Barrie Houlihan, Loughborough University, UK
Series: Routledge Library Editions Sports Studies
When originally published in 1991 this was the first book to tackle the UK policy process
of sport and to provide a political science analysis of some of the key issues facing sports
administrators today. The volume identifies the parties involved: central government, local
government, the Sports Council, the Central Council of Physical Recreation, and the
individual sports governing bodies. It examines their effect on sport’s policy and
administration through an analysis of three important current sport issues – football
hooliganism, drug abuse among athletes and sport opportunities and facilities for school
children.

An International Review
A fundamental component of the ‘Olympic ideal’ is the concept of ‘Olympic education’.
This is the notion that sport can help children and young people develop essential life
skills; that the development of motor abilities, social behaviour and a moral sense can be
developed through the teaching of sport and Olympic values. This is the first book to offer
a comprehensive survey and analysis of the diffusion, implementation and delivery of
Olympic education programmes around the world. The book includes national case studies
from every major continent, with each chapter examining the cultural, pedagogical, political
and societal challenges of teaching Olympic education.

Soccer, Culture and Identity in Spain
Sport and Politics
An Ethnography of Basque Fandom
Mariann Vaczi, University of Nevada, US
Series: Routledge Critical Studies in Sport
The relationship between soccer, culture and national identity in Spain is complex. This
fascinating study shines new light on Spanish soccer and identity politics by examining
the role that soccer plays in Basque identity, consolidated in Athletic Club of Bilbao, the
century-old soccer club located in the birthplace of Basque nationalism. Based on unique,
in-depth ethnographic research, and drawing on social history, anthropology, political
science and sociology, the book investigates how a soccer club and soccer fandom affect
the life of a community, exploring key contemporary themes in the social sciences such
as identity construction and local-global processes, and placing the study in the wider
context of Spanish political and sporting cultures.
Alan Bairner, Loughborough University, UK
Series: Frontiers of Sport
This book begins with three main propositions – that politicians
use sport, that sport reflects political conditions, and that sport
itself contributes to political culture for good or for ill. Against
this background Sport and Politics explores the key points of
interaction between the two. With fascinating case studies
woven throughout, this book is the perfect introduction to an

covers issues such as soccer hooliganism , government intervention in sport, and the
influence of television on sport.

The Roots of Football Hooliganism (RLE Sports
Studies)
Sport, Leisure and Social Relations (RLE Sports
Studies)
An Historical and Sociological Study
Edited by John Horne, University of Central Lancashire, UK, David Jary and Alan
Tomlinson, University of Brighton, UK
Series: Routledge Library Editions Sports Studies
Eric Dunning, Patrick J. Murphy and John Williams
Series: Routledge Library Editions Sports Studies
This systematic historical and sociological study of the phenomenon of football hooliganism
examines the history of crowd disorderliness at association football matches in Britain and
assesses both popular and academic explanations of the problem. The authors’ study starts
in the 1880s, when professional football first emerged in its modern form, charting the pre
and inter-war periods and revealing that England’s World Cup triumph formed a watershed.
The changing social composition of football crowds and the changing class structure of
British society is discussed and the genesis of modern football hooliganism is explained
by tracing it to the cultural conditions and circumstances which reproduce in young
working-class males an interest in a publicly expressed aggressive masculine style.

When this book was first published the study of sport had been largely neglected by
sociologists. The contributions to this volume bring the sports field, the leisure centre and
everyday leisure activities to a more central position within the sociological enterprise.
Whether amateur or professional, sport contributes to wider relations of power, privilege
and domination and this debate represents an important phase in the sociology of sport
and leisure.

Hooligans Abroad (RLE Sports Studies)
The Behaviour and Control of English Fans in Continental Europe
Class, Race and Sport in South Africa’s Political
Economy (RLE Sports Studies)
John M. Williams, Eric Dunning and Patrick J. Murphy
Series: Routledge Library Editions Sports Studies
Grant Jarvie, University of Edinburgh, UK
Series: Routledge Library Editions Sports Studies
This book traces international developments in the hooligan phenomenon since the Heysel
tragedy of 1985. The authors make special reference to the troubled European
championships in West Germany in 1988 and look critically at political responses to the
problem. The authors used ‘participant observation’ in their research on British fans at the
World Cup in Spain, and at matches in Rotterdam and Copenhagen, and capture the
authentic voice of football hooliganism in their interviews.
In recent years the interest in the patterns and policies of South African sport has grown.
This book examines the increasingly complex issue of race, class and sport in the context
of South African social relations. The author disputes evaluations made purely on the
question of race, maintaining that it is important to examine the complex interaction
between racial and class dynamics as a background for understanding the South African
way of life. The book demonstrates that sport must be understood in the context of the
ensemble of social relations characterizing the South African social formation. Although
published some years ago, the book is as relevant now as it was, especially in the light of
Nelson Mandela's social and political legacy and his influence on South Africa sport.

