Welcome
Welcome to the Wonderful World
of Driving in Europe with Avis
Avis welcomes you to the joys of driving in Europe,
where driving your own car permits you to vacation
at your own pace – wandering off the beaten path,
stopping when you see something interesting and
deciding to linger as long as you like. In a car you
can avoid the crowds, save money by staying in the
country, meet the locals, eat and live as they do and
avoid the “tourist traps.”
To make the most of your European driving tour, Avis
has prepared this little pamphlet full of travel hints
to make your trip fun and hassle-free.

As part of its commitment to providing innovative
services to make the rental process faster, safer and
easier, Avis is proud to introduce Know Before You
Go, Avis On Call, and the Avis Message Center. These
three services are designed to help you on your trip
both before and while you are traveling.
Each service puts you in direct contact with
knowledgeable Avis employees who are trained
and empowered to do whatever it takes to assure
your individual needs are met. They can help you
plan your trip, solve problems while abroad, or
stay in touch with friends and family. These services
represent the “we try harder” attitude, which you
can expect in every aspect of the Avis rental
experience.

Avis’ exclusive international services
Avis Know Before You Go
Avis Message Center
Before your departure from the U.S. or Canada, call
1-800-297-4447 with your Avis rental confirmation number to receive up-to-the-minute information on customs
procedures, currency exchange rates, driving license
requirements and more. This exclusive telephone travel
information service covers 40+ countries worldwide
and is offered at no charge to Avis renters via a toll-free
number in the U.S. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Avis Message Center is an exclusive international
round-the-clock leave-and-retrieve message center
offered in 30+ countries worldwide via special tollfree numbers for each country. Service is available
exclusively to Avis renters on the road at no charge
24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Avis renters must call
Avis Know Before You Go at 1-800-297-4447 prior to
departure from the U.S. to obtain and carry with
them the country-specific toll-free numbers, as they
are NOT available anywhere in Europe. You must give
your Rental Agreement number to access Avis
Message Center during your rental period. Once
enrolled in the Message Center service, the renter can
leave or retrieve messages by calling the toll-free
number provided to them 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, and giving their name. Similarly, parties in the
U.S. wishing to leave the renter a message (or retrieve
messages left for them by the renter) 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, can do so by calling 1-800-297-4447
and giving the renter’s name. In both cases, they
will speak directly with an Avis representative who
is more than happy to assist at any time of the day
or night.
Avis On Call
Avis On Call is an exclusive telephone assistance
service offered only to Avis renters while on the road
in 30+ countries via toll-free telephone numbers that
are answered by Avis representatives in the U.S. 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. This service can offer you
help on a variety of issues relating to travel abroad.
Avis renters must call Avis Know Before You Go at
1-800-297-4447 prior to departure from the U.S. to
obtain and carry with them the country-specific
toll-free numbers, as they are NOT available anywhere
in Europe. Your Rental Agreement number is required
to access Avis On Call assistance.
Avis On Call connects you to a trained agent in
the U.S. who can help you solve a myriad of travel
hassles that can mar a vacation. Examples of help
categories include:
• Replacing prescriptions for medication (or eyeglasses)
• Medical assistance (from nearest qualified Englishspeaking doctor)
• Finding lost luggage (with airline, left at a hotel, etc.)
• Simultaneous language translation of major languages
including French, German, Spanish & Italian

charged should the rental exceed 7 days. Avis renters
are responsible for airtime charges. To obtain a

Tips for renting and driving in Europe
Rates
Avis has promotional rates for U.S. residents that
can save up to 50%, but you must book your Avis
car prior to departure from the U.S. to qualify for
the savings.
Renters can choose between inclusive (Collision
Damage Waiver, Theft Protection and the mandatory
VAT) or exclusive rates.
Insurance
Renters should contact their car insurance/credit
card company at home prior to departure to find
out if either/both covers driving an Avis car in
the specific European country they plan to visit.
To be on the safe side, renters should buy waivers
from the car rental company overseas to ensure
they are covered and to avoid unnecessary risk.
Manual vs. Automatic
When you reserve your Avis car, you must specify
an automatic car if you are not comfortable shifting
gears in a manual shift car. Avis has a fleet of automatic cars at each international airport throughout
Europe, but it may be difficult to find one in the
countryside.
Check out your car before leaving the Avis parking
area. Test headlights, radio/cassette deck or
CD player, turn signals, windshield washer
and the door locking system, as European
cars are different from American cars.
In a manual car, make sure you
know how to engage reverse.
10
Tips
• Carry a global cell phone, which you can get
from Avis Stay in Touch, in case you get lost
or need help
• Buy a local newspaper and leave it displayed
inside the car to disguise the fact it is a rental car
• European cars are much smaller than American cars
– request one big enough for you and your luggage
• Request a car with CD/cassette deck – bring your
own music or audiobooks
• Keep luggage in the trunk for rest stops -- watch
out for “valet” parkers who keep the keys and
empty the trunk
• Limit driving to 4 hours a day – use Michelin.com
to get the miles and approximate driving times
• Get a car with enough power to enjoy the higher
speed limits in Europe and to get across the Alps
• Go to AAA and obtain an International Driver’s
Permit, which is simpler than a state license
