United Way of Greater Knoxville has been the best way to help the most people for more than 93
years in our community. This has been possible only because of the generous and committed
individuals honored in this registry.
This group of more than 1,400 donors account for 45% of all dollars raised during the 2013
campaign. They understand that United Way of Greater Knoxville and its partner agencies are
working to create long-lasting solutions to the problems our community faces, and they want to be
part of that change.
As chairman of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, I welcome each of you to the United Way of
Greater Knoxville Leadership Giving Society. You have set the example for all of us by selflessly

United Way Leaders
United Way of Greater Knoxville Leaders is a recognition program for individuals and
households who make personal gifts of $1,000* or more to United Way.
Donors may contribute through payroll deduction as well as direct payments of cash
or stock, and households have the option of combining their related gifts through
respective employers to meet one of four giving levels or through one of our affinity
groups. When a donor makes a minimum gift of $1,000 per year (or $20 per week), he or
she becomes a member of this recognition program and his or her name appears in the
annual Leaders’ Register at the appropriate giving level.
Alexis de Tocqueville Society and Women of Tocqueville Society members contribute
$10,000 or more annually to United Way of Greater Knoxville and are recognized through
this Leaders’ Register.

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is
named for the 19th century French
historian who, in his classic treatise,
“Democracy in America”, admired
America's unique spirit of volunteerism.
One of his most important observations
was that Americans hold in common
a unique willingness to work for the
public good—a tendency to lend faithful
support to neighbors and countrymen,
especially in times of need. He saw
volunteerism as a way of life that was
characteristic of Americans.
The members of this society are a
special group of influential individuals
who partner with United Way of Greater
Knoxville to make this a strong and
healthy community. Through their
compassion and philanthropy, these
individuals demonstrate exceptional
generosity and leadership, and provide
the momentum for real lasting change in
our region.

United Way of Greater Knoxville’s
Alexis de Tocqueville Society has
seen enormous growth during the
past several years. When founded in
1991, the society had 16 members who
contributed a total of $227,050. In 2013,
22 years later, 127 members donated
more than 3.3 million dollars, or 28% of
the overall annual campaign.
We honor the men and women of our
Tocqueville Society for their vision, their
compassion, and their lasting impact on
the lives of thousands of families and
individuals in our community.

Society Dinner
On December 12th, 2013, United Way of Greater Knoxville’s closest friends joined together at
the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center for the annual Alexis de Tocqueville Society dinner. With
its namesake in attendance, this beautiful building brought our friends together and stood
as a reminder of the generosity we are fortunate to have here in Knox County.
Our Alexis de Tocqueville Society chairman, Jim Haslam, began the night by welcoming our
guests and noting highlights of the society’s success, and United Way Board Chair, Tommy
Schmid, gave a special toast to Natalie Haslam.
During dinner, guests had the honor of hearing beautiful music performed by The University
of Tennessee School of Music students.
After dinner, guests heard from Mintha Roach, the Women of Tocqueville Society chair, as
she shared news of new members and initiatives in our local Women’s
Leadership Council.
As a highlight of the evening, our campaign chair, Bob Kesling, welcomed our special guest,
Roy Kramer, onstage. The retired commissioner of the Southeastern Conference shared
moving stories with our guests, leaving them with inspiring words to take home.
Our night concluded with the signing of “Happy Birthday” to Jim Haslam, who celebrated his
birthday the day after our event.
United Way of Greater Knoxville looks forward to this annual event with our most cherished
community leaders, and we cannot thank them enough for their commitment to
our community.

(MILLION DOLLAR ROUNDTABLE)
A gift of $1,000,000 or more entitles an individual or couple to
membership in the National Million Dollar Roundtable. Standards
for involvement are:
1.
A $1,000,000 outright gift;
2.
An up-front pledge or challenge grant of at least $1,000,000 payable over five years or less with annual payments of at least $200,000;
3.
Cumulative gifts totaling $1,000,000 paid within a 10-
year period;
4.
A combination of gifts made and a signed pledge as long as the total aggregates at least $1,000,000 and the period does not exceed five years.
5.
An irrevocable planned gift to United Way valued at $1,000,000 or more.
Our United Way is incredibly fortunate to have seven members of

Jim and Natalie Haslam
Pilot Corporation
Jim, chairman and founder of Pilot Corporation, and his
wife, Natalie, are founding members of the Tocqueville
Society in Knoxville. Both have been active in many
civic and charitable organizations. Natalie has been
president of the Knoxville Symphony, the East Tennessee
Foundation, the East Tennessee Historical Society and
the Knoxville Arts Council. Jim has been United Way
campaign chairman, Tocqueville Society chairman, and the
first recipient of the local United Way Tocqueville Society
Award. He was a trustee for the University of Tennessee for
27 years and was both vice chairman and chairman of the
Executive Committee.

