The Rhythm Syndicate … Leon and the Reckless
Allstars to Play Harpersfield Vineyard
When you’ve been around almost 10
years you must be doing something right. The
Rhythm Syndicate have clearly been doing
just that since the mid 90’s, when guitarists
Pat Sandy and Angelo Ciu first met up at one
of the many jam sessions that dotted the nascent mid-90’s Cleveland blues scene. It was
there that the idea to form a band was hatched
and recruiting began. It didn’t take long to
find like-minded hepcats and soon, the bluesy,
finger-poppin’, swing-a-rama sound of The
Rhythm Syndicate was established.
Sandy and Ciu are joined by the twin-tenor sax sounds of Dan Wenninger and Ian Early
and the lock-step drumming of John Yencha.
The band is further rounded out with Lincoln
Adams in the bass chair.
Together, The Rhythm Syndicate can
light up a club in ferocious swingin’ fashion,
and suddenly take it down to a whisper without breaking a sweat. They’ll throw in the occasional rock classic, and after satisfying that
itch, head right back to blues... or maybe some
swing, or even a touch ‘o jazz...all guaranteed
to get feet moving and bellies rubbing.
They could be the hardest working band
in town. But even if that title’s disputed, the
Rhythm Syndicate are certainly one of the
smoothest in C-town. Their second full-length
release, On the Case and In Your Face was
recorded live at
The Savannah
(Westlake)
in November
of last year
and currently
available only
at their live
shows. It stands
to reason that
this set was
recorded at The
Savannah because the seeds of the The Rhythm Syndicate
were planted when guitarists Pat Sandy and
Angelo Ciu first met up at one of the club’s
many Thursday night jam sessions. The band’s
hepcat-minded, blues-swinging fun is best
served live and if you’re looking for a zootsuit riot, this group has your best interests in
mind. On the Case... is a little bit o’ laid back
blues, swing n’soul and R&B and if you’re not
finger-poppin’ after the first couple of tracks,
well, to quote the film Beautiful Girls, we
might have to check your freezer for human
heads.
F.F.O: (For fans of): Barflies, classic blues
and jazz, and the movie Swingers.

Leon and the Reckless Allstars are playing
the Blues by their own Rules!
Smokin, Souful Guitar & Infectious R&
B Grooves. This band Grabs by the throat and
never lets go. Imagine Hendrix, Clapton , B.B.
& Albert KIng mixed together with a relentless passion for the blues and you have the
sound of Reckless Allstars. The Blues played
with an intensity that not only moves your feet
but grips your soul.
Reckless--marked by lack of proper
caution: careless of consequences. But what
would you expect from a guy who is right
handed but plays southpaw cause that’s the
way Hendrix did it? After many years of
rocking Northeast Ohio as part of Qwik Silver (a band he co-founded) Waddell “Leon”
Johnson felt there were things he needed to
say and that the time to say them was now.
Playing the blues with a maturity and
personal style that immediately grabs the
listener, the musicianship, smooth vocals,
and originality of the Allstars makes it clear
this band means business. Writing songs
based around life struggles and joys The
Reckless Allstars without a doubt can play
The Blues!
It’s not often that an Artist can bring
you a sound which is fresh and new, yet
feels so familiar. Whether it’s a “Stones” cover
or a original, Leon and the Reckless Allstars
do just that! The band (as a unit) might be new
but these guys are seasoned musicians who
have played the north-coast for years.

Hybrid vs Cross vs Blend
One area which often confuses new wine
drinkers is how a wine becomes a blend, a
cross or a hybrid. It really is quite simple
when you sit down and discuss the three!
Blend
When you have a finished wine which is a
blend, it means two or more different grape
sets went into that wine. You can have a
multi-year blend. For example, if a winery
picks Merlot grapes in 2002, then again in
2003, then again in 2004, they might create a
multi-year blend of “merlot wine” which has
grape juice from all three years. Why would
a winery do this? Every year’s harvest is different. If one year had a lot of sun, the grapes
would taste different than in the subsequent
year when there was a lot of rain. By blending
together wines from a number of years, the
winemaker can even out the flavors and reach
some sort of ideal flavor.
You can also have a multi-grape-type
blend. Bordeaux is a prime example of this.
When you buy a wine from Bordeaux, it is
typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot and Cabernet Franc in varying percentages. One year they might use 50% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. Another year they
might use 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25%
Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc. It is all dependent on the weather conditions for the year,
how well the grapes grew and what combination tastes best for that year.
Cross
In horticulture a cross is a child of any
two parents - but in winemaking a cross is
specifically a child of any two SAME SPECIES plants. You create the cross of pinot
noir and cinsault and have as a “child” the
plant pinotage. Both of the parents are in the
vitis vinifera species, so the child is also vitis
vinifera. Really, knowing what the parents of
a given vine are are not that important but it is
important to know what a cross is, even if only
to understand what, therefore a hybrid is.
Hybrid
In winemaking a hybrid is only a cross of
two DIFFERENT SPECIES plants. For some
wine drinkers, the only good wines are wines
of the vitis vinifera species. These are the
traditional European wines such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and so
on. These wines are thought to have the best
flavors in wine (by those snobs). They look
down on wines made from other species, such
as the vitis labrusca species. Concord would
be an example of a vitis labrusca grape. Vitis
Labrusca comes from the eastern United
States while vitis vinifera comes from Europe.
So if you made a “cross” of vitis vinifera
grapes, like mixing Cinsault and Pinot Noir,
you get a vitis vinifera child, Pinotage. Purists would say this child is just as tasty as its
parents because it is a pure breed. In comparison if you “crossed the streams” and mixed
a vitis vinifera mother with a Vitis Labrusca
father, you would get a “hybrid”. It is almost
as if they consider the hybrid child tainted by
the vitis labrusca influence. Rumor has it that
the EU has banned all hybrid grapes from their
countries. They only want people growing
purebred Vitis Vinifera grapes on their lands.
Hybrids can be grown very well in places that
vitis vinifera grapes cannot grow, and they
have a wide range of flavors.
It is important to understand the difference between these three wine terms, so that
when you see a bottle of wine and it is labeled
as one or the other you know what it means.
However, in the end a wine is a wine and
should stand on its own merit. It should not
matter who the “parents” of a given wine are.
It should only matter if you personally enjoy
it, and if you do, how you can get your hands
on more.

