At this time, the Chapel was almost torn down;
however, strong community support led to its move
in 1967 to the current location in Minoru Park
where it was restored, painted and re-consecrated
so members of all different faiths could use this
beautiful historic building.

PUCCINI!
Vancouver Opera
A Night at the Opera
Celebrate Verdi’s 200th birthday with us (a week
early) with his most popular opera, La Traviata, a
moving adaptation of the Dame aux Camelias story
by Alexandre Dumas.
He wrote some of the most beautiful melodies we
know. He told some of the most compelling stories
of love and danger, passion and intrigue that have
ever been heard. And in the world of great music,
Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) achieved immortality.
Enjoy a magical performance of highlights from
VO’s current season along with opera classics both
familiar and rare, as well as some special holidaythemed surprises. All ages are welcome—no prior
opera experience necessary.
Please join us for an all-Puccini concert. Learn who
he was and how he achieved his miracles. Above
all, hear the best of his music: from La Bohème
to Tosca, Gianni Schicchi to Fanciulla, Madama
Butterfly to Turandot, and from American mining
towns to Roman castles.
This captivating performance will feature artists
from VO’s Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program,
including rising young artists Kristin Hoff (mezzosoprano) and Rocco Rupolo (tenor), as well as
soprano Sheila Christie, recently featured in the
Georgia Straight, and baritone Aaron Durand, who
charmed audiences in VO’s swashbuckling 2012
production of The Pirates of Penzance. The young
and vibrant cast will be joined by pianist KimberleyAnn Bartczak and will perform under the direction
of Fanny Gilbert-Collet.
Violetta, a young courtesan, encounters Alfredo at
a party. He attempts to charm her, but she laughs,
telling him that he can visit her when the flower
of his love dies. Left alone, she simply can’t forget
him and begins to wonder if a girl like herself can
have a serious love. The pair retires to the country,
where she regains her health, only to be visited by
Alfredo’s father, who demands that she leave his
son. Tearfully and regretfully, she does. Months
pass, and Violetta returns to her former life in
the city. There, her illness returns and she finds
herself alone and abandoned. Her only consolation
is a letter from Georgio Germont, saying he has
reconsidered and told Alfredo the truth. Alone she
waits. In her final hours, the pair arrive only to say
a final goodbye. Performers include Elizabeth Lewis
Celeste (Violetta/soprano), Matt Chittick (Alfredo/
tenor), Andrew Greenwood (Germont/baritone),
and Dr. Nikolai Maloff, piano.
