Mt Morgan homes to be
showcased in new project
Moving House: Looking over the Mount Morgan township, it can be hard to imagine a vast number of houses filling the countryside. Moving House
is an exciting new project set to showcase a number of homes originally in Mount Morgan. Photo by Silver Spur Photography.
There’s moving house… and then there’s literally moving
house.
Former Mount Morgan homes are the focus of a new and
exciting project currently being developed by the Museum
of Central Queensland Inc (MoCQ).
The project, known as “Moving House”, aims to identify
and showcase some of the houses moved from Mount
Morgan to sites throughout Central Queensland.
The project takes a particular focus on those that were
relocated during the 1920s. Initial research for the project
has shown that over 200 houses were relocated from
Mount Morgan by around the mid 20s, and that it didn’t
stop there.
Relocations during this time in Mount Morgan particularly
are associated with the alterations and later downturn of
the town’s first gold mining company.
Proving a momentous task, some houses were taken on a
precarious journey down the Razorback. These houses put
down stumps across the breadth of Central Queensland,
from Proserpine in the north to Blackall in the west. Many
were resited in Rockhampton and on the Capricorn Coast.
Jenny Lanyon, Research Assistant for the project said
current study is uncovering some fascinating tales.
“Interestingly, some of these houses have even been
moved more than once, with one going on a 50 year
holiday to the coast and then returning to its home town,
Mount Morgan.” Ms Lanyon said.
“While some of the houses being researched are virtually
in original condition, others have been renovated and
have become comfortable and modern residences.”
MoCQ Chair Catherine George said the project is an
excellent way to demonstrate how different communities
throughout the region are historically connected through
their built heritage.
“This number of relocations must have had a lasting
impact on Central Queensland and we want to highlight
this part of our region’s past.” Ms George said.
The committee will soon be calling for stories from
people who have knowledge of Mount Morgan relocated
houses.
Locals are invited to compile their stories and photos,
and post these on the MoCQ interactive website when it
goes live in August.
Be sure to watch for more details on Moving House later
this year.

This edition we will present “snippets” of our history
extracted from the Mount Morgan Historical Society
records that may have not been mentioned in previous
articles but are still very important in our history calendar.
Sadly, we have very few items of history recorded of
the last 40 years and so we are asking you, residents of
our town to put your thinking caps on and please advise
MMPAD of items you think worthy of recording. Future
generations need to know of our history.
1900: Our original Court House was situated at the lower
end of Morgan Street, just over from Anzac Park but in
1900 saw the building of our present Court House, now
the Police Station. It is a very impressive building which
clearly shows the wealth of Mount Morgan in those early
times. The Court mainly dealt with mining claims and
disputes. In 1974 it was classifies by the National Trust
of Queensland as an historic building.
1902:This was a time of a serious drought in the area and
a Mr Clement Wragge set up a Tiger-Vortex-Rain-Gun
in the football field (now Newman Park) with the idea
to “shoot the clouds” and produce the much needed rain.
Unfortunately the experiment was unsuccessful but he
did have the right idea as in more recent times aeroplanes
attempt “seeding the clouds” to bring rain.
1903:The famous “Dee Gold Rush” at Struck Oil
happened when the finding of alluvial gold was discovered
and over one thousand miners went to the fields. Quite a
number of valuable large nuggets were unearthed and so
new shops and dwellings were erected but the gold rush
soon petered out.
1908: One night in November in the old movie theatre
(the Olympia, situated in East Street past Meals on
Wheels building) a huge crowd was present to witness a
big boxing tournament, apparently quite an attraction in
those days. During the evening an announcement relayed
that there had been a fall of earth and stones in the Mine
resulting in the death of 5 miners. The tournament was
terminated abruptly.

65 Morgan Street (Formerly Rainbow Cafe)
1911: In our early records it is indicated that Mount
Morgan always produced some outstanding sports people
and sport was well patronised. One special representative
game reports that a local Rugby Union Team was to play
New South Wales in a match on the field, now Newman
Park. Of the local team thirteen were Mount Morgan
players. The game could not commence until some of our
players came from work, the result - locals 9, NSW 6.
More Snippets to come.