PENNSYLVANIA BLUES FESTIVAL
July 30th – July 31
When the long-running Poconos
Blues Festival was cancelled for 2011 due to
economic reasons after an amazing
almost two decade-long run, blues
fans in Pennsylvania were sorely
left out in the cold. After 19 annual
events, the Poconos Festival had
grown to become one of the most
popular shindigs on the east coast,
drawing a reported 12,000 music
lovers each year from thirty states
and ten foreign countries.
After the disappointment,
though, comes a ray of sunshine in
the form of original Poconos Blues
Festival promoter Michael Cloeren,
who has resurrected the left-fordead event as the Pennsylvania
Blues Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, July 30th and Sunday, July
31st, 2011 at the Blue Mountain Ski Area’s
Valley Lodge, the first annual Pennsylvania
Blues Festival will feature 15 artists performing on two stages over the weekend event. The
festival kicks off with a Friday night pre-festival jam by Chicago bluesman Studebaker John
& the Hawks.
Cloeren has put together an impressive
line-up of performers for the 2011 Penn-

Other performers featured

Saturday and Sunday also feature a second

Nemeth, Samuel James, Linsey Alexander,
Big Daddy Stallings, the Lee Boys, and Steve
Guyger and Billy Flynn.
Festival Headline Artists
John Nemeth is one of the hardest
working bluesmen in the business today,
honing his craft a couple hundred nights a
year on the road, backed by a crack band of
talented players. Three albums released by the
noted Blind Pig Records – including 2010’s
acclaimed Name The Day! – have brought
Nemeth worldwide attention and accolades,
including 2011 Blues Music Award nominations for “Contemporary Blues Album of the
Year” and “Contemporary Blues Male Artist
of the Year.” Nemeth’s old-school blend of
blues, soul, and R&B have captured audience’s imagination, and while we’ll have to
wait a few more months for a new album from
the singer, his talents can be heard on Elvin
Bishop’s 2011 live album, Raisin’ Hell Revue.
The one and only Shemekia Copeland
is a youthful veteran of the worldwide blues
scene. The daughter of legendary blues guitarist Johnny Copeland, she began singing at the
tender age of 8 years old, and was opening
shows for her father when she was 16 years
old. Copeland’s debut album, Turn The Heat
Up! was released by Alligator Records in
1998, framing the teenage talent as a soulful
blues-belter in the vein of Koko Taylor. The
singer has since released four more criticallyacclaimed, award-winning discs; Copeland’s
latest, 2009’s Never Going Back, further
expanded her sound as well as her global
audience. Alligator released Deluxe Edition, a
compilation of Copeland’s best performances
for the label, in early 2011.

fight hunger over its sixteen years. The Festival takes place each year in July at Hartwood
Acres, one of Allegheny County’s prettiest
parks located in Hampton Township. Entertainment includes a full line-up of national and
local blues music; food and merchandise vendors; and a KidZone with arts and crafts, blues
for kids, games and healthy snacks. There is
simply not a more exciting, family-friendly or

The 17th Annual Festival is scheduled
for July 22-24, 2011, once again at Hartwood
Acres. The Saturday night headliner will be
the Tedeschi Trucks Band, the husband-wife
team of Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks,
who recently moved from hugely successful
careers as individuals to a joint venture. Their
upcoming release Revelator has already been
greeted with wild acclaim.
Other guests for the Pittsburgh Blues
Festival include long-time blues veteran
Tommy Castro and Lionel Young Band. Castro has played at the Blues Festival in the past,
and Young has an early Pittsburgh connection.
The Blues Festival also retains its free Friday
opening night. This year’s theme is “Girl’s
Night Out,” featuring headliner Janiva Magness, Kelly Richey and a collection of some
of Pittsburgh’s favorite women of the blues.
Magness was just nominated for four awards
at the 2011 Blues Music Awards, including
Best Album. That release, “The Devil is an
Angel, Too,” is also Living Blues magazine’s
No. 1 title on the chart of the best 50 blues
albums of the year.

records in 1969, Johnny immediately laid
out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic
blues — a prime combination for the legions
of fans just discovering the blues via the likes
of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly
shifting between simple country blues in the
vein of Robert Johnson, to all-out electric
slide guitar blues-rock - Johnny has always
been one of the most respected singers and
guitar players in rock and the clear link
between British blues-rock and American
Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and
Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the ‘70s and
‘80s, Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer
for the blues, championing and aiding the
careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and
John Lee Hooker.
His recent Grammy nominated “I’m A
Bluesman” disc Virgin/EMI, has only added
10
to his Texas-sized reputation.
“I’m A Bluesman” was a question of finding the time and right material, he says. The
13-track collection includes three tunes by
his friend and 2nd guitarist Paul Nelson, who
writes with Winter’s bassist Scott Spray. They
collaborated on the prison-themed “Shakedown”, a relationship-gone-bad song titled
“Pack Your Bags” and the album’s title track,
which Nelson describes as a Johnny Winter
biography set to music. “I wanted to write a
song about his life, who he is, and what he
represents to other musicians. I’m really proud
that when he heard the song he said I’d gotten
it right.”
Winter also opted to record two new
songs by producer, Hambridge, “Cheatin’
Blues” and the first album single, Lone Wolf.”
Johnny and his players cut the tracks for
“I’m A Bluesman” at several studios in New
England, where Winter makes his home these
days. But Winter remains a native
Texan, born and bred in Beaumont, the town where the famous
Spindletop gusher came in to kick
off the “black gold” rush in 1901.
Growing up in rough-and-tumble
town populated by oilfield wildcatters and shipyard workers, he spent
long hours listening to a local deejay
named J.P. Richardson - The Big
Bopper of “Chantilly Lace” fame
- and became hooked on 50’s rock
& roll. He formed his first band,
Johnny and the Jammers, in 1959 at
the age of 15, with his 12-year-old
brother Edgar on keyboards.
Racial tensions in Beaumont
were still high in those days. The
town had been side to one of the
worst race riots in Texas history
just nine months before Johnny’s
birth. Mobs wandered the streets,
businesses burned, martial law went
into effect, and more than 2,000
uniformed National Guardsmen
and Texas Rangers sealed off the
town from the rest of the world until
tempers cooled. Despite the brutal
legacy, Johnny remembers never
hesitating as a kid to venture into
black neighborhoods to hear and
play music.
Looking back, he believes
people in the black community knew
that he was sincere, that he was
genuinely possessed by the blues.
“Nothing ever happened to me. I
went to black clubs all the time, and
nobody ever bothered me. I always
felt welcome.” He also became
friends with Clarence Garlow, a deejay at the black radio station KJET in
Beaumont. Who opened Winter’s eye’s and
ears to rural blues and Cajun music.
There’s a famous story about a time in
1962 when Johnny and his brother went to
see B.B. King at a Beaumont club called the
Raven. The only whites in the crowd, they
no doubt stood out. But Johnny already had
his chops down and wanted to play with the
revered B.B.”I was about 17,” Johnny remembers, “and B.B. didn’t want to let me on stage
at first. He asked me for a union card, and I
had one. Also I kept sending people over to
ask him to let me play. Finally, he decided that
there enough people who wanted to hear me
that, no matter if I was good or not, it would
be worth it to let me on stage. He gave me his
guitar and let me play. I got standing ovation,
and he took his guitar back!”
Winter’s big breakthrough came a few
years later in 1968 when Rolling Stone writers
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
Larry Sepulvado and John Burks featured him
in a piece on the Texas Music scene, which
prompted a bidding war among labels that
Columbia eventually won. Johnny’s self-titled
1969 disc announced loudly that there was a
new guitar-slinger on the new national scene.
The disc included audacious covers such blues
classics as B.B. King’s “Be Careful with a
Fool,” Sonny Boy Williamson II’s “Good
Morning Little School Girl,” Robert Johnson’s
“When You Got a Good Friend” and fellow
Texan Lightin’ Hopkins’ “Back Door Friend.”
It also featured two prime original Winter
songs, “Dallas” and the controversial “I’m
Yours and I’m Hers,” that went into heavy
rotation on FM underground radio.
The album peaked at No.24 on the
billboard chart and was promptly followed by
Second Winter later that same year. Looking
back, writer Cub Koda described the period
as one when “Straight out of Texas with a hot
trio, Winter made blues-rock music for the
angels.” That trio, by the way, included bassist
Tommy Shannon who would go on to be part
of SRV’s Double Trouble and drummer Uncle
John Turner.
He’s also done recent guest spots on a
forthcoming Sly Stone album (Johnny does
guitar and vocals on Sly’s updated version of
his hit “Thank You”) and William Shatner’s
soon-to-be-released album, “Seeking Major
Tom.” Johnny plays some absolutely mesmerizing slide guitar on Mr. Shatner’s version of
the Deep Purple classic, “Space Truckin’.”
The legendary Johnny Winter will release his
new studio album entitled Roots on September
27, 2011 via Megaforce Records. This album
returns Johnny to his roots by paying homage
to the iconic blues heroes whose pioneering music influenced Winter’s own signature
sound and style. Roots is the follow up to his
Grammy-nominated I’m a Blues Man.
A host of special guests join Winter
trading licks in honoring his idols, including
Sonny Landreth, Vince Gill, Warren Haynes,
John Popper, Jimmy Vivino, Derek Trucks,
Susan Tedeschi, John Medeski and Johnny’s
brother Edgar Winter.
Among the 11 tracks that together
represent a veritable history of the Blues, are
songs by the genre’s elder statesmen including
a version of Robert Johnson’s 1936 recording “Dust My Broom.” Winter pays respect
to the greats who came to prominence in the
late 1940s and 50s.This special project was
directed by famed guitarist Paul Nelson who’s
role is as both producer and performer on this
recording.
ohnny is performing in Cleveland at Beachland Balllroom on Wednesday, July 27.

