No More Trailers ?
For Endless Summer Cruisin,
participants concerned about the no trailer parking ordinance... it will not
take effect in time for the 2015 October car show. We do anticipate changes
for the May 2016 event, but we are working with the Mayor and City Council
to come up with a workable and effective procedure to accommodate trailer
parking for our loyal participants. Anyone with questions please do not

For what it’s worth ...
By J.D. Kurzmann
With this issue the cool evenings and changing leaves start to bring a sense
of closing for the 2015 car cruising and show season. So I thought it would be
a good idea to discuss personal tastes in owning a “specialty car” and art.
I know what you are thinking……has this guy gone off his rocker or what,
but just take a moment and continue reading. Maybe it will give you a whole new perspective on car shows,
drag racing, and cruising events.
The classification of a “specialty car” is quite broad. It takes into consideration any automobile that an
individual built as a street rod, custom cruiser, drag race bandit, classic, vintage ‘tin’, or foreign sports car.
Did you ever go to a car show event and look at cars that just do not make any sense as to why the owner made
the changes they did? Well, if you look at a specialty car more as a piece of art instead of a ‘show piece’ you will
come to appreciate the amount of work that a person puts into their collector car.
Art is very subjective, so are classic and vintage cars. When people go to an art gallery they stop and look at a
Picasso or Rembrandt and attempt to take in the artist feelings and thoughts at the time they painted it.
Collector cars are the same.
Just because someone is more at home using their hands to build a dynamite show car or a fast Super Stocker,
does not mean they are not artists too. In the example above, people go to car shows and other vehicle related
events to do what??? Talk about their cars (either past or present), look at other participants vehicles. It is
a reflection of the individual’s craftsmanship whether they are good painter’s and body work guys, excellent
mechanics, or have a good sense of putting all of the pieces together and just want to pay someone to have the
work done. It is their own piece of art!!!
So at the next car show or cruise you attend, try to keep in mind, when you see a primered, “in the process”
vintage classic, or one which makes no practical sense for the street, just remember, they could be the next Bobby
Alloway or Chip Foose. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Road Trip!
The Bel-Loch, 8a.m.
H
ave you ever wanted to travel Route 66 from
beginning to end? Did you know it begins in
Chicago, IL and ends at the Santa Monica Pier in
Los Angeles, CA? To travel the entire route would
require a huge investment of time and patience.
But you can do the next best thing; travel a portion
of Rt. 66.
My son Bryan and I did just that during the
first week of August 2015, and even traveled it in
a vintage car, a 1966 Chevy Impala. We flew back
to Maryland on a Saturday, and met up with Reg
Dixon who was storing the Impala at his shop, Reg
Dixon’s Service Center in Forest Hill, MD.
Hittin’ the Road again...
We attended a local cruise, performed some quick repairs with the
help of my buddy, Chuck Greason, and then spent the night at what I
affectionately refer to as the disComfort Inn of Towson.
The following day, after eating breakfast at the Bel Loc Diner, we
headed west, taking us around the Baltimore Beltway and out I-70.
The Impala performed flawlessly and the seating was quite comfortable for a 49-year old car.
We ended up stopping for the night
in Frankfort, KY which is between
Lexington and Louisville. The average
MPG was 17 MPG which is not bad for
a big car. It used 1 qt of oil. Even dirty,
the Impala is getting lots of thumbs
up, smiles, pointing, and horn honking. And at every fuel stop,
someone had one “just like it” back in the day. Since a police
officer parked his cruiser next to the Impala at the hotel, I didn’t
have to worry about it during the night.
A wicked looking storm blew into Frankfort the next morning, so we high-tailed it out of there. Our journey ended for the
day in Springfield, MO. We were able to drive a few miles on
Rt. 66 in Missouri, but found that Missouri does not embrace Rt.
66 tourism as other states do. It is quite broken up. Neither our
GPS nor online help could keep us on track, so we winged it.
Once we arrived in Oklahoma, we picked up Rt. 66 in Tulsa,
where it is referred to as Historic Rt. 66. There are no signs telling you direction of travel, approaching cities, nor any other helpful bit of
navigation. Plus the area is not exactly a “nice” area where Rt. 66 passes
through. After seeing a few sights and realizing we were going the wrong
way, we headed for the Interstate. Our destination was Stroud, OK, home
of the Rock Café.

Our Purpose

A
s Hot Rodders, we
started to look at
ourselves and realized
we are getting older.
The current average age
of a Hot Rodder is now
59! We also realized that
young people are moving
toward new “Plug and Play” cars where the computer on
the car will tell you what is wrong and you just replace
the whole assembly. Nothing today is repairable. Our Hot
Rods on the other hand require training and knowledge
as well as someone who knows what Dwell, a Carburetor
and Generator is and how to fix them. If we don’t step in
and get the younger generations involved with Hot Rodding
and teach them how to adjust a carburetor, dwell, a voltage
regulator, our cars will no longer give pleasure to someone
who can work on them, make modifications and drive them
they will be set aside to look at or be destroyed because
no one can get them running again. We also need to have
young people learn to restore a body, drivetrain or interior.
This is also a lost art since manufactures now use glue
and complete panes assemblies to repair new vehicles.
The carbureted straight six with a mechanical fuel pump
and distributor does not have a chance unless we train
someone to work on them.

