6 – 13 Abril 2014
B
rahmans were imported to South Africa in 1954
by visionaries in the Brahman family of that era.
In the 60 years that followed, the breed totally
transformed the beef industry in Southern
Africa. Today one cannot drive around in
Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South
Africa without seeing Brahman crosses at least 10 km along
the road.
B
geteel. Brahmane as sulks het egter ‘n besonderse aandeel
Apart from Brahmans, of the best beef breeds are bred in
Africa. Brahmans had a distinctive influence in the origin of
composite breeds, such as the beautiful Simbras, Brafords,
Branguses, Santa Getrudeses and Beefmasters, that are to
be seen everywhere. The Brahman highlighted and satisfied
the unbelievable need for Zebu genes in Africa.
Brafords, Branguses, Santa Getrudeses y Beefmasters,
Therefore I like to say and write that Brahmans do not
compete with other breeds, but they complement all breeds.
South Africa has had the privilege to host two World
Congresses in 1986 and 2000 and now again in 2014 in
Parys (Free State). We have the opportunity of a lifetime to
show the world what we have achieved with genetics and
that we have helped shape a breed that we can be proud of.
As South Africans we are proud that the world have come
to look at our cattle. The main objective of the congress is
surely to celebrate the perfection of our very special breed.
We are proud that we are the world leaders with Breedplan.
We are also proud that we breed Brahmans that adapt and
perform brilliantly in Africa.
At the same time we are also thankful that America has
been, and still is, providing us with genetics to develop our
wonderful breed and by so doing enabled us to achieve our
goals. Thank you also to our visitors who have come to
enjoy genuine South African hospitality with us.
Council and the organizing committee have decided to host
the World Congress in the small town of Parys, in the Free
State. Apart from the fact that this breathtaking village
offers a host of activities to our guests, it also features the
Dome, where we can not only house and show a thousand
cattle, but also offer our sponsors, exhibitors and visitors its
excellent facilities. Here we are all going to socialize and
chat for an entire week and share our love for our beloved
Brahman breed.
rahmane is gedurende 1954 na Suid-Afrika
deur ons pioniers (visionaries) ingevoer. In die
daaropvolgende 60 jaar het die Ras die hele
vleisbedryf in Suid-Afrika verander. U kan
rondry in Botswana, Namibië, Mosambiek,
nuevo en Parys (Free State).
haya venido a contemplar nuestro ganado. Nuestro principal
el Free State.

waarvoor ons almal so lief is.
nie-haltermak is alreeds ingeskryf.
Suid-Afrikaners is.
Soos u weet maak ek graag die stelling “wys my U
belangstelling deur U teenwoordigheid”
10
The Dome is also of particular historical interest, since it
dates back 2023 million years ago when a meteorite struck
the earth in this area. Over many decades geologists in
South Africa and also other parts of the world have studied
this broken and molten stone, as well as the rock formation
around Parys and Vredefort to unravel the impact of the
meteorite.
We cannot but symbolize this historic event as part of the
world heritage which is as special as the impact of the
Brahman breed and its development in Africa.
23 Member countries are at present members of the World
Brahman Federation, of which South Africa is one. For the
first time in 60 years the World Brahman Federation meeting
is held in South Africa concurrently with our congress. This
also offers the additional opportunity for the delegates of the
member countries to attend our congress, view our beautiful
cattle and also to enjoy and get to know our country better.
The possibility of us again hosting the congress within the
next 30 years is very slim, but it will indeed be a privilege.
We are excited about the unbelievable interest in our
congress. About eight hundred and fifty cattle, of which some
are halter trained and others not, have already been entered.
We expect roughly 350 South Africans, 30 Namibians, 30
Australians, 30 Americans and 50 South Americans (Latin
America) to attend our congress.
The cattle to be exhibited are of world class. Eight pre and
post congress tours are also presented. Our South African
breeders are excited. We are going to build friendships and
show people around the world how hospitable we South
Africans are. We wish to invite every breeder who will attend
the congress also to join in the festivity – even if you won’t
be showing – come as spectator to support your fellow
breeders who are showing their animals.
As you know I often reiterate: “Show me your interest by
your presence.”
To all our cattle exhibitors: Thank you very much for your
support. You will most certainly receive the necessary
promotion for your stud. Thank you very much for your
contribution towards making this congress a huge success.
sus excelentes instalaciones a nuestros patrocinadores,
expositores y visitantes.
30 australianas, 30 americanas y 50 sudamericanas (Latino
América) asistan a nuestro congreso.
congreso. Los ganaderos y criadores sudafricanos estamos
ilusionados.

