Students are awarded the maximum amount for all available

Students taking only classes in Transitional Studies (Basic Academic Skills), Child & Family Studies, First Aid, or self-support
classes are not subject to residency requirements.

What is offered in the Department of Transitional Studies?
Instructional methods include individual, group, and computer-aided instruction.
• Classes include: basic reading, writing, and math, GED preparation, computer literacy,
and English as a Second Language classes at all levels.
• I-BEST programs allow students to start preparing for their career while still working
on college readiness, ESL, or GED classes.

Who can enroll?
Anyone who is 16 years of age or older and not enrolled in high school who needs
instruction in reading, writing, math, or ESL below the level of high school completion
is eligible to enroll.
How do I enroll?

1 Orientation: Learn program expectations, goal setting, and college awareness.
Allow 3 hours for each orientation session.
2 CASAS Assessment: This test provides information about your reading and math or
listening skills that helps the instructor meet your needs.
3 Class Attendance: Regular attendance and progress toward your goals are expected.
Tuition of $25.00 per quarter is required for all ABE, ESL, and GED classes.

ESL: English as a Second Language
ESL classes are for students who need to improve their English skills to enroll in college,
or succeed in the workplace or American culture. Placement testing is required.
GED Testing
A new version of the GED is in place in Washington State and is offered exclusively on
computers. Past test scores do not transfer to the new test. New GED examinees and
examinees that did not successfully complete all GED tests before 2014 may register for
exams by going online at www.ged.com. The new version of the GED contains four
subject areas: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and
Social Studies. Each exam is $30, payable via credit or debit card at time of registration.
Examinees who need assistance with test registration and/or do not have a credit or
debit card to process payment may contact the BTC Department of Transitional Studies.
GED exams are generally offered each weekday. Schedules are available online at time
of registration. GED candidates must be at least 16 years of age. Those 19 years of age
or younger must bring a completed Request for Approval to Test form (available at high
school main offices). Candidates must present government-issued photo identification
at time of testing. Further information regarding test site location, accommodations and