It seems that the nicer the weather becomes, the more quickly the summer passes.
Yes this summer may have gotten off to an
awfully damp start, but there have been many
warm, wonderful days in the past few weeks.
I’m not sure how, but those warm sunny days
somehow slip away just a bit quicker than the
cloudy, rainy days do. So remember to take
full advantage of these precious days of summer. There are still plenty of opportunities
to attend local festivals and outdoor summer
concert events, and also many locations featuring live entertainment on the outdoor stage.
As you look ahead at your summer
calendar and make plans for the upcoming
weekends, be sure to highlight the first weekend in August. This weekend of course, as has
been the case for the past 17 years, is host to
the granddaddy of all North Coast festivals.
The event to which I am referring is, none
other than, Vintage Ohio 2011, taking place
on Friday,
August 5th
and Saturday, 6th.
Every
summer
people
from all
around the
country
travel to
The Lake
Metroparks Farmpark in Kirtland, Ohio, to
attend Vintage Ohio. This year, 24 wineries from around the state will offer wines
for tasting and for purchase at this 2-day
extravaganza. In addition to the wineries
in attendance there will be nearly 100 other
participants, including restaurants, crafters
and exhibitors. When you combine great
food, wonderful wines, outdoor activities and
beautiful artwork, you have the makings of
an amazing festival. The one remaining piece
of the puzzle is, of course, live entertainment.
Rest assured, the Ohio Wine Producers Association has always made sure that the music
has played from start to finish of each fun
filled day of the festival.
The gates open at 1 pm. both Friday
and Saturday and the festivities continue
until 10 pm. The music will begin at 1:30
and continue until 9:45 pm. both days, on 3
different stages. There will be a variety of
musical styles available throughout the event,
featuring some of the Cleveland areas most
recognizable groups. I would like to bring
special attention though, to a few names that I
feel any jazz enthusiast should be aware of.

WXEG and Live Nation are proud to
present X-FEST 2011 featuring STAIND,
THEORY OF A DEADMAN, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, ALTERBRIDGE,
SKILLET, ADELITAS WAY, KOPEK,
BLACKSTONE CHERRY, EMPHATIC
& DOWNPLAY at the Montgomery County
Fairgrounds in Dayton, Ohio on Sunday, Sept.
18, 2011. Doors open at 11 a.m.
“We’re proud to offer up another solid
lineup of X bands and another fun-filled, crazy, rockin’ day at the Fairgrounds! Get ready
Southwest Ohio,,,X-FEST 2011 is coming!!!”
said WXEG Program Director ‘Kramer.’
STAIND
Staind is touring in support of a self-titled
album set for release Sept. 13. Of “Eyes Wide
Open” – one of the track’s off the album,
artistdirect.com said: “Opening with an ominous bass spark from Johnny “Old School”
April, the song pushes and pulls as a tribally
dangerous drum beat mounts. Suddenly, Mike
Mushok’s guitar tears through the rhythmic
haze with a precisely punishing riff that’s
heavier than anything the band has ever cut to
tape. The guitar thrashes from speedy battering into a seesawing verse riff.
“Psychotically shifting from an anxious
near-whisper into a harrowing scream, Aaron
Lewis conjures demons that unsettle and
unhinge in the most violently catchy manner.
Everything drops into an infectious chorus
where Lewis sings, “Is compromise something
you don’t understand? Don’t force my hands
when my eyes are wide open.” It’s poignantly
pummeling, drawing on Dysfunction and Tormented’s most tortured elements while delivering them with a mind blowing instrumental
prowess and true, tough vocal delivery.”
THEORY OF A DEADMAN
Theory of a Deadman joins X-fest 2011
on a short break from the Carnival of Madness
tour (with Alter Bridge, Black Stone Cherry,
Adelitas Way and Emphatic). Honesty is
always the best policy. Theory of a Deadman
adheres to that age old adage on their fourth
album for Roadrunner/604 Records, The Truth
Is…
The platinum-selling Vancouver quartet
builds arena-ready hooks around hard rocking
stories of good times, bad times and everything in between. “Lowlife,” is a raucous
anthem celebrating simple pleasures. Meanwhile, “The Bitch Came Back” gives a hilarious send-off to a bad ex with roaring guitars
and flourishes of horns. “Hurricane” stirs up
a storm of emotions over an orchestral hum
of guitars and massive chorus. Then there’s
“Head Above Water,” which delivers an
uplifting, contemplative message encased in
mid-tempo rhythms. Theory of a Deadman—
Tyler Connolly [Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar],
David Brenner [Rhythm Guitar], Dean Back
[Bass], Joey Dandeneau [Drums]—are telling
July 13 - 27, 2011
the whole truth and nothing but the truth, like
it or not.
For The Truth Is…, Theory of a Deadman
preserved the sound that fans worldwide have
grown to love on Scars & Souvenirs [2008],
Gasoline [2005], and Theory of a Deadman
[2002], while expanding, enhancing, and
evolving their approach. The band solidified
their place at the top of modern hard rock by
exceeding Platinum sales with their breakthrough Scars & Souvenirs and with #1 Mainstream Rock Radio hit “Bad Girlfriend.”At the
same time, other singles, “So Happy” and “By
The Way,” became crowd favorites on tours
with everyone from Mötley Crüe and Godsmack to Daughtry and label mates Stone Sour.
For The Truth Is… the band stuck to what
works best and are taking it to the next level.
FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH
Five Finger Death Punch’s forthcoming
album was named one of “The Most Anticipated Albums for 2011” by artistdirect.com,
who said of the band: “5FDP have established
themselves as the preeminent metal band to
emerge in the last five years. Having sold almost one million albums worldwide in an era
when metal bands simply don’t do that is quite
incredible. But then, when you hear Death
Punch’s penchant for melding melody, vocal
hooks and pure aggression, it all makes sense.
Expect their third album later this year, and
expect it to be one of the biggest rock albums
of the year.”
After 3 years of heavy-duty groundwork supporting their highly successful debut album
(The Way Of The Fist in 2006), Five Finger
Death Punch entered the ring for Round Two
with War Is the Answer in September 2009.
Both albums have gone RIAA certified gold.
The Los Angeles quintet known for their devastating live shows had embarked on quite a
journey to get to this point and to become one
of the most important bands of recent metal
history. The newcomers of 2007 climbed a
steep mountain in the last couple of years
and fought for every inch of their success,
but today they play sold out shows, headline
prestigious festivals and command an army of
die-hard fans across the globe.

