a Michael a melhor festa de sempre.
Vale do Lobo aceitou o desafio, providenciando uma luxuosa moradia para a estadia. Foi difícil
perceber qual dos dois estava mais entusiasmado
com a ideia de ficar alojado na mesma casa onde
Hugh Grant estivera no Verão anterior. Louise estava extasiada e Michael igualmente maravilhado.
Exclusiva, porém central, esta moradia foi apenas
a primeira de muitas agradáveis surpresas ao longo
de toda a semana. O chef da “Fine Dining in Style”,
preparou uma requintada refeição para o casal que
foi servida no alojamento. Para Michael e Louise a
experiência converteu-se numa noite romântica,
verdadeiramente excepcional.
O dia seguinte reservou, para ambos, uma
emocionante viagem até ao Aeródromo de Alvor.
Uma luxuosa limusina da “VIP Chauffeurs” levou
feurs, the birthday couple drove into the tiny aerodrome in Alvor for a fabulous aerial journey along
the coast with Algarve Helicopters. With Michael
firmly installed as co-pilot the helicopter gave literally a bird’s eye view of the coast.
Moving on from the aerodrome they continued
to head west towards the new F1 approved racetrack
that has not only hosted many international events
since it opened in November 2008 but is a popular
choice with Vale do Lobo’s visitors and residents
who wish to take advantage of the exceptional special conditions that the resort has in place for them.
Waiting for Michael and Louise with champagne
and a private hospitality box were Algarve Racing,
suppliers of the only private rental boxes at the
track. With the circuit’s racing school on hand and
ex F3 driver Darren Malkin primed to give everyone
an extremely swift tour of the track, at speeds upwards of 170 miles per hour, this toys-for-the-boys
treat was equally as popular with Louise, who declared ‘more more’ after her two-lap trip.
Next in store was a spot of golf, and where better to improve the game, than back at the resort’s
very own Golf Club. As a self-confessed bad golfer,
a lesson with a professional is always a good starting point especially if you think that one day your
retirement (as Michael hopes) will lead to more
time on the fairways. An hour with Vale do Lobo
golf pro António Sobrinho, 11-time number one
in Portugal, certainly proved a hit, in that after an
hour Michael was at least able to hit the ball, not
necessarily in a straight line, but definitely a huge
improvement from the rather strange positions he
started in when first arriving at the practice area
with António. Declaring that it was the best golf moment of his previously chequered past, Michael was
overwhelmed with the straightforwardness and
likeability of António and admitted afterwards to
slight apprehension that he would be booted off the
lesson after 10 mins!

para Oeste, no Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, que desde a sua inauguração, em Novembro de
2008, já acolheu diversos eventos internacionais de
renome, sendo uma proposta muito popular para os
amantes de velocidade. Michael e Louise foram recebidos com champanhe numa área privada da “Algarve Racing”, especialmente preparada para o efeito.
Com o circuito de corridas à disposição e com
o ex-piloto de F3, Darren Malkin, preparado para
proporcionar uma alucinante viagem a mais de
250km/h, esta experiência, normalmente muito
apreciada pelo sexo masculino, fez sucesso com a
Louise, para quem as duas voltas à pista ainda despoletaram mais interesse.
Para descontrair um pouco das emoções fortes,
nada melhor do que alguns momentos de golfe para
aperfeiçoar o nível de jogo, regressando ao Clube
de Golfe de Vale do Lobo. Michael considera-se um
mau jogador, pelo que uma aula de golfe com um
profissional constitui um excelente ponto de partida para quem espera, um dia, poder vir a dedicar

