2012 Annual Report - Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition
Your support protected more than 90
outdoor spaces this year
Recently funded outdoor recreation projects
in Washington represent decades-old
aspirations finally becoming a reality in
communities across the state.
Here are just a few examples:
• The Missing Link at Point Defiance
in Tacoma
• The Foothills in Wenatchee
• More than a dozen farms
It is incredibly gratifying to be able to see
the results of years of hard work.
“You go out, you conserve the land and it’s
available to the people,” said
Maryanne Tagney-Jones, coalition
supporter and active conservation community member. “It’s a very concrete thing. You
can go out, stand in a field, and look at it.”
The Coalition promotes robust funding for
the WWRP and LWCF, which are essential to
providing parks near all Washington families.
With your support, we secured $65 million in
funding for the Washington Wildlife and

Recreation Program (WWRP) this biennium,
funding more than 90 projects.

Nearly $7.5 million from the Land and Water
Conservation Fund (LWCF) was awarded for eight
projects in Washington.
We can end this year knowing more people will
be able to get outside, wildlife will thrive, and
farmers will continue to nourish our communities. This level of success can only be achieved
together.
“Whether you seek solace in nature through
recreation or you rely on it for your livelihood, all
Washingtonians benefit from robust funding for
conservation and recreation,” said Joanna Grist,
Executive Director of the Washington Wildlife and
Recreation Coalition. “It is incredibly heartening
to see so many different voices coming together
to protect our outdoors.”

The Coalition’s power does not come from a
single individual. We have been successful
because diverse voices come together for
the common goal of conservation.

Director’s Message
Working together for the outdoors for a quarter century
More than 1,100 projects, $1.1 billion, all 39 counties.
You’ve heard these numbers before, but let’s throw a new one in
the mix: 25 years. 2014 is the Coalition’s 25th anniversary. When
this organization was founded, Washington was not investing in
its outdoors. Neighborhoods were without parks, trails were in
high demand, hunters and anglers needed better access to the
outdoors and wildlife needed protected habitat.
We can see the results of our work today, but as our population
expands, the need for outdoor access will only increase.
We are confident that we can continue to ensure Washington
communities have what they need to fulfill their conservation and
outdoor recreation needs.
The Coalition brings together a diverse membership — from business interests like Washington Realtors and REI to nonprofits like
the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Washington Environmental
Council — who speak in a unified voice on behalf of all outdoor
enthusiasts.
We look forward to another 25 years of bringing people together to
keep our state Evergreen. Thank you for making our work possible.
Yours in partnership,
Joanna Grist

Connecting communities
Secured in 2013
Cross Kirkland Corridor
Chas Redmond | Flickr Creative Commons
An old and unused rail line is
being converted to a trail crossing
through eight of Kirkland’s 13
neighborhoods with this WWRP
grant. Local residents have
repreatedly asked for increased
trail access and this project will
allow that to become a reality
for bikers, joggers, walkers, and
anyone looking for an alternative
route to work.
Kirkland’s neighborhoods
will soon be connected on
a disused rail line transformed to a five-mile trail.

Short’s Family Farm
This WWRP grant will ensure
farming will continue to be viable
on this fertile pastureland on the
Olympic Peninsula where the
family raises grass-fed beef. The
Shorts will be able to remain living
and working in the pastures their
family has owned for generations,
and Jefferson County’s rural character will be protected.
Your support helped secure
strong farmland funding in
the WWRP that protects
everything from seed farms
to cattle ranches.

Preserving habitat and public access
Heart of the Cascades
larry1732 | Flickr Creative Commons
For decades, hunters, hikers and
anglers have been recreating on
what was privately-owned timber
land on the eastern slopes of the
Cascades. Your support for the
WWRP put this treasured landscape in the public trust so it will
remain accessible. This concludes
a project that has been 10 years in
the making, protecting more than
15,000 acres of elk habitat and 34
miles of streams and rivers.
The state’s largest elk herd,
the Yakima herd, relies on
the Heart of the Cascades
as a wintering ground and
migration corridor.

Protecting the outdoors and creating jobs: Not an
either/or proposition
Outdoor recreation is a quiet economic giant seldom
mentioned in the business pages of the newspaper.
The outdoor recreation industry contributes $22.5
billion to our state’s economy each year. We rank
sixth in the nation for number of direct jobs from
outdoor recreation. By some estimations, that’s more
than the state’s IT and aerospace jobs, combined.
“
We can have it all.
Conservation and the economy
are inextricably linked.
”
It is clear that, without access to the outdoors, we
would not only lose an essential part of our identity
but also the state’s lifeblood.
“Outdoor recreation businesses rely on the preservation of public lands, wilderness areas and waterways
for our economic livelihood and the livelihood of
the thousands of people employed by the outdoor
industry across Washington State,” said Ken Meidell,
COO of Outdoor Reaseach and board member of the
Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance.
Clearly, we can have it all. Conservation and the
economy are inextricably linked and mutually
dependent.
According to Headwaters Economics, the western
United States, including Washington, is outpacing the
rest of the country in job creation, personal income
and population growth. Protected lands give western
states an advantage that helps create more jobs and
attract skilled employees.
We must continue this strong history of conservation
in order to keep this competitive edge and ensure
clean air, water and outdoor access for all.
Bipartisan conservation support grows, need remains
Eli Duke | Flickr Creative Commons
Whether red or blue, Americans value their natural
heritage.
A recent poll showed that more than seven-in-ten
American voters agree that “even with federal budget
problems, funding to safeguard land, air, and water
should not be cut.” In addition, 85 percent of American
voters think their Member of Congress should honor
the commitment to fund conservation through the
Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).
LWCF is the nation’s premier funding source for conservation, all from non-taxpayer dollars. Washington
State’s Congressional Delegation is charging to the
forefront for strong LWCF funding.
“I am struck by how many of my favorite places have
been protected by this program every time I go hiking
or even just visit nearby parks,” said Hannah Clark, the
Coalition’s LWCF Campaign Director. “This poll echoes
what the Coalition hears from Washingtonians every
day: that investing in our outdoors makes strong sense
for our communities, economy and quality of life.”
The legacy of LWCF funding includes iconic places like
Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens and many of our state’s wildlife refuges enjoyed by hunters and wildlife watchers
alike. However, this funding source for our outdoors
faces imminent threats.
5
LWCF protects treasured places like Mt. St.
Helens. We’re leading the charge in Washington
to make sure the program stays strong.
Funds for LWCF continue to be diverted for
unrelated spending and the bill will expire in 2015
unless it is reauthorized. This year, nine LWCF projects
went unfunded in Washington alone.
The Coalition is leading the charge to ensure our
members of Congress are hearing from diverse voices
across the state.
Thank you for your support!

Heard around the state
“Camping, hunting, floating and fishing
may soon become even more accessible
in Kittitas County thanks in large part to
[the WWRP].”
“In an era of increasingly partisan
politics, the Washington Wildlife and
Recreation Coalition brings together
people from across the political
spectrum with a common purpose.”
“The Washington Wildlife and
Recreation Coalition is one of
the nation’s all-too-few ongoing
examples of bipartisan, across-thebattle-lines cooperation.”