Edited by Jennifer Hargreaves, independent scholar, UK
Series: Routledge Library Editions Sports Studies
Various
Series: Routledge Library Editions Sports Studies
Sport celebrates basic human values of freedom, justice and courage. This collection of
essays probes beneath those assumptions in order to illuminate how sport is intimately
related to power and domination. Topics include the media treatment of sport, drug-taking
in sport and the controversial and problematic relationship between sport and politics in
Russia and South Africa.
This set examines sport and leisure from a social science viewpoint. The volumes included,
originally published between 1984 and 1991 take a cross-disciplinary approach to explore
the social, political and cultural roles of sport in today's society. They cover issues as diverse
as inequality, nationalism, gender, and commercialisation and engage with a range of
academic disciplines including cultural studies, history, politics and sociology.

Narrative Immunity
Deb Waterhouse-Watson, Monash University, Australia
Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society
This book details how popular conceptions of masculinity and
femininity inform the way footballers’ bodies, team bonding,
women, sex and alcohol are portrayed in the media, and
connects stories relating to the cases with sports reporting
generally. Uncovering similar patterns of narrative, grammar and
discourse across these distinct yet related fields,
Waterhouse-Watson shows how these discourses are naturalised,
with reports on the cases intertwining with broader discourses
of football reporting to provide immunity. The book also
examines attempts to counter rape myths, articulating successful
strategies and elucidating the limitations built into journalistic
practices and language itself.

In critical sport studies, the place of animals has been a relatively
minor field of inquiry. Much of this research has addressed
animals with regard to gambling, via studies of horse racing.
Increasingly, however, "riding the animal studies wave," sport
studies researchers are looking more extensively at interspecies
relations and taking up topics connected to Posthumanism. In
this book, contributors offer the first comprehensive overview
of the implications of this new field for sports studies, exploring
subjects including the horse-rider relationship, the marketing
of professional rodeo, the ethics of the sport of dog agility, and
many more.

We live in a "museum age," and sport museums are part of this
phenomenon. In this book, leading international sport history
scholars examine sport museums including renowned
institutions like the Olympic Museum in the Swiss city of
Lausanne, the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum in Baltimore,
the Marylebone Cricket Club Museum in London, the Croke Park
Museum in Dublin, and the Whyte Museum in Banff. These
institutions are examined in a broad context of understanding
sport museums as an identifiable genre in the "museum age,"
and more specifically in terms of how the sporting past is
represented in these museums. Historians explain, debate and critique sport museums
with the intention of understanding how this important form of public history represents
sport for audiences who see museums as institutions that are inherently reliable and
trustworthy.

the study of serious leisure, casual leisure and project-based leisure, it is an invaluable tool
for exploring the significance of leisure in contemporary society. This book is the first

Sport in Capitalist Society
Sport and the Physical Emancipation of English
Women (RLE Sports Studies)
A Short History
Tony Collins, De Montfort University, UK
Sport in Capitalist Society is a new, radical history of sport by
leading social historian, Professor Tony Collins. It is the first
sustained attempt to explain the emergence of modern sport
around the world as an integral part of the globalisation of
capitalism. Tracing the history of modern sport from its origins
in the burgeoning capitalist economy of mid-eighteenth century
England to the globalised corporate sport of today, Collins argues
that, far from the purity of sport being ‘corrupted’ by capitalism,
modern sport is as much a product of capitalism as the factory,
the stock exchange and the unemployment line. Based on
original sources, this is essential reading for anybody with an
interest in the history or sociology of sport, or the social and
cultural history of the modern world.

The latter part of the nineteenth century saw a significant participation in sports by women,
and this book provides the first overall examination of this early development and the
social changes that it helped to bring about.
Since women’s entry into sports was chiefly a consequence of the campaign for better
female education, the book begins with an account of sports at the Oxbridge women’s
colleges, at the girls' public schools and at the new women’s physical training colleges. It
then examines team sports such as hockey, lacrosse, and cricket and individual sports such
as tennis, golf and cycling. Other chapters discuss the medical attitudes and prejudices
toward women’s participation in sports and the role of sports in changing female dress.