As Michael attempted the impossible, Louise
took sanctuary at the Royal Spa. Excessively pampered with a host of treatments from the extensive
selection on offer and the tranquillity of the surroundings, the birthday treat was clearly paying off
for the both of them. And it was with a heavy heart
that they were persuaded to leave behind their afternoon in time for their deliciously prepared dinner at the resort.
So with half the week gone and still more surprises, it was the time to speed into the Algarve
countryside and beyond. Within an hour they arrived at an estate in the neighbouring Alentejo region called Herdade dos Grous which makes its own
award-winning wine and has a restaurant specialising in serving delicious organic and home-grown
food. A wine tour, tasting and leisurely stroll then
led to an enjoyable tasting menu of the chef’s specialities. Fuelled with tasty morsels and the finest
estate reserves, a very sleepy couple arrived back at
Vale do Lobo at nightfall!
With the week drawing to a close, and following
plenty of relaxation at Vale do Lobo, it was time to enjoy Michael’s actual 60th birthday lunch at Vila Joya, the

confessando, mais tarde, que sentira uma ligeira
apreensão inicial, tendo chegado a pensar que seria
expulso logo após os primeiros 10 minutos.
Enquanto Michael tentava o impossível, Louise rendeu-se às relaxantes propostas do Royal Spa,
usufruindo de vários tratamentos. Este aniversário
estava, realmente, a superar todas as expectativas
de ambos.
Com metade da semana já passada e ainda mais
surpresas reservadas, foi então a vez de, pelo interior do Algarve, seguir em direcção ao Alentejo. Em
pouco menos de uma hora chegaram ao seu destino, a Herdade dos Grous, conhecida pela produção
de vinhos premiados e pelo restaurante especializado em gastronomia regional, que utiliza os seus
próprios produtos biológicos. Um agradável passeio
pela herdade antecedeu um requintado menu de
degustação. Ao anoitecer, o casal, meio adormecido
pela ampla variedade de deliciosas iguarias e vinhos
das melhores reservas da herdade, regressa então a
Vale do Lobo.

Classical sounds fill the air, a warm summer breeze

classical concert, which takes place annually on the

Vale do Lobo may well be a firm favourite with
families as a premier holiday destination but it also
scores highly on the list of stars hoping to close the
doors on the flash of the cameras for a brief spell.
Since its foundation, it has seen familiar faces from
film through to the sporting world, and has earned
a reputation as a safe and reliable place for them
to enjoy quality moments with their families and
friends without the interruption of the media.
In recent years, some of the most famous football clubs from Europe have chosen to bring their
teams to Vale do Lobo for training purposes, with
the resort highly regarded for the success of these
visits and the full scope of the facilities and specially
tailored packages it offers each of them.
Particularly memorable are the visits of Real
Madrid, the England team and Manchester United, who along with their families brought not only
sporting accolade to the resort but plenty of glamour at the same time. Holidaymakers at the Praça
would be forgiven for taking a second glance with
the likes of Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch having
a good old sing song at Monty’s. “I think it was such
a hit with the team because we were all made to feel
so welcome during the trip,” offers Michael Owen,
who has since returned for rehabilitation training.
“I always enjoy my time here, the weather, the people – it’s all good. Having the beach, too, gives me
the chance to add variety to my routine and build on
core strength whilst the facilities at the Fitness Centre are first class”. He is joined by David James, England’s goalkeeper in these thoughts. The player has
been to the resort on a number of occasions, and
more recently the visit was instrumental in his rehabilitation ahead of the 2010 World Cup. “The pitch

Where there’s a resort there are properties and
where there are properties there are residents, but
it is actually surprisingly hard to then draw from
that a community bursting with life and friendly
faces. Vale do Lobo is unique, being home to many
different nationalities of all ages and providing
them with the infrastructures and facilities to enjoy
not just the resort but to socialise all year round.
Here, Living Magazine chats to some of its residents
and discovers why Vale do Lobo holds such a special
place in their hearts.
Nathalie Heidegger, Germany
For Nathalie Heidegger the assurance of yearround property care was high up on the checklist
when considering a second home. Along with her
husband and three children, it was around 2002
when she first paid Vale do Lobo a visit and as a family they discovered that the resort ticked all the right
boxes for a second home.
“We had been coming to Portugal for years and
having spent some time at the resort by chance we
soon realised that its facilities and infrastructures
would suit us perfectly as a base for a holiday home,”
explains Nathalie. “It’s within easy flying distance
from Germany and the weather’s much nicer, so
those were huge swaying factors, but what we liked
the most was the safe and secure environment it
offered. We were concerned about the responsibilities of maintaining a property that’s not being used
all year round, especially with a large investment,
but the services provided through the Proprietors’
Club gave us the reassurance to go ahead and buy
our home.”
Tennis is a favourite pastime of the Heideggers
with the entire family playing regularly, so their location in the heart of the Vale do Ténis is a dream
come true. “The children love taking lessons at the
Tennis Academy and we all like to play as much as

