SPECIAL PARISH ASSEMBLY ON MAY 2
T
he Cathedral will hold a special, informative Parish Assembly on Sunday, May 2, following the Divine Liturgy.
Father Anthony Scott of Stewardship Advocates will report on the feasibility of moving forward on the Cathedral’s plans to build a new Cathedral at our current 245 Valencia Street location. Father Anthony’s report is
based upon interviews and a focus session, which he conducted in mid-April. He has compiled similar studies
for many Orthodox Churches, including a number in the Bay Area, and led a number of successful capital campaigns. On
May 2 Father Anthony will concelebrate the Divine Liturgy and preach the sermon. It is suggested that congregants arrive
early for the Divine Liturgy, which begins at 10:30 a.m., to hear Father Scott’s message.
Architectural drawings for the new Cathedral will also be unveiled on May 2. John Goldman, the Cathedral’s architect,
will present floor plans, elevations, and renderings to the congregation. The plans are based on the 6th century Great
Church of Haghia Sophia in Constantinople and also on the adjacent Church of Haghia Eirene. A cordial invitation is
being extended to everyone who is interested in learning about the plans to rebuild the Cathedral, to attend the special
informative Parish Assembly on May 2. This Parish Assembly is being held for informational purposes only; no action will
be taken at this Assembly.
SUCCESSFUL REGULAR PARISH ASSEMBLY HELD ON APRIL 18th
T
he Cathedral thanks all those who participated
in the Cathedral’s first regular Parish Assembly
for 2010, held on April 18. In addition to listening to and asking questions about a number
of topics, ranging from youth to parish life, the Assembly
elected Basil Tonas, Anthony Ambus, and John Panomitros to serve as this year’s Nominating Committee for
Parish Council elections. It also elected Foula Vasilogiorgis, Basil J. Vlahos, and Tony Vozaitis to serve as Board
of Auditors. In addition, it named Father Stephen, Chris
Kyriacou, James Dariotes and James Vorrises as parish
representatives to the Archdiocese Clergy-Laity, to be convened in Atlanta, GA July 4-9, with Perri Nager serving
as Alternate Delegate.

MY FAIR LADY: THEME OF THIS YEAR’S MOTHER’S DAY
LUNCHEON AND FASHION SHOW
T
he Annunciation Cathedral Philoptochos is delighted to announce that
its 51st annual Mother’s
Day Luncheon and Fashion show,
which will be held on Saturday, May
8, 2010 at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in San Francisco, will feature the theme My Fair Lady. Period
fashions and décor will be featured, as
we endeavor to turn the Korinthias
Hall and Gym into the fin-de-siecle
era in which My Fair Lady took place.
A champagne reception will begin
the festivities, followed by a delicious
luncheon, to be provided by Stella’s
Cuisine Catering. And, of course,
enjoyable entertainment, including
melodies from the famous movie,
along with lovely fashions from prominent clothiers will be presented. A
special raffle featuring fabulous prizes,
will help make the day truly exciting. Come join us, as we present and
honor two special worthy Mothers
of the Year. For your convenience, a
facsimile of the invitation, which was
mailed to you is being reprinted below. Join us for a day that will be both
memorable and one you won’t want
to miss, in addition to supporting the
many ministries of our Philoptohcos.
Irene Kyriacou is the Chair of this
year’s event. Together with an active
and engaged committee, under Irene’s
chairmanship, the Mother’s Day luncheon and fashion show will feature a
runway taken right out of the movie.

