favorite songs among the crowd of 350 people.

President’s Message
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of Nepal
Seattle Society (NSS), I extend my best wishes to you and your family
on this joyous festival season. The richness of our heritage and
cultural diversity is evident by festivals we celebrate during this
season - Vijaya Dashami, Tihar, Mha Puja, Chhaith Parba.
NSS welcomes those who have recently joined our community in the
state of Washington. The number of people of Nepali origin who have
migrated from Bhutan has significantly increased in recent times.
Adjusting to a new place and a very different lifestyle in the USA is a
challenge. We are always here to assist you for your smooth transition into the new society.
The current Executive Committee has been in office for about a year. During this time, we have
successfully completed a number of programs. Among them, the pilot project of Nepali
language classes has been a notable achievement. Volunteer teachers, Mrs. Bandana
Shrestha, Mrs. Kalpana Sharma, Mr. Prakash Dhamala and Mrs. Ruby Shrestha worked
tirelessly to develop the curriculum and conduct classes. Along with Nepali language teaching,
we incorporated story-telling, singing and dancing. Students were eager to learn and
challenged the teachers to meet their higher expectations. We recently launched our new
website and are receiving great feedback. The credit goes to our Web Development
Sub-committee led by NSS Vice President Mr. Sampurna Prajapati. Highlights of our other
programs are published in this newsletter. Please visit us on the web at www.nepalseattle.org
for upcoming events and updates.
Our society is becoming stronger with active participation of our community members. We
have met many of our objectives, but we have still more to achieve. We will focus on programs
which are in the interest of our growing community. As always your support is much needed.
We really appreciate your participation and welcome you to join hands with us in future also.
Again, we wish you good health, happiness and prosperity.

The picturesque and panoramic hillside city of Nepal, Ilam, caught fire on February 16, 2010.
On that tragic day, 17 houses burnt to ashes and 48 other businesses and families were directly affected. In order to provide relief to those effected, Nepal Seattle Society collected $931

What is beauty?
By Ayusha Sanjel
When I was young I asked my grandmother if I was pretty or not and she said, “It’s not what's
on the outside but what's on the inside that makes a person beautiful”. I know we have heard
that a lot. But let’s face it, it is true. Start questioning your selves what beauty is, according to
Webster the word beauty is: a very attractive or seductive looking woman. But I believe beauty
is when we learn to be confident and love ourselves for who we are. For beauty is influenced at
times by media, we see those models in the ads, in magazines, the actresses in the movies
and we cannot help but compare ourselves to them, striving to look like them. But we should
remember we are not all the same we are unique, build differently. Beauty comes in every
shapes, sizes and colors. As you have probably heard before you have got to respect and love
yourself before you can feel good about yourself. Therefore one should not judge others on
what they look like but instead how they act like. Furthermore, the society puts a lot of pressure
on women to be admired; it focuses more on the external beauty. For instance even when you
are going shopping you look at the sizes zero, one, two, four and comparing your size will
make you feel fat. We visualize to ourselves if only I was skinny like her, if I had her hair, her
eyes but we have to learn to love our own skin and feel good even if you are a size twelve.
What size jeans you wear or what hairstyle you have doesn’t matter if you are happy. It is your
inner image that portrays who you are and describes you. So we have to be appreciative and
be thankful for what god gave us. For, it is beauty that captures your attention but personality
that captures your heart. So question yourself again what is the real meaning of beauty.
Nature
By Sarwesh Rauniyar
Nature is beautiful. It is full of living things and life. It has animals, plants and much more. The
rainforest is an example of nature at its best. Nature is an important thing to human race. People sometimes kill living animals to get rich. Now an example of that is some people kill elephants just because they want their ivory tusks because they want to get rich. That’s killing an
animal’s life! That is the wrong thing to do. Animals have homes like we do so we humans are
like animals because we have a lot in common. So I ask you to tell other people to not kill other
animals (if you know anyone). Thank you.
Sarwesh Rauniyar is a 4th Grader, aged 10.