Nathalie Heidegger, Alemanha
Para Nathalie Heidegger, a garantia da gestão
da sua propriedade durante todo o ano, foi um dos
mais importantes factores na sua decisão de aquisição de uma casa em Vale do Lobo. Na realidade, foi
na companhia do marido e dos seus três filhos que,
em 2002, visitou o resort pela primeira vez, descobrindo de imediato que este era o local perfeito para
uma segunda residência.
“Já há vários anos que vínhamos a Portugal e
após termos passado, por mero acaso, algum tempo
no resort, rapidamente nos apercebemos que as suas
condições eram perfeitas para uma casa de férias,”
explica Nathalie. “A curta distância e voos regulares
da Alemanha, aliados a um clima muito melhor do
que o nosso, foram determinantes na nossa decisão.
Mas o que mais nos atraiu foi mesmo o ambiente seguro. Estávamos ainda preocupados com as

the resort than the average eight weeks we manage
now.”

Retired footballer Riccardo and his wife Laura
first discovered Vale do Lobo on the recommendations of a friend around eight years ago and it was
love at first sight for the couple.
“We had always travelled to different places for
our holidays,” recalls Laura. “Vale do Lobo was actually the first place that we ever returned to and we
soon realised that it was going to play an important
role in our lives.”
For Riccardo it appealed as a place where he
could relax from the pressures of a hectic schedule in professional football and enjoy quality time

planear voltar na próxima edição.” Com um sorriso, acrescenta “O restaurante Ken Lo’s Memories of
China é perfeito para nós, pois além de podermos
ir a pé, a comida é deliciosa. A praia e os campos de
golfe mantêm-nos sempre ocupados como família, pelo que estamos muito satisfeitos com a nossa
escolha e só esperamos poder passar mais tempo no
resort do que as habituais oito semanas por ano.
Riccardo & Laura Scimeca, Reino Unido
O ex-futebolista Riccardo e a sua esposa Laura
descobriram Vale do Lobo através de um amigo, há
cerca de oito anos atrás e foi amor à primeira vista
para ambos.
“Sempre viajáramos para destinos diferentes
durante as nossas férias”, recorda Laura. “Vale do
Lobo foi, de facto, o primeiro lugar ao qual regressámos e em breve nos apercebemos que iria mudar
as nossas vidas”.
Para Riccardo, o que mais o atraiu foi o facto do
resort ser um lugar onde podia relaxar das pressões
da sua agitada vida profissional, como futebolista, e desfrutar de bons momentos com Laura e os
seus dois filhos, Luca e Emília. “Sentimo-nos muito
bem aqui e estamos ansiosos por poder usufruir

“We can go for a round of golf, meet up with other
residents, or go along to one of the events. It really
doesn’t matter, whenever we are here we know we
will have something to do and plenty to enjoy.”
with Laura and their two young children, Luca and
Emilia. “We all feel very comfortable here and look
forward to the chance to enjoy the facilities and the
brilliant weather together,” he explains. “We were
fortunate to find a property that suited all our requirements and works as such a great base for our
holidays. We’ve been very impressed with the whole
sales process and how to get the most from a property here, and have since purchased a second property in the resort.”
With Riccardo newly retired from full-time
football the Scimecas are looking forward to spending considerably longer periods at the resort. “We
are always excited about the prospect of coming
over,” adds Laura fondly. “The children have grown
up visiting here and it is a huge part of their lives
also. As a family we can enjoy the beach and the
sunshine together and there are plenty of activities
to keep them entertained and happy. We have found
that we can really relax, which can be hard in many
places, and Riccardo and I feel very comfortable in
the safety levels it offers us, especially with the children still being very young.”
“I’m a keen golfer, too,” adds Riccardo. “Both the
courses are excellently maintained and a joy to play
on. I’ve had many a good moment and there is a very
welcoming golfing community here, which again is
another thing to look forward to when we come over.
I suppose if you are looking for somewhere that will
give all of you something to do, whatever the time of
the year, then you really won’t find anywhere better
than Vale do Lobo. We’re certainly making the most
of every moment!”
Rob and Coby Westerhoff, Holland
Amongst the many nationalities residing at
Vale do Lobo is a strong Dutch community and Rob
Westerhoff and his wife Coby have been enjoying