For Mount Morgan’s Meals on Wheels, volunteer
assistance has long been seen as a driving force and one
of the key ingredients to its success.
More on Meals on Wheels:
Recognised as “more than just a meal”, Meals on Wheels
is about teamwork and care in the community.
Last week saw the local organisation acknowledge the
dedicated efforts of one of its devoted volunteers; long
term member and local resident, Mrs Elaine Millers.
Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious meals, and
provides interaction and regular visits to members of the
community.
In recognition of her invaluable support given to the
organisation over many years, Mrs Millers was recently
presented with a certificate of appreciation, along with
gifts.
While disability and age may decrease some people's
ability to get out and about, Meals on Wheels helps make
it possible to stay in their homes, and maintain some
independence.
Mrs Millers recently stood down from the position of
President, following more than a decade being in the role.
Mount Morgan’s Meals on Wheels works together with
the Mount Morgan Hospital to see meals delivered to
members of the community three times a week; with
cooking carried out by staff of the Hospital and deliveries
and visits made by Meals on Wheels volunteers.
Though, stepping down from the position certainly
doesn’t mean stepping away from the organisation.
The dedicated local remains actively involved with the
group; something she has done for many years.
Mrs Millers’ ten years as President make up part of 30+
years of involvement with Mount Morgan Meals on
Wheels.
Discussing her time with the local organisation, Mrs
Millers said she became involved
when she saw the necessity for more
volunteers.
For more information on Meals on Wheels and how
you too can become involved, please phone: 4938 1935
(Mount Morgan Meals on Wheels).
Pictured: Elaine Millers (right) is presented with a certificate of
appreciation by Mount Morgan Meals on Wheels President, Mrs
Margaret Pearce.
“The local group were short of
volunteers.
“I was asked if I would be interested
in helping out, and well, that’s where it
started.” Mrs Millers said.
“I began delivering on the town run
and it went from there – I also became
an offsider for one of the cooks for a
time, and supported the Treasurer with
bookwork.”
Three decades on, Mrs Millers says she
has, and continues to sincerely enjoy
being involved in the local group.
“It’s a labour of love really.”
“You know that the need is there and
people really appreciate what you do.”

Whether you consider yourself a believer or a sceptic,
there’s no denying the interest that a ghostly tale receives.
“In many cases, suspected paranormal activity can in fact
be manmade or natural interferences.”
Stories or experiences of noises in the night, things
mysteriously missing or even an apparition... Is it
paranormal activity or something more “simply”
explained?
Darren said a variety of reasons can be behind a strange
experience – including electrical issues, reflections, even
irregular power supply which at times can cause a person
to feel strange or dizzy.
Last week we caught up with Susan Bowes and Darren
Davies (pictured right) – two Queenslanders whose
occupation is to investigate this very thing.
For Mount Morgan’s investigation however, Darren says
he is expecting some very interesting and exciting results.
The pair make up part of the team of Paranormal Paratek
Queensland; a non-profit group that conducts scientific
investigations and research into local tales and reported
hauntings.
Darren and Susan visited the local area last week as part
of an investigation trip around various parts of Central
Queensland.
The local area was the first stop for the duo on the
investigation itinerary; invited to Mount Morgan by local
resident and President of the Mount Morgan Historical
Museum, Dasher Hunt.
Spending two days in Mount Morgan, Paratek conducted
investigations in various local establishments; including
the current Historical Museum building, as well as the
Leichhardt and Grand hotels.
“We’re really looking forward to the review process,”
Darren said.
“We have had interferences with our equipment and also
some interesting things take place during some of the
nights.”
“It all makes us look forward to the results.”
Paratek will soon be reviewing their audio and visual
recordings, with a report of their local findings anticipated
in the upcoming weeks.
Note: an interview with Darren Davies discussing his visit to
Mount Morgan can be found online at the ABC Capricornia
website. Search for the story at:
http://www.abc.net.au/capricornia/
Pictured: Paratek Secretary, investigator and research assistant, Susan
Bowes and Paratek President and founder, Darren Davies.
Discussing the investigation process, Darren
said the team endeavour to capture hard
proof of paranormal activity.
“We set up portable equipment to try and
capture evidence – audio and/or visual.”
“We’re on a quest to find something.” Darren
said.
Darren said investigations not only include
efforts to capture proof of a haunting, but
also study into other possible explanations
behind a spooky experience.
“During investigations, we try and expose
other reasons behind a suspected haunting.”
Darren said.

