Editor’s Note
Hi,
Well, as you can see, it’s been another
action-packed year at TEMS, ranging from
fantastic sports and theatrical triumphs, to
the
talent
show
and
other
fund-raiser
projects, as well as lots of exciting school
trips.
Even
so,
the
Magazine
can
only
provide a selection of all the events that
happen around the school, but I hope this
year’s edition celebrates the achievements of
all our talented pupils and lends insight
into the variety of activities carried out!
We’ve all worked really hard and I would
like to thank all of the pupils, teachers and
members
of
staff
for
promoting
these
activities and making it all happen. Thank
you so much for all your hand work. We all
deserve a well-earned rest.
Enjoy,

was so much
fun!!!!!
This year we have been
experimenting with lots of
different materials such as
finger-paints, plasticine,
and chalk. We also learnt
how to cut with scissors and
worked on many pencil
control activities. We even
grew sunflowers…
We celebrated our
local festival San
Isidro, dressing up as
“chulapas” and
“chulapos”. We also
enjoyed chocolate and
churros and danced to
the „chotis‟ for our
mummies and daddies.
In May, we enjoyed
book day. The book
we focused on was
“The Very Hungry
Caterpillar” and he
took us on a journey
eating his way through
many children‟s story
books. We also had
shared reading with
Year 1, it was fun
reading with older
children.
We‟ve been learning so many
new things like how to count in
English, fasten our buttons, and
build towers…
Look at all the things we
can do the Montessori
way…
Reception
Learning about
our world.
As part of topic work
we go on excursions.
They help us to learn
about our world. This
year we went for a walk
around our area for the
Houses and Homes
topic.
Learning to write.
In Reception children
develop their hands for
writing and work
towards forming letters
and numbers correctly.
To help develop and
gain confidence with
English, children take
part in a weekly news
program.
During the
same topic
we also made
and sent
Christmas
cards home
to our
families. We
learnt about
addresses
and house
numbers.
When we
went to the
post box to
mail our
cards
Monica‟s
class met the
postman!
Learning
about culture.
Throughout the
year the
children
celebrate
various local
festivals such as
Carnival, Easter
and San Isidro
to learn about
their own
culture.
In Reception children also learn
about celebrations in other cultures.
This year we looked at Diwali and
Chinese New Year.
Learning about art.
The children have been busy
developing different art
techniques and skills, which allow
them to express themselves
creatively.

Book Week in Reception!
In Reception we explored „The Very
Hungry Caterpillar‟ and the other
stories that the caterpillar ate his way
through.
We created a big hungry caterpillar
for our display, we all made it together
as a team and the nursery children
helped us too!
To end our book week we got together
with the whole of infants and had our
snack in the garden! It was a super day!
We are learning all about mini beasts,
what they eat, life cycles, body parts
and some great songs that you can
hear us sing to you at home if you ask
us!
We made some fuzzy bees in
reception Richard and Hannah.
For Peace Day we made this
beautiful dove. Every Pchild in

Year 1
Book Week
This year we had
lots of fun
celebrating book
week with all the
different
activities we did!
In Year 1 Danni we
explored the story
of Alice in
wonderland and
had a tea party in
the classroom
where even the
rabbit showed up!
In Year 1 Clare we
explored the story
of Cinderella and
had a classroom
ball were all the
children dressed
up as princes and
princesses!
The children in
Year 1 visited
nursery and read
to them. They
enjoyed reading
their favourite
book from the
classroom to a
child in nursery
and spoke about
the books in
English.
Year 1 on
their trip to
the fire
station.
The children
loved going
to the fire
station and
trying on the
special outfits!
Pepe and Liam from Y1A
We have been learning about
fantasy stories. The children
have made up their own
stories using their imagination
and have even acted them out
for some of their classmates!
We had lots of monsters and
aliens and animals that could
talk! The children put their
creative ideas into some great
pieces of work.