Cleveland native, Billy Sullivan has
been part of the music scene for over thirty
years, which started while he was in his
teens. “I am the youngest of six and the
music from the 60s was the sound track to
our lives,” he said. “I was raised on that

music. My mom was somewhat of a bluegrass
musician but never pursued it professionally
although she should have because she was
good enough. We listened to all the British
Invasion bands, too. There was quite a musical
palette to choose from in our house.”
Billy started out playing drums before
switching to guitar. “I did play drums in
school,” he said. “My brother was a drummer
in a band as well but sold the drum set when
he went into the Navy. If he had not sold the
drum set then I probably would have still
played the drums. I mainly play guitar now.”
Billy remembers the first song he learned to
play on the guitar, which was, The Little Black
Egg.
As a teenager, Billy already knew that a
career in music was his calling, “I remember looking at record jackets of different
bands and knew in my heart that this is what
I wanted to do with my life,” he recalls. “I
started playing in nightclubs when I was
about 13 years old. I had very understanding

parents and they came with me, of course.
Back then, either you played in a garage band
or you played sports. Rock and Roll bands and
club bands were thriving in those days and I
wanted desperately to be part of that.”
Billy has quite an extensive rock and
roll resume that began with playing in The
Paul Pope Band. “I
remember going to
concerts and hoping
that someday I would
be the one onstage,” he
remembers. “Playing
with The Paul Pope
Band was the start of
the reality I had wanted.
Paul had a huge following and we were able to
play concert venues and
open for national acts.
I remember the first
famous band we opened
for was Triumph. It was
June of 1979 and the
concert was in Buffalo, New York. In my
opinion, I had made the
big time. I had arrived!
There was a fan base
for us in Buffalo, too. I
remember hearing that
the bass player for The Goo Goo Dolls (Robby
Takac) would come and see us since he lived
in Buffalo.”
Traveling to Buffalo in those early days
was made possible when everyone chipped in
to buy a Winnebago. “It was a four-way split
to purchase it,” said Billy. “Each of us lived in
a different part of the Cleveland-Akron area
so we would meet up then hit the road. When
we had outdoor venue gigs, we actually lived
in it. We did that nearly
every week from June
1979 until late 1981.”
Billy continues,
“The whole reason why
I got into this business
was so that I could be
in a rock and roll band.
Things evolve and
change as time passes.
I did have a song that
was popular locally
and did receive some
national airplay, Never
Again (Without You)
in 1986, which was
co-written with Walt
Nims who also wrote
Precious and Few. I
started to see however
that things weren’t quite

tours again. We all know that rock and roll is
very youth-oriented and I was already in my
mid-twenties then. I was very happy being the
sideman. In my mind, I had made the decision
that it was better for me to do that. I’m a good
guy to have in your band.” (laughs)
Billy has no regrets with his decision.
“I’m very happy being the guy in the back. I
knew I would still be working as a side guy
when I got older. Whenever I come back
home to Cleveland to do some of my solo
performances, it gives me an opportunity to
show my work but I’m happy doing what I am
doing. Starting out with Gary Lewis and The
Playboys gave me the opportunity to do what I
love doing and continue to play with some incredible acts. I was with Gary for 23 years. We
were on many reunion tours so you’re always
meeting people and interacting.”
Eventually the schedule for Gary Lewis
was not as full. “His schedule became thinner
of his choosing and as a side man, it does
depend on the quantity of work that you get,”
said Billy. “You don’t share in any royalties or
merchandise sales with an artist and I wanted
to keep playing. Around that time is when
Rich Spina was telling me that Peter Noone
was looking for another guitar player. Peter
contacted me and asked me to play for him to
keep with the original Herman’s Hermits band
tradition of having two guitar players. He understood that I needed to finish my show dates
with Gary and suggested I play for him when
those dates were done. I didn’t want to leave
Gary in a bad way. It is a business but you
also establish friendships, too. I was Gary’s
drummer for the last five years that I was with
him. Times change and music changes right
along with it. Nostalgic groups now are more

focused on the 70s groups instead of the 60s
groups. For 60s groups, Peter Noone is probably at the top of the heap for the 60s circuit.”
What does it feel like to play with one of
the 60s British Invasion classics? “I’m glad to
be part of it,” said Billy. “I grew up with these
records but at the same time it’s my job and I
have to play the professional role.”
Even though he lives in Chicago, Billy
still returns to Cleveland as often as possible.
“I’m proud to be part of the music scene here.
Cleveland will always be home no matter
where I am.” Speaking of Cleveland, we have
heard many times over the years the jingle for
the IX Center Indoor Amusement Park
on which Billy is doing the familiar
vocals. “George Sipl wrote the jingle,”
explains Billy. “It was back in 1993
when he asked me if I would sing it.
Jingles usually run their course but
this has hung on for all these years so
if that’s my legacy in Cleveland, then
so be it!”
When time permits, Billy does
solo shows at various venues, assisted
living and nursing home facilities. “I
love doing those kinds of shows, too. I
gear the music toward the 50s. It seems
to make the residents day and I enjoy
seeing that. Now that I live in Chicago,
I am trying to get out there and do the
same thing. I also play in a Chicago
area band called, Acoustic Avenue. I
do gigs as well with Jimy Sohns who
had the hit, Gloria with his band, Shadows of Knight. I am still staying true
to myself and what I mean by that is I
have no desire to learn music by Lady Gaga
or Britney Spears just to keep up to date with
who or what is popular at the moment because
that’s not me.”