I AM NOT DEAD, Contrary to rumors started by my competition.
ATLANTIC SPEED AND TRUCK is alive and well, still at 3 Brook Side
Drive in Wilmington, DE. I recently had a discussion of how many cars would
be left if you took away all the Novas, Chevelles, Camaros, Mustangs, fat fender rods and other assorted muscle cars- the answer is 3. Two require jumper
cables, one needs a part only available through the use of a time machine.
Of course, the owner is only willing to pay what the part was selling for when
the vehicle was new and Hoover was President. Welcome to the world of running an independent speed shop!
The Cecil County Drag show is coming up fast. It’s time for some of you old
farts to drag your old, never going to be used parts out of the garage.
This event is also a automotive flea market, it generates money, something
you need more than that part, I bet. Did you see the picture of the “Drivers of
the Sixties” taken at Cecil County earlier this year in the last issue? Looks like
the Board of Directors for Senility, Inc.- the only thing missing is the walkers
and canes. This old guy speed shop owner is in the same category. I have a
good idea, why not share our rich history and stories with the next generation
of racers and enthusiasts? I have over 43 years of experience and know how all
this stuff works, bet most of you also do. Check out the Custom & Classic Car
Educational Foundation ( www.customclassiccars.org ) in this issue. This is a
great way of ensuring our place in automotive history is not lost and forgotten.

When the Bugatti Competition Coupe Aerolithe was first unveiled, it shocked viewers with it’s sleekly
styled shape. The body of the Aerolithe (French for “Meteor”), was fabricated in Elektron magnesium
alloy, a material that was very difficult to weld. The low-slung body and teardrop fenders made the
car appear to be moving at high speeds. Like many concept cars, the original no longer exists, and
was faithfully recreated in magnesium using a genuine Bugatti chassis, historic photographs, known
specifications, factory records, and a paitning of the original car by a Bugatti designer.

Expozed Blended Car Show
On August 22-23 The Expozed Blended Car Show kicked
off with high hopes; show cars surrounded by a festival of
activities. Pat O’Brien, the show’s Producer had worked hard
and has dedicated a lot of his time and money towards making
this show happen. Many points can be argued as to why the
show was a bust; however, many points can be made as to why
Pat’s intentions and vision is exactly what we need for the car
scene. Richard Rawlings absence due to health took a big hit
on the show. Pat has met with folks and taken care of refunds,
and made sure everyone had their awards.
Here are a few words from Pat O’Brien, Expozed Car
Show: “I know that the great people of the car world are yearning for something new and different; they are tired of the same
old car show. I wanted to bring to them not just a car show,
but an experience that would resonate deep in their souls. I
might have come up short in showing them what I intended,
but I’m proud of giving it my best shot. I apologize to anyone
who didn’t appreciate the show. I had a vision that I wanted to
bring to the people. I’m not ashamed to have tried to enhance
people’s lives in some way.
I would like to thank all of my friends that helped and to
the new friends that I made. I would like to thank all the people
that reached out to me and said that they had a great time and
that they liked what I was trying to do.
First year events are always hard to pull off, especially
when trying to offer something different. Pat did everything he
said he would do, things just didn’t work out for him. A few
friends said they would be there next year should Pat bring
back it back. I know my friend Rose was elated with her trophy
and $500 award!

It is a revered place, where guys (and gals ) who really love cars can work, or just

Hell, we bet some of you have more $ in the garage than you do in your home!

John Szabo’s House/Garage
I had a carport near-miss after my guardian
angels saved me from a car almost falling on
top of me, so I decided it was time to build a
garage and lift. With the help of John Presley,
my son and a few others, it turned out pretty
nice. A small apartment on top, and all my
toys underneath. Thank you, Frank Brown,
for the idea. Now retired, I can play mechanic
to my heart’s content. Thank You, angels for
saving me and changing my direction. I have
a ‘56 Ford and a ‘33 Ford Vicky, and a ‘99
Ford Mustang that my daughter drove back
and forth to high school for two years. She
won Best car her senior year!
I guess I’m kind of a Ford
guy, but I have a ‘94 Chevy
truck for parts hauling and any
heavy work. All of them drink
too much gas, so sprinkle in a
couple Hondas for groceries
and life is good! See ya at the
car shows!

My wife Dixie and I were
married on October 24, 1964.
We were driving this 1963
Studebaker GT Hawk, which
was then only a year old.
It was my first new car, and I
still own it.
Back then, my foreman
at work owned a cabin on
Route 223 west of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and
had given us the week’s
use of it as a wedding
present. So, Dixie and I
spent our time exploring
the Battlefield, Chambersburg and surrounding
areas in the Hawk, and
decided to have dinner at
the Hickory Bridge Farms
Restaurant. In the following days, we visited our
relatives in Bedford and
Hummelstown, and the
Stude ran flawlessly.
Fast-forward fifty
years, and I was thinking
what to do for our Golden
Anniversary. The cabin
was no longer available,
so I decided to spend several nights at the Hickory
Farm, which was only
3 miles from there, and
has since added a Bed &
Breakfast.
On October 24, 2014
I asked Dixie to drop the
housecleaning, and told
her we are eating out.
Where? she asked.
When I said Gettysburg, she smiled and
knew what I was up
to. That day was as
beautiful as it was in
‘64, so I packed up
everything I needed,
(mostly pills) and
headed off for the
ninety minute drive to
Hickory Farm.
After a great
Stromboli, I decided
we should have a
dessert, and when I
showed the waitress
our car and told our
story, she served
dessert for free!
We logged 208
trouble free miles on
the GT that week,
and I was ready for
anything. The 289
engine ran great, and
even though I had
a trunk full of parts
and tools, we never
needed them.

On August 1st, The Grand Opening of the 301 Plaza Annual Car Show
in Middletown Delaware was a huge success. The Truck Stop is under
new management and we hope to hold the show annually in the years
to come. Thanks to all that made it possible.
