Message from the Principal
Although we are well into the 2015/16
school year, I want to take this
opportunity to welcome our new
students and their families to Mission
Viejo High School as well as to
welcome back all of our returning
Diablos families. By the time you
receive this edition of the winter
newsletter, students will just be
returning from the holiday recess.
While we have only been in session for
approximately four short months, our
phenomenal students have been hard
at work bringing home several
outstanding accomplishments.
First, we are extremely excited and
proud that our varsity football team
won the CIF West Valley Division
Championship for the second year in
a row and then went on to win
Mission’s first ever Division IAA State
CIF Football Championship. The final
game was played at Sacramento State
University in the pouring rain. The
team finished an incredible season
with a perfect 16-0 record.
Congratulations to our football team,
Coach Johnson and to the entire
coaching staff for this wonderful
accomplishment! A big thank you to
members of the pep squad and the
band who braved the cold rain to
1
support our
team.
Next, the
school’s theater
program
garnered yet
another first
place award for
their latest
performance, “The Children’s Hour”.
The production was recognized as the
“Best Theater Performance” in
Orange County. Additionally, the
theater program’s annual food drive,
for the homeless collected over 18 tons
of food, which was a ton more than last
year. Our group was recognized for
raising the largest quantity of food from
any high school theater group in the
entire country. We are very proud of
their efforts.
Once again, the marching band and
color guard came back from the state
championships in Fresno as two of the
highest ranked units. The marching
band ended the season ranked 10th in
the state and the color guard was
ranked 3rd. It is important to note that
our band and color guard compete at
the highest level of competition against
some of the largest instrumental music
programs in California. Congratulations
to our band and color guard members
as well as to Mr. Hannan, Mr.
Meeuwsen and the entire coaching
staff for another outstanding season!

New Faculty and Staff
I want to take this opportunity to introduce and
welcome the new faculty and staff members to
Mission Viejo High School. Mr. Ryan Thurlow (head
coach - boys’ varsity volleyball), Mr. Chris
Culbertson, and Mrs. Karen De Francesca have
joined the special education department. Mr. Chase
Moline (MVHS alum) is teaching mathematics and
serves as an assistant coach for the varsity football
team. Mr. Adam Bishop comes to us from Liberty
High School in Bakersfield and joined our English
department. Mr. Tom Hamilton was added in the
science department and teaches physics. We have
expanded support services for special education
students and families with the addition of a part-time
psychologist, Ms. Hilary Rawlins. Mrs. Mary Ricks
has become part of the counseling department,
replacing Mrs. Gerri Evans who retired late this past
summer. We have added an additional speech and
language therapist, Mrs. Barbara Williams. We also
have a new library media clerk, Mrs. Pam Takamiya
as well as a new computer analyst, Mr. Daniel
Kuhlman. Daniel is diligently working to keep our
technology operational. Finally, Mr. Michael Ciecek
joined our administrative team and serves as the
assistant principal overseeing 9th and 10th grade
supervision, business and facilities. Mr. Ciecek was
formerly an assistant principal at El Toro High School
and at the Orange County School of the Arts in
Santa Ana.
On a different note, I want to say good bye to Mrs.
Pam Stanfield, long time ASB accounts clerk who is
retiring after 21 years at the school. We will miss her
and wish her well in retirement.
Additionally, if you have been on the campus over
the holidays, you noticed that we have started an
extensive solar energy project. The District is adding
solar panels in the parking areas on all of the high
school campuses as well as over the District office
parking lot. When the solar project is complete,
Mission will be able to provide up to 75% of our
energy needs with renewable solar energy. It is
important to note that during the solar project
construction, which is expected to run through the
remainder of this school year, everyone should
expect inconveniences as it relates to parking.
When the solar project is complete,
Mission will be able to provide up to
75% of our energy needs with
renewable solar energy.
School Choice Intra-district Transfer Timeline
Please note that the School Choice application
window for secondary students for the 2016/17
school year opens on Monday, January 4 and goes
through February 5, 2016. All applications must be
submitted to the district office by February 5, 2016. If
you have questions about school choice, please refer

Mission

Quarter
Awards were
given to
Alexa
Cadena,
Emily
Gamboa,
and Keiana
Snell. Our
Assistant Principal, Mr. Mike Ciecek was the presenter.
Alexa Cadena was recognized for her accomplishments in
the English Language Learner Program. She is a true
example of taking advantage of every opportunity that is
presented to achieve success. Alexa has quickly achieved a
command of the English Language after arriving to Mission
from Mexico only one year ago. Her hard work has paid off
in becoming a celebrated member of the Principal’s Honor
Roll. Alexa hopes to someday become an accomplished
lawyer.
Emily Gamboa was recognized for her accomplishments in
the Agricultural Science Program. Emily is an active awardwinning member of the Mission Viejo FFA chapter, and
volunteers countless hours on the school farm, while also
taking time out of her own schedule to assist with various
livestock projects in both the 4-H and the FFA. Emily is also
passionate about playing guitar and writing music, which
she hopes to eventually achieve her goal of becoming a
musician, artist, and songwriter.
Keiana Snell was recognized for her hard work and
dedication within the MUN program at Mission Viejo High
School. Keiana stays busy in the International Baccalaureate
and MUN Programs at Mission, and can often be found
organizing monthly beach cleanups through her Life’s a
Beach club, or volunteering in San Diego teaching children
to surf. Keiana hopes to transition her passion for
international relations into a college major and career at
UCLA, Berkeley, or Georgetown University.
ASB would like to take a moment to thank everyone who donated to the American Red Cross blood drive last
week. We collected 59 units, potentially resulting in helping save up to 177 lives!!!! This is fantastic
and would not have been possible without the support of the entire MVHS community. Extra thanks to all of
the teachers that were flexible and understanding in allowing students to miss class for this important event.
If you happen to have Hannah Butterbaugh, Brett Machock or Connor Webster (the ASB organizers of the
event) in class please, take a moment to congratulate them on a successful event. Because of the great turn out
of volunteers we had last week, looking forward to the Spring
blood drive, the American Red Cross will be sending extra staff to
help cut down the wait time, and hopefully result in even more
donations.
Thanks again for all of your support!