Celebrations of the Irish Aren’t Just For St. Patrick’s Day
The 29th Annual Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival July 22-24
Cleveland’s
Irish Cultural
Festival seeks
to preserve,
memorialize
and document Irish
History and
Traditions
-- from
the gentle
stirrings of the
harp, to the boom
and pomp of the
pipe bands; from
the soft hush of
our love songs, to
the thunder of Celtic
dancers and rock bands. Spurred by the vision
of founder John O’Brien Sr., over 300 volunteers mobilize annually to breath life into the
festival. We are blessed that the culture we
celebrate boasts such a wealth of tradition,
music, literature, and art -- all bound together
by that rich sense of community which typifies the Irish. Though difficult to adequately
encapsulate, following is a brief overview of
the festival and its many attractions.
Cleveland’s Irish Cultural Festival is a
non-profit, annual civic event, benefiting local
and national charities while highlighting the
many aspects of our Irish culture. Attractions include: 24 performers on nine stages,
a multitude of exhibits, and myriad kiosks
representing some of the finest vendors in the
United States.
Our festival boasts a wonderful assortment of family activities, including the
following:
Children’s Area and petting zoo
Byrne McCaffrey Workshops & Stage
Celtic Rock Stage
Two outdoor and seven indoor stages
24 Performers, Pipe Bands and Entertainers
An Irish Coffee House
Four award winning Irish plays each day
Fresh exhibits each year ~ there is always
something new and interesting to learn about
Irish culture
Over 50 Irish Vendors offering authentic Irish
goods, foods and crafts
An outdoor Mass on Sunday
Native Irish Dog Show
As a country, Ireland has produced some
of the finest novelists, poets, playwrights and
musicians in the world. Fortunately, a good
number of her dislocated progeny landed in
Cleveland. The result? -- some of the most
highly acclaimed Irish American artists call
Cleveland home. Taken as a whole, perhaps
Cleveland’s greatest contribution to perpetuating Irish culture has been musical. From
20
The New Barleycorn, to Brigid’s Cross, from
Tap The Bow, to The Northcoast Pipe Band
and Turn the Corner. Like blues, traditional
Irish music is a source of inspiration for many
of today’s rock and country artists -- deeply
indebted as these forms are to the melodic and
sometimes raucous influence of Erin’s ballads
and reels.
Below is a partial list of performers slated to
appear at the 2011 Cleveland Irish Cultural
Festival.

Leave Your Passports at Home and Experience Authentic Irish Culture at the 24th
Annual Dublin Irish Festival
The 24th Annual Dublin Irish Festival,
August 5, 6 & 7, 2011 is a one-of-a-kind event
that offers guests the unique opportunity to experience authentic Irish art, entertainment, and
culture without the cost of traveling to Ireland.
An amazing value, tickets are available for
only $10 per ticket, or a weekend pass for $23.
With seven stages, 65 acts and more than 535
performers, The Dublin Irish Festival provides
guests of all musical tastes the opportunity to
experience some of the biggest names in Irish
music. Not to mention authentic Irish dancing,
sports, cultural exhibits, and delicious Irish
fare and beverages.
If music is the universal language, the
2011 Dublin Irish Festival in Dublin, Ohio,
USA speaks to each and every guest in sweet
or rocking rhythms to hear, feel and love.
Festival organizers are serious about providing
a weekend of all things Irish.
This 29-acre music mecca is “Like
Ireland, Except Smaller.” However, there is
nothing small about the 2011 Dublin Irish
Festival with its seven stages, 75 acts and 535
performances.
The Dublin Irish Festival provides guests,
of all musical tastes, the opportunity to experience some of the biggest names in Irish music
during three exciting days on August 5, 6 and
7.
Legendary performer Moya Brennan, a
former member of Clannad, one of the biggest
Celtic acts in history, will grace a Festival
stage this year. Known as the “First Lady of
Celtic Music,” Moya is a Grammy-nominated
Irish folksinger, songwriter, harpist and philanthropist.
Fiddle master Liz Carroll attends for her
second time. Liz was recently honored as the
first American to ever win “Composer of the
Year” in Ireland’s Traditional Music Awards.
What can be better than great solos? Try a
great duo. Having appeared in previous Festivals as solo acts, Karan Casey and John Doyle
both return but for the first time as a duo. The
double talents joined to form the band Solas,
whose 2010 release “Exiles Return” made a
large splash in the Celtic music world.
Appearing for the eighth time in 10 years,
Gaelic Storm has firmly established itself as
a Festival favorite. Catapulted onto the music
scene after appearing in the blockbuster film
Titanic, the group’s career shot off, gaining
more fans and accolades each year.
In addition to the above legendary artists, Teada, Dervish and Beoga, some of the
top bands in Ireland, travel across the big pond
this August to entertain Festival guests.
A newer generation of Irish musicians will
convince listeners that Irish music talent
continues to grow. Goitse, a young group of
students from the School of Traditional Music
and Dance at the University of Limerick, joins
the Festival on its first U.S. tour.
For those hungering for a heavier flavor,
the Killian’s Celtic Rock Stage features some
of the best Celtic Rock bands around. The
Young Dubliners, Scythian and Barleyjuice all
return to this popular stage.
Making its first appearance at the Festival,
The Elders from Kansas City lists an impressive history of appearances at many festivals
throughout the country. Their fans organized
an intensive, multi-year, internet campaign to
insure this band would be included this year.
No Dublin Irish Festival is complete without
bagpipes. This year’s featured band will be
Cleveland’s North Coast Pipe Band, which
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
placed fourth in its category at the world
championships in Glasgow in 2010. The Tansky Toyota Greenfields Sports Area plays host
to bagpipe dexterity throughout the weekend.
Individual Central Ohio bands perform on
Saturday with a group performance of all eight
bands slated for Sunday.
The perfect spice for music served up
by the Dublin Irish Festival is the fast-paced,
quick-stepping flavor of Irish dance.
This year’s featured touring dance act,
StepCrew returns to the Festival to showcase
the members’ unique combination of fancy
footwork and fantastic fiddling. This group
showcases some of the Celtic world’s most
talented and well-respected musicians and
dancers for an exhilarating performance. It’s
one that should not be missed.
Whether new to the Festival or long-time
event veterans, guests will experience Irish
culture around every corner, across more than
29 acres of green space. New and unique
vendors join the event in the “Irish Arts Festival” that fills the Marketplace and Emerald
Arts Isle. Celtic goods are available in every
direction and include handcrafted art tiles and
necklaces, wall art and stained-glass, to name
a few.
Back by popular demand is the Wendy’s Wee
Folk Area featuring free activities and entertainment for kids! Bring your lads and lassies
over to create Irish inspired crafts, attend an
interactive dance lesson with award winning
Irish dancers, or bounce the day away at the
Pot ‘O Gold inflatable play land for $10.
Save a little green and experience the Festival
for FREE! Join us on Sunday, August 7 with
your donation of a non-perishable food item
to benefit the Dublin Food Pantry, and your
ticket is on us. Come experience a celebration
of faith by attending Sunday Services and support a great cause.
Get Involved
Strap on your running shoes and kick off the
event at the annual Dublin Irish Festival and
IGS Energy 5K on Thursday, August 4 at 7
p.m. Held in historic Dublin, more than 1,200
runners are expected to take to the streets to
celebrate the start of the Festival. Join the fun
after the 5K for the annual Dub Crawl featuring great food, shopping and live music.
The Dublin Irish Festival wouldn’t be possible
without an amazing team of dedicated volunteers. From admission gates to bike parking,
set up and tear down, volunteers are needed to
roll out the “green” carpet every year for the
guests.

