FIVE WONDERFUL YEARS!
In the past five years, we’ve
covered two trips to the top of
Mount Everest, three trips across
the United States (two from west
to east and one north to south)
and several trips across the state
(on bicycles, feet, skateboards
and big wheels). We’ve covered
both winners and our own biggest
losers, many of whom now inspire
others to lose. We’ve introduced
foods that keep us healthy and
exercises to keep us strong. We’ve
covered events and activities of all
types, from curling to ice skating, from skiing to snowshoeing and
from swimming to running, cycling and rock climbing.
in our third annual Reader’s Choice Awards.
You, our readers, turned out in droves (voting more than doubled
from 2014) to nominate and vote for your favorite running, cycling
and triathlon events and the people who inspire and train you to be
ready for them.
This year’s awards are filled with people who’ve done great things,
who’ve gone fast or gone far. These are people whose stories are
intertwined with our own as we’ve run, cycled or swam with them.
These awards celebrate Iowa and the best she has to offer and
remind us all why our state is such a great place to live, work and
play. And as Iowa Momentum celebrates its birthday, we, too, are
thankful for you, our readers, our advertisers and our contributors.
You, too, are who make Iowa a great place to be. Q
We’ve been with Iowans as they give us their best, whether at the
front of the field or at the back as they accomplish the life-long
dream of finishing their chosen event. We’ve watched as our own
have risen to the top of the world’s stage or walked across the finish
line in memory of a loved one.
This month we not only celebrate our fifth year, we celebrate the
people, places and events that make this state a great place to live

news bits
Hy-Vee pulls out of Labor Day triathlon.
In an email sent to previous triathletes, Hy-Vee announced the cancellation
of its namesake triathlon, which was scheduled to be held on Labor Day
weekend this year.
“We want you to be among the first to know that Hy-Vee is
discontinuing the Hy-Vee Triathlon events in 2015,” wrote officials to past
participants. “The decision to discontinue these events was difficult because
they have become premiere events for athletes and an important part of our
company’s history.”
Premier Event Management, the company responsible for organizing the
logistics of the Olympic distance race, has made a commitment to continue
the event in some form. They are considering offering both a sprint and
olympic distance choice for triathletes and are currently seeking sponsors of
the event.
Hy-Vee is now planning a new event series for both children and their
families, aimed at engaging children of all fitness levels and abilities. The new
series will focus on participation and fundraising instead of competition.

CHOICE
Two new companies have emerged from the
fertile ground of Iowa’s business scene, Cave
Competitor and Capital City Caps.
Cave Competitor, out of West Des Moines, manufactures stands which make
exercising indoors easier and more enjoyable with two different stands that
can sit in front and/or beside you while using an indoor trainer. Complete
with water bottle holders, tabs to hold your computer, tablet or television,
hooks for a towel and space to keep your remote and phone handy, these
stands remove every excuse for indoor training –– even help make it fun.
There is even an optional stand that holds your bike for minor repairs. They
can be ordered online at www.cavecompetitor.com. Capital City Caps grew
out of the sewing machine of a Des Moines cyclist, who saw stylish cycling
caps in old suits at the local thrift shop. Styles for men, women and children
are hand crafted from the wool fabric and other materials repurposed
from old clothing. Caps can be embroidered for a true custom look. A full
selection is available at www.capitalcitycaps.co.

Nearly 1,000 runners braved dropping temperatures and a biting north wind
to tackle a new course at the 26th annual Red Flannel Run, a fundraising
event for the Wellmark YMCA. The new course, taking advantage of the
scenic trails along the river, started and finished at the one-month-old
Wellmark YMCA in downtown Des Moines. Former Drake runner Ben
Jaskowiak won the 5-mile race in a sprint against Scott Johnson of Ames.
Nathan White of Des Moines finished just behind, in third. The top three
runners maintained close to a 5-minute-per-mile pace along the windy
course to finish in 25:12, 25:13 and 25:23 respectively. Des Moines runner
Danna Herrick took the women’s victory in 29:28, finishing more than two
minutes ahead of second-placed Lisa Wegmans 31:46 time. Stephanie
Mortenson was third, finishing in 31:50. Complete results can be found at