belangstel in ons spesiale ras as net ons telers. ‘n
van iets so spesiaal.
Dit is vir my
ongelooflike werk gedoen. Aan Willem Barnand, Bill van

To all our sponsors: Thank you very much for your exceptional
support to make this event possible. The congress has
once again proved that more people are interested in our
breed than only our breeders. Unbelievable interest was
shown by our sponsors who made their contributions to
stage a world class event. Thanks to all: our Government,
Banks, Businesses, Farmers and Friends. You have built
associations across borders. This event will show what can
be achieved when people stand together, take hands and
make a success of something so special.
Furthermore I wish to thank our Council that they accepted
the challenge to undertake, support and successfully
complete this special assignment. I was heartened by
experiencing your enthusiasm and comradeship and your
determination to make a success of this event.
Our organizing committee: Wessel Hattingh as Chairman,
Riaan Theron, Andries Marx and Rohan Beukes – You
produced sterling stuff. To Willem Barnand, Bill van
Lelyveld, Karin in the Office, Charmainé and Caria and the
entire promotion committee: Thank you very much for the
special Journal you have compiled for the congress.
Enjoy reading the Congress Journal and all the activities that
lie ahead. An opportunity like this won’t present itself soon
again.
Presidente, Riaan Theron, Andries Marx y Rohan Beukes –
han realizado un trabajo brillante. A Willem Barnand, Bill van

South African hospitality during the Congress.
W
- Everyone who contributed and submitted articles to the
Special Congress Edition of the Brahman Journal which
reflects the origin, history and present scenario of the
Brahman industry;
The objective of the Congress is to strengthen associations
between Brahman breeders, our partners in business and
scientists in the industry who encourage the implementation
of modern science techniques to promote Brahmans as a
dominant breed in the global arena. This prestigious event
will also celebrate 60 years of Brahmans on the Southern
African continent.
From here we move to the next World Brahman Congress
in 2016 that will take place in Australia. On behalf of the
2014 Congress Committee I wish you well – may all your
endeavours be successful.
ithout any doubt, the World Brahman
Congress is the most important event
on the International Brahman Calendar.
This Congress is hosted bi-annually by a
member country of the Brahman World
Federation, consisting of 23 Member Countries. It is the third
time that South Africa hosts this Congress and it is certainly
an immense privilege to be the host of this important event
in 2014!
To the following people I would like to extend a sincere
and special word of thanks:
- Local and international speakers who enlightened the
industry with their academic and practical knowledge.
Your valuable contribution has given the International
Brahman fraternity and our fellow breeders new
opportunities and expertise to ensure sustained growth
for future generations;

- The Brahman Team – every person who supported us
with enthusiasm in this memorable occasion. Thank you
for your unconditional loyalty;
- A special word of thanks to our Sponsors who
generously supported Brahman Southern Africa and
made this important event possible. Without your
financial assistance a congress of this magnitude would
not have been possible. We salute you for your positive
involvement in the Brahman industry.
I am sure this congress will reconfirm associations between
Brahman breeders worldwide and will also be a great
opportunity for commercial enterprises that will benefit the
entire Beef and related industries. It will also allow Southern
Africa farmers to share their systems of production, cattle
management and the value of genetic improvement to
further grow the Brahman breed.
I greet all Journal readers with gratitude and acknowledgement of each individual’s contribution to the industry.
May the Brahman breed continue to grow and expand!