How To Use Hooponopono To Revise,
Heal, And Improve Your Life
By Laurie Kristensen
Today I ran across a quote that really struck
me as a simple way to explain what we can do
when we practice the Hawaiian self-healing
art of spiritual growth and forgiveness called
ho’oponopono. The quote goes like this...
“It’s never too late -- in fiction or in life -- to
revise.” Nancy Thayer
You see, in Hawaiian, the word
HO’OPONOPONO means to make right, to
rectify an error.
Rectifying errors is usually a large part of any
revision process, whether in terms of writing
fiction OR in terms of clearing our subconscious minds of beliefs and unconscious
patterns of behavior that really do not serve us
and, in fact, sabotage our efforts to succeed in
all areas of our lives.
Practicing hooponopono CLEARS or
CLEANSES or ERASES our subconscious
mind of its “errors” -- limiting beliefs that are
based on unconscious memories, beliefs, and
patterns and which prevent us from living a
peaceful, happy, successful, abundant life.
Those limiting beliefs and unconscious
memories and patterns are formed as we have
lived our lives and interacted with our family
and others -- starting while in the womb,
and even originating in past lives -- and they
continuously build up upon themselves. That’s
because, as explained by the universal Law of
Attraction, “Whether wanted or unwanted, we
attract more of whatever vibration we offer in
every moment” (or, more simply, “like attracts
like”).
Therefore, we endlessly seem to gather more
and more evidence that life JUST IS a certain
way, and we may believe that we are powerless to change it. It may never even OCCUR
to us that life could be drastically different and
better!
We may find ourselves experiencing the same
“problems” over and over again, even while
interacting with different people, or even
whole communities of people like school
mates, work associates, or other members of
our church or spiritual group. We may attract
the same kinds of dysfunctional relationships
with lovers and close friends, or repeat the
same destructive ways of dealing with our
own children that we hated our parents for.
But, if we can REVISE what makes us keep
recreating the same experiences in different
ways with different people over and over and
over again, and get back to what some have
termed the “zero frequency” where Divine
guidance can clearly be heard, felt, or sensed,
then we can free ourselves to enjoy lives that
are much more joyous, peaceful, happy, and
abundant.
While ho’oponopono originated in ancient
Hawaii, it has recently also been “revised” -updated and simplified -- by teachers who are
well-known today like Joe Vitale (author of
“Zero Limits”), Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, and
Mabel Katz (author of “The Easiest Way”).
Each has made it their mission to help us use
hooponopono as a clearing tool with which we
can improve our own lives along with the help
of the Divine.
Thanks to the technology of today like the
Internet and digital information products, it’s
easy to delve into more instruction on using
ho’oponopono in our own lives in order to
REVISE what’s not working for us now into a
new state of consciousness that can empower
us to create lives that we can love!

By Luthier Patrick Podpadec
Summer is in full swing now and everybody is playing music. Everyone I talk to
lately is telling me about this concert or that
concert or “I’m playing there next week” or
“Are you coming to my gig tomorrow?” It
just seems that “music is in the air”. I know
that sounds cliché, but it’s true.
This is the time of the year that I get two
and three calls a day for some minor repairs.
Many of them have to do with truss rod
adjustments. You might have found that your
guitar’s neck has suddenly seemed to have
warped or bowed a little more than normal
lately. This is not uncommon for this time of
year. With the excessive humidity in the air
the guitars tend to absorb more than its fair
share of water into the wood. This will result
in some minor swelling of the top which
sometimes puts more pulling pressure on
the neck and can tend to “bow” it more than
usual. You might find that when you pull your
guitar out of its case that the strings are tuned
a little sharp. You would think that most of the
time that strings under tension would loosen
up or stretch which would make them go flat.
I’m not completely sure about why they go
sharp, but my guess is that the humidity swells
the wood enough to actually pull the strings
tighter. If this happens to your guitar, it’s by
no means the
end of the
world. It’s
very common
and can easily
be remedied
by a truss rod
adjustment.
There is a
long threaded
rod that runs
the length
of the neck
under the
fingerboard
that is there
for this very
reason. I
believe it was
the Gibson factory that started installing them
in their guitars in the 20’s and early 30’s when
more and more players were turning to steel
strings so they could get more volume from
their instruments. The steel strings obviously
put more tension on the necks and Gibson
designed the truss rod so that they would have
a way to adjust the neck back to its normal
playing condition after the neck would start to
pull up or bow due to all of the added tension.
It is a very ingenious
idea and has served
the guitar industry
well for many years.
There is a truss rod
in virtually every
guitar made today.
Except for classical
and flamenco guitars
(which don’t have the
added tension from
their nylon strings).
Even the very inexpensive instruments
come with truss rods
installed in them.
There are a few
different styles of
truss rods that could
be installed in your guitar. There is a single
rod with a nut on one end and a fixed end
(this means that the opposite end is somehow
“fixed” or stabilized from moving when the
nut is turned on the other end. By turning the
nut on the threaded end clockwise and the
other end not being able to move, the rod will