Let’s Unite Together and Help Bring Change to Nepal
By Darshan Rauniyar, a Board Member of NSS ([email protected])
I took a flight from Delhi to Kathmandu in February 2010. I was, as always, and like many other
Nepalese living abroad, was feeling excited and nostalgic about this visit. The plane took off
and I was chatting with fellow travelers from France who were sitting next to me. An hour into
the flight into the pilot announced that we would be landing in 15minutes at the Tribhuvan
International Airport. I looked out the window with increasing excitement trying to capture the
descent on my video cam as I knew the scenery just before you land at the airport is
phenomenal. But quickly I began to get disappointed as I saw mountain slopes devoid of
greenery, deforestation, rivers and lakes without waters, our danda (hills) without vegetation.
The pollution making it very difficult to even get a glimpse of the Himalayan range.
We touched down and my eyes scanned the Himalayan range that was visible from the airport.
The weather was nice and bright with a little wind chill, as I stepped onto Nepalese soil I bent
down and touched our Matribhumi. I proceeded to Immigration, this time I had brought a photo
with me as I was going to apply for a tourist visa on my arrival. I was puzzled and perplexed at
the wait time to get to the visa, the wait was long, tedious and slow. I was thinking when would
Nepal change and what kind of impression we are making on new tourists. I submitted my
paperwork and visa fee, and had conversation with the immigration officer. I asked “Kasto
hunuhuncha? Desh ko ke haal khabar cha? He looked at my last name and said “Rauniyarji,
desh ko haal ahile think chaina tara yastai ta honi, aaba hamro desh dui barsa me think huncha”. I utterly responded “Maile Desh ko unati hamro jana andolan pachi ta chadai huncha
jasto lageko thiyo, tara aaba bidesh ma baseko manche, padhe lekheko and budhiman haru ko
jaruri cha, desh banaunu ma”. I could clearly see his was surprised and told me “Khoi desh ma
ta paisa pathaune kaam ta Nepali haru Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai bata dherai chaan. America
ma basne haru le ta dherai paisa pathayeko lagdaina”. I took my passport and thanked him
and headed to claim my luggage and proceeded out of the airport.
Upon my arrival, I was quickly surrounded by our brother taxi drivers who were eager to take
me to my destination. I asked how was their business and one dai responded “Tel ko bhau
dherai bhai sakya dai, ke garne, manche haru pauna garho cha..desh ko gati thik chaina”. I
saw my cousin waiting to pick me up and told the taxi driver “lata pheri bhetaula”. I was
delighted to see my cousins and relatives. We drove to our home.
I was in Kathmandu for 6 days; this time was a short visit. I settled in my room and my cousins
were telling me “Darshan dai, ahile bijuli chaina ani pachi matra auncha”. I uttered, “Kehi
chaina, yasto kaha pauncha ra America ma, malai ta ramro lagcha”. My cousins were all
surprised to hear this particular line.
I went about my daily chores of meeting and greeting friends and family members. I was disheartened to hear the stories in Nepal. People talked about their frustrations in getting basic
amenities and rise in rampant corruption, no government leadership in maintaining law and
order, extortions, murder, kidnapping, killings, threats, bandhs on and on . I was saddened as I
heard these stories again and again. Only Nepalese people know what they are going thru and
how they are living in this dire situation. Nepal is having brain drain problems with everyone
wanting to leave this beautiful country. One cannot walk past 8PM as all the shopping
complexes and malls close before and streets are deserted with no lights. You do not even see
Year 7, Issue 10

Page 12
those cows that used to roam the street and stray dogs that used to chase people and monkeys running around house to house. Even animal have taken shelter. What has happened to
our country? When I was growing up they all were our friends – people, animal, birds etc.
I remember one incident of a gun fire in Battisputali that someone has been shot. This became
BIG news in Nepal and you see people were flocking to Bir hospital to see the perpetrator and
people were wondering where the gun came from. People were puzzled and shocked to hear
news about the gun shot. This was Nepal back then and now gun shots are a daily affair and
make the headlines every day.
Indeed, Nepal has gone through some challenging times, ruled by 240 yrs of Rana and Shah
Dynasties. After a long struggle and Jana Andolan I, we brought democracy in 1990s and jubilant Nepalese celebrated the birth of a new era. It was then that the Nepalese people were
faced with the problem of what truly is democracy, how to exercise it and what are their rights.
Then came the 20+ new and different political parties all had their own demands - Congress
party, UML, Joint Govt, King Gyanendra’s rule, Maoist and most recently a joint govt comprised of 24 parties. People gave another opportunity to the King by giving him the benifit of
the doubt and celebrated with fireworks and lightning “diya” at the mandir. Only if the King had
recognized that by giving up his self interest, Nepalese people would have given him a second
chance. Nepal again went from prospering to centralizing of power and old political faces were
seen at stage. This led to joining of all parties with one voice dubbed as Jana Andolan II, Gyanendra was forced to leave the throne and with Jana Andolan II paved a way for national
constituent assembly election where the Maoist party won with a majority. Many people were
surprised by the Maoist victory when they won seats in the heart of the Kathmandu valley as
well as seats held by famous political leaders from different parties. Nepal again was seeing a
change by bringing the Maoist party to mainstream political party. Now with coming to power,
Nepalese people hoped that there would be a chance to bring peace, security and prosperity in
Nepal. This was a testament of the people giving a chance to new faces and new political
party. This time it did not last long, only to be marred by the disagreements with the Chief of
Nepal Army. He resigned and since then Nepal has been pulled down with centrifugal unforeseen forces that we are still witnessing today.
What happened to our country? A lot of people say “yo desh ma sati ko sraap lage ko cha”.
Nepal once stood as a peaceful nation, declared by many UN countries, and regarded as
“Switzerland of Asia” now finding itself at the bottom of every major economic, political, social
and justice issues. Corruption, blatant disregard for human rights, no law and order, pollution,
deforestation, bandh, murder, killings, extortions, forceful evacuations, the list goes on and on.
The people of Nepal who had never heard gun shots are carrying guns and pistols.
Give Back
We NRN enjoy a very settled, secured, comfortable, life. Most of us have worked very hard to
get where we are today. It was not given to us; we had to earn it. I personally see Nepal going
through a tumultuous phase for the last 20yrs. Nepal is crying aloud for help from its fellow
citizens to bring change and not to ignore their motherland. Do not forget we all grew up there
and we are Nepalese at heart. This time I really felt when I was leaving that now “I have a
mission to do something and save Nepal”. We the Non-Resident-Nepalese not only have the
responsibility to unite but to start the discussion on how to bring a change. Without us, Nepal is
sliding into darkness and the country is calling each and every one of us for help. I know, in my
heart, all of us love Nepal and given an opportunity will aspire to go back and live there. Let us
all think about our Country’s situation and devote part of our time in brain storming to provide
the Nepalese people with a government that is by the people and for the people. I would like to
end by quoting President John F Kennedy “Think what you can do for your country not what
the country can do for you”. Nepal has given a lot for us and now it is our turn to give back to
Nepal!