Rob e Coby Westerhoff, Holanda
Entre as muitas nacionalidades de residentes
em Vale do Lobo, existe uma grande comunidade
Holandesa, e o empresário Rob Westerhoff e a sua
mulher Coby, há já vários anos, que têm partilhado o singular ambiente de convívio com os seus

com pessoas de diferentes nacionalidades, dentro e
fora dos campos de golfe e, de facto, o ser um local

For the Westerhoffs, perhaps the hardest thing
is to balance work and leisure, particularly with
Rob’s hectic schedule as the CEO of Medavinci, so
that they can spend as much time at the resort as
possible. “We are working on this,” continues Rob
with a beaming smile.

The Algarve Tourism Board has just unveiled its
latest publicity campaign – “Algarve. Europe’s most
famous secret!” in a bid to reinforce the region’s
national and international status, recognizing
too that nobody can resist the mystery of a secret.
Thus, the Algarve is shown to tourists through the
eyes of the Algarvean people as they reveal the best
beaches, landscapes, delicacies and secret hideaways, making it an enticing opportunity to discover
the region.
Here, the President of the Algarve Tourism
Board, Nuno Aires, accepts the challenge posed
by Living Magazine to reveal a few of his regional
favourites...
Starting with the discovery of the interior. Here,
it is easy to get lost in the long sloping paths of the
Monchique Valley, breathing in the scent of the
Eucalyptus trees as I take in the spectacular colours
and hills of the landscape, or opt to relax at one of
the natural thermal spas famous in the área.
And because the Algarve is perhaps most
famous for its gastronomy, I would follow this up
with a mouth watering seafood cataplana or freshly
caught grilled fish, accompanied by a well rounded
rose wine from the region at one of the many fabulous beach restaurants we enjoy here. Barefooted,
with my toes almost dipped in the sea, watching the
sunset as a yacht graces by on the distant horizon.
As night falls, glamour takes its hold at one of the
Algarve’s countless street courtyards and gardens
to embrace a ballet or jazz performance. Later in
another cultural heartbeat, I’ll wander down to one
of the most fashionable discos where I’ll hope to see
one of the many national or international jet set that

24-hour medical service and a wide range of

eventuality. It also operates an emergency callout service and has special agreements with local
private hospitals for patient peace of mind.
The Praça
This bustling beachside complex lies at the
heart of the resort’s community life and in
addition to its many vibrant bars and restaurants, is home to the Rotunda Swimming Pool
complex with its stunning view of the ocean,
Kangaroo Children’s Club and mini-golf, and
a number of water sports at the beach.

Vale do Lobo Golf Club
The Vale do Lobo Golf Club organizes diverse
tournaments and competitions on a regular
basis, providing a busy social calendar for both
members and visitors. The clubhouse is fully
equipped, offering a range of services, including putting green and driving range, and a
welcoming place for the golfing community to
relax. Vale do Lobo boasts two challenging and
beautiful golf courses – the Royal and the Ocean
– which have previously hosted the European
PGA Tour event and the Portuguese Open.
One of the largest tennis facilities in Portugal, the
Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy attracts national and
international tennis fixtures. Facilities include
14 courts, of which ten are all-weather and four
synthetic, as well as a mini-tennis and paddle
tennis court. Lessons and activities run daily.
The Wellness Centre
The Vale do Lobo Wellness Centre combines the
modern equipment of the Fitness Centre with the
tranquility of the Royal Spa, offering extensive
health and pampering facilities to deal with every
aspect of wellbeing - from the treatment of diverse
skin conditions and muscular skeletal problems
to achieving fitness and stress management.