Mission for the Armed Forces
Mission Viejo High School
September 18, 2015
Mission Armed Forces (MAF) celebrated 72 Veterans, those currently serving to those From WWII. We also honored this 8 GOLD
STAR Families, these are families who have lost a family member while serving our country.
We were very fortunate this year to have Mr. Larry Ross back with us. He was able to bring MVHS the Sea to Shining Sea Flag
which was unfurled on the football field by the Freshmen Team at the beginning of the game to the National Anthem. The Field
of Flags, which represents those who lost their lives on Sept -11 was also erected by ASB and classes from Susie Daher and Kathy
Harris in front of the MVHS theater.
The Varsity players wore uniforms designed especially for the MAF game. The player wore the name of the Veteran or Gold Star
family that he was playing for on the back of his jersey. The honorees also received a replica jersey with the players number on
it, that was presented to them during dinner prior to the game. JV Players helped with the Honorees and their guest during dinner and the game, helping them to the stadium, getting dessert and coffees and whatever else they needed.
ASB and Cheer made a tunnel for the Vets to go thru at the beginning of the game, they loved this part, getting the cheers and
high fives! Some of our honorary Team Captains were, Howard Bender, WWII Pearl Harbor survivor, Becca Ring graduate of
MVHS representing her husband Chris Ring with Legacies Alive, Carlos Torres and Nico Marcolongo representing Operation Rebound. Band and Choir performed the National Anthem and a half time performed all the anthems from the different branches
of service. Our Veterans and their Varsity player were introduced to a stadium of fans at the end of the game.
A big thanks to our sponsors we could
not have done this without them!
Thank you so much. We, the veterans, are most appreciative.
The MV football event was most spectacular. So many young
people are totally unaware of the sacrifice made by a multitude
of veterans and families of veterans who sacrificed so much to
gain and maintain the God-given freedoms we all enjoy. But
Patty, you and Coach Johnson and the rest of your team have
given our youth the advantage of appreciating the gift they have
received.

The veterans of this neighborhood are immensely appreciative of
the honor you have bestowed upon all of us, plus the awareness
you have instilled in the outstanding youth of the MV school
district. The demonstration provided by the Cheer Leaders, JV
team, Varsity, Coaches, etc., was truly heart-warming.

Mission Viejo High School’s Choral Music Program was officially
named a 2016 Grammy Signature Schools Semifinalist. There were 15
schools total in California and 9 in Orange County that were named semifinalists in the nationwide program. I would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate Sarah Norris for bringing this recognition to our school.
We will learn sometime in March whether MVHS is selected as a finalist
in the Grammy Signature Schools Program.
Congratulation MVHS Choral Music Program!

"The Children's
Hour" has won the
Orange County Area
Best Play (our score
was 99.067) by the
California
Educational Theatre
Association and will
be continuing on January 15-17th to perform at Plummer
Auditorium in Fullerton. We will be remounting the entire
set and play to perform for schools in Southern California
and compete against Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San
Diego County. What is amazing is that this is our 2nd
consecutive win! I am very proud of the performers and
tech students who worked on this difficult piece of theatre
to create a very realistic set and serious play about bullies
and lies.

ROP CLASSES I’VE TAKEN:
AUTO TECHNOLOGY and
MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING
TECHNOLOGY - Beginning & Advanced
(This MET class meets Tues/Thurs or
Mon/Wed from 3:30-6:30 at THHS in their
state-of-the art Haas Technical Education
Center)
WHAT I’VE LEARNED:
Students use a computer (CNC) to tell a machine what to do. Specifically, telling the
machine to carve metal pieces into mechanical parts. We also used a lathe, learned how
to check products for quality control and
learned to read blueprints.
MY CAREER PLANS:
I have already been hired part-time by West
Coast Engineering in Garden Grove! I met
this employer during my summer advanced
MET class where he was a guest speaker. I
currently work 10 hours a week while in
high school and will work more hours once I
graduate. West Coast will pay for me to
take machining classes at Santa Ana College and will raise my pay by $1/hour for
every class I complete with a “B” or better
grade. I’m excited about my future!

Student Tutorial Guidelines
Students must attend a tutorial every day.
Tutorials occur every day except on Late Start
Mondays and on a Minimum School Day. The twenty
six minute tutorial period takes place after the quick
snack break.
(Note: Failure to arrive to a tutorial on time will result in
an automatic 4 Hour Saturday School.)
Students must attend the tutorial of one of their
current teacher’s classes.
Any exceptions to this policy will be made by individual
teachers.
Students must come prepared to work during
every tutorial.
Remember, tutorial is not a social time and should be

thank you to the Faculty and Staff that hosted a donation
box in their room/office and all of you that encouraged