Making Sport History
Cricket and Empire (RLE Sports Studies)
Disciplines, identities and the historiography of sport
The 1932-33 Bodyline Tour of Australia
Edited by Pascal Delheye
Series: Routledge Research in Sports History
Ric Sissons and Brian Stoddart
Series: Routledge Library Editions Sports Studies
Making Sport History examines the development of an academic community around sport
history, exploring the roots of the discipline, its current boundaries, borders and challenges,
and looking ahead at future prospects. Written by a team of world-leading sport historians
the book presents new perspectives on what constitutes sport history and its core
methodologies, the book helps explain why historians have become interested in sport,
why they’ve chosen the topics they have, and how their work has influenced the wider
world of history. Thisis essential reading for any advanced student, scholar or researcher
with an interest in sport history.
A great depression, worsening Anglo-Australian relations, the declining British Empire and
the challenge from an Australia striving to find a national identity are the context which
explain bodyline and its repercussions. Bodyline was a watershed in the history of cricket
and politics was publicly seen as part of sport. This book offers a radical reappraisal of
bodyline which challenges the official interpretations of the events, and places them in a
unique social and political context.

A Social History of Tennis in Britain
Sports History
Robert Lake, Wilfred Laurier University, Canada
Series: Routledge Research in Sports History
Edited by Wray Vamplew, University of Stirling, UK
Series: Critical Concepts in Sports Studies
From the palace courts of Henry VIII to the perennial failures of British players on
Wimbledon’s Centre Court, the history of tennis in Britain reflects important themes in
Britain’s social history. In the first comprehensive, critical account of the history of tennis
in Britain, Robert Lake explains how the game’s historical roots have shaped its contemporary
structure, and how the history of tennis can tell us much about the history of wider British
society. The history of British tennis is the history of class conflict, of female emancipation,
the struggle for racial integration, the decline of empire and Britain’s shifting relationship
with the US, Australia and Europe. This book is fascinating reading for anybody with an
interest in the history of sport or British social history.
Once winners started to be recorded Sports History began.
Academic Sports History, however, was much longer in coming
and there was no concerted productivity in the field till the
1970s. Two strands developed: one out of Physical Education
whose practitioners mainly saw Sports History as facts and stories
about past performances; the other started by historians and
focusing on the social—matters of gender, ethnicity, identity,
and class. Now a well-established discipline, Sports History is
studied throughout the world. This new four-volume collection

Routledge Handbook of the Philosophy of Sport
Philosophy and the Martial Arts
Edited by Mike McNamee, University of Swansea, UK and William J Morgan, University
of Southern California, US
Series: Routledge International Handbooks
Edited by Graham Priest, University of Melbourne, Australia
and Damon Young, University of Melbourne, Australia
Series: Ethics and Sport
The Routledge Handbook of the Philosophy of Sport is a landmark publication in sport studies.
It goes further than any other book in tracing the contours of the discipline of the philosophy
of sport and the core themes, approaches and theories that form its disciplinary fabric. The
book explores the ways in which an understanding of philosophy can inform our
understanding of important prevailing issues in sport, such as doping and violence, and
examines the interface between the philosophy of sport and other disciplines in sports
research and practice, including management, coaching, politics and education. With
original contributions from many of the world’s leading sport philosophers, this is an
invaluable companion reference volume for any course in the social scientific study of
sport,
In both occidental and oriental traditions, philosophers have
long treated the martial arts as pursuits worthy of philosophical
reflection. This is the first substantial academic book to lay out
the philosophical terrain within the study and understanding
of the martial arts and to explore the significance of this
fascinating subject for contemporary philosophy. The essays in
this collection deal with a wide range of philosophical issues:
normative ethics, meta-ethics, aesthetics, phenomenology, the
philosophy of mind, Ancient Greek and Buddhist thought. By
demonstrating the very real nature of the engagement between the martial arts and
philosophy, this book is essential reading for any serious student or scholar with an interest
in the martial arts, Eastern philosophy, the philosophy of sport, or the study of physical
culture.

Talent development has become an important issue in contemporary sport. This innovative
and original study offers a philosophical alternative to conventional instrumental approaches
to talent development, filling a gap between realist (skill acquisition), idealist (mental
training) and social (communities of practice) interpretations. In the process, it explores
new ways of encouraging sporting talent to develop independently of outside influence.
Deepening our understanding of performance and development in sport, and the process
of learning to be an elite player, this book is important reading for any serious student or
researcher working in the philosophy of sport, sports coaching, sports development, sport
psychology or applied sport science.

