That’s a lot of sales, and rightly so. Great car. I well remember the launch, back in 2005. The man I shared a car with could barely drive and I was convinced my new career as a motoring journalist was about to be abruptly ended by a stranger. I survived. The new Swift looked good 11 years ago and it’s hardly aged, wouldn’t you agree? That’s surely the measure of a good original design. I said it then and I’ll say it again now – I still think it’d be a cracking car with a 1,300cc Hyabusa engine in it. Please make it happen, Suzuki. You have plenty of both – just join them together. Things always seem to get spread out and a bit processional there. But that wasn’t the case at Silverstone with the British Superbikes. Every race was a cliff-hanger. While other riders grabbed the glory, one rider really stood out for me. That was Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne. He bagged an impressive double podium but I’m pretty sure no other rider on the planet could have achieved the same result. Byrne was diplomatic when interviewed on camera ■ but whatever he said, with a chirpy grin, his Ducati Panigale, stripped of its sophisticated rider aid packages, appeared horrible to ride. It looked stiff as a board, unforgiving and knife-edgy. He was within a gnat’s nudger of crashing on the last corner of the last lap of the last race. The moment the PBM team make sense of that complicated wiring loom and new computer, Byrne will be a force to be reckoned with. In its raw state, what he achieved on it at Silverstone was nothing short of a miracle in my book. ■ BMW M2 Big-engined baby Beemer is a howling success From £44,070 2,979cc, straight-six, turbo 370hp 465Nm 155mph 4.3 secs (auto) 35.8mpg combined (auto) 185g/km (auto) Beautiful soundtrack Max Power Magazine looks Already a sell-out success Car Insurance ® Lines open 9am - 8pm, 7 days a week IJZ 468 JAB 567S JA59 CKY JAC 27N JAG 354V C143 JAK W600 JAK JAM 350N JAM 984P B617 JAN A432 JAN W29 JAN JAP 41N JAP 44N JAS 359X W38 JAW A706 JAC P28 JAY E23 JAY E885 JAY A104 JAY JAV 666D JAZ 1305 434 JBP W31 JCB E156 JEF S44 JEF B33 JEM JEM 726P J32 RYS JES 516X B26 JES Y33 JES N666 JES JEZ 8595 JEZ 1502 JHZ 483 JIG 64 JIG 9795 JIL 373 JIL 2077 JIW 1516 JOD 511K JOE 226W Y600 JOE 553 JON JON 251E JON 8J JL04 JON J41 HNS JOY 88N JOY 934V E996 JOY M13 JPC V111 JSB JSK 994 JUD 111S JUE 426V T600 JUE B660 JUE JUL 158P S800 JUL JU57 ENS K1 JWL KAJ 41S KAR 138S M900 KAR KAS 15Y KAT 359S E18 KAT M FOR MIGHTY HAPPY five ■ millionth birthday, Suzuki Swift. We’re in Spain, near Malaga and the Spanish police have just expressed their admiration for the car’s velocity by administering a meaty speeding fine. Seemed very reasonable value to me though, especially as I wasn’t driving at the time and my co-driver copped for it. I was much luckier. My route avoided the radar trap cash generator on the autoroute and involved some pretty dramatic roads in the mountains outside Malaga. The soaking wet, patchy damp, or alternatively bone-dry switchbacks allowed me to come to terms with this new BMW without the hindrance of other traffic or bung-hungry bobbies. The M2 is an admirable concept. Tiny car, compact dimensions, big engine, big power, rear-wheel drive. It’s like an M3 or M4, just smaller, more manoeuvrable and even feistier. Even with all the traction aids fully- engaged, on a wet and unfamiliar road it always feels alive. Ever driven a kart? It’s the same. The M2 is snappy, agile and quick to react under provocation. Like a kart, it responds well to rapid, delicate inputs. There’s an awful lot of grip and an awful lot of power so the limits are high. Even on a wet, twisty road. Under the bonnet is a straight-six, threelitre lump with a single, variable-geometry turbocharger. You’d never know they had cut costs (and weight) by missing out the extra blower you find in the M3 and M4. Torque is easily obtainable from just above tickover all the way to the red line. And whatever the revs, whatever the gear, the booming, howling forward shove is pretty relentless. I’ve been driving the seven-speed, twinclutch auto version because a slender man in mustard corduroys and a sensible sweater stole the last manual before we could get hold of it. The auto box, a £2,600 optional extra, offers better fuel consumption and CO2 figures, faster acceleration times and smooth up and down shifts. But, call me a Luddite, in a car like this – which is all about the drive – it doesn’t matter how polished its performance, for me it somehow removes an element of driving enjoyment and engagement. Hopefully, corduroy man will have relinquished the keys for the manual version tomorrow. I hear only good things about it. The gearbox, that is, not trouser man. At the fat end of fifty grand (loaded with a few extras like a nice stereo, heated seats and decent headlights that allow you to see where you’re going at night) this new M2 is punching in a very strong pool of talent. Base price is £44,000. Ish. Rivals? Forget the Audi RS3 – that’s just a posh Golf R – effectively a hot hatch. In fifty grand M2-land you’re looking at my favourite rear wheel drive car of all time, the Porsche Cayman (admittedly in fourcylinder form). However, the BMW M2 beats the Cayman hands down on rear seat space. That point cannot be argued. GOT A COMMENT ON NO LIMITS? EMAIL ME AT [email protected]