2010 FESTIVAL
A
FEASIBILITY STUDY COMPLETED
A
s noted above, Father Anthony Scott, a well-known financial
consultant, who heads Stewardship Advocates, has recently concluded a series of interviews with a cross-section of the Cathedral
community and led a focus session for the Parish Council and other members of the Cathedral’s leadership. Some 42 individuals were personally
interviewed, and 100% of the Parish’s leadership were in attendance. On May
2, Father Scott will present his findings to the congregation, during a specially
called, informational Parish Assembly. The Cathedral’s architect will also “unveil” the various drawings, which depict the Cathedral’s proposed building project. Some of them will be full renderings, based upon Revitt, a program in which
all the dimensions, elevations, and other factors have been entered.
Based upon Father Scott’s report, which has generated sufficient support and
enthusiasm throughout the parish and in the Greek Orthodox community, in
general, the next step will be to lay the groundwork for a capital campaign.
Meanwhile, Nibbi Brothers has provided the parish with a cost estimate for the
project. The Parish Council/Building Committee will put all this in the form of
a proposal and put the proposal to the community at a specially called Parish
Assembly. Following the approval by the Parish, the plans will then go to the
Metropolitan for approval by the Metropolis.
We are presently entering the construction phase of the plans. That is, they are
being developed in detail, in a form which can then be submitted to the Planning Department for approval and, eventually, the issuance of a building permit.
Meanwhile, as required, a meeting with the neighbors was held on April 20. The
purpose of the meeting was to explain the project and to afford the neighbors an
opportunity to ask questions.
Building a new church—especially the Cathedral Church of the Metropolis—
is the most emotive, inspiring, and motivational building program a parish can
undertake… Father Anthony Scott, Stewardship Advocates.
3
s noted, the Cathedral’s Food Festival
will take place at
the Cathedral, 245
Valencia Street, September 24,
25 and 26 (Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday). Andrew Dimitriou will serve as this year’s
Food Festival Chairman. Plans
are underway to expand the
scope of the festival by providing more activities for young
and old, alike. In addition to
traditional Greek dancing, we
are planning to expand our offerings of Greek Folk Music and
Choral Music. We also hope to
have additional events for children. As a result, there are more
openings for volunteers. Anyone interested in being a part
of this undertaking is invited to
contact Andrew Dimitriou.
His direct line is 415 434-1144.
The Food Festival Committee
is also looking for people to assist in the preparation for the
Festival. For example, we are
considering expanding the program book to include more pages in color. We hope to expand
the program book to include
information on the dances,
traditions, and unique cultural
aspect of Greece and the Greek
Orthodox Faith. We would welcome individuals who wish to
provide written cultural explanations of the various dances
performed by the dance groups,
as well as the other information
noted above.

T
HISTORICAL COMMITTEE TO CONVENE ON
MAY 1
A
historical committee whose purpose is to preserve and promote the
history and ethos of the Greek experience in the Bay Area is in the
process of being formed. A meeting will take place on Saturday,
May 1, at 11 a.m. at the Annunciation Cathedral. The Cathedral
has stated it would like to create a museum of Hellenic origins on site. More
than likely, this will come about as the new Cathedral church is constructed.
Temporary plans are to convert the Kytherian Room, a 1500 square foot space to
the north of the Cathedral’s Korinthias Hall and Gym, to serve this purpose. A
bookstore in connection with the museum is also being planned.
NEXT COMMUNITY LINK MAY 15
Please join us for our upcoming Community Link on Saturday, May 15 We will
meet at the Cathedral at 9am for prayer and visit assignments, followed by visits
(usually in pairs), concluding by Noon.
Our visitations to home-bound parishioners are very special to us and to those
we visit. They bring joy to our seniors who are experiencing isolation from their
community due to illness, loss or hardship. Community Link is an excellent way
for all of us -- children, adults and families -- to engage with one another and to
share the message of God’s love. If you know someone who would like a visit, or
to RSVP, please email me.
Community Link dates for the remainder of 2010, in addition to May 15, are:
June 19, July 17, August 21, September 18, October 16, November 20, December 18. All dates are Saturdays. For more information, please call Caroline, at
(415) 699-5633 or e- mail, [email protected].

he Cathedral is The Metropolis of San Francisco
is pleased to announce its
first annual Greek Immersion Camp, “The Greek Village.” The
camp will take place June 12-19 at St.
Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center.
The program is open to all youth, ages
6-11. Activities will be divided based
on age-appropriateness, to facilitate
learni ng and enhance the children’s
educational experience. For more information, please call Deacon Niko
at the Cathedral, at 415 864-8000.
ORATORICAL
FESTIVAL ON
MAY 16
T
his year, the Cathedral’s
Oratorical Festival will
take place on Sunday, May
16 (one week after Mother’s Day). We will not be participating
in the district or the Metropolis festivals, due, primarily, to the very early
date of Pascha. This, then, will be an
intra-parish Oratorical Festival. Deacon Niko will prepare promotional
materials and will team-up to encourage our young people to participate.
The Festival will take place in the
chapel, following the Divine Liturgy,
and the children’s talks will take the
place of a sermon on that Sunday. We
invite our congregants to remain in
the chapel, thus lending support to
our youth, as they articulate aspects of
our Holy Orthodox Faith.
F O C U S O N YO U T H
voice mails, texts, face book, etc. AHHHHH! But as I am
about to have a child go off to college, I reflect on what is
really important and what are my favorite memories. I will
miss my family times with Katie and the time we attended
church together. I hope she will continue her Orthodox
faith as she goes off on her own. For many of you, your children are just beginning on their childhood. Now is the time
to make a commitment to their religious education. What
will your reflections be 10 - 15 years from now? It’s not too
late to take action, make priorities that really count. Plant
the seeds for their future.
SUNDAY SCHOOL KORNER
C
hristos Anesti! What a wonderful Pascha!
Among our beautiful worship services and other
Pascha-related events, TGI Pascha continues to
be a popular event with over 80 children attending this year’s Good Friday observance. Our Angels (Myrrh
bearers) continue to be a welcome addition to the Holy
Week Services. Thank you to everyone who helped make
this possible.
May promises to bring us more great events. Below are just
three events in which the Suday School children are involved:
In the Fall of 2010 we would like to start Sunday School
with strength. We will hope many children will be in attendance each Sunday. With that goal, we will need 3 -4
new volunteers to step up and help in the classroom. In
addition, I need help with several of the programs. I will
need volunteers for: writing our Herald article each month,
managing our FoodDrive, The Christmas program, art’s n
crafts & Santa, the Sunday coffee hour, the Oratorical Festival, Sunday school office administration. TGI Pascha and
other events, the Angels program, and other programs.

