EXECUTIVE MESSAGE
Greetings,
The mission of The First Tee of Greater New Orleans
is “to impact the lives of young people by providing
educational programs that build character, instill lifeenhancing values and promote healthy choices through
the game of golf.”
My role as Executive Director is operational: I oversee
programs, manage the daily operations and work with
the board to implement our strategic plan. Our goals
for 2011 are to raise awareness, forge new partnerships,
and increase fundraising and program expansion. Our
program philosophy is simple: deliver a program that
meets and exceeds the needs of the young people
we serve. TFTGNO coaches work tirelessly to provide
meaningful experiences that both educate and inspire, and we see success in our numbers.
In 2010, we served 688 young people through our life skills program and outreach initiatives.
Gender, race and socioeconomic status are immaterial in our program. We see golf as a
social sport; its residual effects lead to life long lessons and friends.
We continue to leverage and maximize our national and regional partnerships to make
TFTGNO a world-class junior golf program. With your continued support, we can create
opportunities to empower young people to make healthy and sound decisions. I am grateful
to the board of directors and the people of Greater New Orleans for the opportunity to serve
our young people and I challenge you to get involved. Volunteer! Become a Sponsor! Make
a difference in the lives of young people in the Greater New Orleans region.
Sincerely,
Dwayne Ray Cormier, M.Ed.

OUTREACH PROGRAMMING
A cooperative effort between The City of New Orleans

and NORDC centers. This provides young people with
a fun and safe environment that creates curiosity
about the game of golf.
THE ZURICH CLASSIC
THE FIRST TEE OF GREATER NEW ORLEANS &
FORE!KIDS FOUNDATION PARTNER
TO OFFER GOLF PROGRAMMING TO YOUTH
T
he First Tee of Greater New
Orleans is pleased to announce
a partnership with the
Fore!Kids Foundation, a local nonprofit that raises funds for children’s
charities through the game of golf. The
Foundation is the host organization
for Louisiana’s only PGA Tour event,
the Zurich Classic of New Orleans held
at TPC Louisiana. The partnership
programming includes a Monday golf
clinic for youth and a caddy day for
The First Tee of Greater New Orleans
participants at the Zurich Classic, and
other joint TFTGNO-Fore!Kids activities
throughout the year.
Tommy Fonseca, president of the
Fore!Kids Foundation and Tournament
Director for the Zurich Classic, said he
looks forward to working with TFTGNO.
“The partnership is a perfect fit,” he
said. “Our missions go hand-in hand. We
are more than excited to partner with
The First Tee of Greater New Orleans.”
The mission of The First Tee is to provide
educational programs that build
character, instill life-enhancing values
and promote healthy choices through
golf. Young people learn the nine core
values on area golf courses in a fun
and safe environment. The First Tee
nine core values are: Honesty, Integrity,
Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence,
Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy,
and Judgment. Participants are then
provided with the equipment necessary
for golf lessons and are taught how to
play the game.
“This partnership will allow The First
Tee of Greater New Orleans to grow
the game of golf in a strategic and
systematic way in the Greater New
Orleans region,” said Dwayne Ray
Cormier, M.Ed., Executive Director of
TFTGNO. “Through our partnership with
Fore!Kids we will be able to expand our
program in local schools and communities
through a number of south Louisiana
parishes: Orleans, Jefferson, Saint Tammany,
Plaquemines, Saint John The Baptist, and
Saint Charles, parishes” Cormier said.
In existence for over 53 years, the Fore!Kids
Foundation has raised nearly $20 million for
charities focused on providing healthcare,
education and social services for children.
Fonseca said their success is due to an
active and committed membership. “We
have approximately 200 members of the
local business community who are the
backbone of the Fore!Kids Foundation.
Members help us produce the Zurich
Classic, our major source of revenue,”
Fonseca said. “They take a very active
role in raising money year round for the
charities we serve.” 2011 marks Fonseca’s
19th year as a member of the Fore!Kids
Foundation, and his fifth year as president.
“
The partnership is a
perfect fit!”

THE BLANCO’S
TFTGNO SPOTLIGHT
WHY ENROLL YOUR CHILD IN TFTGNO?
Here is a Mom’s Perspective…
When Honduran natives Andrera and Fidel
Blanco moved to New Orleans, they knew
they would have to find a sports program for
their youngest son, Norman. “He was a very
social and active child and loved all sports,”
Andrera said. “ Summers were baseball, winter
was football. He spent most of his playtime in
NORD programs at Joe Brown Park,” she said.
When the Tiger Woods Foundation made available funding for a golf program in New
Orleans, Norman was introduced to golf. In 2003, Norman’s parents placed the eightyear-old in The First Tee‘s Junior Golf Program at Pontchartrain Park Golf Course.
“The program has been wonderful for him,” Andrera said. “He’s developed confidence
in everything he does. What did it for him was the volunteers and their mentoring.
Although he loves baseball and basketball and football, He picked golf. He got an
opportunity to play the game. All of the nurturing he received made a difference. They
would go out on the course after life skills lessons and learn how to play the game,” she
said.
Today, Norman Fidel Blanco is a high-achieving Junior at St. Augustine High School. His
mother says golf has become a passion. “Right now, he just wants to learn more and
play the game,” she said.

SPOTLIGHT: MEET COACH TERRY MAUNEY, PGA
Q: Coach, tell us about your background in Golf.
COACH’S SPOTLIGHT
TM: Golf has been my life since I was six-years-old, over 50 years now. It
paid for my education. I’ve been a professional golfer since 1972.
When I turned professional out of college, I played golf on the
PGA Tour. I was elected to PGA membership in 1980. I’ve been
the Director of Golf Instruction and the Golf Director at three Golf
Clubs in North Carolina. I played professional golf throughout all
of those years.
Q: How long have you been a golf instructor?
TM: I’ve been teaching Golf since 1975. I’ve been the Director of Instruction at Rockbarn Golf Club, Springs Golf Club, and Carolina
Crossing Golf Club. I believe I’ve taught over 4,000 lessons. I’ve worked in The First Tee
network since 2006.
Q: Why TFTGNO?
TM: It gives young people a chance to learn incredible life-enhancing values that the game
of golf teaches. Examples are respect for the game yourself and others. You learn how
to control your emotions, how to be confident and be responsible, how to make correct judgements, and how to set goals for your self. It’s very rewarding to give back a
lifetime of experience to these kids, to help them understand what life is all about and
to mold them into good kids, good citizens.
Q: What are your plans this year?
TM: Our goals for the program are to touch a thousand kids in the New Orleans area to
teach them what this great game is all about.
Q: How’s New Orleans treating you?
TM: Moved here in September of 2010 from North Carolina. New Orleans is a fun city. Everytime you turn around, people are having a party and a parade. People here are so
friendly, easy to get to know and talk to. Everywhere I go, people are nice to me. It’s a
great place to live.
