Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the CCFLT Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to our 2014 Spring
Conference with over 80 sessions for you to attend! The Board has worked hard to put on this
incredible professional development and networking opportunity for you! We hope you are ready
to learn a lot and have fun while you are doing it!
Our theme this year is “The Real World of World Languages.” There are so many buzzwords in
education and “21st century, global citizens” is definitely getting used a lot these days. But, what
does it mean and how does it affect our students and us? This is the question that Jon Valentine,
our keynote speaker will address. As you attend all the great sessions over the next couple of
days, keep this question in your head and ask yourself how you can incorporate all these new
ideas into your teaching and preparing students to be global citizens in the 21st century.
This conference is a place to learn new ideas and to re-energize you as a teacher. However, it’s
also a time to network and meet other professionals as passionate as you are about teaching.
Please plan to attend our receptions and luncheons and make the most of your networking
possibilities.
Presidents’ / Welcome Reception, Thursday from 7:00 – 9:00
Award’s Luncheon (ticket must be purchased), Friday, from 12:15 – 1:45

They have great products and services that will enrich your teaching. They also help make this
conference possible, so make sure to thank them for being here! Also, share your favorite ideas
and ah-ha moments via Facebook and Twitter. The person who posts the most about the
conference will win a prize! Speaking of prizes, make sure to be present for the drawings during
the Exhibitor’s Open House Friday afternoon!
We know it is hard to plan for a substitute and take time off of work, so we thank you for doing
so to be here with us. You will not regret it! Enjoy all the conference has to offer and we hope to
see you next February at the joint CCFLT/SWCOLT Conference!
Sincerely,
Cristin Bleess, CCFLT President

How did we get here and where are we going? Everything has shifted
following the great recession. The skills that our parents and grandparents needed to
succeed look very different than those that our students will require to thrive in a global
economy. Every business is now a global business, and proficiency in a world language
other than English is now the greatest competitive advantage in every career field. Come
learn how linking our programs to college and career readiness initiatives as well as
career and technical programs can add a new energy and relevance to the work that you
do every day - and will ensure that your students' college applications and job resume's
fly to the top of the pile. What a wonderful time to be a world languages teacher!
For over fifteen years, Jon has worked with experts in education,
policy, and workforce development to connect the global
workforce needs of industry with educational policy and world
language programs. As the Program Manager for Languages and
Global Initiatives for the Georgia Department of Education, Jon
spearheaded development of state-level international partnerships,
led educational and business delegations abroad, and oversaw the
development of the Georgia Workforce Development Initiative – a
multi-agency program linking international businesses in Georgia
with area partners in education. Since June, 2013, Jon has been the
Director of Foreign Languages for Gwinnett County Public Schools where he is currently
overseeing the design and implementation of the district’s first dual language immersion schools,
leading proficiency-based language program development, and coordinating international
business outreach initiatives. As a classroom German teacher in Fulton County Schools, Jon
more than doubled the size of his middle and then high school German programs by focusing on
proficiency targets and workforce relevance. He is a certified-advanced speaker of German and
recipient of several service and leadership awards
from consulates and international cultural
organizations. In addition, Jon serves on multiple
local and national world languages and educational
governance boards. He received his Master’s degree
in Applied Linguistics from Georgia State University
at Atlanta and Bachelor’s degrees in Education,
International Studies, and German from Miami
University at Oxford. An Atlanta resident, Valentine
has lived in Atlanta for more than 16 years.

