Langtry Gardens: traditional-style
cottages, beautifully landscaped courtyard
gardens, an estate management service and
a peaceful community of mature,
like-minded people.
THE JERSEY LILY
In October 1853 at St Saviour’s Rectory, the Dean’s wife gave birth to a daughter, Emilie Charlotte LeBreton. Destined for greatness, the
child grew up to become Lillie Langtry, the most celebrated beauty of her age. Known as ‘The Jersey Lily’ because of the whiteness of her skin,
Lillie Langtry captured the imagination of the people – and the heart of the future king. Sir John Millais exhibited his portrait of her at the
Royal Academy to great acclaim and George Bernard Shaw, wrote of her: “She has no right to be intelligent, daring and independent
as well as lovely.”
Lillie Langtry had many happy memories of
her Jersey childhood and, throughout her life,
the celebrated beauty, actress and business woman,
retained her island connections. She married
twice, each time at St Saviour’s Church, and gave
birth to her own daughter, Jeanne-Marie, on the
island. In 1929, after her death, her body was
brought home from Monaco and laid to rest in
St Saviour’s churchyard where, at one time, she
and her brothers would dress as ghosts to alarm
passers-by. Today, Langtry Gardens bears her
name and a statue of ‘The Jersey Lily’ will grace
the new development as a tribute to her beauty and
her talent.
BEYOND THE ORDINARY
EXAMPLE FLOOR PLAN TYPE I
The design of the cottages at Langtry Gardens is exceptional, inside and out. With cream-rendered elevations beneath red, clay-tiled
roofs, dormer windows and a Dutch gable detail over the front doors, these new homes are traditional in style. Positioned to make the
most of the views over the central landscaped courtyard gardens, the cottages also have their own private gardens.
Internally, the spacious interiors, designed with mature home buyers in mind, provide an abundance of generously-proportioned living
space and two or three bedrooms. Nearly all the new cottages have spacious first floor master bedroom suites which extend the full
length of the house and feature en-suite bathrooms and dressing areas. Some cottages have sun lounges or conservatories and all have
a ground floor bedroom with an adjacent wet room.

ARCHITECTURAL
EXPERTISE
Professor Robert Adam’s contribution to the
classical tradition, both as a scholar and designer
of traditional and progressive classical architecture,
is internationally acknowledged. He has written
numerous historical, critical and theoretical papers,
published a book on classical design and a children’s
book on architecture and lectures widely in the UK
and abroad.
In 1986 Robert Adam co-founded Winchester
Design which later became known as ADAM
Architecture and, today, he continues to work
closely with clients on a diverse range of projects,
including several in Jersey.
At Langtry Gardens he has turned his skill and
experience to designing an exclusive collection
of traditional-style cottages which ooze ‘kerb
appeal’ and provide an abundance of living space
for mature home buyers who want generouslyproportioned rooms but no longer need more than
two or three bedrooms.
ST SAVIOUR
Largely surrounded by land, St Saviour offers easy access to the neighbouring parishes including St Helier, St Clement, Grouville,
St Martin and Trinity. Here you’ll find the 11th century St Saviour’s Church, the final resting place of Lillie Langtry and Government
House, home to the Jersey’s Lieutenant Governor. On the border of St Saviour and Grouville is La Hougue Bie, an impressive Neolithic
site with a 12 metre burial mound. On top of the mound are two mediaeval churches, beneath is a 6,000 year old grave passage.
St Saviour is a parish of contrasts; the south is urban with shops and businesses whilst the north is rural with farmland, fields, woodland
and a network of footpaths for walkers. Activities on offer locally range from cycling to tennis and golf and there’s a beach at Le Dicq.
Howard Davis Park, a green, flower-filled oasis, is a venue for outdoor screenings during Jersey’s Film Festival and hosts the Jazz and Rock
in the Park Festivals as well as regular musical performances.