Clayton Family Foundation
Jim is the founder of Clayton Homes and served as
chairman until it was acquired by Berkshire Hathaway
in 2003. Current Chairman and principal shareholder of
Clayton Bank and Trust, Jim also serves on the Board of
Directors for Clayton Bancshares, MidCountry Financial,
and Caris Healthcare.

Charlie, a long-time supporter of United Way, is President
and CEO of Anderson Companies. Charlie serves on the

the University of Tennessee College of Business advisory

Steve and Ann Bailey
Steve and Ann Bailey believe United Way is the most
efficient way to help the most people and have been
impressed with the work of United Way in Knoxville and
throughout the community. Ann is active in the Knoxville
Garden Club and St. John’s Cathedral, and Steve is the
immediate past president of the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Bob and Wendy Goodfriend
Bob, former chairman and CEO of Goody’s, and Wendy are
long time supporters of United Way of Greater Knoxville.
Bob and Wendy are also active in the Children’s Miracle
Network and the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. Bob
chaired the 2001 United Way campaign and, in the midst of
the September 11th tragedy, surpassed his goal providing
leadership during the most challenging fundraising
environment ever experienced in Knoxville.

First Lady Crissy Haslam
Bill and Crissy Haslam are long-time supporters of
United Way because it’s an effective way to meet
community needs. Bill most recently served as
mayor of the city of Knoxville, Tennessee, and in
January of 2011 became the 49th governor of the
state of Tennessee.

Bill also served as the 1992 United Way campaign
chair and was board chair from 1997-1999. He
and Crissy devote their resources and energy to a

The Haslam 3 Foundation
Jimmy and Dee Haslam, Trustees
Jimmy is President of Pilot Flying J and principal owner
of The Cleveland Browns. Dee is the CEO of RIVR
Media. Jimmy and Dee have each chaired the United
Way campaign in Knoxville, Jimmy in 1986 and Dee in
2000. They achieved the largest percentage increases
in giving in the organization’s ninety year history.
Both have chaired the United Way of Greater Knoxville
board of directors and led the organization through
periods of change and growth.
Jimmy and Dee are two of Knoxville’s most recognized,
respected and generous leaders having served
on numerous nonprofit boards in addition to United
Way. They are both regarded as tireless workers and
believers in the local community. Dee is President of
the Cleveland Browns Foundation, Chair of the East
Tennessee Children’s Hospital, and a board member
of The United Way of Greater Cleveland and The
University of Tennessee Foundation.

United Way of Greater Knoxville’s Women of Tocqueville Society was founded in 2011 by 49
female donors who are determined to make a difference in our community. These women
support Early Grade Literacy and Education Initiatives through United Way of Greater
Knoxville and make an annual gift at the Alexis de Tocqueville Society level.
Cynthia Gibson, of Scripps Networks Interactive, spearheaded this initiative with the help
of other members of the Women of Tocqueville steering committee, which included Donna
Cobble, Joan Cronan, Dee Haslam, Sharon Pryse, Mintha Roach, and Pat Summitt.
After serving as chair of the local Women of Tocqueville Society, Cynthia has served as the
chair of the National Women’s Leadership Council for United Way Worldwide and currently
serves on the board of directors of United Way of America.

Women in t he Next Generation S ociety
Women in the Next Generation Society was founded in the campaign year of 201314. Its 35 founding members were women engaged in our community who support
the United Way of Greater Knoxville through volunteer engagement as well as annual
giving at $2,500 - $9,999. WINGs members have raised more than $70,000 for United
Way to invest in making a difference in our community and improving the lives of more
than 100,000 Knox County individuals each year.