A number of Mount Morgan voters decided to find out
the kinds of issues that matter most to people in the local
area; hosting a grass roots political GetTogether last
Thursday.
The GetTogethers, which have the backing of advocacy
group known as “GetUp”, were designed to encourage
locals to come together and discuss the issues they think
are important in the lead up to the federal election later
this year.
Locals discussed a variety of subjects at the Leichhardt
Hotel as part of the evening last week; with talk ranging
from public transport in rural areas to equal available
resources for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The evening was one of 400 GetTogethers held around
the country last Thursday evening; focusing on voter’s
issues, rather than the support of particular political
parties.
Publican of the Leichhardt Hotel and member of GetUp,
Andrew Adam said the GetTogethers evening served as
a reminder that there is a lot at stake at the next election.
“Grass roots issues are always important and it was great
to have an opportunity to discuss these kinds of issues
and try and bring them to attention.”
GetUp National Director Sam McLean said the
GetTogethers were designed to start a national
conversation.
“We feel it is incredibly important that people engage in
the political process,” Mr McLean said.

A man is driving along a highway and sees a rabbit jump out
across the middle of the road. He swerves to avoid hitting it, but
unfortunately the rabbit jumps right in front of the car.
The driver, a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulls
over and gets out to see what has become of the rabbit. Much to
his dismay, the rabbit is the Easter Bunny, and he is DEAD .
The driver feels so awful that he begins to cry. A beautiful red
headed woman driving down the highway sees a man crying on
the side of the road and pulls over. She steps out of the car and
asks the man what's wrong. "I feel terrible," ! he explains,
"I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny with my car and KILLED
HIM."
The red head says, "Don't worry." She runs to her car and pulls
out a spray can. She walks over to the limp, dead Easter Bunny,
bends down, and sprays the contents onto him. The Easter
Bunny jumps up, waves its paw at the two of them and hops off
down the road. Ten feet away he stops, turns around and waves
again, he hops down the road another 10 feet, turns and waves,
hops another ten feet, turns and waves, and repeats this again
and again and again and again, until he hops out of sight. The
man is astonished!! He runs over to the woman and demands,
"What’s in that can? What did you spray on the Easter Bunny ?"
The woman turns the can around so that the man can read the
label. It says…… (get ready it’s worth the wait)……………...
"Hair Spray—Restores life to dead hair, and
adds permanent wave."

Bowling enthusiasts and members of
the Mount Morgan community banded
together last Saturday to raise funds for
a much deserving cause and to honour
the memory of a much loved local.
Over 30 people headed to the Mount
Morgan Welfare Bowls Club last
Saturday for the Saint Paddy’s Day
Bowls, Alex Teeney Memorial.
The event, which was presented by
Mount Morgan Rotary and hosted by
the Welfare Bowls Club, saw over $550
raised for Prostate Cancer research.
The event was held in honour of much
loved Irishman – Mr Alex Teeney,
who sadly lost his battle with cancer in
October, 2012.
Previous years saw Mr Teeney arrange
a bowling day each Saint Patrick’s
Day; encouraging locals to get into
the Irish spirit while raising funds for the Mount Morgan Rotary
Club.
Last Saturday’s event saw the tradition continue, with many
adding a shade of jade to their outfits for the Irish occasion.
Attendees enjoyed a full afternoon of bowls as part of the event,
before retiring for a barbeque and drinks at the clubhouse.
The event also saw raffles and multidraw raffles held, with prizes
donated by Mt Morgan News, Mt Morgan Rotary and local
residents, Mr Joe James and Mr Col Barney.
Pictured (top photo): Winners for the afternoon bowls were Barry Chandler and Les
Tysoe. (L- R): Joe James, Barry Chandler, Les Tysoe and Abbie Rowe.
Pictured (right): Many attendees went green for the Saint Paddy’s Day event,
with some even donning impressive Irish gear for the occasion. Pictured are Dave
Thornton, Abbie Rowe and Wally Edwards (March 16, 2013).
The Grand goes green: The Grand Hotel hosted an
all Irish occasion for Saint Patrick’s Day last Sunday;
treating patrons to Guinness Pie, Irish music and free
face paintings and hairspray. Pictured are Grand Hotel
Managers, Graham Sibley and Andrew Smith enjoying
the revelries. Photo supplied by Georgie Maher.
Saint Paddy’s pic at the Post Office: Local resident, Jill
Bryant snapped this happy snap last week; of Postmaster
Ian Traynor in the Saint Paddy’s spirit- wearing his green
hat to work. Customers, Val Staines and Judith Curtis
happily stopped for a pic with him.