SPORTS SUPPLEMENTS: THE REAL DEAL OR A MAGIC PILL?
By Erin Thole, MS, RD, LD
In the world of athletics, the goals of
becoming bigger, stronger, faster, slimmer
or more energized never cease to occur. To
obtain and retain these goals, commitment
to a strict exercise and nutrition plan is
required. However, after months of grueling
training it’s easy to give up hope and reach
for a magic pill. Buyer beware, dietary
supplements that make such claims to help
athletes reach their peak performance do
not have to show effectiveness or safety
before they hit store shelves.
To better understand if those sport
supplements that you spend hundreds of
dollars on are really making a difference,
one needs to learn what the research has to
say:
BETA-ALANINE
Acts as a buffer in the muscle.
Claim: Improve high-intensity exercise
performance.
Evidence: Insufficient evidence to rate
effective.
Dietary source: Lean red meat, fish and
poultry.
BRANCHED CHAIN AMINO ACIDS (BCAA)
Leucine, isoleucine and valine.
Claim: Delay fatigue, boost the immune
system.
Evidence: Can provide fuel for
endurance activity, but has not been shown
to delay fatigue.
Dietary source: Milk (whey), lean red
meat, fish, poultry, eggs, chickpeas, lentils
and whole wheat.
CAFFEINE
Central nervous system stimulant.
Claim: Help burn fat, protect
carbohydrate stores, and improve energy.
Evidence: Increases alertness but does
not appear to increase fat burning or
protect carbohydrate stores during exercise.
Dietary source: Cocoa beans, coffee,
tea leaves and kola nuts.
CARNITINE
Found in muscles and used for energy
production.
Claim: Helps to burn fat.
Evidence: Does not increase fat
burning.
Dietary source: Lean red meat, fish,
poultry, and milk (whey).
12
March 2015
CREATINE
Found in muscles and used for energy
production.
Claim: Increase lean body mass,
strength and improve exercise performance
(high-intensity).
Evidence: Positive results for increasing
total body mass, lean mass, increased
strength gains, and recovery.
Dietary source: Wild game, lean red
meat and fish.
MEDIUM-CHAIN TRIGLYCERIDES (MCT)
Fatty Acids.
Claim: Increase endurance; promotes fat
burning.
Evidence: Does not enhance endurance
performance or weight loss.
Dietary source: Coconut and palm
kernel oil.
Supplement and health stores are full of
products that promise amazing results.
These are a few examples of the claims
versus scientific research of popular
supplements. Before you reach for the
magic pill, think about the magic that
happens when you consume a balanced
diet while being physically active. Q

GIVE PILATES A CHANCE
Balance, stability, flexibility and core strength are major contributors
to overall physical fitness. Even if you are the fastest guy or gal in
your running group or just set a personal best in a sprint triathlon,
neglecting to focus on any one of those things will eventually catch
up with you. As we age, balance, stability, flexibility and strength
naturally decline. It’s never too late to start working on those
components of physical fitness, however. The good news is that you
can get started in the comfort of your own home by incorporating
Pilates into your weekly routine.
So what is Pilates, exactly? Early in the 20th century, Joseph
Pilates developed a method called controlology, which focused on
muscle control. Over time, this method was coined Pilates and is
now widely practiced across the globe through a series of corecentric exercises. In Pilates, the core refers to the abs, low back,
glutes and hips. While some types of Pilates training involves large
apparatuses like the Reformer or Cadillac, you can do mat-based
Pilates in your living room.
A big emphasis in Pilates is the breath. In Pilates you inhale
through the nose and exhale through the mouth with pursed lips.
The breath should be deep on the inhale and full on the exhale. As
one exhales, the abdominal wall and pelvic floor become engaged
and contract. Keeping that engagement on the subsequent inhale
is important to the practice. This breathing pattern might be
difficult at first, but over time, as stability and strength improve,
keeping the abdominal wall and pelvic floor engaged becomes
more natural. Coordinating breath with movement is critical to the
practice. You want to exhale with exertion, or when the movement
requires the most effort.
A great way to put the above breathing instructions into practice
is to lie down with your legs bent and feet flat to the floor. Place
one hand across your abdominals. As you inhale deeply through
your nose, you will feel your abdominal wall expand. Upon exhaling
through pursed lips, you will feel everything contract, or squeeze
together. Keeping the abdominals and pelvic floor engaged, inhale
again, and then fully exhale. Practice this to become familiar with
the breathing technique and then begin to incorporate exercises
like the ones listed below.

