One Hundred Twenty-Second Commencement
May Twentieth} Nineteen Hundred Eighty-Three
Eight-Thirty Friday Morning
The National A n t h e m
0 , say! Can you see , by the dawn's early light,
what so proudly we ha il'd at the tw ilight's last glea ming,
Whose broad stripes and bright sta rs, th ro' th e pe rilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we wa tched were so ga lla ntly streaming?
And th e rock et s red glare, the bombs bursting in air ,
Ga ve proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
0 , say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the hom e of the brave.

This pencil drawing of Washington Universi ty's Brookings
Hall, one of th e Saint Louis community's mos t famous land mark s, is the wo rk of Joseph D . Murphy. Mr. Murphy joined
the faculty of W ashington University's School of Architec ture
in 193.5 and was a full-time member until 19.52. During th at
period, he serve d from 1949 to 19.52 as dean of th e School of
Architecture. H e left academia to form th e firm of Murphy
and 'tackey, Arch itects , with th e late Eugen e J. Mac key, a
member of th e University's School of Architecture facu lty
from 1941 to 19.52. ( i\1r. Mackey subsequently served as a
lecturer on ho spital architecture for the gradua te pr ogram in
hospital ad ministration, Washington University School of
Medi cin e, from 19.51 to 1968, when he di ed.) After losing his
partner , Mr. Murphy, tog ether with some of the younger members of th e Murphy and Mackey organization , forme d a new
firm, Murphy, Downey, Wofford & Richman. Now retired as
a practicing p artner , Mr. Murphy resum ed teaching part-time
as an affiliate professor of ar chitecture at the University in
th e spring of 1980. In th e spring of 1982, he had a one -man
exhibition of his watercolors, charcoal and pencil d rawin gs at
Saint Louis University's Cup ples H ouse Ga llery.
A Brief History of Washington University
Founded in 1853, the University was located in downtown St. Louis
for its first fifty years. Ground for a new site on the edge of the city was
purchased in 1894 and in 1900 construction was begun on the first five
buildings of a plan based upon th e medieval courtyards of Oxford and
Cambridge Colleges.
These first ivy covered Gothic buildings with their red granite walls ,
arches and gargo yles form ed the quadrangle. Upon completion, these
original buildings were leas ed to the 1904 World's Fair. The lease money
mad e it possible to begin con struction of additional buildings and all
were used for th e Fair befo re th e University mov ed in . The athletic
stadiu m, Francis Fi eld , was built to accommodate the 1904 Olympic
games, presented in conjunction with th e F air.
Over the years, the original "Academic Gothic" architecture has been
succeede d by a varie ty of eclectic styles, but certain key principles of
th e origin al plan wer e retained. Plazas and courtyards still reflect the
origin al theme.
A Note on the Commencement Ceremony
Washington Uni versity and oth er American universities, public and
private, follow th e pattern of degree granting developed at the University
of Paris, which was founded about 1100.
In th e early days of th e Uni versity of Paris the discipline of the students,
and indeed their entire education fell under the jurisdiction of the Bishop
of Paris who was responsible for local educational matters. In an attempt
to pe rform his office, th e Bishop claimed supervision of curriculum and
degr ee-granting. H ere he ran into trouble from th e teachers who felt
th ey were th e proper jud ges of th e qualifications of th eir students. They
demanded th e right to grant th e degree.
The modern commenc em ent ceremony represents a compromise between the Bishop and the teaching masters. By 1200 the masters were
jud ging the merits of th e student and then recommending him to the
Bishop who conferred the degree. The ceremony you will witness this
morning is th e successor to this medieval compromise. The Faculty sits
on the platform in its role as teacher and examiner . Its leaders, the Deans,
present the qualified candidat es to the Chancellor, acting as executive
officer of the Board. Today the Chancellor and th e Board act , as did the
medieval Bishop when, acting tog ether, th ey grant accreditation upon
th e student's completion of th e Faculty's requirements.