This year’s Holi at the Mount Morgan Dam once again proved a great day.
There were roughly equal numbers
of locals and visitors, who had come
together to celebrate this unique cultural
festival. The event encourages attendees
to shed all inhibitions and just be silly for
a day.
Traditionally this involves spraying each
other with vegetable dyes or throwing
coloured powder until one is scarcely
recognisable.
A dip in the Dam was more than welcome
as the day was sunny and warm.
The day, which was hosted by the Indian
Association of Central Queensland,
also included an eclectic feast of Indian
and Australian fare. This was quickly
devoured by those present and it took an
iron stomach to cope with hot curries,
savoury dips, daal and lamingtons washed
down with fruit juice.
Everyone is looking forward to next year’s madness!
Well folks, the Golden Mount Festival will be on again
in just a matter of weeks, and with that comes one of
the area’s most iconic competitions… the Running of the
Cutter Relay Race.
With an increase in prize money up for grabs, the Golden
Mount Festival (GMF) Committee is welcoming all to
take up the challenge.
Interested?? Here’s what you need to know…
• The iconic race sees teams of six faceoff; each beginning
and ending in Mount Morgan’s central business area, at
the Running of the Cutter Statue.
• Participants are required to run between the four local
pubs, downing a glass of beer at the end of each leg.
• The first team to have a competitor back at the statue
and see the final teammate finish off a billycan of beer is
declared the reigning champions, and proud winners of
the well sought after prize money.
A junior division is also included for those under the
legal drinking age, with beer traded for soft drink.
With nominations for the race now open, GMF
Coordinator, Jordana Aston welcomes all to take part.
“The Running of the Cutter is open to males and females,
juniors and seniors, and locals and visitors.
“So if you are up to the challenge, we would love to
welcome you to the event.” Ms Aston said.
“It’s a whole lot of fun – and if you are lucky enough,
you will get to take home a whole lot of cash for your
hard efforts.”
All smiles: attendees having a great time at the festival of colours, held
at the Mount Morgan Dam last Saturday. Article and photo supplied.
And Ms Aston is right on the money when describing
this year’s prizes. Prize money for the Senior Division
is a whopping $1,800 for first place and an impressive
$900 for second place winners. Junior Division also sees
a major prize set – with $900 up for grabs for first place
winners and $450 for second place.
Further details on registration and fees can be
obtained from the Golden Mount Festival Committee:
[email protected] / 0467 473 458.
The Running of the Cutter will take place during the
Saturday festivities of the Golden Mount Festival, held
on May 4th.

Mount Morgan Range
closure - update
Transport and Main Roads is continuing to monitor 35
landslips on the Mount Morgan Range, with geotechnical
specialists working with local engineers to plan repairs.
Further rainfall in the past fortnight has restricted access
to the site and the ongoing wet conditions have resulted
in further movement at some of the landslips.
The department has also sought approval from the federal
government to relocate a number of protected Cycad
plants which are within the work area.
The Burnett Highway reconstruction between
Bouldercombe and Mount Morgan is still expected
to take six months to complete. During this time,
Razorback Road will remain the alternate route between
Rockhampton and Mount Morgan.
The Burnett Highway (Mount Morgan Range) is one of
Central Queensland’s three highest priority reconstruction
projects following the January and February regional
flooding, also including Double Creek Bridge on the
Dawson Highway and Gladstone-Monto Road between
Many Peaks and Monto.
Motorists are reminded that with predictions for further
rain over the next week, road conditions can change
quickly and to drive to the conditions at all times.
If it’s flooded, forget it.
Update provided by Transport and Main Roads.

