In 1981 the premature death of Roger G. Hauser, M.D. prompted
his friend and associate Choong Baick, M.D., to fund a Memorial
Scholarship Trust which would award a Scholarship to a first year
medical student at UC Irvine. This fund ended in the hands of the
Santa Ana Rotary Club Foundation, to insure it’s tax exempt status.
The scholarship was awarded annually. beginning in 1982
under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Tustin. Concerns about
maintaining the tax-exempt status caused the Tustin Club to turn
the project over to the Santa Ana Rotary Club Foundation, who has
handled it subsequently.
There was a lapse of 3 years when no scholarships were given,
so last year we awarded four scholarships. (Last month we
awarded one scholarship).
When Dr. Baick (pronounced “back”) called to say he wanted to
make a presentation to the Hauser Memorial Fund at our next
meeting, he gave no hint of the generosity he intended to show.
This was not known until, after making his remarks to the club,
he handed a check for $10,000.00 to Wayne. From the expressions
on Gerry and Wayne’s faces, you can extrapolate the general response of the members present.
Wayne teased Choong that his contribution “will pay my year’s
salary as Foundation Treasurer.” The Foundation Board has discussed the possibility of supplementing the fund which became
depleted when the market crisis hit. Gerry Aust thanked Dr. Baick
on behalf of the club for his “most generous contribution”.

ROSE MARY KOVACS’ SURPRISE
Santa finished with the younger kids, and called Rose Mary over to
his lap. Gerry Aust , who had acting as Santa’s Elf, brought a package
and advised Rose Mary to open it now. Inside was a n album showing
pictures from the twelve years she has served the clubs. Then Gerry
approached her with an envelope with a $100 credit from Nieuport 17
Restaurant. A subsequent envelope was given her with an assortment
of $50 gift certificates. President Aust thanked her for her service to
Rotary in the Santa Ana Club and subsequently in the Tustin-Santa Ana
Club.