naturally start to bow which will bring the
neck back to being straight again. There is
also double rods and rods that can be adjusted
from either end (which are rare) and rods that
can be adjusted to take a bow out (clockwise)
or put one in by turning it counter clockwise.
Although this feature is rarely used it can
come in handy at times. I install the double
action truss rods in all of my guitars. Not
that I have ever had a neck of my guitars
develop what would be known as a “upbow”,
but I feel that it would be a lot easier to repair
the problem (if it were to ever occur) with
a truss rod of this type rather than having to
refret or possibly replace the warped neck.
Some caution should be taken when adjusting
the truss rod. Most articles that are written
about neck adjustments refer the readers to
seek out a professional luthier. It is very easy
to get yourself into trouble or to “over do it”.
The last thing you want to do is to break the
truss rod. I like to take the tension off of the
neck (by loosening the strings and then back
the rod off (counter clockwise) until there is
no tension at all. You can feel this because
the nut will be loose on the threaded rod. I
then start turning the nut clockwise until I feel
that there is some tension on the rod. I only
turn the nut about an eighth of a turn and then
check my progress of the neck. If you lay a
straight edge on top of the frets you can see
the neck starting to “flatten out”. You should
constantly be checking the neck with each
small turn of the nut. You will also start to notice that the tighter you go the harder it will be
to turn the nut. This is where it can get tricky.
Usually most factory setups allow a small
amount of “relief” in the neck. This is a small
amount of space or curvature if you will that
is left in the fingerboard (anywhere from .005
to .015 thousands) between the 5th and 9th or
10th fret. This relief is for the movement of
the string as it is being plucked. I would then
tune the guitar up to to A440 and then recheck
the neck. More than likely the bow has gotten larger than it was without tension on it.
Laying a straight edge on the frets you can
continue (very carefully!) turning the nut and
checking the straightness of the fingerboard.
If you have never attempted this procedure it
may be advantageous for you to ask a professional to give you a hand. Some may help or
teach you and some may not. I personally do
not have a problem with people trying to do
some of their own minor repairs. It gives me
more time to concentrate on the harder procedures that most people can’t and won’t try for
themselves. So if you are feeling “Lucky” try
to do it yourself and if not, call me at 440-474

Rootsmusicreport.com maintains a versatile
presence on the web and is a great place to
view indie and some mainstream artist CD
Reviews, airplay charts, and DJ Profiles for
those that support and play independent music from around the country, many of which

most genres of music are posted weekly.
As an introduction to the site we decided
to print one of their CD reviews below.
The Grascals and Friends: Country Classics with a Bluegrass Spin
The Nashville-based Grascals are clearly
a sturdy, durable group with a clear vision and
cohesive business plan. When the band formed
in 2004, their commercial and award-winning
approach to music was probably initially
conceived and developed as a result of band
members’ many years of prior experience with
the likes of country music stars Reba McIntyre, Garth Brooks, Steve Wariner, Osborne
Brothers, Dolly Parton, Ricky Van Shelton
and others. So ever since the Grascals released
their 2004 grassified rendition of “Viva Las
Vegas” with Dolly also singing, there was no
doubt that they would turn heads in both the
country and bluegrass communities. IBMA
awards for “Entertainer of the Year” in 2006
and 2007 Just prior to this release specifically
for sale at Cracker Barrel country store outlets,
The Grascals had a 2010 hit with their cover
of The Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville”
(on their Rounder Records release, “The
Famous Lefty Flynn’s”).
Many country classics adapt well to the
bluegrass genre, and these are all strong wellarranged selections that allow The Grascals’
instruments like the banjo, fiddle and mandolin to mix in nicely with those of the supporting country musicians – Steve Turner (drums),
Kent Wells (electric and acoustic guitars),
Hargus “Pig” Robbins (piano), Steve Hinson
(steel guitar), and Bessel Hundo (accordion).
For example, listen closely to Jeremy Abshire’s barn-burning fiddle break alongside the
electric guitars on “White Lightning.” Most of
the songs also feature guest vocalists. “Tiger
by the Tail” with Brad Paisley opens the CD,
and the song set of old favorites also showcase
Dolly Parton, Dierks Bentley, Joe Nichols,
Charlie Daniels, Tom T. Hall, Oak Ridge

Boys, Darryl Worley and others. At track four,
“I Am Strong” (co-penned by The Grascals’
Jamie Johnson) was inspired by his visit to
the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis,
Tn. The album’s closing reprisal of this song
features all of the guest vocalists, as well as
Terri Clark, Randy Owen, Steven Seagal, and
Ansley McLaurin too. Ms.
McLaurin is a young lady
from Hendersonville, Tn.
who is currently fighting cancer. Her voice is
one of courage, hope and
optimism.. If anyone wants
a lesson in rock and roll
mandolin, tune in Danny
Roberts’ break in “All My
Rowdy Friends Are Comin’
Over Tonight.” He and
Grascals bassist Terry Smith
penned the one instrumental
on the project, “Cracker
Barrel Swing,” obviously a
tribute to stores which are
donating a percentage of the
proceeds from this CD to
St. Jude Hospital. They and
the band are commended
for their efforts to this worthy cause.
When a band does covers of classics,
there’s always a tendency to compare them
with the original versions. Resist that urge,
and enjoy this album for what it is – an entertaining, likeable, commercial success. While
the arrangements aren’t particularly revelatory,
they are certainly very pleasing. Bluegrass instrumentation has been heard before in classic
country offerings, but The Grascals always do
an expert, masterful job with the fusion. That’s
their forte and their niche. I can’t say that they
have any new “hits” here, but they’ll garner
considerable airplay for our listening pleasure.
All the guests are a delightful complement
to the core band. “Country Classics with a
Bluegrass Spin” is a solid album with some
powerfully enduring songs.

Okay I have to admit I’ve been fairly
rough on Julia Roberts over the last few years.
It’s just that she’s spent a lot more time on
the public A list than I think she deserves
given her meager talents. It’s not that she’s
really horrible, but like that stupidly grating
pop song that gets played over and over and
over, she just annoys me. And over the years
I’ve given Ms. Roberts an extra helping of
derision.
Well let me be the first to say that LARRY
CROWNE stinks.
Furthermore it wouldn’t have been any better
had Meryl Streep played the female lead.
Now Tom Hanks is another of those actors
who seems to get more love than he deserves.
For instance Moe Howard’s Colonel Beauregard had a more authentic southern accent
than Hanks’ FORREST GUMP, but I digress.
He does seem to have a certain Jimmy Stewart
charisma and he does have a good eye for a
script.
But, LARRY CROWN still stinks.
So as I look to assign blame maybe I should
attack the director. Hmmm. Looks like Hanks.
Well who produced this mess? Uh huh. Hanks
again.
Gee whiz who was the hack screenwriter he
hired? You guessed it. Hanks.
This thing starts out on shaky ground if for
no other reason than its target audience which
appears to be fifty somethings.
Hanks is recently divorced Larry Crowne a
damn fine employee of a Wal Mart type of
store. The incredibly callous management
team bounces poor old Larry out of his job
and into the ranks of the near homeless.
Meanwhile Mercedes (Roberts) hates her
teaching job almost as much as she hates her A
hole of a husband.
Trying to bolster his academic credentials,
Crowne winds up in her insipid public speaking course and along the way and over under
and through a slew of completely ridiculous
situations the two, well you can guess.
Just one of those silly situations is that Larry
befriends a possibly Hispanic bike club who
all ride crappy little motor scooters similar to
his. Uh yeah I’ll buy that.
Not one of the characters; not Crowne,
Mercedes, her porn loving deadbeat hubby,
the cute little
leader of the
pack chick,
nor even the
neighbor with
the eternal
yard sale has
a speck of
believability.
That’s OK
because
neither do
any of
the jokes
or even
the mish
mash of a
plot itself.
So friends,
this bomb
lies at the
feet of the
usually
competent Tom
Hanks.
Possibly he
was in the
throes of a
Kevin Costner “I rule”
trance.
At least I can’t blame Julia Roberts.
Tracy and Hepburn couldn’t have saved this
one.
Horrible Bosses
Warner Brothers
Not yet rated as of deadline, I’m assuming R what with the plethora of F bombs
100 Min.
I hate this. Two stinky comedies in one issue.
Usually one might have surprised me. This
one did, but only because it was worse than I
expected.
See I figured it’d be a clever murder mystery
plot gone wrong with justice for all in the end.
Remember OFFICE SPACE? So why did I
expect good things from this one?
Well geez, look at the palette of stars here!
Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Donald
Sutherland, Colin Farrell, these are top shelf

