Mark Calderon, a native of McAllen, Texas, initially trained in gymnastics, trampoline,
and tumbling, under coach Bob Reed. He started out at a local community center and
then moved to the Boys Club in McAllen. Although Mark’s initial training was in allaround gymnastics as well as trampoline and tumbling, he exceled in trampoline and

competitions. He placed second at the 1978 World Age-Group Games in Honolulu,
Hawaii.
At the age of 16, he qualified for the USA Men’s Trampoline Team for the first time and
represented the United States at four World Championships from 1980-1986. At the
1982 World Championships, Mark won the Men’s World Synchronized Trampoline title
with Stuart Ransom.
In June 2012, the USA Gymnastics organization honored him at the US Men’s and
Women’s Gymnastics Olympic Team qualifying meet in San Jose, CA, by inducting him
into the USA Gymnastics Hall Of Fame. The following year, in September 2013, he was
honored once again and inducted as a Legend of Acrobatics by the World Acrobatics
Society.
Mark earned a NROTC scholarship and attended the University of Texas at Austin from
1988-1992 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. Upon
graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy in August 1992. He
received his Naval Aviator “Wings of Gold” in September 1995 and flew the P-3C Orion
anti-submarine warfare aircraft. He served at total of 24.5 years on active duty and
retired in September 2013 at the rank of Commander. He now works as a Southwest

SERVICE TO YOUTH
AWARD
The Service to Youth Award is presented to the person(s) who
does not serve as a gymnastics coach or program director. Their
service is for a significant period of years, touching the lives of
many children.
2014 SERVICE TO YOUTH AWARD
PRESENTED TO:
MELANIE CRYER
22
Melanie first fell in love with gymnastics in 1976 as she
watched (along with the rest of the world) Nadia Comaneci’s
memorable Olympic performance. She went on to graduate
from SHSU in 1983 with a secondary teaching certification in
English and psychology and then taught English at Humble
High School.
In 1994, Melanie officially became a “gym mom” when her
middle daughter began competitive gymnastics. When her son
followed suit in 1996, Melanie travelled many a mile and sat
on many uncomfortable bleachers to support her children’s
successes in the sport for the next 14 years.
Melanie received her judging certification in 1997 and after
assisting as a recreational coach for several years, she became
the preschool gymnastics director at Rowland/Ballard from
2004-2011. During that time, she won a contest sponsored by
Patti Komara and had several of her creative lesson plans published in “Preschool Theme Lesson Plans from Across the
USA.”
These days, she is happily fostering her son’s dog while he
serves in the U.S. Army, and she is a very involved volunteer
with both women and 4 year-olds in different programs at her
church. Her husband would like to add that she is the luckiest
woman in the world because she is married to him.
Melanie currently serves as the treasurer for the Houston
Women’s Gymnastics Judges Association, still loves gymnastics, and is incredibly humbled to be the recipient of this
award.

SERVICE TO YOUTH
AWARD
The Service to Youth Award is presented to the person(s) who does
not serve as a gymnastics coach or program director. Their service

2014 SERVICE TO YOUTH AWARD
PRESENTED TO:
LOREN DILL, NORBERTS
24
From its inception, Norbert's Athletic Products, Inc. has been
acutely aware of Texas' huge impact on all aspects of gymnastics. Without limitation, we respect and applaud the Lone Star
State's legion of organizations, coaches and athletes and their
myriad accomplishments at all levels of competition. From the
beginning we made a concerted effort to ensure Texans a
source of top-quality, yet very affordable mats and equipment
we manufacture here in the USA. We participate in competitive
bidding to contract with many Texas public institutions and
work closely with private entities and individuals throughout
your great state.
We proudly consider Texas to be our other home state and truly cherish our close relationship with your gymnastics community overall, foremost among them your Gymnastic Association
of Texas.
When Norbert Dill, who founded our company, first attended
GAT's 1994 Convention, he was overwhelmed by how warmly
he was welcomed by GAT attendees who not only placed orders but also expressed support and appreciation for this firsttime vendor.
Over the ensuing two decades, Norbert's has been honored to
participate in, exhibit at, and contribute to GAT's annual convention. Yours is unique in that it is a thoroughly enjoyable
event, one we truly and wholeheartedly anticipate. It's so
much so, in fact, that we are actually pleased to donate equipment for your auctions, offer discounted prices to those who
purchase products (in advance of the exhibit as well as while
we are in the hall) and, most recently, sponsor GAT's Ceremony of Honor event.
25
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
AWARD
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a
person(s) who has given outstanding recent service to the
gymnastics development and gymnastics programs in Texas.
2014 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
PRESENTED TO:
KEVIN MUENZ
26
Kevin started his journey into the world of gymnastics, at the age of 12,
as manager of a high school gymnastics team in Yorktown Heights, New
York. The following year, the family moved to the suburbs of Chicago, a
hot bed for high school gymnastics, where he attended John Hersey
High School, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. As a high school gymnast, he
helped his team win the state championship and placed 2nd in the all
around behind Bart Conner. During his senior year, he was invited to
the first Olympic development camp held by the then USGF in Lincoln,
Nebraska, and placed 3rd at the first ever National High School All
Around Invitational in Chicago, Illinois. A college scholarship led him to
Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, under the direction of
Coach Bill Meade. As a college gymnast, Kevin was a member of the
USGF National Men’s Team and received the bronze medal on pommel
horse at the USGF National Championships in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After graduating from SIU-C with a degree in Education, Kevin
worked on his Masters in Biomechanics and Physiology of Exercise and
helped Coach Meade with the gymnastics team. The experience with
Meade planted the seeds for Kevin to venture into the world of coaching. Coach Muenz moved to Garland, Texas in 1982 and is still coaching
at Lakeview Centennial High School. During this time, his teams have
won 5 high school state championships; he has been honored 3 times by
the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association as their Coach of
the Year and in 1991 he was awarded the prestigious National High
School Coach of the Year award. Kevin’s gymnasts have won numerous
state, regional and national titles at the high school and club levels.
Resently, Kevin has served as the USA Gymnastics men’s state chairman. He has also been a nationally certified judge for over 26 years and
an officer in the THSGCA for over 20 years. Kevin admits that none of
this could have been possible without the loving support of his wife
Debbie and their 3 children.
27

AWARD
The Life Member Award is presented
to the person(s) who have given a
long period of outstanding service
and accomplishment to the sport of
gymnastics in Texas.