Sunflowers in Year1!
In Year 1 we have been exploring the
world of plants. We‟ve been looking at
how they grow, what they need to grow
and how to look after plants ourselves!
We each planted sunflower seeds and
watered them. It has been fun watching
them grow!
Year 1‟s
Sunflowers!
We have been looking at plants you can
eat. Our tasting day was lots of fun!
Learning is still very hands-on in Year 1.
Children learnt about winter animals and
how they survive the cold. We had
our own hibernation day where we
ate our snacks and settled down
for a story and a nap!
We learnt all about the history of
pirates, making timelines and
finding treasures on a map! We all
dressed up as pirates and had a
year 1 pirate day full of activities

Year Two Caroline
Sofia and Rodrigo
We enjoyed reading the Biff and Chip adventures so much that we
decided to write our own adventure stories!
First we thought about a setting for our fantasy story.
Isi’s Rockpool
Rodrigo’s Pirate Ship
Julieta’s Egyptian
Pyramid
Then we described a real-life character, a fantasy character and a magical object to
take us from one world to the next.
We shared our ideas with our talking partners.
Alex and Francesca
Jimena and Joaquín
Next we wrote a plan for the story. We thought about where the story began, how the
characters travelled into the fantasy world and the problems that they would meet.
Samuel
Claudia
Alejandra
Finally we wrote our stories into books to share with our friends.
In our year two science topic we learnt about animal groups. We
studied the different characteristics of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish,
amphibians, insects and spiders.
Ana Aceres
Claudia Martinez
Alonso Martinez
We got the chance to see
some of the animals we
talked about in our
lessons, on our trip to the
zoo. They looked even
better in real life!

Story circles enable children to retell a story in their own words and
are an important part of the prewriting process prior to writing
their own stories.

In Year 2 we have learnt how the style and
format of writing changes depending on its
purpose. This year we have written letters,
post cards, recipes, stories, poems,
information and instructional texts.

Moving to Year 3 was an exciting yet scary change for
most of us. In SEAL and through collaborative learning
we have overcome this and have learnt to work really
well together with our new classmates.
In Term 1 we enjoyed experimenting on eggs
to find out the effects of Coca Cola on our
teeth. Can you guess what happened to the
eggs in Coca Cola?
Paula and Pablo V
Alda
In Term 2 we wrote interesting short
stories using lots of lovely adjectives
and made treasure chests and crabs
for the stories too.
Alejandra and Carlos S
To celebrate Pancake Day we
cooked pancakes in class and
had races in the garden!
Weaving placemats
In Term 3 we have been learning about
The Romans. So far we have made Roman
shields and are looking forward to
making wax tablets to do our Math’s
work on!

really turn into a prince.
This year while
learning about our
world and where the
continents are, we
enjoyed reading stories
from around the world.
The Dreamtime myth
from Australia about
the water-holding
toads and the rainbow
serpent was one of
those stories. We did
some aboriginal dot
paintings as well.
We read a fable from
the country of
Vietnam called The
Star Fruit Tree. Here
to the left you can see
the fruit. We tried it in
class. It was delicious!
At the same time,
while studying
Geography, we looked
at many world
monuments, including
Saint Basil’s Cathedral
in Russia. Here to the
right, you can see our
own versions that we
put together ourselves.
We practised our
writing skills a lot this
year. We wrote a fairy
tale about a merman
and a princess. This
one here on the left
was written by
Victoria Sánchez. And
on the right, you can
see our fable books we
wrote. We had fun
reading all of them
during silent reading.

This year we have been working on being more responsible for our own learning. We have
worked with our teacher regarding what we want to learn and how we want to learn. We
have even worked at how to assess each other’s learning through peer assessment. Take a
look at some of us assessing our friend’s work.
Every week we
complete a book
report and normally
we assess each
other’s to check that
we have provided a
good report. We
really enjoy doing
this and we think it
makes us want to do
better each week.
Here are Carlota, Bosco, Iván and Laura checking some reports.
Probably our biggest success this year was our
assembly. Annelouise gave us the idea but we were
the ones who made it interesting and lots of fun.
We decided exactly what we wanted to show our
parents and we even made the PowerPoint. Everyone
loved it…especially Annelouise, when Scotland won at
the parent’s assembly (we think it was a fix!)
Our star musician!
We were all fandabydosie!

