The Mark Twain Study
The Mark Twain Exhibit
on the Elmira College Campus
in historic Cowles Hall
About the Study: The Study, designed by Susan Crane,
sister-in-law of Mark Twain, originally sat on East Hill
overlooking the Chemung River Valley. It was moved
to the Elmira College Campus in 1952 so visitors could
experience the space where Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry
Finn were created.
About the Exhibit: The Cowles Hall exhibition—housed
in a single room combined with hallway displays—features
expansive photographs, Langdon Mansion and Quarry Farm
antiques, and media highlighting Quarry Farm. Follow the
directional arrows in the Cowles Hall Rotunda that point
towards the North Wing exhibition hallway and room.