S
in ninguna duda, el Congreso Mundial Brahmán
el crecimiento sostenible de las futuras generaciones;
Gracias
por su incondicional lealtad;
de la industria Brahmán;

BRAHMAN
Congress Journal 2014
The Girl
with the
It was particularly her dark brown eyes that rendered a
certain kind of mystery to her. The girl who sat opposite me
in the study was different from the average teenager – she
was weird. Not because of the black clothes and black nail
polish. I am mad about wearing black myself – it makes
me look slimmer! It was the thick chain with a large lock
round her neck (not your delicate pendant type chain!),
that fascinated me. Further enquiry elicited the following
explanation: She is a Satanist, and that is her way of
professing that she is a slave to the Prince of Darkness. Or
rather, thàt is what her parents think and thàt is what she
wishes to be known as. Ultimately, however, it turned out
that she had not really been involved in satanic activities.
She was more of a dabbler – somebody who does thorough
research on Satanism, and wants other people to think that
she is fully involved in satanic rituals.
This girl in my study was in search – of herself, who she really
was and wished to be, what her mission in life was. She
wanted to know where she would find true happiness. With
her it was a case of negative identity. Knowing your true
identity means that you know yourself and realize that you
are a unique being with unique talents and characteristics.
Unfortunately so many people seek their identity and feeling
of self-esteem in the wrong place, or in things that do not
really satisfy. Like the young lady there in my study. Her
negative lifestyle had to give her that feeling of security and
uniqueness. She so badly wanted to feel accepted, but her
choice of finding a means to realize that, only alienated her
more from others.
So many people are involved in matters that ultimately
leave them with a negative identity, low self-image and a

HER NECK
feeling of senselessness. So many people seek self-esteem
and uniqueness in anti-social activities. It can be criminal
behaviour or merely manifest in being ‘difficult’ and always
trying to shock and hurt others. Others, again, build their
self-image on material matters: Status and money and
house and stud are depended on for happiness. In modern
times technology regarding motor cars, computers and
cell phones plays a significant role — especially with our
children. Everything is, however, not bad and negative.
The problem lies with the exaggerated emphasis that is
sometimes placed on external material factors to build our
self-esteem and self-image.
When Jesus was on earth, the majority of the nation hoped
that He was a political Messiah that would liberate them from
the Roman Authority of that time. It therefore comes as no
surprise that his own people rejected Him, because He had
not tied in with their expectations and notion of value and
identity. Jesus focuses on his calling and obedience to God
his Father: To come and die on the cross for people’s sins
and rise from the dead. The triumph over sin, hell, problems
and everything which is false and induces a negative selfimage and identity is the substance in his life. It’s the
loosening of the chain round the soul, the release of the girl
with the chain round the neck in my study.
Each of us wants to feel special. As so strikingly portrayed
decades ago on the stage by Trudie Taljaard in Jeanne
Goosen’s ‘Kombuis-Blues’: “As ek maar net ‘n onsterflike
reël kon skryf …“ (If only I could write an immortal line).
In whichever way we build our feeling of self-esteem and
security, let us ask ourselves if it leads to true insight into
ourselves, and to the spiritual well-being of ourselves and
others. What is the foundation of our identity feeling and
self-image: Is it like the wise man that built his house on the
rock, or the foolish man that built his house on the sand?
Wollie Grobler
(Matthew 7:24 and 26). The foundation of a feeling of value
is laid there where God called you personally and changed
your life: ‘But now thus sayeth the Lord that created thee,
O Jacob, and He that formed thee, O Israel. Fear not: for I
have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art
mine... Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been
honourable and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men
for thee and people for thy life… (Isaiah 43:1 and 4). You
have immense value, because the Almighty God says so!
Then you can start regarding others in your house and in
society highly as unique beings and love them. Then you
know that you are a pardoned sinner that received special
talents from God with which to serve Him. And to edify
others in your house, church, work environment — wherever
— with the talents you have. Because in this way you write
your immortal line on the pages of God’s Book of Life here
on earth – every day. And in this way you help others to find
their true identity so as to bring their own life story in line with
God’s big story. Those who have not yet found real identity
in this are still caught up and locked into a futile search.
Like the girl with the brown eyes and chain-and-lock round
the neck. Her mother and I bore patiently with her and
walked a tough road with her — because she ultimately
joined a satanic coven. There she was a sex slave and drug
addict. When, after long months she tried to commit suicide
and had reached rock bottom, we were there for her. We
never ceased praying for her, waiting for her. The girl with the
chain-and-lock round the neck had finally broken free and
found true happiness.
I often touch my own neck … Just to remind myself: Am
I not sometimes perhaps busy locking in – link by link – a
chain of false securities ?