One of the things we most
enjoyed was our assembly:
‘Theseus and the Minotaur’.
We all worked really hard and
the show was a great success!
English: We wrote poems
using comparative and
superlative structures and
loads of imagination!
Artwork: creating geometric
designs by reflecting and
translating shapes. Just one of
the many cool pieces of art we
did this year!
This has been such a fantastic and exciting year! We have learned and experienced so
much together. We have worked extremely hard
and are now ready for a well deserved summer
holiday. These are just a few of the activities we
did in Year 4.
ART and TOPIC:
One of our topics this year was Materials and their Properties. As an art project, we made paper,
plastic, metal and wood collages.
Maths: Reflective Symmetry
We used our names to create insects! Can you tell who we are?
Language: Cross Word Puzzle
For Book Day ,we read “Fish is
Fish” by Leo Lionni and then
worked in small groups to create
an enormous crossword puzzle!
We used key words from the story.
Year 4 Laura
I am very proud of the progress that this class has made since the
beginning of the year. Here is a small sample of the many things they
have accomplished with enthusiasm and style!

la cooperación y
colaboración
entre
compañeros.
This year we read lots of interesting
novels in class, but our particular
favourites were the creepy,
supernatural ones. We decided to
write our own playscript for our
assembly based on a select few:
L-R: Sergio Tejedo, Mateo Poyatos, Iván Fernández
Three boys from our class making a television
set from cardboard.
What made our assembly very
special was the fact that we did
EVERYTHING ourselves!
 THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL
AND MR HYDE, by Robert Louis
Stevenson
 GEORGE’S MARVELLOUS MEDICINE,
by Roald Dahl
 DRACULA, by Bram Stoker
 GOBBOLINO THE WITCH’S CAT, by
Ursula Moray Williams
We began by brainstorming ideas for
the plot, which our teacher then
typed into a playscript. After this, we
were each assigned two roles, one as
an actor in the CAST, and another as
part of the PRODUCTION CREW.
Our crew jobs ranged from director
to propmaster to key grip and gaffer
with everything in between. We
gave one another advice on how to
say our lines and move around the
stage, taught one another to sing
and dance and practiced in garden
time for months, and on the big
night we were even responsible for
styling each other’s hair and painting
each other’s faces.
Beatriz Steensma
When the big day arrived, everything
went exactly to plan and we are very
proud of ourselves indeed!

characters!

SABIDURÍA
Cuando te escuchaba hablar,
tus blancos dientes brillaban,
tu sabiduría hizo fortalecer mi tronco,
tu amor me hizo sentirme segura.

INVIERNO
Yo vi una vez,
un niño frío y dulce,
su chaqueta de lana
muy bien tejida
y sus botas de agua
perfectamente pulidas.
Yo vi una vez,
un niño frío y dulce,
que extendía su manta
blanca,
las flores se encogían,
los niños sonreían
y yo contenta bailaba.

The Holiday of Your Dreams!
For our parent assembly we
performed a play about selling
a perfect holiday. The idea for
this came from the „persuasion‟
theme we studied in Literacy,
and used typical sales
techniques such as: identifying
the customer‟s need, using
slogans and impressive
vocabulary, and making
personalised offers. We also
sang two catchy songs!
Writing Adventure Stories: Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Also in Literacy we wrote extracts of an adventure story based on photos
from an adventure film, using suspense, characterisation through dialogue,
and other elements of story-writing. Here are some examples:
They came to a lake…
“Come on,” shouted Tom, “it‟s only water. Let‟s cross
it.”
“No, it could be acid,” replied Sarah. “I‟ll test it”.
She put her bottle in the lake. Nothing happened.
“It isn‟t acid!” Sarah told Tom in a relieved voice. “Let‟s
swim.”
They prepared to dive, but suddenly they saw the

Sarah was the first to notice them.