The ballot box is in the Exhibits Hall. Stop by to cast your vote. Full biographies are available by the ballot box. Candidates for President-‐Elect (Vote for one) Becky Loftus Spanish Teacher at Oberon Middle School, Jeffco I am an imperfect, highly motivated, hard-‐working language teacher committed to student achievement in foreign languages and I represent thousands of teachers just like me. The key to raising achievement for all students is to ensure that caring, committed and qualified teachers are empowered to lead and inspire students to do their best. As President of CCFLT my focus will be student achievement and recognition, as well as providing teachers with resources and training to be the best for our students. Thank you for believing in me. Susan Murray-‐Carrico German Teacher at Pine Creek High School, Academy District 20 CCFLT has so much to offer the membership and I would be thrilled to take a lead role on this team. Since becoming involved with CCFLT I have benefited from its professional development opportunities; shared my own experiences; served as a Board member; and, acted as Webmaster. Along with 18 years of classroom experience teaching German in all levels, kindergarten through AP, I’ve served as department chair, PD Lead Team member, technology trainer, and exchange coordinator. More recently I’ve been working with CDE on the Content Collaboratives and the Sample Curriculum Development Project. I believe that my experience makes me uniquely qualified to serve in this role. Candidates for At-‐Large Representative (Vote for one) Dr. Maria Langley Assistant Dean at Pikes Peak Community College No personal statement was provided for the program. No photo provided 23 Candidates for Elementary/Secondary Representative (Vote for four) Karen Carmean Spanish Teacher at Sabin World Elementary School, DPS My name is Karen Carmean and I am part of ACTFL as well as Phi Sigma Iota, and of course CCFLT. I would like to be a member of the CCFLT board because I think it is important for professionals to continually work together to better ourselves and provide insight to others. I would love to share some great ideas about elementary language instruction & technology, as well as provide insight into the IB Primary Years Program and developing interdisciplinary units. I am also a lot of fun and love to collaborate with other “language lovers.” Noah Geisel Spanish Teacher at Grant Beacon Middle School, DPS My name is Noah Geisel and I am a Spanish teacher at Grant Beacon Middle School (DPS). I have taught English, Spanish and Technology for 13 years. In 2013, I represented our organization as the ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year. Learning from and sharing with colleagues at CCFLT has been a vital to my teaching and, if elected to serve on the board, I look forward to the opportunity to serve CCFLT members as a strong advocate for our profession. Eliza Pfeifer Spanish Teacher at St. Mary’s Academy I began teaching in Massachusetts at an urban public high school. I was the sole foreign language educator and relied heavily upon professional organizations for training and advice. Eight years later, as a CCFLT board member I will repay the community that continues to support my teaching endeavors. I want to ensure meaningful professional development and networking opportunities for its members, my colleagues. It is an exciting time in language education as new ACTFL standards influence classrooms nationwide. I am enthusiastic about the changes their effects on student experience and look forward to sharing my perspective and excitement with CCFLT. Kelly Rogers French Teacher at St. Mary’s Academy My desire to serve on the CCFLT Board stems from the incredible mentorship I’ve received from fellow members and my desire to continue to make foreign language instruction accessible and appealing to my generation of young educators. I am fortunate to teach in an environment in which risks, innovation, and creative thinking are encouraged and supported, and I am eager to share my love of and successes with organic language acquisition with others as the movement grows. I seek to work within the CCFLT community to continue to improve on best practices in the discipline and find ways of truly imparting a passion for cultural and linguistic study to our incredible and inspiring students. 24 Joanne Russum Spanish Teacher at Bear Creek High School, Jeffco CCFLT is THE professional and advocacy group for language educators in the state of Colorado. For me it has always been a resource to use for inspiration, collaboration, and professional development. I am interested in serving on the board to help advocate for our profession, to help us focus on the unique needs of language learners in our standardized testing crazed society, and to give back to the organization that has helped me develop as an educator. Candidates for Post-‐Secondary Representative (Vote for one)
Dr. / Lt. Col Dodge Professor of French at the United States Air Force Academy I would love to serve on the CCFLT board in order to foster cooperative relations between the Air Force Academy and other foreign language institutions in Colorado. I hope to bring my academic and real-‐world knowledge of international relations and language to the board and CCFLT members across the state. CCFLT and the people of Colorado have been an incredible support to the mission of the Academy, and I see this as a small way that I can give back to this wonderful community in an area that is very near and dear to my heart. Dr. Haning Hughes Professor of Chinese at the United States Air Force Academy As the Director of Strategic Languages at the US Air Force Academy, I direct the curriculum development and designs instructional methodologies for over 80 elementary, intermediate, and advanced foreign language courses in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Through her CCFLT board membership, I hope to energize and organize the community of less commonly taught languages, and provide a forum where these Colorado educators from all academic levels can collaborate and communicate in the development of more robust and effective second language acquisition learning resources, teaching materials, and assessment instruments. Elaine Tendetnik Professor of French at the United States Air Force Academy I have taught for 17 years at all levels of French at the junior, community, and state college level which also include eight years at the US Air Force Academy, where I am currently an Assistant Professor of French.
