A LETTER FROM JOE UBBEN, CVO
Welcome!
To our members, supporters, staff, family, and friends, it is great to have you
here to celebrate 2015 and to look ahead to the exciting opportunities in
2016. Our Valparaiso Family YMCA continues to provide more than 15,500
members consistently worthwhile experiences in building spirit, mind and
body. For that, we have to thank our dedicated front-line workers…you
know, those folks who greet you with a smile, fold towels and clean the
treadmills. Behind them stands our Senior Staff with tremendous depth of
experience, and a Leadership Team made up of amazingly talented individuals
always looking for new opportunities to grow our Y’s work in youth
development, healthy living and social responsibility.
I am also fortunate to work with the best Board of Directors in the City.
While you may not know all the individuals on the Board, believe me when I
tell you they are committed to making sure this Y continues to be one of the
best in the country.
For me, this meeting brings my two-year tenure as the Chief Volunteer Officer to an end. A lot has happened over
these two years, and I am proud to leave this position in the very capable hands of our incoming CVO, Gloria
McKown. Working with our CEO, Bob Wanek and the Leadership Team, has been great. We are very fortunate to
have such a hard-working group of leaders.
Thank you for being a part of the Valparaiso Family YMCA. I look forward to seeing this Y continue to do remarkable
things in our community.

VALPARAISO FAMILY YMCA FOUNDATION REPORT
The YMCA Foundation Board was busy navigating market volatility in 2015, as was the
rest of the investing world. The beginning balance of the Foundation was
$1,575,148. Although income from dividends and interest was $77,677, this was
offset by mainly unrealized losses $87,357, and investment fees associated with
investment activity of $9,417, resulting in a net investment loss activity of
$19,097. Contributions totaled $5,720 for the year. The Foundation supported Y
operations and programs with $48,952, and incurred marketing and other operating
expenses of $11,026, resulting in an ending year-end balance of $1,501,793.
New in 2015, the Foundation awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a high school student
within the Y’s Porter County service area, who was interested in pursuing a career in
social services. Due to the large number of requests, the Foundation Board agreed to
award two $1,500 scholarships in 2016.
The Infinity Circle, which is comprised of individuals and families who have made
contributions to the Foundation either during their lifetime or through testamentary
gifts, hosted the annual recognition dinner on November 6th at the Valparaiso
University Center for the Arts (VUCA). Strategic Financial Group underwrote the
expenses for the event, and we had live entertainment by Chris and Lou. This event is
not only a time to thank those who have made a contribution to the Foundation, but
also a means to share how others can remember the Y through their gifts. It is our
goal to continue to grow the Foundation and share how the Foundation can make a
difference in the lives of our community.
If you are interested in learning how you can become a member of The Infinity Circle,
please contact the Y’s CEO, Bob Wanek; CDO, Deb Koeppen, or Endowment Chair, Dr.
John (Jack) Felton, for more information.

VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR
DAWN AND DAVE COLLINS
Dawn and Dave Collins have
co-chaired our Annual
Campaign for the last two
years and have agreed to a
third! The Valparaiso Family YMCA has met
and exceeded annual campaign goals under
their leadership when we asked them to
help us “Reach New Heights” and be “Super
Heroes”. Dawn and Dave have
enthusiastically immersed time, energy and
philanthropic spirit as leaders for our
Annual Campaign in engaging new
members, volunteers and donors to actively
participate in all events supporting the
Campaign. In 2014, goal was exceeded by
the first week of October; and in 2015,
goal was met on December 31st. In all,
donations from their leadership have
reached almost half a million dollars! Their
genuine passion for our mission and work
in youth development, healthy living and
social responsibility, truly makes the
Valparaiso Family YMCA be “a better us” in
our community!

ELAINE ANDREWS
Elaine Andrews is
married and has two
young sons. She is a substitute teacher’s
aide at Washington Township Elementary
School where her sons attend. Previously
she was an ultrasound tech and also a
flight attendant and still enjoys traveling.
Elaine has been with the Y a little over a
year and quickly became a part of the
membership department. Elaine assists
Megan and Melissa by keeping files in order
and keeping inventory of retail sales items.
We appreciate the hours Elaine gives to the
the Y each week.
MARILYNN UEHLING
Marilynn Uehling is
married and the mother
of two adult sons and
grandmother of two
adorable grandchildren. She has been a
member of the Valparaiso Y over 30 years.
She is retired from Washington Township
School system after teaching 3rd grade for
35 years and additional years prior to
beginning at Washington Township. After
retiring, Marilynn quickly became involved
in the community by volunteering at
Immanuel Lutheran Church and Compass
International Family Center.
At the Y, Marilynn gives facility tours,
makes copies and files. She also makes new
member packets each week ensuring the
front desk has what is needed to process
memberships. We appreciate the hours
Marilynn volunteers and her willingness to
help with many tasks.
KRIS DE YOUNG
At the Y, for the past five years, Kris has
lead the Y Book Group. She knows her
audience, their passion for reading and
ensures everyone in the group feels
welcome at the Y. Connection with others
is just one of the many important ways we
serve our community. Kris is a wonderful
example of facilitating connection in our
YMCA. Her willingness to adapt to the
needs of our members is valued by the
members and Y staff.
The Y Book Club continues to meet
monthly and fosters meaningful
relationships with people who love reading
and lively conversation.
Kris has also served in our
community by tutoring high
school and college students in
science and English. Talented in
many ways, Kris also has made
quilts and comforters many
have been donated to a local
shelter.
