Drugs classified as hallucinogens can distort a person’s sense of reality. The hallucinogen
drug category is for multiple “psychedelic drugs”. Each drug has its own unique effects on
the person who is using it, but all drugs in this category change the way people see, hear,
taste, smell and can affect their mood and thought process. The most commonly used
hallucinogens are LSD (a colorless, tasteless, odorless acid), Magic Mushrooms (mushroom containing psilocin and psilocybin), Salvia Divinorum Plant (leaves resembling sage
from the Salvia herb) and Ketamine (anesthetic found in both liquid and powder forms).
Method of use:
LSD (acid): Mushrooms: Salvia: Ketamine: LSD is usually swallowed and often used by soaking small squares of paper (known as acid blotter) in LSD; can be inhaled, snorted or ingested
Eaten alone, mixed with food or tea
Most commonly smoked
Ingested orally, injected, smoked and snorted
Effects of Hallucinogen use:
• Heart Rate Increase
• Distortion of Time
• Illusions
• Feelings of Power & Strength
• Hallucinations of seeing, feeling, hearing are
intensified
After effects:
• Spaced out
• Flash backs • Insomnia
Signs of Hallucinogen use:
• Nausea
• Chills
• Deep or Rapid Breathing
• Dilated Pupils
• Muscle Weakness
• Tingling
• Loss of Appetite
• Dizziness
• Sweating
• Bizarre or Inappropriate Behavior
The length of a high varies depending on the type and
quantity of hallucinogen.
LSD: Effects begin one hour after first use and can last up to 12 hours
Mushrooms: Effects begin within 30 minutes to 1 hour and last 2-6 hours
Salvia: Effects begin within 10 minutes and last for 1 hour or less
Ketamine: Effects take place within 10 minutes and last for about 1 hour
