What is the EP Stress Score Anyhow?
The EP (Electrophysiological) Stress Score, the result of a major study performed at the
Hospital, found that the VAS Score (Visual Analog Scale) correlated highly with change
the sum total of muscle activity, as measured in microvolts for the full spine.

Those who responded to care over a 3 month period had a statistically significant
reduction in their “EP STRESS SCORE” vs. those who do did not respond to care. VAS
Scores changed in the “responder” group from 6 to 1, while the EP Stress Score
changed from 542 to 180 microvolts.
The key is to see the first test as a “baseline” and only use it to compare with future
tests to quickly determine changes.

How is it calculated?
Simply add up all the numbers for the left and right sides of the spine, at
each measured level (in microvolts) for the ScanVision Static sEMG. The EP
Stress Score is simply a sum of all muscle activity about the spine.
What are the advantages of using the EP Stress Score?
1. BASELINE TRACKS PROGRESS: The key to using the EP Stress Score is to view it as a “BASELINE” to track
patient progress. The EP Stress Score on its own does not mean very much. Multiple data points are needed to
track progress no matter what is measured. TRACKS PROGRESS: Makes it very simple and quick to track patient
progress with a single number, which is obvious to both patient and doctor in seconds.

RULE: Acute vs. Chronic Cases:
With patients who are in pain and acute, the EP Stress Score will start high and drop over time. With patients who
are in chronic fatigue, the EP Stress Score will start low, go up at the re-exam, and drop again over time.
2. REPRODUCIBILITY: Removes the effect of “Sway”, increasing reproducibility significantly.
Many times we see tests where we cannot explain why the bars which may point to the left, on retest point to
the right. The truth is that we perform the Standing Static sEMG because it provides the most clinically valid
data. The only downside to the Standing test is that the patient may “sway” a bit as they are maintaining their
own posture. It turns out that when using the EP Stress Score, regardless of whether muscles fire more on the
left or right, the EP Stress Score (sum of all activity) does not change very much, increasing the reproducibility
to the user significantly.
Below is a “Pre-test” (left) and “Post-test” (right) performed on a patient April 23rd, 2014. Note that the
direction of the imbalance (the bars) has shifted from pointing to the right in the lower thoracic and lumbar to
pointing to the left. But, when looking at the EP Stress Score, the change (not statistically significant) is from
244 microvolts to 254 microvolts, a change of 10 millionths of a volt, which is meaningless and essentially the
same.
Reproducibility? Same patient, two tests in a row and the difference is less than 10 millionths of a volt!

When should I use EP Stress Score? When should I not? The key is that it
correlates highly with the VAS score, and therefore is great for tracking
patient progress over time.
1. EXAM AND RE-EXAM: turn on the EP Stress Score in the office. It is not as useful at screenings.
2. PRE-POST ADJUSTMENT TESTS: For the Chiropractic Skeptic, there is nothing more valuable than to show
them data. Expect typical results (research studies have established this) of a 30 to 50% reduction in EP Stress
Score, Pre to Post Adjustment depending upon your adjusting technique. Manual adjusting provides the
greatest pre to post change due to the nature of the adjustment’s effect on the nervous system.
When performing pre-to post adjustment tests,
make certain to wait 15 minutes for the post test,
as the first response to an adjustment is “chaos”
and an increase in muscle activity. Also, make
certain the patient stays standing between pre
and post tests. If they sit, when they suddenly
stand muscles will again fire more than they
would if they accommodated while standing.

3. SCREENINGS..NOT SO MUCH: At screenings to have just a single number, although easy to read does not mean
as much since you have nothing to compare it to. That being said, everyone has a different ability and you can
turn it on or off at your leisure, at Setup, Settings, Static, Score.
4. USE SAME EXAM TYPE: If you perform only the QuickScreen in your office (Cervical and Lumbar only) make
sure to use the QuickScreen on the patient for all exams. Otherwise there is no way to compare EP Stress Score
results. If you perform full spine tests, simply perform full spine tests on the same patients to maintain
consistency.
What about Other New Features in the Software?
1. UP TO 4X THE BATTERY LIFE: We noticed that some individuals were getting great
battery life, while others get poor battery life. When we examined the actual exam
data it was clear: Battery Saver Mode was needed.
How does it work? When testing if you decide to stop and talk to your patient,
battery saver mode kicks in and puts the device to sleep. Simply press both left and right Start buttons and
you’re up and running again, with no time wasted. Result? Battery life increased by up to 4 times!

2. NEW HIGH TECH GRAPHICS! Not only are they cool looking, but they have both male and female images to
meet all patients’ needs.

3. CONTROL IMAGE COLOR/DENSITY: For those who want to change how the image appears,
simply click Setup, Settings, Static, and change everything from the color of the bars to the
color/density of the graphic itself! Turn on and off the microvolts, ideal graphic etc. etc.
etc.
4. FRESH LOOK AND FEEL: The Enhanced GUI (Graphical User Interface) has been
optimized to look good on all new high res screens. It is fresh. It is new. It is
modern and cool.
5. SORT BY DATE: Sort by Date…not just name. Forget who you tested last? Now
just click “Most Recent Exam Date” columnn and voila, patients are listed in order
of exam date making it easier to find!
6. NEW MICROSOFT DATABASE UPGRADE: The
SQL Format and method of setup has been
rebuilt from the ground up, to provide the
most robust installation and use on modern
networks with minimal need for interaction
with your IT Professional. Microsoft’s new changes required a major overhaul of our system, and these changes
are something you cannot see, but can certainly feel!
7. SCAN IN HALF THE TIME: New complex algothryms make the processing of data on
the computer optimized for speed. That means significantly reduced time to complete
a Static Scan, maximizing use of your high quality patented multi probe hardware.