Literacy
In Year 6 Cy, we have worked hard on our writing all year long. Above is one of our animal poems, and below are
some of the adventure stories we wrote. We tried to use strong action verbs and descriptive adjectives to make our
writing more interesting, and we tried to grab the reader’s attention right from the start.
The Time Rescue by Paula Vega
I was afraid.
The darkness of the cave terrorized me. I tried to
turn on my torch but nothing happened, because it
didn’t work. I tried to take some steps forward but I
was paralyzed. I couldn’t move.
Our Parent Assembly in February
was The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss
Suddenly I heard a mysterious voice that said,
“Don’t try to do anything. You’re under a spell now.
Go away!”
Some seconds later, a hole opened in the ceiling
and the moonlight shone on my face. I stared at the
gorgeous moon, but I remembered the words: “Now go
away!”
Then everything went dark again. . . .

Prado de amapolas (durante la guerra)
Un lago verde en medio
de un mundo negro.
Salpicado por trinos de abril.
Un viento suave mece el rastro rojo
de amapolas marchitas.
Cuna de estrellas de color.
Por la guerra amenazadas
cobijándose entre las hierbas.
El agua las falta
y el sol no las llega.
Las rosas crecen espinas
como arma de muerte.
Las amapolas marchitas
mecidas por un viento leve.
El prado debilitado
deja a la guerra avanzar.
Con una aguja clavada en el pecho
destinado a continuar.

LAS CUATRO ESTACIONES:
ME SIENTO MAL
Me siento mal
Por todas las personas pobres
que no tienen comida ni casa.
Me siento mal.
Me siento mal,
por las personas discapacitadas
que no pueden hacer
lo que nosotros podemos hacer.
Me siento mal.
Me siento mal,
por los niños,
que no tiene la educación necesaria,
y que piden tenerla.
Me siento mal.
Me siento mal
por los adultos,
que tienen preocupación por la crisis,
y que sufren desahucios,
Me siento mal,
me siento mal.

La primera estación
más fría que el hielo.
Sacas la mano
y te cae un trueno.
Cuando se acaba el invierno,
el año se hace tierno.
EL HADA DE VENECIA
Venecia amanece fría y musical
con una niebla fantasmal.
Neve es el espectro del castillo.
Bella y deslumbrante
escucha un grillo.
“Qué triste es mi paraíso”
pensaba Neve mientras
observaba
la ciudad fría de Venecia,
con mirada de inteligencia,
en la música de los violines
permanecerá grabada su sonrisa.
Su imagen brilla entre la niebla
y la brisa. Neve desprecia
cómo se hunde Venecia,
bajo las lágrimas de las nubes.

Oh, primavera, ¡qué linda ya llega!
Los alegres ruiseñores cantan como
señores.
Las flores brotan sin parar,
como estrellas en la mar.
Y al terminar, todo el mundo a
llorar.
El verano es un chapuzón de
alegría,
crema de sol, bañador y agua.
Pero qué calor, por favor,
el agua se convierte en vapor.
Todo el mundo lleno de júbilo y
amor.
Ya llega el otoño, adiós al verano,
vuelta al cole con tus amigos.
¡Hala! Fuera los vagos y dentro los
listos,
dentro los deberes
y fuera tus juguetes preferidos.