A Note on Academic Dress
The academic dress worn by Faculty and candidates indicates the degree
held, the subject in which it is held, and th e institution granting it. Gowns
are of three kinds: the Bachelor's with full, pointed sleeves, hanging
open; the Maste r's with flowin g sleeves uihicli hang below the opening
at th e wrist; the Doctor's with oer i; full sleeves gathered at th e wrist. The
gowns are black, although occasionally trimmed with colored velvet; the
hoods, on the other hand , are of many colors. Th e color of the lining of
the hood indicates the institution granting the degree: e.g., the hood of
Washington University is lined with red and green. Th e color of the tassel
on the cap and of th e velvet edging of th e hood, carried forward around
the thr oat, indicates the division of the university:
White-Arts, Letters, Humanities
Orange-En gineering
Lilac- Dentistry
Silver Beige-Business
Dark Blue -Philosophy
Brown-Fine Arts , Architecture,
Interior D esign
Golden Yellow-Science
Purple-Law
Green-Medicine
Pink-Musi c
Citron-Social Work
Light Blue-Education
Gold tassels and black tassels, when worn , indicate degree rather than
faculty or maior department. Thus gold indi cates the Ph.D. degree and
black indicates the Master's degree.
Academic dress markedly diff erent from the above description indicates
a degree from a foreign university.
Banners
In addition to the coloring present in the academic dress, the division is
also represented on the Unive rsity's Commencement banners. These
banners are carried by a student marshal at the head of the procession
for their division. Th ey were designed by Louis M iksicek, a graduate of
W ashington Unicersitu's Fine Arts School, in 1974, and custom-made by
a St. Louis firm. You will note that th e lower section of the banner is
red and green, the University's colors, and that th e up per section, which
bears the seal of the Unive rsity, is the color of th e academic division.

DOCTOR
OF SCIENCE
PHILIP MILLS ARNOLD, executive, researcher and scholar, retired in 1976 as vice
president for research and development of Phillips Petroleum Company after nearly
forty years with the company. Most of his career was spent in scientific research.
He played a major role in the company's entry into the chemical industry, in which
it rapidly became a major producer of synthetic rubber, plastics, fibers and fertilizers.
He holds twenty-two patents. A member of the National Academy of Engineering
since 1970, Mr. Arnold also has been active on the National Research Council. He
served on the Executive Committee of its Division of Chemistry and Chemical
Technology and on its committee on Scholarly Communication with the Peoples'
Republic of China. While his professional life has been devoted to science and
technology, his avocation has been study in the humanities. Mr. Arnold reads widely
in several languages. A student of semeiology-the study of man's use of signs and
symbols-vMr. Arnold has explored the history of communications, from efforts to
relate through universal languages and alphabets, to systems to conceal, specifically,
codes and ciphers. He founded and supported over the years the Philip Mills Arnold
Semeiology Collection at Olin Library, which now contains over 2,300 rare books,
journals and manuscripts. Mr . Arnold earned a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1932 and a master of science degree in chemical engineering in
1941 from Washington University. In 1968 he was recognized at Founders Day
with an Alumni Citation from the Washington University Board of Governors.
DR. ROSALYN S. YALOW, nuclear physicist and researcher, shared the Nobel Prize in
physiology or medicine in 1977, the first woman to be so honored since the late
Dr. Gerty Cori of Washington University in 1947. The award was given for the
development of radioimmunoassay (RIA) , a method using radioactive substances to
detect and measure hormones in body fluids. Dr. Yalow and the late Dr. Solomon
A. Berson first used the procedure to demonstrate that adult diabetics do not have
an absolute deficiency of insulin but fail to respond appropriately to its presence.
RIA has since been widely employed by clinical diagnosticians and biomedical inv~stig~tors to measure hundreds of substances, including hormones, viruses, enzymes,
vitamins and drugs. Dr. Yalow has spent nearly her entire career at the Veterans
Administration Medical Center, Bronx, New York, where she is Senior Medical Investigator and Director of the Solomon A. Berson Research Laboratory. She is also
Distinguished Professor-at-Large, Albert Einstein College of Medicine Yeshiva University, and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Sciences, Montefiore Medical
Center, Bronx, New York. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and
the recipient of 28 honorary doctorates and numerous other honors. Dr. Yalow received a bachelor of arts degree in physics and chemistry, Hunter College, and
master of SCIence and doctor of philosophy degrees in physics, University of IllinoisUrbana.
