Hello Flutists! Welcome to another great
year with the Central Ohio Flute
Association! We have several guest artists
coming throughout the year to give
masterclasses, recitals, and presentations
on the Ohio State campus, including:
Nancy Toff, Lindsey Goodman, and
Greg Patillo, so stay tuned! This is going
to be an exciting year, to say the least.
Interested in becoming a

Our guest artist for our 30th annual Flute
Festival is Mark Sparks! He has held the
Principal Flute position of the St. Louis
Symphony since 2000 and is a former
faculty member of the Peabody Institute.
His experience and expertise will be
shared with all of us during the upcoming
Flute Festival held on April 13, 2013. I
am looking forward to an incredible year!

Mark Sparks
Appointed Principal Flute of the St. Louis
Symphony Orchestra in 2000, acclaimed for
his colorful tone and spirited phrasing, Mark
Sparks has firmly established himself as a
leading American orchestral flutist and
teacher. He has performed in both solo and
ensemble roles in the United States, Europe,
South America, and Asia with numerous
orchestras, including guest appearances with
the New York Philharmonic, Cincinnati
Symphony, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
In addition, Mr. Sparks was Associate
Principal Flute with the Baltimore Symphony
under David Zinman. Mr. Sparks has also
performed as Principal Flute of the San
Antonio Symphony, Memphis Symphony,
and Canton Symphony. He began his career
in Venezuela with the Caracas Philharmonic.
A frequent guest at summer music festivals and
orchestral training programs, this year Mr. Sparks
returns to the Aspen Music Festival and School
where for 16 summers he has been an artist-faculty
member and Co-principal Flute of the Aspen
Chamber Symphony and Festival Orchestra. He

invited to perform at the National Flute
Association Convention in New York City.
Mr. Sparks can be heard on a solo album for the Summit
label, as well as the St. Louis Symphony's recent releases,
and with other orchestras on the Telarc, Decca, and Sony
labels. He has been interviewed by numerous publications,
including Time magazine, and in various trade publications,
for which he has also published performance articles. He is
featured in Windplayer magazine's feature on the nation's
top 10 principal flutists, and is included with distinguished
colleagues in the book 101 Inspirational Stories from the
World's Best Flute Players.

2012 Flute Events in Central Ohio
OSU High School Honor Band
In January, high school students from around the state
participated in an honor band at The Ohio State
University. Students attended a performance by the
Wind Symphony and participated in rehearsals
throughout the weekend. Their efforts culminated in a
final concert on Sunday, January 15, 2012. This year’s
honor band takes place January 18—20, 2013.
Mary Kay Fink Masterclass
On April 30, students at Ohio State participated in a
masterclass with guest artist, Mary Kay Fink, piccoloist in the
Cleveland Orchestra. Ms. Fink worked with three students on
both flute and piccolo and shared some meaningful insight on
orchestral excerpts and the Vivaldi piccolo concerti.
OSU Flute Workshop
50 high school students took part in the Ohio State Flute
Workshop this June. During the workshop, students
participated in masterclasses, took theory courses,
worked with coaches in small ensembles, and received
private lessons. Next year’s workshop will be held June
16—20, 2013.
Schwantner at Ohio State
In April, students and faculty at Ohio State
participated in the Contemporary Music Festival
featuring the works of Joseph Schwantner. Professor
Katherine Borst Jones performed Looking Back and
graduate students Rachel Haug, Yoonee Kim,
Robert Shane Paul, and Erin Helgeson Torres
performed his flute quartet, Silver Halo. The graduate
students also had the opportunity to work with Flute
Force, the group for whom the piece was written, in
their preparation of Silver Halo.

Carol Wincenc Masterclass
On March 24, 2012, Carol Wincenc presented a
masterclass at Ohio State. Students worked with Ms.
Wincenc on solo repertoire and orchestral excerpts.

New York Woodwind Quintet
Masterclass
In March 2012, the New York Woodwind Quintet
offered a masterclass to chamber ensembles at
Ohio State, made possible by Chamber Music
Columbus. The Venti Volare quintet, comprised of
graduate students Rachel Haug (flute), Stephanie
Kunz (oboe), Jacqueline Bretz Eichhorn (clarinet),
Katey Jahnke (horn), and John Gorman (bassoon)
worked with the New York Woodwind Quintet
and also had the opportunity to perform at the
Southern Theater in downtown Columbus prior to
an inspiring performance by the professional
ensemble.

Upcoming Flute Events in Central Ohio
October 1: Lindsey Goodman at Ohio State
On October 1st, Lindsey Goodman will perform an
electroacoustic recital and teach a masterclass at Ohio State
University in Columbus, Ohio. Signature works by Rob Deemer
(The Road From Hana), Grant Cooper (Other Voices...), Eve
Beglarian (I Wi! Not Be Sad In This World), Roger Zahab
(suspicion of nakedness), Elainie Lillios (Among Fireflies), and
Mathew Rosenblum (Under the Rainbow) will be featured. The
6:30 pm recital and 7:30 pm masterclass in Hughes Hall are open

October 7: EOS Duo in Concert
The EOS duo, comprised of Kimberlee Goodman
(flute) and Karl Wohlwend (guitar) will present a
free concert at Grace Lutheran Church in
Westerville, Ohio. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
October 15: Nancy Toff at Ohio State
Renowned flutist and scholar Nancy Toff will be on the
Ohio State campus on October 15 as part of a collaborative
concert with faculty woodwind quintet, the Scarlet Winds,
to present a concert of published and unpublished works.
The concert, entitled “Scarlet Winds and Friends,” begins
at 8 p.m. in Weigel Hall Auditorium.
February 9, 2013: Westerville Symphony
The Westerville Symphony will perform a program entitled “Tunes-n-Tales” featuring Peter and the
Wolf. The concert is free to the public and takes place at the Westerville Public Library in
Westerville, Ohio. Concert times are 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m.
March 2, 2013: Flute Choir Day
This event takes place on the campus of Otterbein University. Please visit the website for more

Highlights from 2012 National Flute Association
Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada
This year heralded the 40th anniversary of the
National Flute Association, and many flutists
from Central Ohio participated in this
momentous occasion. Audrey Watkins was a
finalist in the High School Soloist Competition;
Katherine Borst Jones, Professor of Flute at
Ohio State, and George Pope, Professor of
Flute at the University of Akron and lecturer at
Baldwin Wallace, both performed during events
at the convention; and Dr. Kimberlee
Goodman, adjunct professor at Otterbein
University, organized equipment needs for the
event.