actors
right?
So how do all these respected actors sign on to
such a turd? Beats me, maybe the rent’s due.
Actually the idea inst’ really a bad one but the
trip from opening to climax isn’t very exciting
or fumy. You need a little of both for a good
comedy thriller and you get, well neither.
As it happens in a lot of bad comedies someone has filled up the spaces that jokes should
inhabit with as many sex references and F
bombs as possible. Easier than writing actual
comedy I suppose.
Another gripe is that if you saw the trailer,
you’ve heard just about all of the jokes.
We all know that three guys have complete
jerks for bosses and plot to bump them off.
Right off the bat there’s a problem. While
Nick and Kurt’s bosses are truly evil scumbags
Dale’s boss is Jennifer Aniston whose sole
transgression has been trying to force him to
sleep with her. I guess most of us guys aren’t
seeing the downside of hitting the sack with
July 13 - 27, 2011
Jennifer Aniston.
Yes I know; oink oink.
Anyway with no real idea how to knock
someone off the three lads visit a seedy bar
to procure the services of a hired killer. They
settle on the consulting service of one Mother
Fu#### Jones (Jamie Fox) who helps them
with the plan. He should have stressed “don’t
try this at home” as the whole thing goes awry
and everyone winds up in not too funny peril.
Bedsides the shortage of real laughs Dale
(Charlie Day) spends nearly every minute of
his generous screen time screeching at everyone else. It gets annoying really quickly as
does most everything else in this flick.
Somebody has blown a shot at a really funny
movie but let the shortcuts sink the whole
thing.
I wonder if Tom Hanks helped under a pseudonym.

This issue’s internet pick is Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 war picture FULL METAL
JACKET.
Personally I think this one got overlooked
in the wake of films including APOCALYPSE NOW, and THE DEER HUNTER,
but for my money this one’s the best of the
genre.
Complete with Kubrick trademark camera
shots FMJ brilliantly bares the emotional
trauma of war as “Private Pyle” (Vincent
D’Onofrio) loses his sanity under the pressure of war and the military.
As moving as any war film ever made.

Moon Jokes
In commemoration of the first
Moon Walk (not dance) on
July 20th 1969, we thought
we would enlighten the lunarcy with some humor on Earth’s
favorite satellite...and please, no
“mooning” at these jokes.
Two blondes in California were sitting on a bench
talking ... and one blonde says to the other,
“Which do you think is farther away ... Florida or
the moon?”
The other blonde turns and says “Helloooooooooo, can you see Florida ...?”
---------------------------------------------------------Q. Did you hear about the great new restaurant
on the moon?
A. The food is excellent, but there’s no atmosphere.
-----------------------------------------------------------Q. What holds the moon up?
A. Moonbeams.
-------------------------------------------------------Q. How do you know when the moon is going
broke?
A. When it’s down to its last quarter.
-----------------------------------------------------------Did you hear NASA wanted to study the effects of
the moon on an aging individual, so they decided
to resend Armstrong. Unfortunately, they canceled
this because they were afraid the first words from

the moon in 30 years would be: “Houston? I have fallen, and I can’t get up.”
----------------------------------------------Q: How many aerospace
engineers does it take to change a
light bulb on the moon?
A: None. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist, you know.
-----------------------------------------------Q.
What do you call a clock on the moon?
A. A lunartick.
-----------------------------------------------------------A teacher asks their students “Which is more
useful, the Sun or the Moon?”
After a moment of silence a ten-year old student
puts his hand up and answers, “I think it’s the
Moon because the moon shines at night when you
want the light, whereas the Sun shines during the
day when you don’t need it.”
-----------------------------------------------------------Q. How does a man on a moon get his haircut?
A. Eclipse it.
Q. Did you hear about the bones they found on
the moon?
A. It seems like the cow did not make it. (hey
diddle diddle . . .)

inside and if you try to pluck it off, it WILL
stick to your finger as only snot can, and no
matter how hard you shake it, it will leave it’s
slimy residue behind and now it’s dirty too! I
speak from experience! At least I know what
to call it now.
De-Confuzzling oneself isn’t as easy as
it would seem. Even though some of you, my
lovely readers, would argue that I am always
in a state of Confuzzlement, I assure you that I
am not… going to argue with that!
There are many things in this world that
both confuse and puzzle me; it is true, so having a word to describe it now is kind of cool,
but this movie has left me Confuzzletaminated
resulting in my Confuzzability being greatly
amplified which means I will be able to confuse and puzzle you even more than before…
lucky you!
Confuzzled – means to be confused and
puzzled at the same time. This I learned from
a clay animation movie that I thought I’d
watch for a laugh called “Mary and Max”.
I found it in the NetFlix comedy section
so I figured what the heck I’ll watch it as I
needed something to cheer me up to get out of
the schlump I’ve been in. I mean clay animation movies are usually witty, funny and make
you laugh… right?
~ Rick Ray

Here’s some things that confuzzled me for
years;
Why... for god’s sake why is it called toe
‘jam’?
Why is bellybutton fuzz always blue?
What would happen if horses had thumbs?
… NOT NECESSARILY!
What disease did cured ham actually have?
This one wasn’t one of those… oh no I
picked probably the only clay animation movie
ever produced that was sad and full of misery,
gloom, death, and loneliness!
Now I’M confuzzled! Not at the story but
I’m confuzzled as to why I sat for an hour and
a half watching it! Now I’m stuck trying to
find a way to ‘De-Confuzzle’ myself so I can
get in the mood to write!
We all watch movies to leave our reality
behind by vicariously becoming part of the
story for the hour or so of the movie. Not to
experience REAL life! Sheesh!
Well at least it wasn’t a total waste of
time; I did learn another useful word, ‘SNIRT’!
SNIRT is when you sneeze and snot unnoticeably lands on the toe of your shoe and then
mixes with dirt as you walk around!
Why can’t you sneeze under water?
Don’t be fooled by the surface of SNIRT
though, just because it looks like a solid clump
of mud it really is still all gooey and slimy

What’s the speed of dark?
Is it still called a hearing when a deaf person
goes to court?
Why do psychics have to ask you for your
name?
Why doesn’t ground coffee taste like mud?
If a woman walks into a bar does her dyslexic
husband walk into a bra?
I think this movie has left some SNIRT on my
brain! No really!
