Community Investors:
Rebecca &
Ted Goodman
The JCC is a place for individuals to grow and
learn, whether it’s to work out, learn to paint or
meet new friends at a Dive & Dine. We see our
members through so many
life changes from 12 weeks
old in Early Childhood
to our Silver Sneakers
members and everything
in between.
Rebecca and Ted Goodman are members who
not only use our facilities
but also donate time and
money to make this an
even better place. The
couple met at a Shabbat
dinner at the University
of Arizona Hillel Foundation. Rebecca was
working for the Jewish Federation of Southern
Arizona and one of her many projects included
Young Jewish Tucson. She asked Ted to be on
the committee and they met monthly to plan
events, and eventually started dating.
Since this program was a joint effort with the
JCC, Rebecca saw the wonderful programs and
services the J offered. Ted had taken a tour of the
J with the Federation’s Young Men’s Group and
was especially impressed with the Special Needs

Continued, from front cover
Taglit program. Rebecca was completing grad
school and Ted asked her what she would like as
a gift. She said she would like a JCC membership.
He added her as his significant other and Rebecca
says, “I knew it was true love.” The couple has
now been married a year and a half.
Although they first joined for the top-notch
fitness facility, they have become involved
with so many more facets of the J. Ted joined
the Board of Directors and the couple recently
became Stars of Giving donors and Legacy
Circle Members, “because we feel it’s important
to sustain Jewish community, culture, and
much-needed services to our local community,”
Ted said.
“We could see how the JCC would fit every
single angle of raising our Jewish family. From
the Early Childhood program to the Weintraub
Israel Center…and of course the Friday challah
pickup at the Welcome Desk.” Rebecca said. She
only has to walk across the parking lot to pick up
this weekly Shabbat necessity.
She added, “We hope to inspire others to support
their communities – and anyone can do this at
any age, no matter where they are in their lives.
We are so lucky to be a part of such a vibrant
community and we know this is due in large part
to the many that came before us. We want to
sustain this sense of community and educational
opportunities for many generations to come.”

JCC Star Makes
National Team
Dakota Kordsiemon has been playing competitive basketball and
swimming since he was six years old. He played at the TJCC Sunday
Basketball league through sixth grade, helping the team win first place,
four times and was selected to the TJCC All Star team in its first and only
year. He has played club ball since he was in the 4th grade and now plays
on a nationally known club team: DreamVision 2015. While playing
basketball, Dakota has also been on the TJCC competitive swim team.
Competitive swimming has
helped him with his strength and
conditioning for basketball. In
August 2010 and 2011, Dakota
went to the USA Maccabi games
(representing Team Tucson) in
Omaha and Israel on the TJCC
swim team. He ended up winning
a total 13 medals, most of them
gold.
Dakota applied for the USA Jr.
National Macabbi Basketball
Team, which played in the 12th
Annual Pan Am Maccabi Games,
held in Sao Paulo, Brazil over
winter break. Dakota had to
send in game tapes showing his
ability in the sport to even be
considered. During the summer,
he received a letter that he was
selected to represent the USA. The
USA Jr. National Basketball team
ended up with the Bronze medal,
beating Team Canada. His goal is
to make the USA Youth National
Maccabiah team which competes
in Israel, every four years. The
next Maccabiah games will be
held in Israel in 2013.

As summer approaches, we all
need to be conscious about little
ones around the water. Effective
supervision is the first and most
critical line of defense to prevent
drowning! Here are a few other tips
to ensure safety around water at
home and at the JCC.
• Phone - Never answer your phone
during supervision, as it will
distract you from watching your
child. Do carry a cell phone with
you in case of an emergency so
you can call 911.

lessons are an added layer
of protection, teaching your
child water survival skills in a
completely safe environment.
• Pool Toys - Keep temptation at
bay by storing all pool toys in
an area that is isolated from the
deck, such that the deck is kept
clean and clear.
• CPR - Learn to perform CPR
on children and adults and
remember to update those skills
regularly.

Childhood summers provide experiences that help
shape who you are today. All children deserve a
summer filled with arts, crafts, swimming, sports,
field trips, new friendships, smiles, laughter, and
so much more. Last summer, supporters like you
invested in summer camp scholarships and without
this support, these children would not have access
to this opportunity.
Please invest in a child by giving a gift that will
provide a summer full of soaring memories. To
help send a kid to camp, call 299-3000 or donate
online at www.tucsonjcc.org.
