TURTLE CARE

Section I: Safety

To date (2015) we have supervised or assisted with the raising of more than 500 turtle hatchlings
at more than 20 schools in Massachusetts without any human health problems. Hatchling
Blanding’s turtles are safe animals to raise in a classroom setting as long as basic common sense
hygiene practices are followed.

Section VIII: Adapting these Protocols for Other Species of Turtles
These protocols work well for raising baby snapping and painted turtles with the following
modifications:
Snapping turtles may benefit from adding live food earlier and a more varied diet earlier than as
recommended above. Baby snapping turtles tend to be hearty eaters and will grow more rapidly
than Blanding’s turtles if fed adequately. SAFETY CONCERN: New snapping turtle hatchlings
are very docile and, in any case, can’t inflict any injury. Our experience is that the turtles remain
amenable to handling without trying to bite in almost all cases throughout the 9 month
headstarting period. However, as a basic precaution, as your snapping turtle babies grow,
caution should be used in handling them. Always hold their shells from behind the midpoint.
Painted turtles are stronger swimmers than Blanding’s turtles. They will enjoy deeper water in
their aquaria. They are also less carnivorous than Blanding’s turtles and so may appreciate the
addition of red-leaf lettuce and other dark greens to their diets.