Wishing everyone a very happy and enjoyable Easter.
Please drive safely, and if you are driving on unsealed
roads, please take extra care. Also, please take extra
care if roads become flooded, don't take the risk, if
the depth doesn't stop you, the flow could wash your
car off the floodway.
We have a lot of damaged roads since the last flood
and recent heavy rain, so please slow down and drive
to conditions.
With the closure of the Burnett Highway, there is
double the amount of traffic on the Razor Back Road.
Regards,
Cr Ellen Smith

...From your State MP
Easter is a great time to travel and enjoy celebrations
with family and friends across the State and if you are
travelling this Easter that means taking care on the road.
With the early start to school holidays, police have
accelerated the road safety campaign ahead of the official
national Easter period, which starts Thursday. Covert and
marked speed cameras, random breath test patrols and
thousands of police officers will sweep the state’s roads.
Consider the impact of poor driving decisions, not only
on yourself but on your family and other motorists. Be
patient, concentrate and focus on the task of driving
safely. With people travelling to holiday destinations
within Queensland and interstate, it is important motorists
take care, obey road rules and be aware of driver fatigue.
Congratulations:
Congratulations to the Mt Morgan Rugby Union Club
on your approval for funding of $2182.00 under the
Queensland Government’s Get Going program.
This funding will now allow the club to conduct a five
week Rookies2Reds participation program and purchase
$878 worth of training and playing equipment to support
rugby union at Mount Morgan.

A Great Start to get into your new first home:
The Great Start Grant is a Queensland Government
initiative to help first home owners to get their new first
home sooner. You’ll get $15,000 towards buying or
building your new house, unit or townhouse (valued at
less than $750,000). You can even buy off the plan or
choose to build yourself. It’s a great opportunity to buy
or build a new home in our great state.
In 2012, the Queensland Government introduced a
special new grant for first home owners who are buying
or building a new home. Previously known as the First
Home Owners Construction Grant, those eligible will

economic development for the local area, and are
regularly developing and assisting with projects along
this focus.
Here is a little into some of our current and future projects:
Mount Morgan Pride in your Town Awards:
As you may have already read on our Facebook page or
in the insert in this issue of the Argus, we are excited to
introduce the Mount Morgan Pride in your Town Awards.
These awards aim to strengthen community spirit and
also provide an opportunity for the community to show
appreciation for those who help to make Mount Morgan
a place to live and love.
Pictured: students of Mount Morgan Central were presented with Clean
Up Australia Day participation certificates on parade last Tuesday, by
Mount Morgan Rotary member, Del Rowley.
We would also like to thank the Welfare Bowls Club and
all who participated in the Saint Paddy’s Day Bowls last
Saturday, and helped to make the event so enjoyable.
This year was our first Saint Patrick’s Day without
dedicated Rotarian, community member and Irishman,
Mr Alex Teeney, following his passing in 2012. It was
a privilege to hold the event in honour of Alex and see
funds raised and donated to Cancer research.
(See page 6 of this issue for photos and details of the
Saint Paddy’s Day event).
Membership:
The Mount Morgan Rotary Club meets each Thursday
evening at the Leichhardt Hotel, Mount Morgan. New
members are always welcome to the club.
For further details on how to become a member, please
phone Del on: 0418 186 124.

upcoming issue of the Argus??

Or pop in and see us at our office: 61 Morgan Street.
There are six fantastic categories as part of the awards, so
be sure to stop by our office (61 Morgan Street) or head
online to our website (www.mountmorgan.org.au) for
full category details, nomination forms and guidelines.
Nominations close April 29, with an official presentation
to take place during the Golden Mount Festival. (Time
and venue details for the presentation will be announced
closer to this date.)
Some of the other projects we currently have in the
pipeline include:
• Promotional materials– one of our priority projects set
for 2013 is the development of new promotional material.
Currently, this includes a brochure and a town map.
• Promotional opportunities - we are also investigating
promotional and collective advertising opportunities
for our local area; including billboard advertising, pull
up banner displays and various continued collective
marketing opportunities such as TV and radio.
For more information on these, and all other MMPAD
projects, please contact our office.
Monthly reports of MMPAD’s projects are available,
provided by our Project Officer, Camille Steinberger.
Please feel free to collect a copy from our office and keep
up to date with our past, current and future proposed
community projects.

