In the years 1938–1941, nearly 20,000 European Jews escaped the terror of the Nazis by
fleeing to Shanghai, China. Most would end
up spending a decade in exile, building a
community known as „LittleVienna“ and surviving in a ghetto controlled by the Japanese.