Graduation and Scholarship Sunday June 6
Our classrooms were overflowing with children on Good
Friday and I couldn’t help but think how wonderful it would
be to have that attendance all year for our children. That’s
how I remember my Sunday school classes so many years
ago. After church, we would go to a relative’s home for a
great meal and just visit. But times have changed. We are
a much busier society today. Sunday seems to be the only
day many of us have off from work and we have so many
things to do. Laundry, grocery shopping, checking emails,
Please reflect and volunteer to help. It does take commitment and a village.

ONCE AGAIN, ANNUNCIATION’S CATHEDRAL WILL OFFER
SIX $1,000 SCHOLARSHIPS THIS YEAR
A
s noted in the March Herald, the Cathedral is pleased to be able to offer some assistance to its youth. This year,
six (6) scholarships will be offered, each for $1,000: the Anthony P. Bagatelos Medical Scholarship, the Lee
Vavuris Legal Scholarship, the John N. Pappas Scholarship, Two Philoptochos Scholarships and the Argyres
Scholarship. High school graduates and those already attending college are invited to apply for one of the
scholarships. Application forms may be obtained by calling the Cathedral at 415 864-8000. The deadline for submitting applications is May 25. Scholarship certificates will be awarded at the Graduation Day ceremonies and luncheon on Sunday,
June 6, which is also the last day of the Cathedral’s Sunday School, prior to the summer break.
Youth Committee Being Formed
As has been announced in the Herald and the Sunday bulletins the last two months, the Cathedral is putting together committees to help with the various ministries of our community. One such committee that is being formed is the Youth Committee. Thank you to Mr. Ari Stratakis and Mr. Mike Canellos for agreeing to be on the Youth Committee, and we are
still looking for two more committed parishioners to join. One of the responsibilities of the committee will be to organize
the various calendars of youth events in our parish. Thus, our Cathedral JOY group, which has met twice already, will be
on pause until an adequate meeting time can be determined by the Youth Committee. If you or anyone you know would
like to be on the Cathedral’s Youth Committee, please contact Deacon Niko Bekris at (415) 864-8000.

Cathedral GOYA News
A
pril was another active month for the
Annunciation Cathedral GOYA! April
10th, the Cathedral GOYA, under the
leadership of Katerina Loufas, Alyssa
Obester, and Deacon Niko Bekris, held a GOYA
Lock-In (sleepover) at the church, in which 20 GOYAns had dinner, played volleyball and basketball,
watched a movie, and did a discussion on relationships.
The following morning, a “teaching liturgy” was held, in
which Father Stephen and Deacon Niko would pause at
various points in the service and explain to the children
what was going on. That evening, the GOYAns and
their families attended a Golden State Warriors Game,
which had the theme of “Hellenic Heritage Night.”
Thanks to all who attended, and a special thank you to
Emmanual Darzins, Brittany Henderson, Natalie
Schrik, Diakonissa Stella Bekris, Mike Canellos
and Mrs. Maria Vozaites who helped with organizing
this wonderful event.
Also in April, our GOYAns had a meeting in which
they made relief kits for the earthquake victims of Haiti.
Thank you again to Alyssa Obester to came up with
the idea! If you are interested in being a part of GOYA,
please contact Deacon Niko Bekris at (415) 8648000, or visit the Youth of Annunciation Cathedral
San Francisco Facebook Group page.
Young Adult Group News
I
n April 2010 our Young Adult Group celebrated one year since its formation! Thank you to
all our Cathedral young professionals (married
and single, I might add!) who come out on a
monthly basis to break bread together at a different restaurant in San Francisco each month. Our young adult
group met for dinner on April 29th, the last Thursday
of every month. Also, there are plans to soon have our
Young Adult group meet twice a month, once for dinner, and once for an evening of coffee and socializing.
More details will be forthcoming. If you are interested
in being a part of the Cathedral Young Adult Group,
or know someone who is interested, please contact
Deacon Niko Bekris at (415) 864-8000, or visit the