Year 7 at the castle of Manzanares El Real
Year 9 have had a turbulent
year! From slavery to the
war to the holocaust!
Plantations have been
researched, slavery
speeches have been made,
trench diaries have been
written, war recruitment
posters designed and the
Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
has been critically reviewed.
Year 10 have worked to
become excellent historians!
They have been evaluating,
interpreting, discussing,
analysing and debating at
every given opportunity. Oh,
and in true historical fashion,
discussing the importance of
certain individuals
moustaches.
This year in History there has been
castle building, drama, executions,
stupid deaths and so much more!!!
Year 7 visited the castle at
Manzanares El Real, caught the Black
Death, discovered the remains of a
2000 year old man and re-enacted
the death of Thomas Becket.
Year 8 created a drama about the life
and times of Henry VIII, made a Tudor
TV show, researched about Imperial
China, took part in an Ancient
Chinese kite flying competition and
talked a lot about witches.
8S and 8T performing
their Henry VIII
drama.

For one hour on the 25th April 2013 ten students taken from years 7 and 8 sat the
UK Junior Mathematics Challenge, pitting their wits against the elite of England,
Europe and the rest of the world. Overall 1 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze Awards
achieved. Congratulations to all the participants, with special mention to Ernesto,
year 7, topping the scoreboard within the school and gaining the Gold award.
Example Questions from
2013 JMC
The year 9s have worked well this year, gaining a taste of what´s to come in the
IGCSE course. They have investigated various techniques and are developing their
analytical skills to chose for themselves the most efficient method to solve problems.
The year 10s have started their IGCSE course; a number of students have opted to
extend their studies to tackle Additional Mathematics problems as well as the
regular Extended Tier.
Example of Additional Mathematics
Year 11 have come to the end of their English curriculum Mathematics. After all their
hard work, we wish them the best of luck as they await their results in August.
Special mention goes out to Edu; after his outstanding A* in the IGCSE taken a year
early, he has now completed the AS in Pure Mathematics solving problems involving
Calculus.

GEOGRAPHY
In Human Geographical terms, across the World in a number of countries, the last few years have been
marked by ´manifestations´ (demonstrations) for change. Whilst there has not been a revolution here at
TEMS yet, there has certainly been a growing revelation. This new ´unveiling´ and discovery has been the
emergence of outstanding geographical creativity and amateur dramatic skills from TEMS students!
Undoubtedly, the panache and inspiration of their Art and Drama teachers have a lot to do with this.
Nevertheless, this new geographical force unearthed itself this year like an uplifted fold mountain and it has
run wild across the third floor plain of the secondary department, like one of those recent Oklahoma
tornadoes. Some of the visual evidence is shown below but more memorably in the outstanding poster and
leaflet presentation work that was completed throughout the academic year. Year 7 tackled themes on
Australia, Year 8 illustrated Spain´s Farming pattern and some common types of Pollution, Year 9 focused on
Italy´s regions, Year 10 tried their hand at River Cross-Sectional drawings using data they collected on the
Gredos trip and Year 11 publicised and displayed some contemporary geographical issues using powerpoints.
However, the highlight of the year was undoubtedly Year 9´s terrific ´role-play´ performances in class, as they
debated the ´pros and cons of the development of Alpine ski resorts´. After such mesmerizing performances
in class, surely, names like Beattie, Canovas, Esquinas, Cole and Ordoñez will be gracing our TV and Cinema
screens in the years to come!?

FRENCH Ma Routine – Carmen Vives( Year 10 CH).
Je me brosse
Je veux me
Ensuite, je me
Science
Once again it has been a fun filled
year in science with plenty of
experiments and exciting
excursions to help learning too!
Here are some of the best bits!
There is no better way to find out about
how the organ systems work than
getting your hands dirty with a
dissection as year 9 have been finding
out. During their topic on health and
fitness they dissected the heart and
lungs to see exactly how their
adaptations allow them to do their jobs!
Year 10 have been learning about the heart
and circulation. Here are some of them
measuring each others blood pressure.
Judging by their faces it wasn’t too high!
Year 9 also had a great
day at Cosmo caixa
science museum where
they found out about
exciting chemical
reactions and even
helped to carry some
out. Here’s Ivan, Jaime
and Alejandro testing
their strength using
pulleys!
Finally here’s 2 mammoth reporters from Year
7 who put together a special report on the
extinction of mammoths!

Year 9.
curiosas a profesionales.