A Cloudy Picture
A poem by Frank Clark
For some time clouds covered the sky
Enough time for the grass to grow high
Must say the prominent colour is green
Mother Nature’s soothing environment scene
Water splashes over the spillway on its way down
As my ears recall the rippling sounds
Greenery and running water brings contentment
Banishing anguish and resentment
The bush canary’s song on the gum tree tops
Reveals happiness and freedom even if it is cold or hot
A lizard runs along a branch, a frog hops on a log
Are we content as a tail wagging dog
Every cloud is hiding a silver lining
Sunshine is what the clouds have been hiding
The sun bursts forth hot and bright again
It’s so hot, to cool it down we need some rain
The black cockatoo when it flies reveals black and red
Nature’s combination, enough said
A smile, a word, an act of kindness makes another life
bright
Can one say, I am glad I met you alright
A smile on a dial let your speech reconcile
May take awhile but it will be worthwhile
Can’t walk up and down razorback to prove you are
alive
Be a bridge to put on a face a smile
Memory records faces and places and enjoyable times
Don’t let clouds or age take away what the mind has
enshrined
Things lost from the past can be recalled from a place, a
photo, a name
Then you know to forget sometimes, is no shame
When blue is the sky
And the grass is not dry
When running water gurgles
Don’t make hurdles
When you hear a bird song
Someone needs a help along
When the sun is shining
Clouds have a silver lining
Book reviews by local resident,
Karletta A.
The Casual Vacancy
By J.K. Rowling
Engaging, fascinating and insightful on human
behaviours.
4 stars ****
The Casual Vacancy is set in a small country town
in England, and you see events through the eyes of a
number of residents.
I became very interested in each character’s life,
sometimes wishing their chapter didn’t end.
The residents whose thoughts we witness include
teenagers, married couples, single adults, and the
elderly.
A number of dramas and life situations are experienced
including a daughter of a drug addict, a son of an
abusive father, a bully and the victim, a mother in a
lifeless marriage, and a deli store owner.
Being a witness to their thoughts allows you to know
the things they wished they could say and do, but
didn’t. It is also an interesting study in how often
people misread our intentions, and how often we do
it to others.
The Casual Vacancy has lighthearted moments and
comedy scattered throughout that also made it a joy
to read.
This book is also available as an audiobook on
Audible.com.
A little about Karletta A...
In 1999 Karletta created “Cookies Youth Magazine” in
Brisbane, and has written two non-fiction e-books, as
well as a children’s book for her nieces and nephews.
Her ebooks on Community Event Management and
Public Speaking are available on request.

Sweet and Sour
Pineapple Pork
Spare Ribs
The Mount Morgan Men’s shed has
commenced activities.
It now has its management committee
elected and key areas of activity to begin
with are wood turning and basic leather work
whip making.
Initially the Mount Morgan Mens Shed will be
open on Saturdays for wood turning. Other
activities will be evening bookings only. This
will change as interest develops.
Membership is essential. Yearly membership
is $20.00. Some material costs will be
required depending projects.
For further information contact:
Peter Edman on 0487828444
or email: [email protected]
Okay, here is an easy one with no “chilli” for Val. A
one pot dish, which will become a family favourite and a
party dish to win a hungry crowd.
Ingredients:
• 1.5kg pork spare ribs or diced pork
• 440g pineapple pieces (chunks & syrup)
• ¾ cup white vinegar
• ¾ cup raw sugar
• ½ cup soy sauce (light)
• ½ cup tomato sauce
• 1ltr chicken stock
• A little cornflour to thicken the sauce
Method:
This is so easy and can be done any way you like.
Okay, I used whole Chinese pork spare ribs, but you can
cut them up in pieces or use lovely lean or diced pork.
Now here is the easy part. I mixed everything except
the pork into a pot and heat up to dissolve the sugar and
make sure you use the pineapple juice. Now the next part
is up to you.
Add the pork and you can either boil for 10 minutes then
simmer for 2 ½ hours, or you can put in a casserole dish
or baking dish and cook at 180 degrees for 2 ½ hours or
30 minutes in the pressure cooker.
Serve with what you like. Rice or Polenta or potatoes or
as part of a Chinese banquet. A nice ice cold beer or a
ice cold pineapple and coconut juice.