Rethinking Drug Use in Sport
Why the war will never be won
Bob Stewart, Victoria University, Australia and Aaron Smith,
RMIT, Australia
Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society
Drug free sport is an unattainable aspiration. In this critical,
paradigm-shifting reappraisal of contemporary drug policy in
sport, Bob Stewart and Aaron Smith argue that drug use in sport
is an inexorable consequence of the nature, structure and culture
of sport itself. While there are no simple solutions, as long as
drug use is endemic in wider society the authors argue that a
more nuanced and progressive approach is required in order to
safeguard and protect the health, social liberty and best interests
of athletes and sports people, as well as the value of sport itself.

Touch in Sports Coaching and Physical Education
Fear, Risk and Moral Panic
Edited by Heather Piper, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK
Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society
In our risk-averse society, touch and touching behaviours between professionals and
children have become a fraught issue. In sports coaching and physical education, touching
young sports performers and participants has, in some contexts, come to be redefined as
dubious and dangerous. This is the first book to explore this difficult topic in detail. Drawing
on a series of international studies from the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Sweden and elsewhere,
it presents important new research evidence and examines theories of risk and moral panic
that frame the discussion. By challenging prevailing orthodoxies it makes a significant
contribution to critical discussion around practice, pedagogy, politics and policy in sport

Mentoring in Physical Education and Sports
Coaching
Understanding Primary Physical Education
Edited by Fiona C. Chambers, University College Cork, Republic of Ireland
In order to become a more effective practitioner every teacher needs to have a sound
understanding of the theoretical, social and historical context in which their work takes
place. Understanding Primary Physical Education goes further than any other textbook in
exploring the development of physical education teaching at the primary and elementary
level, drawing together important research from across the educational and sociological
literature. It encourages students, trainee teachers and researchers to develop a critical
understanding of policy, process and practice in primary physical education, challenging
casual assumptions and encouraging a better, more thoughtful teaching practice.
Mentoring is a core element of any successful teacher education or coach education
programme, with evidence suggesting that teachers and coaches who are mentored early
in their careers likely to become more effective practitioners. This is the first book to
introduce key theory and best practice in mentoring, for mentors and mentees, focusing
on the particular challenges and opportunities in physical education and sports coaching.
Written by a team of international experts with practical experience of mentoring in PE
and coaching, the book clearly explains what mentoring is and how it should work,
illustrated with real mentoring stories, practical guidance and definitions of key terms.

Routledge Handbook of Youth Sport
Teaching Tactical Creativity in Sport
Edited by Andy Smith, Edge Hill University, UK and Ken Green, University of Chester,
UK
Series: Routledge International Handbooks
Research and Practice
Drawing on a wide diversity of disciplines, including sociology, psychology, policy studies,
coaching, physical education and physiology, this comprehensive survey of young people’s
involvement in sport focuses on a key transitional period of our lives, from the later teenage
years into the early twenties. Covering youth sport in all its forms, from competitive
game-contests and conventional sport to recreational activities, exercise and lifestyle sport,
and at all levels, from elite competition to leisure and school physical education, it also
explores youth sport across the world, in developing and developed countries, and touches
on some of the most significant themes in contemporary sport studies, including physical
activity and health, lifelong participation, and talent development.
Creativity is an essential component of sport performance. The player that can make
decisions that are both unexpected and appropriate is the player that is likely to be
successful. This groundbreaking book introduces a new theoretical framework for tactical
creativity based on extensive empirical research. It argues for the importance of encouraging
divergent thinking abilities at an early age and explains how tactical creativity sits alongside
conventional approaches to ‘teaching games for understanding’. The book outlines essential
rules for environmental and training conditions, and suggests a wide range of game forms
for teaching and coaching tactical creativity to children and young people.

As sport has become more intense, professional and
commercialized, debate has grown about what constitutes
acceptable behaviour and fair play. How can we encourage and
develop ‘good’ sporting behaviour, particularly in children and
young people? This book explores the nature and function of

TEXTBOOK
There remains considerable debate about the definition of fatigue, its impact during different
forms of exercise, and the best methods are to combat it. This is the first student-focused
book to survey the contemporary research evidence into exercise-induced fatigue and to
discuss how knowledge of fatigue can be applied in sport and exercise contexts. It
introduces the fundamental science, covering physiological, psychological, biomechanical
and neuromuscular aspects, and explores key topics such as energy depletion, lactic acid,
dehydration, and perception of fatigue. This is an invaluable companion for any course in
exercise physiology, fitness and training, or strength and conditioning.