Try a Body-pump class
Build full-body strength plus aerobic fitness
at one of the many body pump classes
available at local gyms and fitness centers.
Body pump is a full-body workout using
weights and barbells, which add resistance,
building strength in arms, legs and core
muscles. Like traditional aerobics classes,
body pump workouts use high repetitions
with light weights, which burn calories
and exhaust muscles. Certified body pump
instructors provide options to suit everyone,
from the novice to the well-trained athlete.
Beginners start with light weights and build
over time. Participants typically see progress
in just a few short weeks. Body pump
classes can help any athlete improve.

St. Patrick’s Day run
Hit the stairs
With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Tuesday,
many traditional Irish-themed runs and events
will take place on March 14 and 15. More
than a dozen runs and events are happening
throughout the state, from the Gaelic Gallop
8K run in Dyersville to the Leprechaun Chase
10K in Des Moines. St. Patty’s Day themed
runs are also planned for Iowa City, Corydon,
Burlington, Cresco, North Liberty and more.
Two of the oldest include the O’ Round The
Loch Half Marathon in Emmetsburg on March
14 and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick 5K
and 10K in West Des Moines on March 29.

Though Iowa may not be in the heart of
the mountains, we do have mountains of
stairs beckoning to be climbed. The annual
Fight For Air stair climb will be held in Des
Moines on March 22 and gives you a chance
to hit the stairs as quickly as you can, all
while raising money for the American Lung
Association. This year’s event offers options
to climb from one to four of Des Moines’
tallest buildings. Those who tackle all four will
climb a total of 93 flights of stairs or 1,801
steps. Firefighters, law-enforcement officers,
fitness centers and families are encouraged
to put a team together for bragging rights of
the most stairs climbed, fastest climbed and
most money raised for the cause. For more
information, click on www.lung.org. Q

Chuck
By David Mable
Chuck Fritz was not content to simply participate in the U.S.
Snowshoe Association National Championships in Eau Claire,
Wisconsin; he wanted to make it about more than him.
“Matt Getting is a neighbor of mine,” said Fritz. “I knew he
was a triathlete; he’s done a couple of Ironmans, but recently he
told me that he and his sister have been diagnosed with Myotonic
Muscular Dystrophy and was working on raising money for MDA.”
While there is currently no known way to stop the progression
of this muscular degenerative disease, Getting is hoping his
fundraising efforts can help create hope for his children should they
inherit it.
“Symptoms include weakness in hands and legs, gripping
problems and weakening of the heart and other involuntary
muscles,” said Getting. “Instead of waiting for the disease to
consume us, we vowed to fight by teaming up with MDA (Muscular
Dystrophy Association) to help find a cure and other families like
ours.”
Getting has organized a group to run the Chicago or IMT Des
Moines Marathon to raise funds for MDA this fall. His hope is to
surpass the $13,000 he and his sister raised in 2014.

“When Matt asked if I could help, at first I turned him down.
I have so many events, I just couldn’t see how I could add another
marathon,” said Fritz. “But as I was thinking about it and felt I had
to do something, so I decided that I could do some fundraising for
my trip to the snowshoe championships.”
Fritz, who qualified for the snowshoe national championship
race by winning his age group at a Minauqua, Wisconsin race in
January of this year.
“I qualified in Minauqua this year. It was very cold; close to
zero and very windy,” said Fritz. “I won my age group in the 10K
–– the qualifiers are always 10K, though I’ll race the half marathon
at nationals. I guarantee I’ll be regretting my decision (to do the half
vs 10K) as soon as I begin my second lap, when the 10K runners are
pulling into the finish.”
Fritz bought his snowshoes only two years ago and has been
traveling to snowy Wisconsin and Minnesota nearly every weekend
in the winters to race.
“The courses are beautiful. I love running through the woods
in the snow,” he said. “Snowshoe racing up north is a much more
organized activity than here in Iowa. It’s much more consistent up
north, and consistently beautiful.”
While excited to race, Fritz is glad to use his snowshoes to help
his neighbor out.
“I feel fortunate that I have been able to do everything I’ve
wanted to do,” he said. “Fundraising is an effort but nothing
compared to what Matt and his sister have to look forward to. I can
do this.” Q
